Unfortunately if you sell enough, this will inevitably happen to you. My rule is always receive payment before shipping, because unfortunately if you trust people you don't know that will happen and I expect people I buy from to be the same way. Luckily, this group of people here at Redsquare seems to be a great group of trustworthy people and that is a rare thing in this day and age! Sorry you got jipped!

Normally I'm not one for vanity over function. But I have always liked the black or stainless heat shield on the Wheelhorse mufflers. One of the many details that make these tractors standout. I found one used off a 5/20, about an inch longer than my 12hp muffler but that didn't bother me. I marked the mounting location for 4 of the 6 holes. Then I found the spots and tacked on 4 8-32 bolts. Next I put the shield on and cut the excess stud off. I left enough to put nuts with lock washers and brass acorn nuts on. I think it looks pretty good. Now I just need a 520 swept axle and reduction steering👍

I'm with Richard on letting it go as well as Jim about the one bad apple. There could be extenuating circumstances. Many years ago and not Wheel Horse related I thought I was getting stiffed when I paid for an item and didn't receive it. After many emails that were never replied to I finally send one that she did reply to. Her husband had passed away in the midst of our transaction. She finally sent the item and even doubled it to apologize. With her information on the return address I verified what she said and felt terrible about hounding her. I feel that 99%+ folks are still honest so if you were unfortunate to come across one that isn't try not to let it sour you with everyone. In my experience a person who doesn't trust others may have an issue being trusted.

Good info fellas - might be an '86, the Kohlers S/N shows its an '86, but unfortunately theres NO tag under seat - or anywhere that I can find. Found the probable 'no run' cause, first thing I always ck is for spark and she didnt have any. After some serious cleaning of connections & inspection I found the problem, the ole infamous glazed points. Pulled them out and cleaned em and got a good hot spark - next will be to get a fuel supply. Thats for tomorrow.... I've had enough for today.

I used the newly acquired 417 Auto with the 48" deck for mowing duty yesterday. I like the big tractor feel and sound of the twin Kohler. And that 48" deck makes a nice cut. But, now I remember why I converted the 520 to a dedicated snow chucker. Those twins throw too much heat to use as a mower in this 85 degree heat. May be a dedicated plow tractor is coming.

If I know the buyer, I will accept a check as payment. However, in any other case I will insist on PayPal. If you don’t have a PayPal account, you can create a new account before you pay, or if you don’t want to create an account, you can pay using a credit or debit card. In any case, DO NOT SHIP UNTIL PAID! This is how I avoid trouble. To me it's a no-brainer. If the buyer is legit, he will understand you waiting for payment.

Just a heads up I am now the new owner of the 314-8. Picked it up along with the snow plow, spare plow A-frame, and wheel weights. I haven't had a chance to mess around yet as I have some cars to work on but, it'll be getting new fluids and I've ordered blades so once those come in I'll throw them on and give the lawn a mow. Not much else to add. I've been reading previous posts as most of my questions have assuredly already been answered 100 times over. I feel a bit stupid for linking to the CL ad as I usually pay attention to forum TOS whenever I sign up. I never really thought I'd be this hyped about a tractor/mower, but now I'm hooked. Now you guys got me scouring ebay and CL for parts/attachments! Damn you, wheelhorseforum!

Yep, my HC is much faster. My 11 year old daughter loves to be towed around the yard in a wagon with that one hitting as many bumps as possible.

So I have been looking for a decent 48" deck to use on my D-160 and ran across a CL ad for what was said to be - a kinda sad looking - "314-8 " with what appeared to be a nice looking 48" deck, sez 'make offer'. After some back & forth I struck a deal with seller for $150. So I took off on the 3hr drive to pick it up and I get there and the hood has "416-8" decals!. I dont pay much attention to it - except for the deck and it alone was worth the 150, so load er up and head home. Get up this morning, unload it and get my first real look at it and right away see the engine is a K321 and shows absolutely NO signs of being a replacement? - Was the hood changed and it is a 314-8 or? - now, this is the latest model WH I have ever had and I'm not familiar at all with them (I've had C's & D's) so my question is - what is it? Oh, and from my looking it over I find its in amazingly original condition and seems to be in good condition under the dirt/rust - I think I just may have got me a nice tractor for the price of a nice deck.

Ha! Made ya look! So my new Northern Catalog came in the mail a couple weeks ago and these snow shovels caught my eye. It’s a 5 minute job to assemble and feels pretty sturdy. It’s made to push snow as well as to “dig” it. Hope I don’t need it 🙄 but I’ve been in my house 30 years and have never had a snowless winter.

Moderators, @stevebo, Rather than start another thread in restorations, perhaps this thread can be moved? All, There really is not much to these beasts once you have torn it down it is really quite an efficient design. I like these little tractors more and more. The whole tractor minus frame disassembled: While frame is not destroyed it is for the purposes of an original patina tractor. So I'll be using the frame from Ol'Joe. I was able to save the original serial number by gently heating the underside of frame and using a freshly sharpened putty knife.

evanloock is spot on Jim. Also as @stevasaurus said, there are no 500's. Someplace I did see a 500 on a list but it was an error and it misled folks. Aldon, here's another thought for your steering wheel depending on how close to original you wanted it. I filled a few minor issues on mine and used Dupli-color truck bed coating on it. It gave the wheel a great feel, looks great and seems to be really durable.

If the engine runs OK,I doubt it needs a rebuild. If it goes forward and reverse,I doubt the tranny needs to be rebuilt.I would : Change all fluids. Change air filter. Change spark plug. Change ignition points and condenser. Rebuild carburetor. Change entire rubber gas line. And install new fuel filter. If tires don't hold air....change them. Most expensive thing I mentioned here are 4 tires. The rest of the items are in-expensive and I'm sure you could do most of the work yourself. If not.everyone here likes to help.Me included.

