It can be done!  I have always loved the sound of a big Briggs opposed twin!

We use these on mowers. 190 cranking amps. You can get them a larger.

That is a dampening valve, takes up pressure from acceleration valve to reverse valve,  manual stats clean with solvent, check for damage to the  pin or ball or if valve rattles when shaken, replace valve.

Gt14rider do you think that will solve my problem,  the transmission will take off in forward and almost pull the front end off the ground and barely move in reverse?.  I’m in the process of changing out all the o-ring in the reverse circuit and polishing the valve seats,  in the hopes that I have an internal leak

I think they sound awesome and they seem to have a lot of power and are smooth

Is that a similar engine to what would have been in a Bolens st160?

That was a Briggs and Stratton twin.

Sounded great.

I think you are on the right track,  check springs and orings, forward and reverse valves, also check valves and springs item 9 and 10. Trouble shooting chart, Erratic engagement...... follow flow chart, check towing valve / hydrogear tune - up. Sundstrand manual,

Also check speed control lever for full travel and tention, make sure cam plate moves all the way, so you get full forward and full reverse range

They are grossly underrated and get a bad rep for many being put into cheaper mowers and poorly maintained.  My parents had one in a Yardman GT and it was a very smooth running engine that had power all day long.

Nla, if you find some let us know, looks like most common problem, try to flush as best you can, pieces of spring will wreck pump.

Several years back @refracman had a source for the acceleration springs, send him a PM and see if he can help.

I flushed out the passages with some brake clean ran a magnet in all the bores and was getting some fine metal.  Drained the fluid and installed a new filter,  I hope I got all of it

Have you tried LJ Fluid Power for the springs?

I swear this little tractor doesn’t want to go to the show, so I was trouble shooting the very slow in reverse motion and jerk your head off your shoulder and pull the front end off the ground.  I noticed that when in reverse there was a trail of fluid, so here is the problem

Lucky me I have 4 hydro units from several Gt14,  I took one apart and inside was completely trashed but the housing for the drive gear is in good shape,  I now have two cuted hydros now to make a Frankenstein hydro hoping for the best

Ok guys here it is twin Briggs on a 875, has anyone tried this yet need a little help,  looking for options on an air filter, and trying to cut as little as possible out of the hood here is what I got so far,  I’m going to get a 1/4inch piece of flat steel to mount the engine on so I can move it around on the frame

So cool!  Once you get the 1/4” plate under the engine, try cutting various blocks of wood at a certain thickness to sit on the carb and see if the hood clears.  In die making we used modeling clay to run a die over in the press to see where the stop blocks needed to be.  Maybe you could build a carb hat to relocate the filter like the GT-14?
