FYI A surprise finding of New Old Stock 32 inch 5-7321 Mower Decks (maybe 5) used on 1957, 1958, 1959 (RJ's, 1960 Suburbans and 1961 - 701's has been located, Not sure what the value of these might be and was surprised to see them in original boxes with all the original parts including drive belt, deck wheels and belt guard for the deck on the tractor. I never knew that the mower decks were painted all red underneath when coming from the factory. The 5-7321 Manual say these were made in 1969 by Wheel Horse but that they wer for the early (1957 to 1961) garden tractors. So the dealers must have had requests for replacement decks at that time in 1969.

I picked up the March issue of Diesel Power magazine, and found this! It’s only taken 10 months since I submitted and about a month ago I gave up hope. This was taken long before it hauled 4 tractors or trekked to PA.

About 5:30 last night my father in law called, my jokingly nature was quickly distinguished when I learned that my mother in law had been hit by a truck checking the mail. I made the 6 or 7 mile trek to their house in about 4 minutes, to find her in the ambulance and police taking statements. A vehicle was stopped in the road to turn left into a private drive directly across from their driveway so she proceeded to open the mailbox. A too fast to stop truck decided it safe to pass the Tahoe on the right, clipping her. I was so relieved to see her in that van moving her legs and able to focus and speak. Those are things we brag about when babies start growing. We shouldn’t have to be excited when the rest of our family is able to perform those functions because someone wasn’t paying attention, or driving too fast. She’s got 6 broken ribs and a punctured right lung with some air in her chest cavity, but expecting 6-8 weeks of intense pain and a full recovery. Call your parents, or kids or siblings. Remind them that you love ‘em. I’m glad to still have that ability today.

Finally found the time to get back to the 857. New key switch in, fuel shut off valve in, engine tins and belt cover installed. Added a little gas and BOOM!! she's running like new. Next project is an exhaust and replace the spec plate. My colors are a bit different but I like the way it looks. I changed the decal on the front of the hood to the chrome. I just like the looks of the chrome better. Not sure what I am going to do for the hood decals but it will not be traditional.

I have always considered it a major accomplishment to post an answer accompanied with (correct) manuals before Garry! He is a treasure for sure, but I think it is a bit morbid to talk about having a contingency plan for replacing him. We nearly lost Karl, @nylyon, a few years ago because of an accident, thank God he was not more seriously injured. I don't know what would have become of the site, but I am not too sure we need to develop a planned succession of leadership. We have been blessed with some outstanding members and moderators and I can only hope and pray it will continue to be so.

My name up in lights.... just the way my wife would do it too. Thanx EVERYONE... all you WHEELHORSE GUYS... very much appreciated.

First idea. Think I will make a set tonight to try out. Of course the image does not show the chrome. Just have to imagine until I get them done and post a picture.
  10. 4 points
You do owe it to them to submit a newer picture showing how capable it is of hauling a load.

Thank you all for the kind thoughts. She is stable, with good pain meds and working on keeping healthy lungs. We’re hoping she will be able to go home soon, but will have to prove she can get around on her own first.

First let me ask everyone's indulgence about this topic. I am not announcing nor expecting anything to happen to anyone, far from that.Nor am I diminishing anyone else's importance or effectiveness. However it is good practice to have a contingency plan for something which is vital and important to anyone or any organization. I don't have to tell anyone how important this site is to all of us who care about these tractors. Specially appreciative are undoubtedly many of the new members we have, and those are what alerted me to this matter. Specifically were those that join and it is evident that their main reason is that at the time they have a problem with a Wheel horse. Although many jump in immediately with help, it is our beloved file moderator that stands out all the time. He is always lightning quick and precise. His ability to always be there at the right time , the beautifully organized manual section which has really become an encyclopedia , and his ability to immediately see something that needs to be placed in that section is nothing short of amazing.Hence my question, whether there is a contingency plan for the possibility that he may not be able to always do it. It is a crucial part of this forum, and although it will undoubtedly continue to exist, i feel that without the kind of attention it gets now it could quickly suffer from it. Again not diminishing anyone else's capabilities but those shoes may not be easy to fill.

