Well she is done ready for winter. Thanks to Bob aka rmaynard, Told me about the mid high seat from Northern Tool nice seat for the $$$$ found some seat springs on E->>> Now I sit above the steering wheel. Also went to Home Depot to get some safety walk tread for stairs. Fits nice on the running boards also it is reflective. So now just waiting for that W or S word. enjoy the picks.

To any members in the Chicago area, there is a add on Chicago Craigslist for 2 1958 RJ 58s for 1500. Well they are both 60 suburbans and not RJs. The seller claims one is complete and the other is missing a carb only. Also incorrect, they both are missing many parts. He knows they are not RJs and it seems he is waiting for some poor soul that isn't familiar with RJs to take advantage of. I know we are all into different years and models and I just wanted to get it out there so no one here that is not familiar with the RJ model gets taken advantage of. Hopefully this thread is ok and in the right place.

Two years of Wheel Horse fun ... chasing parts ... chasing horses ... obsessively checking CL for implements ... watching YouTube video's ... The, day, has, arrived. Presenting, (drum roll please) my first furrow. I now own a garden tractor instead of a garden lawn mower. Don't laugh! Practice will make perfect one day!

The C160 is a great machine I have 2 one I refixed I don't like to say I restored because I think of restored as like new condition. I use mine only for pushing stuff like dirt and snow. And I also run synthetic in the trans and didn't have any problems with the sundstrand trans last year with a slow lift. I couldn't tell any difference summer or winter.if you want to really fix them up it is a lot of work but you will have a wonderful machine. C160 is my favorite tractor. Here is a before and after

Didn't get a great deal done today, but had a great conversation with @stevasaurus and got the transmission cleaned up and ready tp reassemble once the seals and gasket are delivered (Thursday, so they say). The inside of the transmission is pretty clean after a scrub down of diesel with a wire brush and elbow grease. Had a little time left so I cleaned up the block and got it painted. Since I have the block painted, I will probably jump in and blast the cover and tins and get that portion finished and ready to reinstall before attacking the next item, which will probably be the frame, or hood, or fender.....Depends on which the way the wind blows.

Finished making the new belt guard I needed for my 1958 Wheel Horse RJ I restored! The guard normally used on this would not mount correctly as I needed a belt guid to assist the clutching on this tractor. The belt guide needed to mount in the Kohler motor threaded hole that the right side bolt for the RJ belt guard! So I used perforated plate to make a belt guard that would protect your right leg from getting into the idler pulley and Drive belt. Came out pretty good and the one inch hole spacing on the perforated sheet metal matched up perfectly with the wheel horse holes. The belt guide did not work correctly on the bottom of the motor (first picture) so I had to use the top left hole on the motor for the guide .

Far bigger things to worry about in life than some guy mislabeling something he's selling.
  9. 4 points
Why are you guys so bent out of shape on this? People mis-list model numbers all the time. Maybe he/she really thinks they are RJ-58s because that's what whoever sold or gave them to him/her said, and they're far more likely to believe their source than someone who randomly emails them.1958 RJ...1960 Suburban... not a big difference in appearances or value... and even less to the untrained eye. Would you be jumping all over them if they had listed a pair of Nineteen eighty whatever 211-4 tractors but they really had 257-H's? Or Commando 6s instead of Commando 8s? I know if I had something for sale on CL and someone emailed me to "FYI" or correct me... their email would go straight to the top of the who gives a crap list. Of course I would take the trouble to research what I actually had before trying to sell it.

I restored my C-121 and enjoyed the process. Wheel Horse made a good product and of the dozen of so tractors I have work on WH is the best. Post lots of pics. Here is one of mine after I finished

