Check it out! I found this RJ today as a lawn ornament. I knocked on the door and the guy ended up selling it to me for $200 with a plow and mower deck in awesome shape and all the manuals and receipts and even spare parts! I couldn't believe it. Hood has been repaired but its not destroyed, no muffler guard (typical), but its the original engine, belt guard, serial # sticker. Attachments are in remarkable shape compared to what I've seen. The skid shoes on the plow aren't even worn. Heres a couple pics, Ill take more tomorrow.

After reading about the potato plows i thought i would post a set that i made here in the UK. Very similar looking but i made mine as a pair and adjustable height and width, I haven't used them yet but can add weight to make them dig in. i'll let the photos tell the story.

Aldon, do you mind if I throw out a few facts about these transmissions? This may help some to understand what you are trying to do, or what you have run across. 1. Only 10 pinion transmissions are Limited Slip 2. All 10 pinion transmissions are Limited Slip 3. Not one 8 pinion transmission built by Wheel Horse has Limited Slip 4. All 10 pinion differentials have one axle shorter then the other...and so one end plate is shorter then the other...1 part # for left and a different part # for right 5. All 8 pinion differentials have axles that are the same length...1 part number for both axles 6. If a hydro has the 10 pinion differential or the 8 pinion differential...all of the above applies 7. Only the #5060 10 pinion LS differential (1968) had aluminum end plates...1969 and up have steel end plates 8. Service Bulletin #252 explains the conversion of limited slip differential to 8 pinion differential 9. If you have 4 pinions, you have 1" axles 10. If you have 8 or 10 pinions, you have 1 1/8" axles 11. All 1 1/8" axles from Wheel Horse transmissions "should" be able to interchange OK...what does all this mean? If Aldon has 2 axles the same length and they are the length he wants (so his tires fit), he will be putting them into an 8 pinion differential and he will not have limited slip. If he wants to modify (cut one axle shorter then the other), so as to have the same distance sticking out past the frame, then he could use a 10 pinion LS differential. Hope all that makes since.

I came across some old photos of my sons RJ 58 we restored about 8 or 9 years ago. Looks the same today and enjoyed this project with him. The white overspray on tires was cleaned off, I didn't want to dismount tires due to age and they hold air. I found a NOS plow for it last year and going to restore its original mower deck this year. Besides the plow, tractor is all original from previous owner who purchased it new. I will try and find more pics of tear down and rebuild.

Excellent feedback Steve! In fact, read your PM:-) Once I have consulted with the swami again, I may yet go with limited slip. It would save a whole lot hassle with developing turning brakes. So as mentioned previously, to get the ball rolling on non-tranny stuff. Just prior to winter I made a parts tractor run with @fast88pu so as they sat on the trailer when I returned and dismantled waiting for spring thaw to get started. Tentative - waiting on @Shuboxlover - swept axle, reduced steering set up. Highly probably this will be part of this build. 3 point procured from fellow member here who is selling reproductions on Ebay. Not sure if he is set up as vendor on the square. 22HP Predator procured. Plan is currently to use 29x12.5-15 AG tires on rear. For a couple reasons I decided to go with D series Hubs. 1, easier to do turning brake using go kart disc if I go that route, 2, more importantly, easier to build wheel to custom spec due to insert availability. Both the blank and insert available from miller tire. Shout out to Kyle who has helped me with this stuff quite a bit. Now the pics:

I have three stacks, a pepper shaker and one Nelson like yours. The Nelson is quieter by far. The stacks are quieter than the pepper shaker and yes they look the best, imho. Pepper shaker is certainly the cheapest. The stacks I have I bought from @jimkemp Send Jim a message and he can hook you up! I have painted mine with high heat paint and it holds up fairly well.

Thanks. Much appreciated. I think I spent all my time trying to find the bearing elsewhere using the S875B part number on the bearing. ***** I just ordered a pair ! ***** For those interested, here are some pics of the bearing comparisons, along with what I was able to measure them.....disclaimer "I am not a machinest" as such, take that into account. also a couple pics of the broken shift fork and the NOS parts. I will capture tractor stuff in the next post for those concerned that this thread is too Tranny heavy LOL Pics of GT14 Hydro Diff vs 8 speed 8 Pinion Diff before modification.

