It's definitely separated on the right side... I agree it's odd as it should have blown at the narrow part... greatly appreciate both your input... i'm looking at the breaker right now...

Could it have been heating up at that connection because of corrosion causing an arc fault? Maybe clean those connections up?

She floats!!!

Thanks @Achto for the perfect solution!!!

And thanks to @wallfish and @953 nut for connection suggestions/observations... cleaned up and treated with @peter lena's second favorite - dielectric grease...

Needed a bit of trimming to fit on the plastic cover, but come to find out some one else has trimmed a bit before me... :eusa-think: But there were no cheese curd crumbs or Capt'n spills in the area so @WHX?? and achto are off the hook...!

All in all a good fix...

WHX??

I was going to suggest snow plow fuses that 'Fish posted but like Dan's suggestion better. It trips go looking for further issues and reset it. Fuses usually don't blow for no reason.

Glad you sorted it out, I missed all the fun, 😆. There are many ways to go on replacements, I like the breaker idea.

Update: Unfortunately, need to move this on... downsizing due to space and lower back issues...:(

Check out the classified section...

Yikes!!! :scared-eek:

Went to line up the herd for some Labor Day weekend pics and I turn the key on the A-60 :scared-shocked:and BOOM!!! And I mean BOOM!!! M-80 Firecracker loud!!!

No flames no smoke so I'm thinking what the???

Open up to find one of the three Deep Cell batteries split open and battery juice flowing out...!!!

Batteries from Costco 2 years ago...

Any ideas as to cause? Ran perfectly a week ago. No issues. Breaker wasn't tripped.

Input appreciated @953 nut @Pullstart @Achto @ebinmaine@WHX?? @Evguy @uglyblue66

Costco says

1) out of warranty

2) rare but when it happens it is heat related

3) Usually see battery expansion prior.

I knew warranty was void

Never heard of heat related battery explosions... and it's was 60 degrees out...

No expansion noted prior to event...

replacement battery $89...

I'd be bringing that DIRECTLY to your local Interstate Dealer.

I wouldn't expect them to warranty it.

I would expect them to better explain the situation.

Also, I'd want them to notify Corporate.

Wow. Only time I've seen such damage on a battery was due to deep freezing or massive repetative overcharging.

I'm glad it didn't damage anything else or cause an injury!

Not to make light of what could have caused injuries, but I’m thinking “Is the electric tractor equivalent of a Kohler throwing a rod?”

@SylvanLakeWH

I didn't mean to sound like I was implying anything wrong was done either. My previous post was just me remembering some faulty chargers and a bad transfer switch in a commercial application. We had several batteries burst like that.

Obviously, the cases aren’t optimized to contain high internal pressure, but I’m wondering how much there actually was. I’m assuming that that type of battery doesn’t have any means of venting.

Good point- Maintainence free batteries have little to no vents. Gone are the old days of adding water to the old flooded cell batteries.

@kpinnc @ebinmaine @Handy Don thanks for the input. I called interstate battery locally per Eb's advice and apparently it's not that uncommon for deep cells!!! :scared-eek: They are not maintenance free!!! My bad. They look maintenance free, but absolutely have cells that need distilled water... oops. :hide:

If low while charging, excessive heat, expansion... boom...

Distilled water on the way. New battery installed. Will report back.

I have learned a few things today...

The A-60 design completely encapsulates the batteries so no issues there thank goodness... I would have been in the Butts & Bruises thread... :happy-bouncyredfire:

Hydrogen is given off while charging, a little spark and BOOM.

When I replaced the battery on one of my :wh: I checked the electrolyte level as I always do and found two low cells. Pays to check.

I can’t add much, I have seen failures like that from charging however. I had a lithium cell pop on my converted car due to imbalance and excessive discharge.

Personally I think lead based batteries have declined in quality and lifespan, while becoming more expensive.

You should do a good baking soda and water washing on the surfaces that had battery acid on them. The mixture will neutralize the acid so that no long term corrosion will come into play.

WHX??

:text-yeahthat:Sylvia  ...  you've seen what that acid does. Had to make a mess.

Had to be hydrogen build up and then a internal spark. Were you charging them at the time? Batteries will generally out gas the most during charging. We always put the smoking lamp out when charging batteries on the sub. Funny the fill caps didn't blow off or did they? I bet that had to make a hell of a noise those casings are pretty tough. Was interstate worried about liability?

No not charging at the time. Just starting it to move it.

Caps didn't blow off.

Made a very large boom.

Interstate's reaction wasn't surprise. Said with deep cells it happens if cells don't have enough water. Not frequently, but the combination of heat and gas builds up... they said usually when charging.

Costco was more pissed that I brought the battery in the store to exchange than that it blew up. (I drained it). Set the cart aside and marked it with a placard.

Lesson learned.

squonk

Probably a plate shorted. Started discharging itself then a spark. Years ago I had an old Chevy Easter Egg truck. Was working at Napa so it was a 4 mile ride to work. Went home for lunch no issues. Went to leave at 5 and no start. Went to open the hood and I could smell the rotten eggs. Got the hood open and the battery was hot! I got lucky and got it out of there and into the woods before anything happened.

Another time a guy comes into the store squawking that the battery he bought a year ago had exploded. Gave me all kinds of grief. I asked him where's the battery and he says in back of his truck. I go out to look and the battery says "Everstart" I gave him all kinds of grief back as he got in the truck to go to Walmart! :helmet:
