11 points2016 is almost history and as we start the new year the big show is on many of our minds. The 520 is the feature tractor this year so I am doing a 20% discount on all kits in the 300 400 and 500 series categories at redoyourhorse.com now thru Jan 31st 2017. All discounts are shown in your cart before checkout. This 20% discount is in addition to forum support members existing 15% store wide discount for the 2017 calendar year. Thanks for supporting the forum. As always your support discount is reflected in the list price when you log into your account. If you are a Red Square paid support member and do not see the 15% discounted prices when logged in then you need to PM or email me with your info so I can add your account to the support group. Please pm or call me with any concerns on your account standing. 309-335-5606

10 pointsSo, today I happened to find a 502 on craigslist, that didn't look too bad, so I decided I'd take a peek. The ad said that it hadn't run in a few months, but ran good before that. I had no issues with that, and in person he told me the same story, knowing this, I hadn't paid too much attention to the motor. Tractor had been repainted by the person I got it from, he said he worked at a body shop, looked pretty decent, and he had done some pin striping, which is alright, had some "502" number stickers around the thing which are coming off as soon as I can peel them off, though. Tranny shifted into the gears and rolled fine with no odd noises, so I decided, sure, why not. So I took it. Going over the tractor once I was home, though, I realized that the previous owner must have repainted the tractor, and never finished getting everything back together. The motor has no governor, and theres a zip tie holding the throttle cable in place, around the exhaust which obviously would have melted after the first run, but none the less, I am happy with my purchase and just have a new project. Tractor came with a sorry looking snow plow, a siezed mower deck, home made weights, and an extra "Parts" k141 with no governor parts either , but he did also throw in a pair of like new Vintage Carlisle Turf Saver tires which look like the Firestone Town and Country tires. So, all in all, I'm happy. Just remember, Be observant.

5 pointsHello, all. I spent years mowing & moving snow with my Dad's Wheel Horses in the 60's and 70's, and my wife and I finally acquired our own. I don't know why it took us so long. Our cars include a 60 Buick Invicta Flattop, and a 52 Chevy pickup daily driver, so the 856 fits right in. The machine should be familiar to many, a 1966 856 previously owned by Joe W9JAB. It looks as good today as it did in his original pics from 2009. We found it on the Classifieds here. It needs some cleaning, and a few fixes, but it's a great running survivor. The purchase even included his famous 'Black Sabbath' snow blower - it came with "A Bit of Finger". www.wheelhorseforum.com/topic/14915-careful-this-horse-bites/ We are looking forward to our new horse. Thanks Chuck & Sally

4 points@857 horse Howard just eat more potatoes and bread , that will add a few pounds.

4 pointsI've made a little more progress, the front wheels have new bearings and are back on, I got the gauges all cleaned up and the dash installed. I picked up a new wiring harness (thanks Tom) and put it in this afternoon and took the starter apart, cleaned it up and got it back on.

I have to stay away for now - been sick with a sinus infection but I'll get plenty of time to spoil the little guy , same as with the other 3..granddaughter has had it pretty good and 8yrs old now - she has ridden on all the Horses I've had except the big D , she's a bit intimidated by it for now . 4 pointsHere is mine sorry for the pic with the tire off its the only one I have on this phone. We had almost made it home and the right front brake locked up so took it all apart to assess the damage lol. She's an all original 1966 Ford F350 with the 352 and 4-speed, just rolled over 100k original miles when this was taken. She was my brush hauling truck but since I'm getting out of the tree business she now just sits. Plan to eventually restore her and use her for my hauler as time and finances allow. Also planning on doing away with the steel bed sides and going back with a wooden stake bed. And that's my 1277 that started this whole addiction in the pic as well. And the second pic is my 1980 C30 with the 292 inline 6 and 4-speed, not pretty by any means but she always starts and gets the job done lol.

4 pointsI have a 656 that I mounted a Honda on....great running, trusty and very thrifty on fuel. It's also quiet, bet I could hold a cell phone conversation while driving it! Mike.......
-
3 pointsFinally got fed up messing with the old HH60 and pulled it off my 606. Slapped the Honda G300 on, which I have $0 in, and got everything working! Just have to set up one of the old Tecumseh gas tanks and modify the exhaust so the hood will fit WITHOUT cutting it. Should be a work horse now!

