AA has a 12 step process for freeing yourself from addiction, If you have come here seeking help to free yourself from being a Hors-A-Holic you have come to the wrong place.   We are just a group of enablers that will drag you further into the depths of your addiction.           :woohoo:

Hmm...I didn't have the addiction until I got here so I'm somewhat conflicted as to what to do :o

That's what scares me, I have a half empty 30' x 40' foot barn and a 40' x 50' shop that still has a little room in it   :confusion-helpsos:

Hmmm. Some of us would do a lot get room for even one or two more tractors or even a warm place to work over the winter. Enjoy!

I totally understand.  I worked many years in a cold garage.  Nothing like warmth in the winter, especially as a person gets older!

I needed to remove the fan shroud so I could blow out the mouse nest.  As luck would have it one of the bolts snapped off.  This was the bolt on the lower left corner when looking at the shroud.  I didn't want to leave it like that but I also didn't want to remove the flywheel so I figured I might as well at least try and drill it out and re-tap the hole.  I have a 12" long set of drill bits in 1/16" increments so I decided to give it a try.  I started with the 1/16" and succeeded in getting it centered and drilled all the way through the bolt remnants.  Next was the 1/8" and then the 3/16".  I don't have a long #7 drill bit so I had to settle for trying to use the 1/4-10 tap in an undersized hole and see what would happen.  My biggest fear was breaking the tap off.  I didn't have a long enough tap handle so I had to settle for a small wrench to turn the tap.  Beyond all expectations I managed to succeed with the tap.  I hope to never have to try that again :)

The tip of the tap sticking through the hole is shown circled in red in the last picture.

Your patience and care paid off. Nice job.

Mine came to me with this hole stripped so now I have one shroud bolt that is larger than all the rest. 😄

Better an oversize bolt than no bolt.

I was afraid there wouldn’t be enough metal left after bringing the hole to the right size and then tapping it, but so far so good.

That's a valid concern, especially in a aluminum.

Your concerns are definitely noted.  Fortunately these wheel horse tractors aren't my first foray into rebuilding and/or restoring something.  Over the last 50 years I've restored several Triumph sports cars, a 51 Dodge pickup, an old 1944 Ford Jeep, Excello mill and a South Bend lathe plus other odds and ends.  I've sort of developed a process where every project has it's own spreadsheet that I keep track of costs, tasks, etc. This method works for me.

Brad

That’s fine, Brad. Just didn’t know what your skill set was. Sounds like you’re on the right path. These are very addicting. The only complaint I have there getting too expensive when you’re retired. I just hope you enjoy the project and the ride when it’s done. I share the same passion as everybody else here by commenting the labor of love. Not trying to get corny on you.
