I went sunday and picked up the 314H I'd found. It's in good original condition besides the tires, and a few seat cover cracks, looks like it'd been kept out of the weather til I brought it home in the rain, cranks and runs like new. 48" deck is solid top and bottom, the spindles are not corroded and spin freely. I'll go over it service the fluids, filters etc, clean the deck, inspect the bearings, belts etc. I'd been wanting a hydro drive WH for some time, I'm glad to have found it.

Semi - Worker. Can't stand to just look at it in the garage. It was built to do something.

Olmsted Tractor The Olmstead Gas Traction Company was founded by Charles Olmstead in 1912 in Big Timber, MT and would later move to Great Falls, MT. The Olmstead Gas Traction Company built only one model tractor, the 25-30, called the Olmstead Four Wheel Pull, it was also the only tractor known to have been built in Montana. It is believed that less than 100 of these machines were built. Very little is known about Mr. Olmstead or his company. The Olmstead tractor was one of the earliest attempts at an all-wheel powered tractor, it was built with an articulated frame caring the engine on the rear half and the fuel tank and tool boxes on the front half. The operator stood at the rear of the tractor manipulating the thirty-foot-long chain drive tractor without power steering. According to an article in Motor Age, in 1914, “the Olmstead Gas Traction Company of Great Falls, Mt. purchased the plant of the Curtis Truck and Forging Co. of Decatur, IL to manufacture four-wheel-pull gasoline tractors for road and farm work of all kinds. Due to the heavy freight charges from Montana to the middle states, the company felt the necessity for an eastern plant and decided to locate in Decatur, IL.’ The engine of the Olmstead Four Wheel Pull is a four-cycle Clifton engine rated at 28 HP. The engine is equipped with priming cups and compression release ***** to ease cranking. It is a water-cooled L head and the design and construction provide ample space for water with an abundant circulation, ensuring cool cylinders when the motor is working its limit of power and speed as well as when running a light load. The engine is assured of longer life than in most tractors because the machine is spring mounted and the springs take up all jars, keeping the engine protected when ruts or obstacles are encountered while at work. Apparently, the plan to relocate to Decatur never materialized as nothing further can be found.

Picked up this tractor this morning. Hood says C121. Model/serial numbers on side of dash say it is a 1969 Electro12. Hydraulic lift and a real nice seat.

Awhile back I acquired a “ Frankenstiened ” 1277. So it didn’t bother me much to change it a little. Finished it yesterday except for adding headlights.

The 520-8 and the 520-H that is almost just about done being cleaned up both out in the sun together for the first time. The sound of the two Onan's running away is amazing.

After months of restoring, we finally wrapped up this project, years ago a friend bought this 502 with hopes of restoring it one day, late last fall we finally dug it out of the weeds and started its journey. We opted to turn this into a 702 for a few different reasons, ease finding a somewhat original engine being the biggest. I'm not sure what the rear came from, it is a little newer because the brake band mount is orientated differently, I'm guessing 953/1054 because of the long axles but I'm not positive. The hood was by far the worst of it, believe it or not there's 2 hoods welded together along with a few hand made pieces and easily 30 hrs in it including paint. All that's left is to apply the 2 hood decals and the new knurled knobs for the hood. I'm very pleased with the way it came out. These little tractors are a lot of fun and my buddy got a first hand experience in the time and amount of money it takes to fully restore one. All I can say is they're a labor of love.

Keep them on a tractor, 4 or 5 should be enough.

Thinking about putting a plow behind this one. Four new tires, painted the wheels, thumpin' 16HP Kohler, all new hydraulic hoses, rebuilt cylinder and control valve, front weight set. Also have a full set of wheel weights I need to mount. Must be an older tractor, no rubber hood latches, older style control valve. Still have some more to do, but liking it so far!!

That would be a "Colossal" miscalculation...

I pulled the deck off of this RER 108-5. I need to replace the deck drive belt on it. Plan is to push it over on its side to make it easier to get to. Might bring the deck over to a friend's place to get it patched up. Funny looking with the deck on it but even funnier looking with it off.

I’m going this route, purpose built machines. I’m not good with low work so I don’t like changing them, like others I use dollies and profanity.

Dollies. Cheap fold up engine cranes. Old swing set with a chain hoist Ect.

So I emptied out the tool box. Found a few goodies in it. I took everything out, vacuumed up the drawers, pulled them out and greased them up. Wiped it down pretty good. A girl I work with is starting to make her own jewelry. She's pretty good too. She plans on making and selling earrings, bracelets, necklaces. I don't have a use for this box so I'm going to put new felt in it and give it to her to hold all her materials and tools for her jewelry stuff. Can't believe how heavy this thing is empty. I thought about painting it but i think just new felt lining will be good enough.

