Steveasaurus I don't know what bevel gear looks. I know you mentioned something about 4 holes, tried blowing up picture and posting.  Couldn't find mics to measure axle and when found corresponding numbers on other case, I'm thinking someone, just changed out trans.  So guess I'll either try to find case for this one or find right trans. I'd rather try to find right one, gentleman I found on an other site that's selling 3 speeds for 100.  Just don't know which one, and if had consider shipping, but driving 6 hrs isn't out of question either. So we shall see just a little bummed.    Thanks again though for everything I would have been on a crazy goose chase.

Okay, now really confused, my hubs are 5 hole and I see smaller axles are 4 hole.  Going to measure hubs in little while

Okay, axles measure 1 1/8

So think i am going to try and find a 5058 trans. 

Put it in save whatever parts can for kid and call it a day

Understand this...the case you have there was made for 1" axles.  Someone drilled out the case to accept the 1 1/8" axles and seals.  Check trans picture for reference in this manual...also has part numbers for transmission parts.

OK...so that case is junk.  Pull out all of the gears and clean all of it, pull out and open the differential and clean all of that.  I'm sure you have the bevel gear differential.  See if a casting number is on the big 44/11 toothed gear...the one that looks like a mushroom..should be  #4166.  I'll check out the rest of what may be in the transmission for parts.  Go ahead and start looking for either another transmission or the case halves #6940 & #6941.

Steveasaurus, just wanted to say thanks again, without all this info, is be a real quandery , but in your honest option what would you do, does it matter??? 

As in either 2 cases or whole trans or its whatever is available??

It depends yet.  I need you to pull out all of the gears, differential, shift rails and shift forks and clean the parts.  I need to know what is inside the differential.  If it is, then we need to see what gears they used...ie...the gears for the #5053 or the gears for the #5058.  I just looked a the  parts manuals for those 2 transmissions and the only parts that are common to both transmissions is the cluster gear, the cluster gear shaft, the reduction pinion gear and the reduction gear (the 2 gears on the cluster gear shaft).  That shaft is the smooth shaft...not the splined one.   Don't worry about taking it apart, I have step by step videos to put it back together.  So, if they used the #5058 gears, then you only need the case halves.  If they used the #5053 gears, you have a bucket full or parts that someone else on this site can use at some time...and you need to find a good working transmission.

   I think I would try to find a #5058 bevel gear transmission with everything in it.  I was wishing @953 nut might have a lead on finding one.  That transmission or versions of it was used on the 1963--953, 1964--1054, 1965--1054A, and the 1967--1057 & 1257.

   Option 3...find a #5060 or #5071 transmission.  These are the 10 pinion Limited Slip differential transmissions that have 1 1/8" axles and a hi/low range.

   Option 4...Find a regular 3 speed transmission with 1" axles...like the case you have in it.  Lots to think about.  I would look for  the right trans first...to keep the horse original.  :occasion-xmas: 

   Here is the transmission manual.  You want Section II for both the #5053 & #5058 trannys.

Steveasaurus,  SIR, you are awesome.  I think I'm going to go route of trying to find whole trans.  If they took time to swap cases, who knows what else they did.  I'll keep you posted how my search is going. Find wheel horse parts for sale on market place and reached out to gentleman in PA selling whole trans. See how goes from there.  Can't thank you enough for everything. Salute to you

And the rest of the guys on this site are pretty awesome. I can't even begin to tell you how much I've learned in the last 3 years or so.

 

Ask a question. You WILL get an answer. Doesn't even have to be about Wheelhorse tractors.....

 

Reading that last post by Steve and a couple others makes me imagine him in a dark dungeon workshop with like 14 manuals out over the counter. Researching. Researching. Researching.

 

At some point he's going to yell EUREKA so loud you'll hear him.

Thanks guys...I have not been involved in a transmission like this.  This trans has had so many things done to it, I just want to try to identify all the parts that got used in this trans and try to tell it's story.  Darren, let me know when you get it all apart, I might have you counting teeth on some of those gears.  Do not throw them out, they are worth money...that bevel gear differential could be worth $50 - $100.  Use that manual I sent you to take it apart.  I am glad I caught that cast number for you...you could have spent some major money for nothing.  Just keep me in the loop if you would...or call if you need to.  What do you think Eric...would have never thought we would run into some one that actually had a transmission that someone had drilled out the axle housings.  :occasion-xmas:

I've only had about a half a dozen of these things apart so far but I got to tell you. That's a new one.

 

I'm really really impressed that someone went to the time and effort to set those case halves up in whatever machinery it took and get those holes bored out.

I'll do whatever you guys ask, to best of my ability, I'm green with wheel horse for sure, but now I see why they have the following they do. 

Just makes me laugh, my dad bought a 1967 malibu chevelle 4 door hardtop brand new, he showed me a few things, but he passed when I was 18, learned a lot from gentleman like yourself, who full of knowledge, and biggest part willing to share.  I still have that car and taught my son more then my dad was able to do for me, and a lot goes to gentleman like you all. So maybe will all learn a little and be able to say hey remember that time, anything is possible!!!

