So, today two more horses followed me home. These critters sure are friendly! Somebody should have warned me that they breed like rabbits! Anyways, the first is a B80 with the 8 speed and a 16hp Kohler. The metal is straight and it runs strong. It does need a governor adjustment and the voltage rectifier needs to be hooked up. The tires look ok, but they are very hard and are starting to crack. The second is a Charger 10 with hydro trans, an 8hp Kohler that smokes a little, and duallies. This tractor needs a new voltage rectifier, one new rear tire, and an engine rebuild or new engine. These tractors came as a package deal with a bunch of parts, including a couple mule drives, a 30-some inch universal snow plow, and a 38" triple blade rear discharge deck. $400 took it all home. How do you think I did?

So this new to me cab reared up and bit me a little......the zipper on the left side that you have to reach thru to turn the chute did a little abrasive work on my arm. Lesson learned button down yer sleeve or wear gauntlet style gloves! Have had worst injuries via the rolling pin but still could have been avoided. Was so nice & cozy in ther no jacket! Plan to extend it into the cab but a 2 stage is in the future. Excuse me right side...

Here is my snow team! Got my 97 520 to the left. My 93 520 in the middle and to the right is my back up 92 520. Just need chains on my dual stage and I'm all set! Just need snow now!

I cleaned up both 60in. decks and stored them till spring, come on spring. I always clean up the underside of all my deck and spray them with fuel oil, usually spray them 3 or 4 time a winter, I also have all my 48 in. deck stored inside the big garage. The one 60 in. that is surface rusted will be cleaned up and painted come spring. Those 60 in. deck that come on the 520's are built like a tank.

Gentlemen, Just stopping by for an introduction and maybe a short story...my name is Brian, married and father to 1 son a mere 18 months old. I'm a 33yo mechanic/electrician and a part time police officer of the small town I reside on the far western, corn-fielded suburbs of Chicago. (unfortunately, haha) Just got into tractors this year but I tend to go full throttle sometimes with newfound hobbies. Got a buddy who has owned a Gravely 430 restored, 2 123 Cubs and now a 125 hes almost done with but has been using. His neighbor has 3 or 4? Pre 70 wheel horses restored so that has helped propel me to my current situation. I bought a simplicity tractor from the 80's with a single stage blower for my fairly good size drive this year. Its too small and I want a 2 stage. With lots of research I narrowed down a few models from 3 brands Cub, Gravely, and Wheel Horse. Here I am, I'm a proud owner of a (not sure of the year, was told 73 but im thinking 76) C-160. I bought a package from a gentleman somewhat close to me and all of the stuff I got is in darn good shape, but I did buy the tractor with some trans issues that ill save for another thread. I already love that horse and ive only had it for a few days. This web site is great, ive only been lurking for a couple weeks but I have learned so much already. Of all the 20+ forums ive joined over the years I can honestly say this one retains the most class. So many google searches have brought me here and ive yet to see any immature nonsensical ramblings or bickering among this group, already feels like home. My goal is to get this tractor in 100% working condition, whether with the trans in it or with a donor trans, work it, restore it and pass it to my son 30-40 years from now. Much to learn, I have, but im willing and eager...its good to be here.

Pick up a rolling frame Commando 8 a long time ago and she has been sitting in the barn until last month. Based on looks I anticipated problems in Tranny land. Opened her up today and looked like new. New case gasket and seals and she is going back together. I had planned on full tear down, press out all the bearings and sand blast the case...not now. Any ideas how to clean up the outside of the case without getting water or sand into the tranny???.

Your asking this Horse crazy group for a recommendation is like asking a Snake Oil salesman if he has something for what ails you Of course since Horses are an ailment here, maybe you are actuallu in the right place. I see a multi layer storage rack in you future.