Well after finishing the 1056 I wasn't sure how long it would take to dive into another. A C-160 followed me home from Springfield, Mo and it doesnt look much like ti did on Thursday. Got it on the lift ready to start the tear down process. This is what's left of it on the lift after 8 hours or so. Posted over to the Transmission page about some issues and have the parts coming. I cannot get the exhaust fitting out of the block. I will keep slathering PB on it and see if it will break loose. This one is for my daughter and son-in-law and he has agreed to come assist....Maybe this will go a bit quicker! Had considered restoring the 3 piece seat, but after reading on here that they are less than comfortable, I will forego that. SIL is 6'4 and around 250, so an adjustable thick seat will be best for him. Once finished, I may restore the 3 piece seat anyway.....The logo in the center of the backrest is still in good shape and could be stitched into another pad. The engine is strong. I am hoping I don't have to crack open the trans, but as you can see an oil seal on the input shaft is a must, as is replacing the woodruff key on the pulley. A solid 10 ounces of water came out of the trans before the oil did. New shifter boot ordered... I don't think I am going to attempt pulling the steering wheel. It looks to be more rusted up than the 1056 did and I broke a gear puller trying to get it off. I will mask the wheel and repaint the shaft and upper console that way.... More to follow as this build progresses.

OK guys, we share all our love and pics for the RJ's, the Suburban"s, the 701's, the 953's, the C160's, the 520's, and occasionally a Blackhood........ But what about the 414's? It's like they don't even exist! Am I the only Red Square member who has a 414 in the barn? LOL Tell me it ain't so, and show us your 414 Tonight the 414-8 is getting an oil change. I have no idea how many hours are on this one because they do not have hour meters. What was up with that?!

As I originally stated, I'm not trying to jump on the guy for misslabeling, I was warning fellow members THAT DONT KNOW THE RJ MODEL WELL to be aware that they are suburbans in case they believe they are really rjs and respond to the add to try to purchase them. I'm trying to lookout for our fellow members that's all, I can give a rats tail about him or the add. And the guy does know they are suburbans because I asked him "how much for the suburbans" and he said to make a offer so it's not accidental mislabeling, it's ignorance.

First off FatJack Carb rebuild kits are available in many places including some auto parts stores and most small engine shops that might have a Kohler shingle hanging outside. Kits will come with everything you need to rebuild the type you are working on. The manual might have the Kohler kit P/N you can Google to find other sources and make sure you get the right one. My choice is usually just because I don't live close to any of those places but I do live close to my mailbox! As Dan mentioned above the cheap knock off Chinese carbs can be had for a pittance if desired and the guys here say they work good. If by chance it's a Walbro most of us here prefer to go the Chinese route. I would recommend this https://www.berrymanproducts.com/products/eco-friendly-products/berryman-chem-dip-carburetor-and-parts-cleaner/ for soaking the disassembled carb in. You just get off the boat or one of them logs roll over ya MWR?? Just search fleabay for Kohler carbs and you will have them coming out of the woodwork!!

Thanks guys! My new to me Classic GT/314-8 performed the pulling. Without a complaint at 1400 hours on the clock. It's a keeper! Florida is an ancient sand bar. Fossilized shark teeth are commonly found in fresh water springs in the middle of the state. Yes, that really is beach sand that has been turned over under the pasture bahiagrass. No rocks here! July, August and September are our "stay inside" months. How people lived in Florida before air conditioning is beyond me. It is just starting to cool down enough to work outside and get some beds ready for an early January planting. We never had a frost day last year, so the timing seems like a safe bet. I also scored a Brinly CC 500 row crop cultivator with the plow.

Well after a nice long conversation with @stevasaurus we fixed many of the problems of the world and even discussed transmissions. While he encouraged me to dismantle the entire unit, I decided I had come far enough in this wanderlust. Me a wire brush and a turkey baster spent some quality time and I do believe the transmission (on the inside) is shining like a diamond in a goats rear. Now if the man in the little brown truck will bring me all my gaskets and seals, I can button this up and go to work on the case. I have to admit, it's kind of neat to be talking to a guy as knowledgeable as @stevasaurus while you are looking at the transmission and he is not and he describes how everything works and what gear was which and even which gear I was in. He described how to shift it to neutral, without the benefit of a stick......Pretty cool, and much appreciated. Once I get this thing buttoned up, I will close this out. The restoration thread can be found here:

Glad you are looking out for the fellow members who may not know better...I know there are several out there who could make this mistake (myself possibly included, as I'm still soaking up any information I can) who might buy these based on what the owner is stating that they are, only to be disappointed later on down the line. This is one of the many reasons I love RedSquare...members looking out for fellow members I know myself wanting an RJ but not knowing much about them would be extremely upset if I bought these, only to find they weren't what I was told they were

IMO, at under $7.00 a can at Walmart, considering all the potential effort and hassle by getting much more physically and financially involved, what do you have to lose running a tank full of fresh fuel with Seafoam or some other reputable carb cleaner through the system??? Not much, I'd say.