Well, after another lengthy absence I am back at it again! I did end up sending almost all of the parts to the powder coating guy, should have them back this week. The Hydro Trans was split apart, and it looks great inside, I'll put a new gasket on and get it painted sometime this week too, so hopefully in a week or so I'll have a rolling chassis.

My pear trees are my best producers. I have a Moonglow and a Red Bartlett both self pollinating and I get 4-5 dozen pears off each tree. The plums (Stanley Prune and Santa Rosa) also do well. The apples have not done so well due to the late frosts and lack of bees for pollinating. The blossoms do look good this year. Hopefully the winds will help to pollinate. Honey Crisp and Cortland( supposedly ) a good pollinator look good. Gala and Mcintosh both produced some small apples last year.

New battery installed. Got this tractor and the 520-8 clone I built both out in the sun together for the first time. I then drove around the yard for a while. Tractor runs and drives amazing.

Well done….I’ve always thought the 314-H was the perfect mix of simple yet very capable. That one looks like it will be an easy clean up and should be an excellent tractor. How many hours on it?

Small breadboards. I’m sure they would work great as a paddle, whether for a boat or a butt. I just did them to try out the designs after I cleaned them up. It’s hard matching the texts but I finally got it.

Are they very small boat paddles? I'm sure my yoga teacher would have one, she's always going on about my tushie being too high or too low or some such.

Some of the 520lxi early units had cam gear issues because they were plastic and later changed to metal. I have had both a like both. I currently have a 520lxi and it has some smoke on start but runs so smooth. You really cannot go wrong with either. Only other advantage is 520lxi is liquid cooled so you can tap into the hot water if you are looking to add heat in a cab for wi tee use…

I have been absent from the forum for awhile as life has been busy. To help with this I am trying to get my 520H ready to help me get some of my tasks done quicker (mowing, etc) but here is my problem. I am basically a 1 man team and moving and attaching things like a large snow blower is not fun and the 60" deck is nearly impossible. I need help. How does everyone else move these large attachments around? Based on what I have read, I think that if I can get the 60" deck out into the open then I hope I can roll over it (I think i may create some small wood ramps to make it easier) but I am dreading just getting the deck out into the open. Also I have my 48" snow blower attachment currently blocking my tractor in front (I think I was getting ready to install it but never did and I don't remember how I even got it in front in the first place). So I need recommendations how to move these 2 heavy items by myself without forklift or loader. I tried to use hand truck but could not find an optimal way to position the weight. I apologize if this has been discussed before (I did look but couldn't find anything).

Glad to see that she doesn’t get mad at the rocks--she gets even by putting them where she wants them!

Thank you all for the quick replies. I will try out as many of these as I need to (especially the profanity) to get the 60" deck on and it is likely it will stay on there forever. I will keep an eye out for new WH for the snow blower. I will try to follow up here to let you know how I make out and what method worked for me.

Mote BBT work out behind the house today. We've been getting a lot of water under the deck surface there by the back door. Likely a fair amount is runoff from melting snow. She cut back the garden a couple feet to give more area for fluid movement. It used to be right at the deck. She also lined the newest area with these little boulders.

I don't have a 60"er, but I find a wrecking bar helps me to install and remove my 42s and 48s. I find using the hooked end to pull the decks is much easier than pushing. Then use the straight end to align the lift lever and the attach o matic.

suggest when you are servicing it you look underneath and check the tranny frame plate that has 4 bolts attaching main frame to transmission -- be sure it doesn't have a stress crack fracture?
  43. 2 points
@OoPEZoO That's a very nice find @John c. Agree a 314H is a great machine. Magnum reliability, Eaton 1100 transmissions are the best. You got high end power without all the electrical issues of a 500 series. That tractor should handle everything you throw at it. Very nice save!

I have wanted to make this post for the past ten months; today I drove a Wheel Horse for the first time since my stroke! My wife was a bit apprehensive about the whole thing and I wasn't even sure I could get on the 310-8; but I did and it felt SOOOOOO GOOOOOOD

Here ya go Jay. I may have to try the blower next year. That may be a new way to apply a coating to the auger. http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=youtube+100+pumpkins%ee%80%81+vs+%ee%80%80a+snowblower&view=detail&mid=A3973FA9394A79A2BF05A3973FA9394A79A2BF05&FORM=VIRE2