Okay guys able to do a little today, got differential out, 44 tooth, sramped on one side is E22 and other is E25, can't find any other numbers.  One slip collar was broken in pteces in case.  Gear standing on end in pic also 44 tooth. Assemply in front came out of narrow side like is, (just as other assembly did), and gear in front of pic was on top of this assembly, and I think it should be on other side, cause was never engaged in a key, and key on bottom didn't engage anything. So that's where at.  Can't find phone number, cause didn't save, but if free call 203 610 7418. I'll be here for another half hour. Thanks guys

Thanks again gentleman, now just trying to figure out if guts are from a 5058 or 5053, couldn't match those numbers up with anything in the manuals, so I'm probably missing something.

Hello again gentleman, still working on project along with a dozen others. Lol

Finally split bull gear, pictures will follow. Steveasaurus, you were correct, are last conversation, what I thought was a slip/lock collar, is actually part of outside case.  So with everything wrong with what I have, I'm def looking for whole trans. I know I can get a least one half of correct case, but then I need 2 more pieces to make this correct.  So not on front burner as of now but definitely searching when can. Will update with my progress.  Thank you gentleman

Well hello gentleman, I know ita been awhile, but am making some progress, just got a nos 6941 case half in mail other day, so I'm HALF way there. I'll have to find the other side but progress is progress. I'll keep you all up to date as things happen

I cant believe I missed this thread.

 

I am swapping out a 5053 in my Commando 8, and putting in a 5060 with the limited slip. I am also in CT.

 

Shoot me a message if you'd be interested in the whole transmission I pull out. I will be keeping the brake-band and the hitches, but it would come with hubs (with studs), and a brake drum.

      Hey guys,I have a dilemma I need some help with. I have a 1969 GT 14 that I replaced the transmission and pump on. For about 2 weeks afterward everything worked great, but while mowing at a pretty good pace I noticed a shudder and the tractor slowed a little but not bad. The more I rode it the slower it got until it barely moves. What stumps me is the hydraulics are still very strong,as in I can back the 3 point under the bumper of my truck and if you lift the arms all the way up the front wheels of the tractor will clear the ground. Have checked the tow valve and checked the internal filter,but no luck. I have also checked and replaced the forward and reverse bypass springs and the lever is moving the cam to full travel, forward and reverse. Any help would be appreciated.

      I have developed a kit that allows a Wheel Horse / Toro hydrostatic tractor to be operated by a pedal on the right side of the tractor. The original forward/reverse lever can be retained or removed. The kit includes everything needed to install the pedal kit and installation is simple with the help of a downloadable installation manual. Additionally, only one (1) 1/4" hole will need to be drilled which can be done by a hand drill. No other drilling or cutting will be necessary. Any tractor with this kit can be converted back to stock without any visible evidence that kit was installed. However, you'll never want to do that

      The kit operates very simply and similar to modern tractors. When the pedal is pushed forwards the tractor will move forwards. When the reverse pedal is pressed downwards, the tractor will moved in reverse. If the operator takes his foot of the pedal at any time, the pedal will automatically center itself and the hydrostatic transmission will return to neutral (stop). This enables the operator to use both hands on the steering wheel or one hand on the wheel and the other operating an attachment like a snow blower, plow, etc.

      The foot pedal is custom cast in Aluminum, uses brass bushings to minimize wear, and it closely matches the OEM Wheel Horse BRAKE pedal commonly found on 8-speed manual transmission tractors. Modifications were done to the pedal to add the reverse pedal and adapt the pedal to the rest of the kit. For the most part, the pedal looks like it was designed and manufactured by Wheel Horse / Toro. Additionally, a grease fitting has been adapted to the pedal to further minimize wear and tear and if the brass bushings ever wear out they are fully replaceable without having to buy a whole new pedal. 

      The pedal kit fits the following series tractors with Eaton hydrostatic transmissions: C-1X5, 300, 400, 500. 
       
      My kit can be adapted to older hydrostatic tractors with the Sundstrand transmission, however, you will need to find an updated hydro cam commonly found on ebay. Message me for more information.

      New here! hello everyone! In a bit of a pickle here. My father owns a 1993 (I think that is the right year) 520H Wheel Horse. I don't commonly work on tractors but it seemed simple enough. the axle snapped on the left side, so it needed a new transmission. My dad bought a used transmission and I went to work changing everything out. The hydraulic pump that the engine's drive belt attaches to went to a different model/year of tractor, so I had to remove that part and swap it in from the old transmission. In the process I lost all of the oil in the pump (I mention this because I wonder if it has to do with my problem I'm having). When I reassembled everything I started the slow process of filling the transmission. I filled it up and started the engine. When moving the lever forward or backward, it had a tiny bit of power for a little bit and then lost power. The transmission wasn't doing anything, anymore. I though maybe that hydraulic pump needed to be primed, so we took the top hydraulic line off of the hydraulic pump right above the drive belt and used a transfer pump to pump some oil into the pump case. This still didn't work. I don't have enough experience with these hydrostatic transmissions to know if we got a bad transmission or if there is something obvious that I am missing when it comes to a transmission swap. I ask for any insight and help please. If you need pictures or any other info, then let me know what you need. Thank you!

      I have no understanding of what it is like to push one of these when the trans is disengaged and motion lever is in the forward position as the manual mentions. I hope this is not old ground and that I am not cross posting. With the trans disengaged and motion lever set forward there is still something spinning in and about the transaxle that is giving resistance. I need to know if this is normal or if I should be expecting more of a free wheeling experience. In effect, much less resistance. Thank you for comments or pointing me to a topic that already covers this.
