K241

New to the forum.

I just bought my first wheel horse, it's a c125 8 speed with a 10 hp k241 so it's been repowered I take it.

My concern is when rototilling in first gear low I cant just let the clutch out and let the tractor do its thing I have to keep in and out of the clutch to let the motor catch back up.

Is the motor tired or is the tractor underpowered?

I have not cleaned the carb or done anything to the tractor yet for that matter. Just trying to get a feel for it.

A k241 is a tank of an engine with alot of power.  What's the overall condition might need a good tune up

Welcome!

I'm thinking a 10 horse should be able to handle that fairly well.

You are correct in that a C 125 where the 241 has been repowered.

There are a few things that come to mind.

What gear of the tractor? What RPM are you using? What type of soil?

It's certainly possible that the tractor is overdue for ALL of the fuel lines to be replaced and the carb to be cleaned out. Also possible that the governor is a little out of adjustment.

I have the same engine on my C 105. While I do not use it to till, I would think in 1 low it should be just fine...

As @ebinmaine suggests - go through and give it a thorough tune up / cleaning. In addition, are all the pulleys adjusted correctly so there is no slippage? Are all the tiller parts well lubricated and spinning as they should?

Edit - I just noticed you're from Michigan! Always good to see another Michigander!!!

I till with a C-121-8.  No power issues at all. and i have hard clay and rocks.  Poor tiller bounces like crazy but no engine issue.  What kind of soil do you have/  How deep are you trying to till on the first few passe?. Especially on previously untilled soil you have to work your way down in stages.

I'm running the tractor a WOT 1st gear low and I'm in clay/ sand. All pullys and tiller spin free. I know there is no slippage, I could watch to PTO slow down as the motor was. I will go through the carb and the fuel lines. Should I do a valve lash and adjust the points as well? And you guys will have to forgive me but I don't know the first thing about adjusting the governor?

Here are some manuals for the engine - should be of help.

http://www.kohlerengines.com/engines/onlinecatalog/pdf/tp_1346_c_all.pdf

http://resources.kohler.com/power/kohler/enginesUS/pdf/tp_2379.pdf

See starting on page 6-26 of the service manual for governor adjustment...

Valve lash probably is OK but cleaning, setting/replacing the points would be a good place to start. Cleaning the contacts on your points is a simple as running a slightly abrasive paper like a dollar bill through them if they are in good condition. The Kohler manual shows the steps in doing a static timing check. If you have a timing light that is the prefered method.

One other suggestion is to run non-ethanol gas, that E-10 junk will mess up your fuel system.

Well I think I found the culprit. This morning I went out to the barn and turned the flywheel by hand. I couldn't even tell on the rotation where the compression stoke was.

Might be worth your time to take the cylinder head off and resurface that. Decarbon the engine while you're in there.

The Kohler has ACR (automatic compression release?), unless the engine is spinning fast enough it will release the compression.  I understand that's to make life easier on the starter.

The ACH lifts the exhaust valve a slight bit off the seat momentarily just prior to TDC but you would feel compression as the piston went up. I agree with Eric @ebinmaine, pull the cylinder head off and see what you have going on. Could be a small chunk of carbon holding a valve open.

I've just acquired a renovated C125 but unfortunately the drive belt got snagged with the mower deck belt (maybe because of incorrect fitment?). It looks like I'm on a steep learning curve! I've been trying to find out which belt to buy as a replacement. The belt I've just taken off is 94 inches but  according to the parts manual I need a Toro belt part number 94 2501 which is 103 inches? The mower deck is a 42in rear eject. It's funny that the Toro belt has 94 2501 as the part number but is 103 inches & I apparently need a 94in belt? Any ideas?

Was looking to buy rear hitch assembly on eBay don’t know what is comparable with my ‘84 c125. They all look the same. Is there much of any difference through the models?

My starter really drags for a few revolutions (barely turns over) then it spins the Kohler K301 like a champ. I replaced the battery with a 390 CCA interstate.

I suspect the brushes are damaged from previously having an underpowered battery. Should I replace the brushes or replace the starter?  Also, what is a reputable place to buy these items?  I don't want to buy junk.

      Hi all,

I was finally able to take a week off and lost myself in catching-up on the '80 C-125. I've had the engine sitting rebuilt on the bench - repaired the Hi/Lo last year -  and was finally able to run her in last Tuesday after mounting. She only needed rings and a good valve lap. There is no end to the money that can be spent on a restoration or the amount of time in grinding, priming and painting with old Regal Red. At this rate, it will be summer before I'm done but it will have been worth the love. The 42" deck can use some minor welding but I had everything operational before I tore her down. Too much repair to list as this poor girl was buried in a southern backyard. Enjoy the pics - August last year after dragging it onto the trailer, this past Tuesday for break-in and just a few minutes ago. Back to work tomorrow so no more fun all day in the garage but should at least have the covers on when the Jacks belt and PTO brake order gets here later in the week.
