Winter fun - Project “Freedom” 440cc 2 Stroke 1054 Snowmotractor

Recommended Posts

Pullstart

I have a collection of 953/1954/GT14 hubs growing it seems.  The hub center needs to be turned down, but eyeballing the holes tells me this might work very well!

If anyone needs me, I’ll be wheeling my spare parts into the heated section of the shop!

Hey @Pullstart  your project is off to a great start!  When it's finished, I know I will envy it as much as your other builds. I remember the fun I had building mine and now I get to share your enthusiasm building yours. Thanks for posting my youtube. I enjoyed seeing my long gone snow horse.

@giddyap Jon I hope I can do you proud!  If you’re up to it, and I get this thing finished before snow is gone, I’m only 4-1/2 hours each way.  You can come on up and take a stroll across the field!

I'm willing to accept this as an answer

EB's only 5 he has to have some one to watch over him. Looks like an even match.

How about a 399 or 440cc Kohler engine from a snowmobile?

you got one you’d like to donate to the cause?

There’s actually a pretty solid running Polaris 440 out there.  I thought about it.. but I feel like that may just be overkill.  I think it needs a pull cord and maybe a coil.  Maybe just the pull cord.

Sadly not any more.  If you would have asked me that a year ago I would have donated a 399 with electric start for the cause!  Overkill?  I didn't think that word was in your vocabulary?!  Think of it, double the HP and overdrive!  Don't let us down!

@ebinmaine mentioned @Oldskool might like this so here you go Mike I’ll tag ya.

Slight change of plans.

I picked this 1054 up from @davidtmercer a year or two ago.  I was thinking whole hog restoration but this seems like so much more fun.  @BOB ELLISONgave me a red white and blue seat that @953 nut gave him the vinyl for.  We might as well have some fun along the way!

Remember the horsepower rule - if some is good, more is better, and too much is just enough.

I’m going to consider power to weight ratio too.  Take off the lift mechanism, etc.. then likely ADD weight to keep it on the ground!

One hub turned, wheel adapter reamed, everything mounted and it clears!

That hot rod steering wheel in the third picture would look good on your build.  Any pictures of the hub adapter for it?

It’s quite hacked.  The hub is an aluminum slug, the wheel is screwed on with what look like a handful of self tappers, it’s bad.

We’re officially off the jack!  I’d like to replace the lug bolts with grade 8 standard bolts and washers, along with backer nuts behind the hubs.

Official width is 49-1/4”!