Cadmandu! You and I are starting to bond! I love your spreadsheet approach! And man have you come to the right place to learn about WHs! I was born in Cincy and obviously she hosts some very intensive WH knowledge in Brandon! You got to really struggle to get that kind of info on your own! Not even Google can do that good! When you finish your fact finding project, would you honor us with a completed, spell checked, fact checked version of your spreadsheet, please? Perhaps include some reference to this forum and it's members? I reread Brandon's reply and Man! There's a lot of good info in there! Brandon! Are Wheel Horses even allowed in Cincy now days?) The C-195's were all Eaton 1100. Seems to imply that the 1100 was top notch... The early 1980 C automatics (blackhoods) were sundstrand, late 1980 up to 1984 were Eatons. Seems to imply that the 1100 was top notch... There is no 520A, only 520H So all 520s had hydraulic lifts? 516H and 518H were eaton 700's Any thoughts as to why? Only the top dog of the 5XXs, the 520 got the 1100? Didn't know that! All the A's were usually eaton 700's except the 417A and 418A (and there are a select few of the 300 series A models that made it out as 1100's too but no definitive on that) I think the Ponds lost track of some things that "WE" very seriously track! What were the 417-418As? 1100s? Gads! How does one keep track? Cadmandu! You listening? That spreadsheet? Many sundstrands had lifts, many did not I don't know if there is a differentiating factor that determined which had which. ALL Eaton 700's had manual lift, MOST eaton 1100's had hydro lift (but there are examples of some 1100's having manual lift) More inconsistencies with the Ponds/Wheel Horses! Can you elaborate which 1100s had manual lift? Sure makes it confusing! Sure makes it interesting! Thank you Brandon for sharing!

Have you tried Seafoam for your fuel system? A shot of Seafoam carburetor cleaner into the air intake several times and adding the liquid to the gas has done a wonderful job for lots of us. Here is some light reading for you. Carburator Reference Manual TP-2377-E.pdf Carburator adjustments.docx

Ah...good old sandy dirt, that explains why some of rolls flipped back over into the furrow. Also the roots of the grass have a tendency to pull it back in. Try running in 2nd gear and going faster to get a better roll, your 314 will have no problem with that. Traction might be an issue tho, ags & weights are a must. It is an art form to setting up the plow correctly as well. Brinly's got some good read on it but one of these days the plow master himself @PeacemakerJack should do an instructionall on setting one up!

I found I like some #40 chain around the front tires for steering too, just one length running down the middle. it helped immensely with a snowblower, haven't tried it with a plow yet, but I'm thinking it will do the same.

just lose the riser plate for the Tecumseh and change the belt guard to one from a Kohler 7/8 Hp tractor (ie...704 855 Commando 8 etc) You'll also have to change the ignition switch if you go with an electric start model.

You guys flatter me...thank you. Todd, it was excellent talking with you yesterday. I called that machine shop, and I think I have found the right place to take my 8shp Kohler. I asked the guy what time they opened so I could take the engine down to him this morning. He says they open at 8 but they really just lolly around for an hour while they have their coffee. I asked, you guys have coffee their? He says "yes". I asked if they had something to put in it...like Kahlu'a, and he says "yes". I tell him I am liking you guys already. So I am going to load up and go see them...the price is good also. Todd, I hope we talk again when you get into that other transmission. Have a nice day, and I hope you parts show up. GO CUBBIES

