@ebinmaine gotta lean on you again. 2 things, 1 does that look like the original fill tube for the trans? Dipstick missing. Gotta find one. Others fit? 2, oil fill tube is super sloppy, (loose) any easy fixes? I tried one out of a 10hp block i have here and it was a little tighter but still loose. Not to mention dipstick way too long.

Not sure on the trans tube as we have no hydros here.

Is there a seal missing on the engine tube?

Herder

Fired up the 1976 C-160 and pulled her into the shop for a hydro service and quick wipe down.  She still had the snow thrower attached.  It was nice to put that away.  This is the WH that it all started with about 15 years ago.

Story time. Fueled the 1056 after running it for five minutes. I Ran  it about 15 feet when I noticed flames through the hood latch. I Shut it down as fast i could, flipped opened the hood, and booked it to water. I put it out and rolled her back to shed. Didnt really  look at it but i did notice the foam oring around the cap was all crusty. Pulled it out and it dissolved in my hand. So I figured the gas got out some how and lit. Not sure where the ignition source was though. Any ideas? @PeacemakerJack @gwest_ca @Sparky @953 nut @stevasaurus @ebinmaine

Was thinking that but the fire was on top if the tank. After work (and getting a fire extinguisher) might run it again. This time with no hood. Just happy i didnt lose the whole tractor.

All of the wiring directly behind the fuel tank is a likely suspect because none of it is fused. Old brittle insulation, gas tank leaking (or vapors from cap vent) and bouncing around has taken the life of many a :wh:.          :sad-pacing:

I agree with ya but my wallet Dont.  I suspect that you suggest that i fuse most hot circuits. And say if i was holding the a wrench and tightening the positive bolt on the battery, when it touches  the tractor frame it shouldn’t spark?

This may seemed far fetched but is that possible?

I am happy my 1056 didn't go up like a candle. Especially since it had a full tank of fuel and was hauling five gallons of fuel when it went up.

Not a huge investment if you have some basic wiring skills and components.

Can you take a few pics of the area and show any damages or black spots?

I might have to think about re-wiring, and tubing my wires up to the dash.

Any idea what the charge indicator bulb for an 855 would have been? Mine is MIA.

I'm glad you didn't lose the tractor! Does that tractor have a start solenoid or does it still have the heavy switch that sends power directly to the starter?? I'm wondering if the switch arced or maybe a slightly loose connection arced setting off fuel that possibly spilled or splashed on the tank since you just put gas in it??

Cole Hersee PL-20-RC.

It HAS to be that exact number/letter combo.

There are variances of this part number.

That's way more part than I need. That has the socket and lens too, I just need to light bulb, my socket and lens are perfectly intact.

I'm thinking it is a 98LL. That's what the Mustang uses for dash lighting, and it has the same style socket.

Some pictures might help us, but I tend to think Richard nailed it.  Spark and fumes seem logical.  :confusion-confused:

Is there a seal missing on the engine tube?

Its just the metal tube in a tube holder. Looks like the lower piece is bolted to the block. No seal, metal slid in metal. O ring seal missing? Parts diagram not much help.

That would be a # 57 bulb.                           Image result for # 57 bulb

I learned years ago to put a 4x4 across the front of the truck to help keep the tractor from doing just that