3 pointsWhen your 520 stops charging, you can easily replace the R-R with a new $10.15 Amazon. Then if it still doesn't charge, check the 30A fuse in front of the engine. Or, you can check the fuse first and save $10.15. But then everyone should have a good spare R-R.

3 pointsFor those who are old enough to remember Flip Wilson here is one of his best skits! There were two comedians who had a long running vaudeville routine. One called himself Bad Enough and the other went by the moniker Well Enough. Vaudeville audiences dwindled and the pair fell upon Hard Times (a street not far from “Times” Square). They started squabbling, about money — of course. One thing led to another, punches were thrown, and they finally ended up in court before Judge O. Noyoudont. After they had finished telling their stories the judge laid a small fine on Well Enough, but he threw the proverbial book at Bad Enough: a $1000 fine, 5 nights in jail and probation for a year. Bad Enough couldn’t understand, so he asked the judge for an explanation of why he had received what he considered a harsh sentence. The judge was surprised by his question, shook his head a few times to clear his head, then looked down at him and explained, “I’m trying to get you to learn to leave Well Enough alone.” Lesson learned, Howard; leave well enough alone.

3 pointsI'm thinking since we don't know when enuff is enough you should continue to test the limits until we know how much enuff is. Then we will subtract just enuff to make enuff enough. Good enough?
-
3 pointsI would leave your existing set up the way it is or add a bigger machine to your collection

3 pointsI am running my C-105 without weights this year and through two 6" - 9" snow falls it has been fine with just chains. Last year I had a 100 lbs stack on the back. Truth be told - no difference noted by me (and for the record I have LOST 15 lbs since last year)...My son does numerous neighbor drives and weighs 50 lbs less than me and he has had no issues as well. Keep in mind...Bigger blade = more resistance = more potential for spinning tires.
-
3 pointsAll of the above Howie ......and you will never see snow again. It worked for me.
-
3 points#16.........plain as day,,,,,,,,,,,Terry,,,.......you printed them and all I had to do is stop by.....Please forgive me,,,,,I will be there.........well not with bells on......But I will be there Howard the forgetful857 Horse

3 points12-27-1969 Diana Ross and the Supremes hit #1 with “Someday We’ll Be Together” "Someday We'll Be Together" was the last of twelve American number-one pop singles for Diana Ross & the Supremes on the Motown label. Although it was released as the final Supremes song featuring Diana Ross, who left the group for a solo career in January 1970, it was recorded as Ross' first solo single and Supremes members Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong do not sing on the recording. Both appear on the B-side, "He's My Sunny Boy." The single topped the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart for one week. Reaching number-one on the American pop chart in the final 1969 issue of Billboard magazine (dated December 27), the single was not only the final number-one in 12 chart-topping pop hits for The Supremes, but it also holds the distinction of being the final American number-one hit of the 1960s The song was written by Johnny Bristol, Jackey Beavers, and Harvey Fuqua in 1961; and Bristol and Beavers recorded the song together as "Johnny & Jackey" for the Tri-Phi label that same year. "Someday" was a moderate success in the Midwestern United States, but gained little notice in other venues. Tri-Phi was purchased by Motown in the mid-1960s. Fuqua, Bristol, and Beavers all joined Berry Gordy's by-then famous record company, and "Someday We'll Be Together" became part of Motown's Jobete publishing catalog. Beavers soon departed for Chess Records, although both Bristol and Fuqua stayed on as songwriters and producers for the label. In 1969, Bristol was preparing a cover version of "Someday We'll Be Together," to be recorded by Motown act Jr. Walker & the All-Stars. Bristol had already recorded the instrumental track and the background vocals by Maxine Waters and Julia Waters when Berry Gordy happened upon the tracks and heard them. Gordy thought that "Someday" would be a perfect single for Diana Ross