If you do any serious off roading then you may be aware of the term fuse.I'm not talking in terms of anything electrical but something in the drive train that is easily and cheaply repaired .This in the off road world would be a u-joint or a front hub.Torn up transfer case gears or any drive line gears for that matter are expensive and almost impossible to repair in the field. The reason I point to this concept is to caution against being to aggressive on limited slip.I would consider the spinning tire to be the fuse.Just something to think about.JAinVA

OK...the 5060 trans had aluminum plates...the 5071 and 5073 had steel plates. and yes you can interchange them. Actually, the #5060 I rebuilt had one of each...tells me someone else has been in there.

Jim can make them short, long, quiet, or loud and they are great quality at a reasonable price. I left mine natural color but I may paint it in the future.

Had the wife's Commando V8 on cleanup duty today. We had a lot of fairly large limbs in our yard so figured I'd use the tractor to drag them out. Anyhow I helped the neighbor kids drag a few limbs and came back to the house, parking the tractor outside the fence. Now let me set the scene for you, the starter is out on her tractor so we have to raise the hood and rope start it. I always be sure and put the tractor in neutral and set the brake before dismounting, as well as checking before I start it, but it slipped my mind today. I raised the hood, wrapped the rope, gave her a good pull, and she took off right into a fence post. Bent the hood a bit and mangled up the hood hinges real good. So now we have a Hoodless Horse until I get the time to try and straighten everything out. Worst part was my neighbor was standing in his yard enjoying a beer, he got a few good laughs at me trying to get to the tractor before it hit the fence. Luckily no one was hurt, but it very easily could've got bad real quick.

Not to steal your thunder or thread Aldon but @stevasaurus my 67 had AL plates and can the steel end plates be used on earlier units? Do you think WH knew the AL plates were a weak spot and went to steel? Those bearings are awfully close in dims Aldon but Lowell's won't work??

Hello... theres not not a lot of room in the housing, I took all the gears out because I didn't need them and it was been driven from the brake drum. The locker will fit with all the gears, but in order to make it selectable I would need to machine a selector in the back of the casing.

Just think if the fence wasn't there to stop it. Could have been much worse! I knew a guy who just restored a AC WD 45. Had a big blade on the front. He started it one day while not on it and it took off. The blade tore the metal siding of his shop open like a can opener, and one tractor fender got mangled.

I used to use photobucket and regularly paid for their old service (it used to be $25/ year for unlimited uploads!) to be rid of ads. Then they changed their format and made navigation and linking very terrible so I bailed. What I have learned is that there are very few good sites that are free. Some recommendations I have HEARD but not personally tried are: amazon photos (included as a prime member) and google photos (free if you use their "high quality" upload option which limits photos to 16 megapixels or less). I ended up buying a supporter membership to this forum because: a- third party sites ALWAYS change, you only have to spend a few moments looking at threads more than 5 years old to see TONS of broken links to outside hosting sites essentially ruining the original thread b- I use dropbox (paid) to backup all my photos from my phone, but it is TERRIBLE for sharing photos on forums c- I have been helped out so much here that I thought it was the least I could do to give back (I know everyone's financial situation is different, so that is up to them) because I have seen far too many forums sell out to larger firms and get ruined. What are your uses for photobucket? Maybe we can look at the pros and cons of the other services to find a best match.

