Genny light works backwards!

Recommended Posts

Just got a 1075. The Genny light glows brighter as you rev the engine up. Too hot for my tootsies today to hook up a meter and start checking. I'm assuming something is connected backwards. Any body ever see this?

I remember asking about this when I was looking at one of Trina's tractors during a rebuild. I'm sure you're well aware but that light has to be a very particular type of setup. Somebody probably installed an indicator or idiot light in there when it should be a generator lamp.

If you don't have it right handy I can get you a part number from one of the boxes I saved...

I don't remember that. Maybe it was someone else?

Sorry about that Mike. My phone auto corrected and added that "you"...

It was, I think, either Paul or Richard

Pretty sure you'll find that to be the factory indicator bulb on there Mike, I know I never messed with it.

Don't know why, light always worked that way from the day I got it.

Mike, the two wires on the S/G light are supposed to be insulated from ground and one-another in the socket. Like many other things on our tractors the ravages of time can take their toll on the socket.

Easy for these wires to come into contact with each-other. If they touch or the insulation between the two parts in the socket breaks down the light will be on anytime the key is on and the socket has no ventilation. The lamp # should be 57.

I would suggest you buy a Cole-Hersee PL 20RC000 and replace the old one. It is a direct replacement item.749225737_Screenshot(31).png.56c53b3135dc2a4808826519434e49e8.png

Thanks Richard. I was reading about alternator idiot lights and voltage balance. Got some good ideas. I'll be sitting on my stool with my big honkin fan going.

WHX??

Thank you Richard I have been trying to save ones like your first pic. Maybe not worth the effort now that I know new ones are available.

Found 2 culprits right off the bat. (No pun intended) :helmet:

Ground lug is shot. and also notice the white wire at the center lug of the regulator is going to ground instead of battery positive. Going to investigate things more before moving it.

Pretty sure that's how he got it. This tractor had electrical issues Joseph Lucas would have been proud off when he acquired it.

Wonder if the ground lug was damaged when the coil fried?

Remember, that ignition switch was burnt out then too.

Can't climb ladders and can't kneel on my left knee but I can raise the tractor in the air and sit on a chair. Gotta keep the brain working. People say it's the first thing to go. I wear myself out so much I fall asleep at physical therapy! :)

I got that printed out. I'm going to check every wire landing location before I move the center regulator wire. Had to drive to Syracuse to get the hood shot with a spectrophotometer yesterday so no more electrical progress. Did get a pint of paint. We'll see how it looks

It looked like someone forced the 1/2" bolt through the lug and broke it. On my way to Syracuse I stopped at my local electrical repair shop and had them make me a new ground cable.
