Hey guys! Just picked up my first horse, it's a C-100. I think it's a '75, paid $300 for it. Has a mowing deck but I don't know what size. I'm on my way home with it so I'll have to find out more in a bit!

Finally got the stack installed, getting that threaded pipe out of the head needed a little persuasion but all went well, and it looks fantastic thanks to Jim Kemp!

I currently have this saw mill hooked up to an Oxford Allen scythe , I plan to convert it to run on one of my tractors hopefully it will fit to my RJ58 it already has a kohler k90 which I plan to transplant onto the RJ

Now mind you guys this was all done with TURF tires, and no WEIGHTS 'cept for my carcass in the seat. Sure ther was some tire spinning going on but the old girl and I soldiered on. Less than tank of gas.

Well since Hillbilly didn't want extended seat time to come over with his FEL and Tractorhead doesn't have a snorkel on his FEL I had to do it all with a lowly 867 and a mid mount. You canaries can make all the fun you want about the short comings of a 8 HP but here's the truth. Two loads of screenings all done with said tractor. New horse hide out ready to move in! When I started .... When I was done

My nephew has built two band saw mills. The first one was stationary and he found the dirt from moving the logs was destroying the blades. He has now built a mill on a trailer and he takes the mill to the tree keeping it as clean as possible. He uses two trailer spindles, wheels and tires to support and tension the saw blade, and the third drive wheel to drive the saw. I believe he uses an 8HP Honda engine. I'll try to get some pictures.

The wife of a good friend posted some pictures of storm damage at her house.I went to check on him and took these pictures. No one was hurt but anything can happen during clean up.

The 8" stack is a little quieter than the 6" only because the way the baffle is built , they have the same design but the gases have to travel a little more so that aids to make them quieter , its not by much but it is a little , I did a test about a year ago and made one 18" long with the same style baffle and it made a huge difference in sound , if you really want them to be quiet I can build one with a double baffle , and that also aids in them being quiet but they start to get pretty heavy and should be braced to the motor , I think I'm on the 5 or 6th baffle design , but now I'm trying to get the design down for the 300 series tractor muffler using the design from the stack muffler , I have a few out there waiting to hear back from the guys on fit and sound and if it works out they will also come with a polished aluminum heat shield for a custom look , stay tuned !!!

You an ex school teacher...What is you r answer and why???? sounds like a test 74 should be a piston to piston 73 a hydro gear. You can do some repair work on a piston to piston...more so than a hydro gear. My experience is very good with hydro gears, to me they are not quite as sensitive to foreign object damage (chewed up parking brake) but if they are damaged it is repair by replacement.

@JAinVA Well Jim just proves tall Virginia pines are no match the wind. Hopefully there was not too much damage. The way the wind was blowing up here I thought I was going to find all the roof shingles in the neighbors yards. Got lucky and just had to pick up a few small branches .

Any lawn and garden solenoid will do the job. Auto parts stores, Tractor Supply and even Wallyworld carry them. The one in the picture has two small terminals, one of them would need to be grounded for it to work.

I spent the day with Mark today while he received his second of now 4 scheduled chemo treatments. He is in good spirits and is convinced he can beat this. I told him the Red Square family is sending prayers and good wishes. We all thank you for your help in fighting this battle.

Seems I might have stirred some opinions (good and bad) of the Amish folk. I don't agree with some of their philosophy as at times it appears hypocritical, but I have had pretty good relationships with those I have dealt with. I have seen them hire a high tech engineering firm to do a seismic study of the farm creating a geological map of the water table to find the perfect location of the wells to irrigate the farm and greenhouse. When I questioned the owner about the long distance the wells were located from the greenhouse and the large pumps that would be required to move the water, he explained they use compressed air to power almost all their equipment and the well casings are sealed and pressurized. No pumps are used, the water is pushed by the compressed air. Yesterday, they moved two large propane tanks near the barn. I assume the compressor will be driven by a propane fueled engine. I hope they have a good nelson muffler on the engine as it will probable see 24/7 duty. I am impressed watching the 2-6 men build the house and 40'X80' barn in 4 weeks. Both were stick built on site with the exception of the barn roof trusses. Yes, the deer population will suffer and my view is changing, but I have been assured I can continue to maintain and use the 1/4 mile of right-of-way as I have for 50+years. And this change is certainly better than a housing development , industry park, or commercial hog farm. Another 164 acres of this same farm will be auctioned off next Saturday and due to the large amount of road frontage, I am afraid it will be developed. This parcel is located directly across the road from me. I'll post more pics as this develops. Thanks for following along ….

Nice weights. You may want to turn those bolts around. The exposed bolt ends WILL find your shins.