Here she is in pieces. 175 original hours before the PO lost movement and lift while tilling. Tiller, original snow cab, blower/vac deck and monstrosity of a snow blower. Oh and an extra set of original wheels and (I think) painted original weights. 🤘🏻

The Kohler definitely draws less air than the Daihatsu. Obviously the airflow requirement is less for the air-cooled engine than the water-cooled diesel. But I feel that the airflow for the diesel actually needed in winter should be less as blowing snow requires less horsepower than mowing grass. Interestingly, the Kubota BX uses a similar design drawing air through the cowl screens and pushing air forward exiting through the front grille. Something I found out after the winter season is that Kubota has a plate underneath the tractor by the radiator that can be removed for winter (bad for mowing in the summer) and vinyl covers can be placed over the intake screens. I'm not sure if the Dxi has enough space there as the steering mechanism is right there. Initially I had thought of getting a second left footrest and running a duct through it to the left screen while blocking the other two. But this year I am going to try blocking the two side screens to see if that helps and still have enough air to cool the engine. Reminds me of my old days with air-cooled VWs to get heat in the winter! Now I started thinking about getting a two-stage snowblower again!

Whew, clicking on that title was kind of like a car wreck, you just have to look but i was glad not to see your plumber crack posted in here Jim. You can add an electric chute control motor to those single stages. 2 large washers and a short piece of pipe will make the drum and weld it all to a piece of rod. Connect a motor to it and save all the original hand crank pieces so it can easily be swapped back.

We'll guys, I got out and removed the snow we just received from last night and this morning. There was about 8" overall and it was nearly perfect conditions for blowing. Air temperature was about 30 degrees and the snow was like powder since it was fairly cold when the bulk of it fell. The downside was that i obviously still don't have a cab and I tried to blow with the wind as much as possible but sometimes I didnt have a choice and my body got hammered with snow. I can honestly tell you that the Diesel motor handles that blower with ease. In the video you'll notice that much of the time I'm blowing at about 4mph. When the snow is deeper or wetter, then I have to go slower. I wish I knew how to add some dramatic soundtrack music to this video and it would really be sweet. I'm definitely an "xi" fan!!! Caleb did the video action for me and I thank him for that!

That beasty 16 HP lump in the b-80 is a big deal. That is what makes your purchase a nice pick. On the other engine.....I found out that it is best to run an engine for a while before thinking they need a re-build. My raider 10 smoked a bit and used oil at first, but penetrating oil in the spark plug hole and changing the oil to a modern Diesel oil helped a bunch as it no longer smokes or uses oil. It is possible that a ring might stick to one side of the groove in the piston causing oil consumption on a tractor that sat for a while. It looks like the 8HP engine has no starter solenoid. It would not be a bad idea to spray the switch with some penetrating oil and clean the contacts because all that power is going through the switch to start the tractor. It also appears that the spark coil is living beneath the flywheel. If yours gives you trouble, parts are unobtanium---but you can convert it to the standard 'beer can ' coil ignition system as your tractor has points. Been there done that on an electro 12

I have finally gotten my 518xi ready for this season and it sounds like I might use it next weekend. It is the same tractor in the 2017 calendar for December. This year I have the pleasure of a cab on this one as well. The 523Dxi with the snowthrower and cab is next. Last year there wasn't any snow until January so I was caught off guard thinking there wouldn't be any snow for the year. The diesel was never setup! This one took a while as it has a new/old cab that I bought from a RS member. All the frame pieces were primed and painted. I replaced the original hardware with stainless steel bolts and nylock nuts. One thing I noticed right away is that the Kohler moves a lot less air inside the cab than the Daihatsu diesel. Another modification may be an actuator for sectoring the plow.