I figured I would go ahead and start a thread that will capture some of one of my distinct projects. The plan I started with is a GT14 as starting point, a 22hp Predator, Electric PTO, Independent Hydraulic lift and 3 point for tiller etc. At the big show I had the luxury of hanging out with @stevasaurus and we discussed transmissions at length. I have wanted to add an 8 Speed to a GT14 for a good while and I picked Steve's brain quite a bit. In addition to this, Kyle aka @fast88pu dropped by and as we discussed GT14's with loaders and Hydros and my want to do a 8 speed, he flagged me to the GT14-8 with loader in one of the buildings and off we went to visually inspect it. One shortcoming of the straight swap which was easy to note upon viewing said modified tractor is that the axles are too short and do not come flush with the end of the hub when tires are fitted to appropriate clearance. I needed the visual to understand as Kyle already knew this as he had a similarly modified GT14 he had picked up from @scotty. So my project appeared dead in its tracks until I went out to Cody's in Scranton PA area and he told me that the axles in the Hydro Transaxles could be swapped into the 8-speed directly. Kyle was riding shotgun with me just by chance. So at some point in this day trip Kyle and I agreed to a deal where I took home a 8-speed he had on hand with 1 1/8" axles. Steve helped me out with all the bearings I needed as well as mentoring me on a few of the challenges I encountered. This particular 8-speed is one of few with slightly unique main bearings,,,,,,but I managed to source all the replacement bearings and get prepared for the project, then Winter came along to seriously slow things down. It should be noted that in many of the GT14 transaxles, if not most, the axles are different from one side to the other. one side is 14 1/8" and one side is 14 3/4". One of my axles was beyond redemption. Could not get two good sets from 2 parts transaxles. On hold until @ztnoo came to my assistance here and I now had two good 14 3/4" axles. Along the way it was suggested I should make use of the Limited Slip differentials from the Hydro transaxles if I could. I spent several hours over the holidays trying different combinations but could not figure a way to make it work. It is plausible that there is a different Limited slip set up or parts that would make this easy. Or, if I had access to machine shop I could do it. But with a bench and what parts I have on hand, I am moving forward with normal diff with only real change being that I am installing longer axles. One of the pics below shows the 3 different axle lengths. In the pics below, it may be difficult to read the tape measure but the width of the modified set up is 29 1/2. Additionally I have a couple pics of the limited Slip Diff Side pieces that hold the axle to the assembly. Note they are not same and both are different from the 8-speeds. Lastly a sketch drawn to scale as much as I could determine. I am not a draftsman but it should be close. I want to end up with (29x12.5-15 ags) I have decided to use D Series Hubs. Rim wise I will need custom back spacing and I have sourced the necessary rims and inserts from Miller Tire. Thats where I am at until I can remove a very stubborn hitch pin from one tranny half after which I can start rebuild using new bearings and will post pic when I reach that point. eta a few weeks:) I dont do well in the cold.

If your limited slip is working, then a heavier spring is not going to do anything. You are trying to fix it and it ain't broke.

This is the correct place for my potato growing attachments. They are based on standard agricultural parts. One is a middle buster I use to dig the furrows. The one with the tines is based on a 10" cultivator sweep. The nice thing about the digger is that I don't have near the damage to the spuds as I did hand digging.Back likes them, it is quicker and definitely worth the effort to make them.

Hello WH folks. I bought this Bronco 14 as a parts tractor for the 68 Charger. It's complete, minus the engine. Does anyone know how I can find out what year it is? Basically I'll be stripping it down to bare bones and using what parts I can. The body, frame, and chassis will be used for a special project later.

That's an important point as far as I'm concerned. There's some classic, very informative threads from the early days of RedSquare that are truly almost worthless without the pictures. Some of those photos I'm sure could be re-created by the original poster (if he's still around, and could find them on his camera or computer). But to me it's much easier to simply insert a picture directly into a post, and not have to worry about whether Photobucket or any other third party is going to move or lose it in the future.

Yes that can very easily happen. Hauled four trailer loads of limbs out of our yard today, as well as cut 4 of the bigger ones up for firewood. Still have one maybe two to go and then move on down the street...have several more yards to go. Then comes the work with the bucket truck straightening up what's left of the trees around town

Craig, I was too darn mad when it happened to think about taking pictures, the hood didn't fare too bad. Just put a bend in it right above where it attaches to the hinge on the LH side. I tried to straighten it out on the tractor and got most of it taken care of, but the hinges are tweaked so it won't set down and latch. Normally I would've taken it in the shop and fixed it right away but didn't want to waste too much time with all the cleanup we have to do. So I just unbolted the hood and carried on...I will get a pic of the hood tomorrow but there's not too much damage to see on it

Good advice. Besides WHs one of my passions is two cylinder JD crawlers. These machines have no safety switches at all. I am aware of someone standing behind one and reaching over the fender to pull the starter rod.The clutch was engaged and the trans in reverse. He never did that again.I will leave it to your imagination what happened when the tractor started.

It is a slap of reality to buy a WH for a $100 & then spend more for a belt or muffler. Often the muffler alone costs double the total cost of the whole used tractor! Thank goodness for great WH bargains!
