On the VHT paint I used a couple months ago all coats had to be applied within an hour or after a full 7 days.

The last thing I do before painting small pieces Is wash it off with hot water. You may have had some paint thinner left on it.

My intake manifold gaskets arrived at the lawn care equipment center so I swung by and picked them up...

Also received my new clutch disc from K & B Horse Parts ( @76c12091520h )...

progress on the 1984 Work Horse GT-1600 8 SPEED anticipated...

I guess you would call this the input shaft on the transmission/ gearbox on the 1984 Work Horse GT-1600.

Is there a seal here, and if there is, can you replace it without taking the trans apart ?

apparently so, although I am not familiar with this particular tractor. There pretty much has to be a seal, and it has to be replaced from the outside. All you have to do is get the old one out. Key # 13 in the diagram. Part # 100442  Someone else may be able to tell you the inside and outside diameters.

On second thought, your shaft doesn't look too bad. If there is room in the boss, simply add another seal. If this is a bad idea, hopefully someone will say so. Personally, I have never done it.

Hello @Horse Newbie, looks like you have been doing some very nice work.  You should have the #5086 Wheel Horse transmission.  It has 1" axles and a 4 pinion differential.  That input gasket is about 1/8" thick, so be careful when you dig it out.  An awl or a very small punch can dig it out...just work it around.  They come out fairly easily.  The replacement is, like is shown above, #100442 which crosses to SKF #6105.  File any burrs on the end of the shaft and the key way and then tape with masking tape to avoid ripping the rubber in the seal when replacing.  Tap in working around in little bits with a punch and ball peen or a piece of 1" PVC.

   Any other questions, just ask.

And yes I do have more questions...

Can the other seals- axles, brake shaft, be replaced also without taking the transmission apart ?

I'm not gonna tell the members how I got that right side hub off !

Also, is there any kind of seal around the Hi-Lo selector shaft ?

No I haven't seen any casting  numbers.  The input seal is SKF 6105, the brake seal is SKF 7410, and the i" axle seais are SKF 9815.

You need to lightly file the key ways to remove any burs and tape with thin tape tp keep from cutting the seals when installing them..

And nope- nothing seals the hi/lo shifter. Always wondered why, but it is what it is.

 

All the seals can be replaced without splitting the case.
