8 pointsI saved this jewel from the scrap yard this morning. About a 30 minute trip and 20 minutes of that was backing the trailer up a very winding steep driveway. Has a fairly good deck shell and the gears and spindles feel OK. Plus a sleeve hitch with a pin that is actually free in the transmission. And 2 link vee bar chains.

6 pointsHi all, New here Im from Cheshire UK. Just got a barn find 1977 C120 that I plan to restore, so will be asking lot of questions. Cheers Gene

6 pointsSo one of my bucket list tractors has been a 701. I've came across many but couldn't make a deal happen or there just wasn't enough of a 701 to restore. Picked up a few that were bits and pieces of a 701. But they were broke down and shelved for parts inventory. But came across this one on CL last Friday and I inquired. Well the gentlemen offered to deliver it on his way to work and give me paperwork for it and extra parts. So I didn't even knock down the price. He said he swore up and down the machine runs great and he mowed with it until the front spindle broke. So he delivered it this morning! I had a extra spindle waiting and battery. Well she fired right up and drove around like a dream! Even came with 4 nice hubcaps. Now just got to give it a complete tear down and go through it top to bottom and bring it back to new! I'll post the serial number when i get chance to slowly remove some paint.

6 pointsA Special Thank You to all you guys. I am taking Chris out to dinner tonight (something I only do during Wheel Horse shows)...Mexican and Margaritas. Luckily, I have Friday off for reconfiguration. "I woke up this morning and I got myself a beer". Not really!! Harvested the concord grapes yesterday and made about 12 gallons. If it turns out good, and it looks like it will be good already, it will make an appearance at the shows next year. Life is good my friends...thank you for the Birthday Wishes and I am glad to have tomorrow off.
-
6 pointsWell I have had better luck than bad luck with Wheel Horse folks. Maybe my guy was mistaken. Is what it is. Just hope it turns out okay. Its a hobby, afterall, not my life's work.

4 pointsI noticed seeing badges in members signature saying "520 Club Member" I thought that I would introduce a more formal 520 club to see how it goes. You are free to join and participate in the 520 Club banter, and remember discussion outside of 520's is discouraged!

4 pointsGave the little horse a much needed bath. And he is finally inside a warm dry barn with other horses. Next step.....see if we can find some fire ..... there was a coil under all the grease and dirt. The muffler repair may be a challenge ..... I'm thinking STACK.

4 pointsThank you for your continued support of the Social Security Trust Fund, all of us oldsters appreciate it.
-
4 pointsOf course, placing the lock washer behind the blade will cause the blade to cut a bit lower than the other two spindles....if you are going for a golf course putting green that is... manicured...otherwise... not a concern as most of us use them as brush-hogs anyway..

4 pointsMany times the customers attitude affects the performance of the shop. My starter Generator guy and machine shop guy have always been fair to me.
-
4 pointsWell your 701 looks great! I got a 702 I just finished up earlier this year. It was a custom project me and my boy did.
-
4 pointsI have a 702 project that I will start in the spring. I hope it turns out looking as good as the 701. I will post pictures of it during and on completion.

3 pointsSo ya this is my first post here and my first riding mower ever. I'm 32 had to get somthbig for .87 acres and came across this mower. I have been browsing offer up and other sites and see the JD's, Troy builts, Murray, and so on. I came across this while driving around. Guy let me ride it and for some reason but it just felt good. I'm into old stuff and like to tinker. Just seeing all the gauges and levers with grease points and what not made me want it. I'm sure I paid more then I should have $500 but I don't see why it can't run another 30 years. I drove it about 15min home from where I got it ahaha its a 1990 model 312-8 according to the model numbers. Hope to use this forum as a repair and maintain excellent resource. Also for modification if possible.

3 pointsI like to remove the tires, bead blast , prime, paint and then mount the tires so there won't be any rust at the tire beads.
-
3 pointsYour other horses seem to be checking out the new member of the herd! All standing there staring at him.
-
3 pointsThanks, I talked to him on the phone and he told which one to order. You guys are fast and I'm not complaining. Mal

3 pointsI used Valspar "cut ruby" red on my D-250 over a year ago. the paint went down nice and it looks rich even a year later and no clear coat. I will be doing my 211-5 next and I just picked up the paint last week.

3 pointsFilled the gas tank with concrete. Now weighs 52# exactly. Cheap rear weight for $4.55.
-
3 pointsHonestly didn't think about draining the oil. I notice this engine vibrates the frame more than my Kohler in my 312-8. Overall good investment for slightly over $200. It's just as peppy as the 8hp Koehler.