Good Snowy morning! Lurking newbie to the forum. I know Redpaul does not seem very original for a moniker but I come by it honestly. I live in Redford Michigan, I drive a Red Ford Pick-up, I went to college at the University of Nebraska (Go Big Red), and most important I have 3 red horses. Also you may have guessed that my favorite color is red. You're wrong its purple, but I'm not perfect. I proudly own and spend happy seat time on an Onan powered 416 with a 48" SD deck. The sound of this tractor almost brings me the same response as the sound of my '69 Firebird 400 did back in 1983 BM (Before Marriage). I also have a plow blade which is going to work on the first few inches of snow in about an hour. I own, and hide under a tarp, a complete but trashed C101 with an RD deck, and a 12-38 XL with a frozen engine. I am going to rebuild the 12-38 for my grandson and grand daughters. By the time it's done they will be old enough to drive it. The C101 is for my wife so she could help mow and maintain 1.75 acres of grass and trees (Yeah right!) She said I can keep the old "lawn mowers" for myself. She is another work in process. I have very much enjoyed the information that is offered here. I know as I get into my project horses I can count on expert help and I hope I can start adding insight for others with the same developing or well developed addiction. I will post pictures but I am having problems rounding up the herd into one spot. I have a Catahoula Cur (AKA Catahoula Leopard Dog) which is a breed used for herding hogs. I guess that hogs are all they will herd as he is scared to death of my horses and no help at all. Now to my first question: Has anyone had any luck straightening out the ribbed section of a 400 series hood? Previous owner like to get drunk and show off his expensive toy, however; do to severe whiskey-vision he had a tendency to run into trees, bushes, his deck... pretty much anything that couldn't run away. (According to his ex wife who sold me the machine) Question #2: I need an idea for a cup holder for the 416. Obviously WH did not ask for guidance from the Doge Van guys (9 cup holders +) when figuring out the operator ergonomic niceties. I need a place for a cold adult beverage in the summer and an Irish coffee in the winter. Oh wait ..... whiskey vision, white out conditions, mailbox post....

Well i got my 6 horses all nice and toasty warm in the garage, and there all getting along just fine. I even can park my truck in there with them. Now my conundrum is do i park the truck outside and if i see or have a horse trying to follow me home do i take it,or keep the space for the truck.Geez i hate to pass on a horse!! Anyone want to throw in their 2 cents?

I know I know....problem is I didn't want to get too involved with this single as I have got the two stage waiten in the wings... then it's gonna be power everything....by the way no pic...thank God... but after the Packers game I did make a clean up round in my skivies....wife threw up her hands and went to bed!!! Man these cabs are comfy....minus the zippers of course!

Hey Jim, Extend that chute crank back into that nice warm cab and you can keep your zipper closed. May as well install a chute deflector inside the cab while you are at it.

Jeff--those are some interesting and thoughtful modifications, I'm especially intrigued by the rubber paddle extensions. This thing already tosses snow about 35-40' but if it could be improved, I'm all for that . Regarding the cab situation, I could see why the diesel would cause a significant draft. In the summer it is great to have that air drawn away, but this time of year, a little engine heat would feel good. I'd love to get my hands on a cab like this from an X series JD... based on the shape and profile, I think one of these could be adapted to the WH. Paint the roof red or silver and no one is the wiser. The most difficult part would be making sure that the area around the hood would fit or could be filled in to fit.

Not me Jeff.....I use real butter. It also works well on the boat trailer bunks.

Jack, quit teasing me , all joking aside, that diesel sounds wicked cool awesome snowblowing vid on that Dxi ,hopefully soon I hear the same , but as John @shallowwatersailor says that radiator cooling fan draws a lot of air out of the cab vs the gas powered ones or the classics, so as far as being warmer in a cab he'll have to chime in but yes at least you wouldn't be a riding snowman from all the blow back, and as a tip or 2 to maximize that "chucking" distance 1) I added the rubber paddles to the impeller fan to close up the gap in the drum and 2) I added a solid "stone deflector" in the lower portion of the discharge chute just my that it actually helps considerably ,Jeff.