I have an identical pair of the 7" cast iron rims from a mid '50s rototiller. It looked like this one. It also had a front mounted sickle bar mower that was driven off the output shaft at the front. When my dad bought it we had been looking at a RJ, I was soooooo disappointed when he chose the Rototiller. I was counting on riding in style, not walking in the dirt!
  21. 3 points
I picked up these 2 Cast Iron Rims at the scrap metal yard while I was selling some old aluminum tin. Not sure what I’ll use them on, but there cool looking. They are cast in 3 pieces, right side , left , side, center spider him. They have a 1” bore. The right side has a cast # 1917 and the left side has cast # 1928. The old paint looks to be Red. The tire is a Goodyear , Studded Tread, R .80/4.00. The Tire has what I think is a date number 196797. Which I think reads 1967, 9th month, 7th day. They were on the remains of a broken gear box, possible from a tiller or walking tractor. Anybody recognize them??

Ok so after some more tinkering, yes I do have the magneto ignition. It seems to work now but the spark is really weak. It was good enough to actually get it to fire up and run though. I used an external fuel tank. The engine actually sounds really good so I'm happy there. Gonna order a new coil anyways just to be safe. Also a carb kit won't hurt as you can tell the carb is dirty. But it runs so that's sweet.

I don't dare say what I think because our moderators would have to shut this thread down if I did!

Since you have no spark and no crank I would suspect the ignition switch and related wiring before the solenoid. See if you have 12 volts on the little solenoid wire with the key in the crank position. If you don't check the switch and even though your ammeter moves you can have a bad connection there.

This picture was taken this morning with my son . I know there is a few photos of myself at that age on the same tractor with my father and grandfather. I'll dig them out later. Here's a start. Grandfather bought this gem brand new with all sorts of goodies. She's been working for 30 years and hasn't missed a moment.

I built my own bandsaw mill almost 20yrs ago and it is powered by an 8 horse Honda.I don't see how using any Wheel Horse tractor as power source would be practical. If you want to cut lumber you ought to rethink the WH option. If you want to tinker that's another thing. The first picture is the mill at refresh 5 years ago.The second is the missus standing in the doorway of our picnic shelter.Except for the salt treated poles all the lumber came off this mill.
  28. 3 points
It took me and the missus 3 hours to get this off the roof. The trick was to do no collateral damages and stay out of the hospital.Mission accomplished. The last hurricane we lost 5 or 6 trees but Isabel dropped over 50 here.It took us 3 months to clean up the mess.I feel lucky and don't want in any way to compare this to what the folks in Fla have ahead of them. The photos from there are stunning.

Do as much as possible in person and keep copious notes of times and dates and NAMES and facts of each interview with whoever, including your lawyer..notes written at the time (or close to ) are admissible in court ( where if you get there will be your best protection. ) A small journal would be invaluable...

With regard to health insurance, I did have an experience that may help you at some point Randy. Due to a dispute over vacation, I retired at 62 , took my pension, and began working as a contractor for the same company without any benefits. Under the COBRA law, I was able to keep my company group policy for two years. Of course I had to pay the full amount, but it was about two times what I was paying while I was an employee, around $300/month for pretty good health insurance for Mrs. K and myself. That ended when I was 64, so I had to buy insurance for another year. That cost me $1100, month and that was for a lousy $7500 deductible policy. I was then 65 and eligible for Medicare. My wife was 6 months from being 65, and that is when I learned there is a "short term health insurance available. The cost for this was $100/month. Just some info if you end up in this situation. OH, like Jim said, good luck with the SS system. I made the mistake of taking their suggestion and enrolled for SS and Medicare on line three months before my 65th birthday. Someone dropped the ball and it took me many hours waiting in line at the SS office to get it resolved.

@RandyLittrell Randy I had to take disability in 2006 due to a fractured vertebrate . Based on my experience here is what I know . You can not be working at any job. A doctor has to write a boat load of stuff explaining you can not work at your profession and may have to include why you can't be trained to do something else. Get all of this done and go to a law firm that specializes in Social Security Disability Claims. I about drove my self nuts trying to do the work myself. I was turned down the first time. Lawyer got me disability in about 4 weeks. There is a set amount of money that a lawyer can charge for handling your claim. Social Security will back pay you. Say for example you quit working Nov.1 of this year and it takes 6 months for Social Security to say ok you are disabled. They will back pay you for the entire time. After 2 years of disability you are eligible for Medicare no matter what your age. Are your a veteran ? If so try to get health benefits from the VA.

Congratulations on your new C-100! I am originally from Oklahoma.... grew up in Tulsa in 1963, moved to Bartlesville in 1981, then to NW Arkansas in 2003. Folks live in Claremore. In the process of acquiring my first Wheel Horse (a 1974 C-160). I own a brother to Wheel Horse... a 1981 Speedex 1631. Good luck with yours! (Will be in Hinton at Red Rock Canyon soon. Really looking forward to it... will be our 3rd time there in as many years.)

Welcome to RedSquare @Nat Faust. What part of Oklahoma are you in, I'm in Shattuck, up in the NW corner of the state, glad to see another Okie here. Looks like a great find for a first tractor, I still remember the day I brought my first one home, didn't take long for that one to multiply into 5. Maybe one of these days you me and @Daddy Don can all meet up somewhere to have lunch and discuss tractors...would be great to meet you and to see Don again

Yeah I had a guy that was going to sell me his weights then he sold them from under me before I could get there go figure ! The 25 pounders measured 11 3/8 in diameter not sure what that is in millimeters. All you have to do is take a piece of flat steel cut it to the diameter of the inside of the wheel and then make your connection for the weights. This is what I'm going to do because the shipping cost is more than the weights themselves.