Garry is irreplaceable, me on the other hand, I do have my will in place, Mike has the second set of keys, except of course he’s planning on getting hit by a bus, and me a truck...
  16. 3 points
I think what 953nut is saying is how's your will looking Karl? With the site owner, his hand picked mods (aside from the the Dino ) and all the guys & gals we have here tis truly a marriage made in heaven. If it wasn't for Garry and his file notes my 1067 would be a throwaway kitchen gadget by now not to mention all the other tractors and attachments in my harem. When one digs into the files section and sees all the notes in there one has to guess that the files mod is to be given credit for most of it. As an employer I like to think most of my employees are replaceable should they quit or sucumb to the dreaded bus. Not so much with the fine folks here. BTW Mike @Sparky we might throw you under the bus...... Garry I would jump in front of it to save him!

Good point... As with any organization - you don't really know or appreciate what you have until it's gone... This place, the Mods and Admins are one of a kind... Perhaps your post will nudge someone here to reach out and offer to "apprentice" the files mod position... Meanwhile - Thank You Mods and Admins... Your efforts are deeply appreciated.

I absolutely agree - but who else in this world has these Ninja skills on reference materials/parts numbers and sources like his??? Not to mention, that psychic ability to appear out of nowhere in about 5 seconds, no matter the time of day/holiday or any other factor? The only way I can see a replacement is one trained by the Guru himself - and that would take a long and studious apprenticeship. We've already lost one of the best electrical wizards ever seen - wish we could get some insight into this loss as he is truly missed. Sarge

Ignition switch. Napa usually carries this in stock. Click on the pictures. Clutch pedal switches rarely fail in my experience The other switch in the starter circuit is the pto switch and I think this is the one you have. If not let us know. Garry

What is the serial number of this 79366? I'm sure in the 10 year run there were changes made to the unit and the serial number will date it so you can get the proper ipl. Here is a list of all of them https://www.partstree.com/parts/search/models/?searchTerm=79366 Here is what we have on it and there is one 8-page service bulletin https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/search/?&q=79366&type=downloads_file&search_and_or=or Garry

Very very true. No there is not a contingency plan for File Mod or any other position here at RS. I'm pretty sure if I get whacked by a bus while crossing a busy street that you guys wont notice a thing

Perhaps a little off topic but you mentioned not liking pines or its products, so I have to go to their defense. Keep in mind that there are numerous uses for pine sap, many of which are all but forgotten nowadays but were essential a couple of generations ago. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a place where those uses were still appreciated and make use of some myself still today. Pine needles and cones are great to start a fire if you don't have paper around. Needles also make great mulch for weed prevention. Notice nothing else grows under a pine tree? Pine wood itself makes great kindling too. People in my area here spend money on "fat sticks" to start a fire in their fireplaces, fire starting tablets and all kinds of nonsense. Meanwhile many have large pine trees in their yards with needles, cones, and all kinds of small branches always falling. Due to my profession, people have asked me that if I was only to be able to use one single species of wood for the rest of my life which one would it be.My answer is always pine. Commonly misunderstood and not entirely easy to work with believe it or not, it is the most satisfying wood to work with and I have worked with a lot of them from Macassar Ebony to Mansonia just to mention a few unusual ones.

He was one cool dude who is truly missed Marv ...by me anyway... coming from a guy who cut his teeth on vacuum tubes Old Iron forgot more than I'll ever know. Lots of his good stuff still resides here. Comforting to know Karl as long as Sparkeye don't go green & yellow on us!