Guys, I finally was fortunate enough to meet and spend time with19Richie66. He is an all around terrific guy and I encourage everyone here to introduce yourselves to him at the Big Show next year if you have not already met him. Richie is hoping to attend his first Big Show, and I sure hope he can make it happen. We did some horse trading and with the help of Richie's Son, hauled stuff off of Richie's trailer and into my shop and Wheel Horse rolling chassis storage building. Then hauled stuff out of my storage building and Wheel Horse Barn and into his trailer. Richie ended up with a complete rear end and hydro pump and tach and vacuum gauge from a 520H roller I had. Also my old 417Hydro rolling chassis that was in the storage building, and the KT17 series 2 engine that was being stored in the Wheel Horse barn. And maybe some other stuff that I can't remember at this time. I happily ended up with a 1989 312-8 that has a fine running Magnum 12. The tractor needs a fender pan, seat, clutch return spring, and some TLC to be a usable working tractor. Buts that's no problem as I should have everything needed right here in stock. The tractor came with a set of Firestone AG's which I've already removed to put on John Robert (my K powered 416-8). The bonus to this 312-8 is it has a stack exhaust complete with a rain cap. Next cool thing I got from Richie was a complete running 10hp K engine mounted on a shaker plate. This engine has a little stack muffler with a rain cap that I may put on the 701. That should make it look even more like a miniature farm tractor. I have a Blackhood roller that needs a shaker plate engine. Then a complete but at the present time nonworking 8 speed transmission that can be repaired or used for parts. We had to part company much too soon, but Richie had to get back home to Florida. Here is a few pics of the things I ended up with.

Hello. I recently aquired this Wheel Horse 800 3 speed. Previous owner told me it was a Commando 800. But I'm unsure of it. Can any of you verify that? It has a MAG1026 SRL X188 engine that's not running when warm. (Do you have any suggestions to what the problem might be?) I'm also looking for the tool coupling thing (The piece to put on the back to hook up the plow)

Thank you all. Today it lasted half an hour without choking itself. Had som troubles mid-session with pushing dirt, but worked fine after that. I recently changed the oil and plug. It had been sitting still for 2 years before I got it. Maybe it just needs a "run-in" ? Here are a few extra pictures. Hope they help.

Found some ag tires and rims at a old gas tractor show. I blasted and painted the rims and mounted them on this little guy. I kinda like the look. I'm gonna need a new place to house it though because she will no longer fit through the shed door.

There should be a tag riveted to the tower just below the steering wheel that will have a model number on it. Being a European the numbers may differ from those in the US, but we also have many great Euro members with lots of information to share. There are a couple of plow attachment hitches; the slot hitch is the most common; probably best to buy the plow first the post a "Wanted" ad on here for the hitch. The issue you are having with not running well when hot could be ignition or fuel related. Begin by rebuilding the carburetor and making sure the fuel system is clean and has fresh gas in it.

10-26-1984 Infant receives baboon heart At Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, California, Dr. Leonard L. Bailey performs the first baboon-to-human heart transplant, replacing a 14-day-old infant girl’s defective heart with the healthy, walnut-sized heart of a young baboon. The infant, known as “Baby Fae,” was born with hypoplastic left-heart syndrome, a deformity that is almost fatal and is found in newborns in which parts or all of the left side of the heart is missing. A few days after Baby Fae’s birth, Loma Linda heart surgeon Dr. Bailey convinced Baby Fae’s mother to allow him to try the experimental baboon-heart transplant. Three other humans had received animal-heart transplants, the last in 1977, but none survived longer than 3 1/2 days. Bailey argued that an infant with an underdeveloped immune system would be less likely to reject alien tissue than an adult. Baby Fae survived the operation, and her subsequent struggle for life received international attention. After living longer than any other human recipient of an animal heart, Baby Fae’s body made a concerted effort to reject the alien transplant. Doctors were forced to increase dosages of an immuno-suppressive drug, leading to kidney failure. Ultimately, doctors were defeated by the swift onset of heart failure, and on November 15 Baby Fae died after holding on for 20 days.

I made a bit more progress today. My first problem was that the shroud on the EFI engine was not setup for the spinning screen and flywheel driveshaft on the xi. I was able to order a shroud from an Exmark that still had the oil cooler cutout along with the proper front screen. As a bonus it also had the clean out plate kit already cut and included! My second issue was that the holes I needed on the PTO end of the engine were not tapped, but they were pre-drilled. I was able to drill and tap them to get the PTO stop plate and the lower heat shield mounted. I had to trim the lower heat sheild to fit around the ignition modules and the engine mounted fuses. The muffler I think is a bit lower than the stock toro muffler, but it seems like it will do OK. Here's the stock spacer that is stuck in the end of the Electric PTO, but since my shaft is longer I will have to have the "shaft portion" of the spacer milled off and recessed a little bit to hold the clutch tight. I have to get the oil drain pipe and oil temp sensor installed and then I think I am ready to drop it in! I do have a bit of a wiring adapter to make up but I am hoping that wont be a big deal. I also got another fun delivery for my project: Good to know that Miller ships them boxed up now, so no tweaked tires to relax before mounting!