2 pointsPlastigage is great with a round crank. Once the crank is worn and out of round, plastigage is worthless. But, on a freshly turned or new crank it's great. Be sure to check ring end gap with the Taiwan rings. The one I just did, the top and oil rings were fine. The middle ring was way to tight.

2 pointsBy the way mike, your boss call all of us as you leave so we can get in line ahead of you!

2 pointsExcellent point and I apologize for not having included a safety concern. This was a good post you added and well worth repeating. Your respirator has to have cartridges made for the product you are using and a dust mask isn't a respirator! http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/build-yourself/113852-enamel-hardener-paint-safety.html

2 pointsThought I would update this post for anyone in the future, I ordered the book on Aug. 29th and received it today Sept. 7th. The transaction seemed to go as expected. I have not read though it yet but look forward to it. Yes the book was expensive but not out of line for the quality of a USA printed book. I am a woodworker and the former editor of a woodworking magazine. started his own company " The Lost Art Press" publishing high quality woodworking books. . His newest book is ready to ship. Do a Google search for Deluxe Roubo On Furniture book and check out the price and see what you think.

2 pointsHappy Birthday ya big galoot! I only worked 8 1/2 hrs. today in your honor. Of course I made up for it with a 12hr. stint on Tues. I called Elgin DPW and alerted them to an ozone issue tomorrow so you won't have to worry about calling it in! Stay safe and don't order Italian in a Mexican joint! I'll be thinkin of you at 4:30 AM my time as I get up for another fun day. "Lets see here. I had Mexican last night. Do I really want to pull on this handle too hard! "
-
2 pointsYes knew that Chris, Mine has the solid seat pan & pretty much the same patina. It's been said the 400s with the solid pans were possibly made very early in '60.
-
2 pointsHappy Birthday Steve and Steve on a Stick . Don't have too much Mexican Food tonight , methane clouds are bad for other peoples health and you don't want to be on the National News in a bad way. Look forward to seeing you at the Big Show ( Squonk made me say that ) .

2 pointsI do not like to argue about which paint and such is "best" because everyone's skill can vary. There is no doubt that catalyst makes the paint lay down nicer and dry quicker. The clear coat I have tried so far does the same, but may not be as durable as the hardener stuff i have used before. The reason I am not using catalyst any more is that I have noticed i am not tolerating it the same as I used to even when using an activated charcoal mask. I do not think I would even consider using it without outside pressurized air feeding the mask.. Here is a simple discussion by guys like us with different opinions like we are likely to have.http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/build-yourself/113852-enamel-hardener-paint-safety.html I am not telling anyone what to do and which products to use, but at least the info supplied is a place to start your own research into additional safety precautions you can take whether or not you continue to use the isocyanurates. Truck bed liner and the agri-guard i love to use on the underside of mower decks contain the stuff, so even when brushing those products, I stay down wind. Stay safe guys, Take the time to read the link [repeated here] http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/build-yourself/113852-enamel-hardener-paint-safety.html

2 pointsI had the same problem on one of mine. The solution I came up with was a 3/4" internal tooth lock washer between the spindle and blade which locked it in place and moved down the spindle far enough to center it again.
-
2 pointsThe reel itself is the same I think... just the mounting and maybe the lifting are different. To run that you'll need the extra mounting bracket that fits the front of the suburban and maybe a different lift rod. (I think? Never tried to mount this one to anything but the 'burb it came on!) Maybe that lift rod is long enough if you think about the few inches farther back it is mounted to a taller tractor frame. Here's a picture of mine mounted up. I've lightly circled the bracket you need. Essentially that raises it up to about the same mounting height that would have been on the 62 tractor. I actually currently have this mounted up and could get more pictures tonight if you want some.
-
2 pointsI have 633 WH with the 6.5 Predator motor and granted, it's a much smaller tractor but it has an abundance of power. I had to add 30 lbs of weight to the front to keep it planted on the ground.

2 points1960 and 1961 except the 701 call for a LMR-301. LMR-307 is not in the attachment list. Suspect the LMR-3072 is for the 7hp models but do not know. Click on the pictures below. The 701 and 1962 models used a LMR-303, LMR-304 and LMR3072. Garry

2 pointsIf the linear actuator only draws 15 amps even 20 why change the charging system. You are not operating the actuator a dump control continually, probably only a small fraction of the time. Battery will cover draw and then be recharged between uses. If you have a breakerless system the engine isn't using any other electricity for a ignition system so between uses of the actuator the battery will be getting well charged...unless you are working in the dark with lights on....

2 points. Not a bad buy, would make a great plow tractor looks very clean. You have joined the right group of people if your willing to learn a thing or 2