Okay. Well I appreciate the advice very much. If it was an 8 speed I would probably try to strike a deal. I personally like the 8 speeds. Thank you sir. Jerry

@953 nut.... Richard, I think it was you that had a neat little plaque that said something about the right price being the one that makes the buyer and the seller both happy. Jerry, as with pretty much anything else the price is driven very much by supply and demand. Up here in Maine that tractor would be worth a little bit more right after a snowstorm.... but I'm not sure I would give quite that much for it unless I had some kind of great proof that the engine had been rebuilt and the hydro transmission was in amazing condition AND all of the implements were in proper working order and not at all worn.

1:30 to 2:15 PM. Snowblow slush, ice off driveway, and snowblow snow that slid off some roofs. Town plow has not been by yet. 1/2 gallon gas, 80 degrees in cab. Raining now.

retired wrencher , your response to thejum57 of just living up the street , is probably the most helpful one, being a horse owner with experience on it , you can easily do a walk around and show him what's got to be done. just my opinion , pete

Kind of looks like the belt broke and doubled over in the drive pulley. Figure if all the other stuff the guys pointed out is good, and it turns easy, that is probably what happened. I am not to familiar with XI models but is there clutch that slips or does it rely on the belt? Wondering what happens if you hit a pile of frozen snow.

Check the auger gearbox for oil, if it was leaking which most do, then you most likely ran it out oil and hence maybe locked up the impeller to auger which is driven by the PTO pulleys, how about a picture of the auger gearbox and impeller, also those thin bronze bushings on the end of the auger are to say the least a joke...many threads on here of the 2stage redone for the classics same basic unit except for how the PTO drives it.

Progress has been slow but will speed up after Christmas. Ordered a new key switch from a-ztractor.com today. I was able to get to the shop today And check out the engine parts that Gary got Powder coated. Definitely non traditional. The pulley was the last to get done. It is a bit darker than the hood. No idea what paint the PO used for the hood. After seeing it I'm thinking we should have used that powder on everything but I kind of like the 3 colors together also. Will remove the engine next winter and redo it all red if it starts bothering me. I'll see how I like it once we reassemble everything.

Got the refurbished dash in and the air cleaner & reg cover powder coated chrome. Will be powder coating the engine tin red and the starter belt cover is going chrome. If I'm not happy with look I will redo it next winter.

I finally got the templates adjusted and have stayed up past my bed time putting this concept together. I really like the way it turned out. Step 1. prepare your metal dash and powder coat or paint the entire dash plate with whatever color you prefer I chose to try Cowboy's new chrome powder and I think it looks awesome. I happen to think you could do a silver paint or white or maybe even linen beige any of those would look great. Step 2. Get out your decals. the red die cut vinyl (Wheel Horse) decal and apply on the top of your dash. the black letters for the rib are printed on a clear adhesive vinyl which is almost invisible on the chrome powder. It is long, skinny and thin but really pretty easy to lay down on the rib. I found it easier to line up the word ignition centered under the hole for the ignition switch off course. then the throttle lettering will be positioned correctly when laid down. then just work your way back to the left till it is all applied. You should have about a 1/16th left hanging over each end of the rib which you trim off with your exacto knife. Step 3. Remove your black and brushed chrome decal for the bottom of the dash plate from it's backing paper. step 4. position it up against the bottom of the rib with the lock arrow centered over the throttle hole. If it is lined up close to center you will have about 1/16" of decal hanging over the left side of the plate and about 1/4" hanging over the right end and bottom. IT should look like the following image when you turn it over to trim. step 5. turn your plate over and lay the bottom flat against your table (preferably a cutting mat) and trim all excess decal from your plate. then turn it back over and trim out all the holes . BOOM your done!! Much easier to install and you do not have to fight the rib trying to make the vinyl stay down in the creases. What do ya'll think.

What about a simple lever on a heavy base Eric? It could break down easy. Or use a fork in a tree and a pole! I just throw my back out, lift with my legs and grunt and (sometimes fart) while I’m swapping tractor engines... even though there is a cherry picker right outside my shop.
