Brinly Plow - help

Recommended Posts

David414

I don't have any prior knowledge or experience with this plow as I will be a first-time user. Need some help please.

I brought this well used plow, which I believe is a Brinly PP-500 series as the exploded part view seems to match up with my plow.

Completely disassembled the plow, removed all rust, primed, painted, (wheel horse red of course) and re-assembled with new fasteners.

Having trouble with the coulter blade, as it doesn't seem to fit this plow? Please refer to the pictures below.

It appears to mount only one way, but it seems too big for this plow.  Do I have the right size coulter blade?

What am I am doing wrong? Also is the front yoke assembly mounted correctly?

Thanks

You should be OK. The land slide should sit in the bottom of the ploughed furrow. To get it there you need to turn the adjusting screw which will raise the hitch mount. This is adjusting what is called the suck. It should plow at the desired depth with no down or up force from the tractor lift. The mould board pulls the plough into the soil until the landslide hits the bottom of the furrow and it also helps the plough to run straight.

Once adjusted I am sure your coulter will clear the plow.

The front mount looks correct. It is welded at a angle to keep the plough flat in the furrow with the right tractor wheels down in the previous furrow.

Here's the manual I have saved for my Brinly plows. It will describe how to adjust yours. Good luck!!! Plowing is FUN!!! (when it's adjusted correctly!!)

Looks like you have the tip sucked in too far. Mount the plow on the tractor. With the plow down the land slide should be about 1" off the ground. This is a good starting point.

The manual that @Razorback posted will help you with your set up/

Another tip: See your first pic of the non-restored plow. See the adjustment screw? Compare the exposed threads with the restored-plow pics. That will get you in the ballpark.

c-series don

Also turn that hairpin cotter pin around or the dirt will push it out, or use a standard cotter pin. Your plow looks awesome by the way 👍🏻 Almost too nice to get dirty, but hey they meant to get dirty!!

One other tip for you. Run the two nuts towards the front of the plow & lock them together. Make sure that you can spin the handle freely. This allows you to adjust the plow without tools.

You may ask "Won't it get out of adjustment while plowing ?'" Answer is "No",  look at how worn down the share is on the upper plow in the pic below. I have never had it move on me in all the time that I have used this plow.

I bought a 5xi package yesterday including some attachments I'm not going to need:
4' plow, model # 79355 - in great condition, very minor surface rust on crossmember and back side of blade. $250 48" mower deck with blower and bagger - in good condition, working when removed from tractor yesterday. Previous owner said it never clogged on him. Some surface rust on deck and one 2" hole near the center. $300.
I'm open to offers and interested in trades! I'm looking for a 2-stage snow thrower, p/n 79366. Maybe tools, etc.

Available for pickup--let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

Here's a photo of the deck that's included. It's got some rust holes, but functions perfectly. Most of the price here is wrapped up in the blower & bagger:

SOLD SOLD 520xi with air cooled 20hp Kohler - tractor in great shape and solid. Everything works. Engine was removed a few years ago and cleaned of grass buildup. New head gaskets and PTO seal a few years ago. Engine showed a decent amount of wear but runs strong and fires right up. Didn’t like the wear and needed a zero turn for my property. Would not hesitate to mow with it right now. 1200 hours. Have original paperwork. New air filter, fuel filter, fresh oil & filter. It’s been mowing 3+ acres for 20 years.

52” side discharge deck complete. Currently mounted on the 520xi- solid, welded/patched cracks and holes. Front roller broken and patched, newer belt. Was just removed and cleaned. Welded chips in blades, but never finished sharpening. Solid deck, decent life left.

48” wheel horse complete plow for 520xi 79355. Was used for snow. In great shape.

48” wheel horse plow incomplete for 300 series garden tractor. Was used for parts. Not sure what it is missing but what’s there is very solid.

MUST TAKE ALL. WILL NOT SEPERATE. Won’t answer if you ask. $750 CASH for everything. Only thing I’d consider selling separate is the 48” incomplete plow for 300 series. Will not deliver.

Just wanted to show a modification I did to my 1990 310-8. I recently picked up a 36” tiller for my horse and I tried it out on my new garden area. After hitting a rock, it knocked one of the axle brackets open dropping the right side of the tiller. On a manual I viewed, it had clevis pins to hold the lever in, but my bracket did not have them. I drilled a 1/4” hole through on each lever and mounted a 1/4” clevis pin and hairpin cotter to reinforce the lever. I read on another post to just tighten the bolts on the levers, but I think this will work a little better. Hope this helps someone!