The 418 series used Magnum twins with full pressure lubrication. They are great engines (really the same as Series II KT 17s but with a magneto ignition.) Never sure why WH didn't spec an oil filter..some users did and you can retrofit one)

The inside of tranny appeared fine from what I could see through the shifter opening and the fluid I drained was good. So no need to flush imo. As far as the GT22-8, progress continues. Currently waiting on a critical part. However updates to the build thread will occur after the Stevebo meet and greet.

Either one will work. they are a common 1 3/8 od x 3/4 id and should be flanged. Google 110513 bearing and you will have them coming out your ears for cheap. Speaking of cheap do watch that a little as some are pretty flimsy & low quality and come from guess where? if they are sealed both side don't worry pick the inner seal out before installing. They do come pre-greased which is fine for a trailer queen but for a worker you'll want to be able to give them a shot of grease via that zerk you should find on the rim hub.

MY PROGRESS REPORT; Removed deck from tractor and cleaned underside of deck using a putty knife, high pressure water and a wire wheel on my right angle grinder. Using my right angle grinder with a 1/8" cutting wheel, I cut a 5' length of 1/16" stainless steal to 4" wide with a small1/4" lip. I carefully bent and fitted the piece to follow the inside of the front curve of my deck with the 1/4" lip about a 1/4" below AND facing the blades. Using several C clamps to hold everything together, I drilled 6 equally spaced, 1/4" holes for attaching the piece to the deck, I then removed the SS piece so I could give the complete underside a nice thick coat of E-Z Glide paint. After the paint dried, I bolted the whole thing back together using 1/4" SS round head bolts. Today, after sharpening the blades, I with mount the deck on the tractor and test out my modification to see if it is all worth while. After 3 weeks without rain, we finally got a 1/2" a couple of nights ago, so unfortunately, the grass is not exactly growing like crazy.

Yeah, that's it Bob. This one has a lift frame that mounts to the transmission hitch pin and is connected to the tiller by a flat bar on the left side. I have this frame swiveled up above the axle bracket for picture taking purposes. I gotta admit, I only know how to mount Mad Max. And that's because I built it. This WH design looks more involved than my Mad Max. Especially if you have a frozen hitch pin.

It's not actually attached as didn't have the heart to drill holes in any of my tractor hoods.

All 1961 701 and 551 tractors had the two piece transmission while the 401 retained the three piece trans.
  28. 3 points
So lemme get this straight @Racinbob ...you're saying some '61's (551's or others) did have a two piece in them? I was always under the thought that 2 piece tranny were not brought out till early '62? Was it just late 61 that the f plate frames were being produced? Please excuse my ignorance on your thread Aldon but I like to pick Bob's brain... lots of good stuff wise in ther! Never mine Bob ...in thinking now a 701 would have had a two piece!

You have what is commonly referred to as a single stage short chute. Check for play in the chain. With use, the links can stretch. Look for the connector link and make sure it looks OK. The chain itself can be tightened by adjusting the idler sprocket. Make sure the auger and all the bearings are free and have no radial play. Check and tighten the set screws in the drive pulley and sprocket on the jack shaft. Check the belt tensioning spring. It should tighten the belt so you only have about 1/2" deflection with slight pressure. Check the chute rotator cable and replace if it is worn or twisted badly. I have successfully used heavy string trimmer line to replace cables. If all is OK, I would keep a spare belt and a spare chain connector link where you can find them when the blizzard arrives.

I know the K341(16hp) peak torque is 28.25ft lbs. @2600rpm with max. brake hp 16@3500rpm torque is 23.5ft. lbs. And according to the Harborfreight site the Predator 22hp has 45 NM or 33.19 ft. lbs. at 2500 rpm.

The first series Kohler twins weren't the greatest as they were splash lubed vs pressure lubed like an Onan.

Not concerned about what the inside may be like or going to flush it Aldon? Hey how are you gonna get anything done on the Predator project you keep messing with these little beauts?!?!?

Lights are a little brighter today. The b s h sounded familiar but couldn't connect the dots. That will be a kill relay. The B&S engines use a magneto ignition so no battery power is needed or wanted in the ignition wire. Wheel Horse at the time used a battery style of ignition switch plus a kill relay to control the ignition. There were two different versions of the relay used. Garry

I run 89 octane with 10 % Ethanol in everything and never had any problems with it messing up the motors. Maybe I don't use them as much as some of you guys. Pour some Sea Foam in the tanks about once a month and make sure filters are not clogged . I have replace all gas lines and filters every time I got a new or other gas powered thing. Maybe I am just lucky on the Ethanol usage.

Crashman tractor: DONE!!!! 14.7x11.7x5.7 Front - 1.3 gl/tire 20x8x8 Rear - 5 gl/tire Total weight add 104 lbs I got the fitting and a hand pump from Tractor Supply. They are selling RV antifreeze for $3/gallon so it cost me about $36 to fill the tires as I didn't use the whole 12 gallons. I'll drive around the yard today after work and see how it feels.

I too think that most people are in fact honest, and a few ruin it for the rest. Isn't that how it is with everything in life. Also, I can't help notice the problematic situation in always wanting cash first, even if it is the logical option for the seller. In the cash first situation, the only difference is, that it is the other part in the transaction that needs to trust, and run the chance of being stiffed................ Just saying It takes two to tango

Bendix. Not shown in the diagram is that you were supposed to also use a RF shield under the hood to cut out (or more likely down) the electric interference from the engine.

Thanks! After playing around with this for a while and not have all the tools I came to the same conclusion and removed the assembly from the axle. Will remove and replace the bearings on both front wheels as there is very little sign of grease anywhere! Thanks again everyone! This will be a nice tractor with a little TLC!