It works!!!! After a month plus of planning and prep, tonight I was able to actually test the Grizzly! I need some more weight as I was lacking for traction but the power with that twin Vanguard was impressive and I was pleasantly surprised with how well the hydro worked (since I'm a dyed in the wool GD guy when it comes to plowing). I had one leak on a fitting that I hadn't tightened like I should've (it's tight now) and I still need a different fitting for one of the hoses that heads to the ram so that I can reroute that line and put the tunnel cover on. It's a sharp little tractor and I think Caleb will really enjoy his seat time on it! More updates following Bluniers plow day!

Yes Sir, it's a big plus to have extra oarts. My Dad taught me a long time ago that " Its better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it" One of the things I look forward to at the Big Show is visiting Dale's Wheel Horse booth area and buying all the maintenance items I will need for the following year. I always have a list of things such as belts, mower blades, air filters, ignition switches, tie rods, pto disc, headlight trim inserts for 300/400 series, fuel tank caps with the gauge, battery trays and hold down brackets. I enjoy being able to get something I need off the shelf when working on one of my tractors. This saves a lot of time in the short run and long run. Jack, funny you said that. Richie and I both felt like we came away with stuff that we needed, and was fun to wrench on. It don't get any better than that when Horse trading

Weather was great last weekend. I got in a little plowing in the garden with the 854, and got the mower deck off the C-160 and it ready to plow. Plan to be at Blunier's with both, plus my son's B-100, and also my Bronco 12 just for show. Hopefully we don't get too much rain tonight and tomorrow. Otherwise, looks like pretty good weather for plowing. Dave

Fuses are a good thing, lots of older didn't have them and should have. Presuming you have a battery ignition system with points and a coil the following simple diagram should be helpful. The wire sizes are not Gospel, if you want to use a larger size (smaller number wire gauge) that is fine. The second and third are for reference for other systems.

Thanks ACman, I'm glad to have helped get you started into a great hobby. My shop also serves as my hideout, my get away. I get a lot of satisfaction out of being able to do so many different things right here at home. It's also pretty amazing what a guy can teach himself to do with the right tools at hand. Maybe I will posts in the new thread one day with a few pics of the shop.

Sundstrands all very durable and garden tractor manufacturers started using them over 50 years ago. Most are still in original condition. They are very strong units. The Magnums were starting to be phased out in the late 80s and early 90s. Most manufacturers have already started using the Kohler Command by that time. Toro was a bit behind in putting the Commands in their tractors. Nothing wrong with either the Magnum or the Command as both are Kohler's commercial grade engines. Onan is also a commercial grade engine and are built to last. Parts, though are a bit pricey.

That was good advice! It wasn't pretty but it worked. Had to use sawzall to cut a slot and it cam on out with some force. Was able to get the nipple in Almost a half inch Thanks for the tip! The remains are on top of the head. I have a companion thread over in the transmission forum regarding my adventure with it...

1980-1984 C-165 Automatic and C-145 Automatic are the only tractors that fit those specific requirements. However, if you are willing to look at the Kohler Magnums which were essentially the same as a K series but had a magneto ignition. That opens up your scope to include 1990 and newer 312-H and 314-H but some feel these engines are a BIT under powered running a Hydro with a big mower deck or snow blower. Also there are koher twins if you dont want to go Onan, like the C-175 Auto, 417-A, 418-A, 418-C. But in reality, the Onans are just fine for many people (and lots of people LOVE them!) They sound really cool, are VERY smooth running and have quite a bit of power. That will expand your search to all the newer 416-H's and 520-H's as well (of which there are very many of these around!) I don't know if you have a specific reason to be going hydro, but most attachments are not unreasonable to use a hand-lift with (and some are even preferred, like mid-mount grader blade). The 8 speeds are just about bullet proof and for ground engaging work cant be beat. The hydros are smoother for cutting grass and (for me) plowing snow especially when converted to foot pedal control. That will expand your search immensely!