3 pointsHere is the rare late 50's early 60's weight box that fits that bracket. It works great. The only flaw is the longer you use the tractor, the lighter the box gets. Go figure.
-
3 pointsThey are 6 lug Chevy brake rotors. Miraculously they bolt on with the factory holes on the rims. Zero drilling required and they were FREE!! I'll snap a pic for you tomorrow Ed!
-
3 pointsStill going through the Charger one bit at a time. Today I installed the new choke and throttle cables, and went through the dash electrics. What do you know, the cigarette lighter socket does work after all! I have never seen a tractor with one of these before.
-
2 pointsI've been busy in my spare time working on this hitch idea. I bought an unfinished sleeve hitch from Wheelhorseman1000 (btw, Lowell makes a great product and sells them too cheap). The cylinder is a factory Horse deck lift cylinder. I'm waiting for my o-ring kits to rebuild and stack two more spool valves (total of three valves). Then after I build some hoses, I'm all set. This has been an enjoyable project. Mark.

2 pointsI enjoyed my wheel horse brand tires when I had them on my 876. They may have been a little cracked on the side walls, but they held air for the 2 years I had it. If I had to pick a tractor with them vs a tractor without them, I would pick the ones with the Wheel Horse tires. i'm not much of a resto guy. I prefer a mechanicaly restored but original paint unit. The WH tires go with that look. I only use mine for mowing or driving around the yard. I don't have to deal with the -10 tempratures Sylvan was talking about. And to answer your question, I probably wouldn't pay much more for original WH tires, but I would prefer them (if they were in working shape).

2 pointsOK....you guys reminded me...I forgot,,,i have turfs and chains....no cleats....I'm not saying I had nite mares....but with a good wind if Eds machine ever blew over,,,,,i wouldnt have a chance...that is one STACKED machine......show um Ed.. lololo
-
2 pointsHave wheel weights, seldom used. 48" plow, turf tires, chains. Never a problem.
-
2 pointsFrom past experience, I filled tires with calcium chloride and wheels rotted off the tractor! If you prefer loaded tires you will still need chains or bar-cleats. I always preferred bar-cleats, especially when I had my loader.
-
2 pointsAnother problem you'll have if you try to save them, they may destroyed in the process of removal. The surface of the rubber may look good but the rubber is very brittle on these 30-40 year old tires. If your working the tractor your best is to replace them.
-
2 pointsI hear ya Jeff. The sad news is, I have replaced that fuse before with one leg eaten off. Me thinks it is time to invest in a new fuse holder.
-
2 pointsThanks @Mastiffman, but it is charging now that I replaced the bad fuse. I had checked the stator voltage and had 26.5VAC at 3KRPM, but only had 11VDC out of the R-R center lug. All is well. The moral of this post.....If it doesn't work, check the fuses first.
-
2 pointsIt never fails to amaze me why a PO would take a bearing out like that and not replace it. There are a ton of instructionals here for the three piece trannys and Steve has been instrumental in most of them & he's got you out on the right foot. @Racinbob has had his share apart in his day as well. If you can get a pic of the axels, we'd like to see how scored they are, The aforementioned Bob has a real easy method to make them just like new....well almost! Here a thread I did on some 'Burban work when I was a rookie and both those guys helped me out, Transmission work starts on post 47. Also take a close look at that 3523 gear those are what usually take a beating ...new one can be had here This is a cheat sheet Steve put together ..you may or may not already have it

2 pointsJim--Sounds like the voice of experience right there! Glad you got those old horses up and running and pushed into service. Looking forward to watching the progress on that Charger especially
-
2 pointsThat pic is going to be saved to my phone and my pic library--there is a certain patina to the whole pic! If it had a different background and the black spot out of the upper left corner, it would be a calendar pic in my book! Thanks for sharing, I think it would make a GREAT horse hauler! I hope you are able to accomplish that someday
-
2 pointsI'm looking forward to taking advantage of this offer. I've heard great things about these products from youtube. Regards, tbirdsteve.
-
2 pointsBeing an electrician, I tend to overdo electrical projects. That said, if you replace any wires, I personally would go up one gauge size on the wires. Completely unnecessary, but it keeps the OCD voices quiet in my head. For your heavy leads (battery and starter cables) determine the lengths you need and have your napa store crimp ring lugs onto #2 welding cable. Mark.

2 pointsWelcome to Red Square a I think 2500-3000 would be fair. A supplier I use has a mint one and would take no less than 3000 he says.