12-11-1919 Boll Weevil monument dedicated The Boll Weevil Monument in downtown Enterprise, Alabama, United States is a prominent landmark and tribute erected by the citizens of Enterprise in 1919 to show their appreciation to an insect, the boll weevil, for its profound influence on the area's agriculture and economy. Hailing the beetle as a "herald of prosperity," it stands as the world's first monument built to honor an agricultural pest The boll weevil (Anthonomus grandis) was indigenous to Mexico, but appeared in Alabama in 1915. By 1918 farmers were losing whole cotton crops to the beetle. H. M. Sessions saw this as an opportunity to convert the area to peanut farming. In 1916 he convinced C. W. Baston, an indebted farmer, to back his venture. The first crop paid off their debts and was bought by farmers seeking to change to peanut farming. Cotton was grown again, but farmers learned to diversify their crops, a practice which brought new money to Coffee County. Bon Fleming, a local businessman, came up with the idea to build the monument, and helped to finance the cost. As a tribute to how something disastrous can be a catalyst for change, and a reminder of how the people of Enterprise adjusted in the face of adversity, the monument was dedicated on December 11, 1919 at the intersection of College and Main Street, the heart of the town's business district. The monument depicts a female figure in a flowing gown with arms stretched above her head. She raises high a trophy topped by an enlarged-scale boll weevil. The statue stands atop an ornately detailed base which supports two round streetlamps. The base stands in the center of a fountain, which is surrounded by a wrought-iron railing. The monument stands more than 13 feet tall. At the base of the monument appears the following inscription: "In profound appreciation of the Boll Weevil and what it has done as the herald of prosperity this monument was erected by the citizens of Enterprise, Coffee County, Alabama."

Indiana Bicentennial December 11, 1816 - December 11, 2016 President James Madison approved Indiana's admission into the union as the nineteenth state on December 11, 1816. Indiana is the 38th largest by area and the 16th most populous of the 50 United States. Its capital and largest city is Indianapolis. Indiana is divided into 92 counties. As of 2010, the state includes 16 metropolitan and 25 micropolitan statistical areas, 117 incorporated cities, 450 towns, and several other smaller divisions and statistical areas. Hoosier History Highlights: http://www.in.gov/ibc/2614.htm Happy Birthday, INDIANA! The Home of Wheel Horse Tractors! The Indiana State Flag was designed by Paul Hadley of Mooresville, Indiana. In 1914, the Indiana Daughters of the American Revolution offered a prize of $100 to the person who could design a state banner. Paul Hadley's design was accepted and submitted to the General Assembly of 1917 for official adoption. The addition of the word INDIANA was the only change made by the General Assembly. The torch stands for liberty and enlightenment and the rays show their far-reaching influence. The thirteen original states are represented by the outer circle of thirteen stars. Nice haul & welcome C-160's are great tractors, they will do everything imaginable. Good luck with the transmission. As you;ve already probable read, a transmission oil change with the correct filter is a good place to start. When you change the oil jack the front of the tractor up to drain it well. Also remember what seems like transmission problems could be a loose wheel hub , a weak belt idler spring, or even a loose drive pulley.

May want to consider a much smaller lamp on the sides to light up the area next to the tractor . I've learned that having very bright forward/back lighting against new snow makes it tough to see along side the tractor and avoiding objects . Look into the small round 1 watt led round lamps - they are cheap and effective , I use 3 in the rear of the old Land Cruiser FJ40 for dome lamps . https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/led-wired-bolts/bolt-beam-12mm-led-light/1494/#/tab/Specifications These are brighter than you'd think - https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/led-light-modules/small-wired-led-accent-light/1141/#/tab/Reviews Sarge

Hello Brian and The C 160 is my favorite model . I don't have one but still my favorite. Looks like you got some nice equipment there. Some TLC and you'll be is business. Those old tractors are really tough. I hope you can get your trans problem fixed without having to swap it out. There are several trans repair videos on here but like someone stated earlier it might be something pretty simple. I sure hope so.