In stead of testing the small solenoid terminal place the probe on the metal base of the solenoid and try starting. If you have power at the base the solenoid in not grounded. If you don't have power there the solenoid is suspect. The ignition is magneto type so don't look for power there. It is self powered. Garry
  40. 2 points
Make sure the solenoid is grounded. Loosen and retighten the mounting bolts before writing it off.

On the job is a lot different then off the job for one thing. Also, the laws may be a little different in your state. I think the first thing is to talk to your doctor...they should have an idea of how it works for your situation, and they may also know what the next step is. The best advise I read above...take excellent notes including dates, times, phone numbers & extentions and names of who you talk with.

Pretty sure those are off of a model T or 2 Rototiller or an early Troy-Bilt Horse. Found some pictures here: http://www.zucksrototillers.com/ROTOTILLER/Model T/index.html

Exactly.Plus you are having to move the carriage and log every stroke. The fellow who designed this mill,William Rake also had a desigh for a verticle band and I guess you could use a WH tractor as a power source.I opted for this design.By the way W Rake is a located in PA.Quite the tinkerer. Thanks for the compliment. The brown siding is from boards sawed as the result of hurricane Isabell.I would have lost lots of wood had it not been for the mill. I don't know how to embed a U-tube vid but if you go there and type in boat trailer band mill you can see this machine in use.The slabs on the lower right came from the log being processed.
  44. 2 points
Nice work on the mill and the porch Jim. The mill is similar to the two my nephew built. A tractor powered mill would have to be stationary with the log on a mowing carriage. The problem with the moving log is the carriage would have to be 2X the length of the log.

If you aren't committed to a design yet and you're still looking for ideas, you might want to check out the sawmill featured on a YouTube channel hosted by Cecil Skinner. I think his channel is titled "Off-grid Homesteading with Cecil Skinner." This guy and his wife Heather are mostly off grid in a small community in rural Canada. Cecil does some remarkable backwoods engineering. He built his mill using an engine from his old Wheel Horse. It's super functional and the design is super simple. Started with a big vertical bandsaw that must have come from a school auction or some kind of industrial sale. He saws mostly softwood so the bandsaw set up works like a chard for him. You've got to keep in mind that his mill is a rough sawmill and to finish the boards you've got to take more steps like proper sticking, drying, planing and jointing. Cecil has hundreds of videos posted of his sawmill, logging, construction and work on engines, snow machines and miscellaneous equipment. The guy is a do-all and really hustles. Great info and I find his work entertaining, to boot! Cheers! Dave

I'd like to help ya Randy but around here old horses go to the glue factory! What you laughin about Jimbo??? yer next! Seriously I am in the middle of trying to get my boy on disability due to him having high fuctioning autism. You will be turned down multiple times that I can tell you for sure. You will need medical records beyond no end and must give SS privy to all your medical records so now might be the time to fess up about that sex change operation! A lawyer is not required but is a must have when a SS judge has to hear your case. Most lawyers fees are limited as Jim mentioned and will charge a percentage of the back settlement so the larger that is the more willing one will be to take your case...go figure. Best place to start is at your local SS office and online for more info. They won't care if you used to make 6 figures doing body work but if you can make 6 bucks soda jerking ... yer gonna have a tough row to hoe. Warning by the time yer done SS will mean something from the 1940s! Sad to say this but after hours of sitting in a SS office with my boy, the endless paper work and the endless parade of people who were just plain too fat & lazy to work and just looking for a free ride or looking to work the system was disgusting.

What a fantastic tool it be now, Tryed it to work first time with my improoved Wheelhorse and found, there are some benefit's, they make Work a lot more fun. I can't grasp before, how much things can be made easyer and quicker with a simple Frontloader. What a fun to deal with... Only one thing i have to think about, the Hydraulics Pump is actually feeded by Drivetrain, if i press the clutch, i have no Hydraulics at all. - that was maybe another issue to be improoved later. Firstly do an fast Trim- cut to the Hedge, then clean the Road, from dirt with the sweeper. Coool😎

Thanks to a PM from @JAinVA ,Here is an update on Marks condition. As stated in the first post, He recovered from the surgery where a portion of his right lung and 6 lymph nodes were removed. One of the nodes tested malignant prompting a series of chemo treatments. The first treatment was followed by a tough week where severe heartburn and hic cups caused Mark to be unable to sleep or eat resulting in him losing 12 pounds. After several different meds, we got this under control, and he was feeling good last week. So this week, he started working 1/2 days, but is feeling tired and having periods of nausea. He is scheduled for the second chemo treatment next Friday. I will keep you updated. Thanks again for the reminder Jim. Ed
