OK....here it goes....I found this coming out of a pickup at the dump....The man would not explain it.....take it or leave it !!! I did not even know it was a garden tractor....Much less a Wheel Horse...the rear was a mess,,,,,found one that looked like it....another mess.......So,,i found a rear from something called a 310-8 drove to Pa,,,,,meet a man named Bill Jenkins,,,,sold me a rear and i left....(( Never got to see behind the curtains))...Made a bracket to mate the rear to the existing frame...nothing is welded....it will all come apart...I found a hood on Ebay,,,the hood has never been painted or mounted,,,It was a NOS dealer hood...It is as shinney as the new paint on the rest of the tractor ,,from a guy Dave Mitton... And the engine ??? I still did not know what a Kohler was,,,,,,But I had a sidewalk edger with a running engine,,,the one you see..a 2 1/2 horse Briggs......So i mounted it The front wheels are old troy bilt split rim wheels...with 7 inch tires....Road Apples caught those and said Hi at the Big Show...,,I had to put 2 inch thick ford wheel spacers on so the 23x10.50x12 would fit between the rear fenders that are mounted on a tool box,if you notice,,,the tool box is mounted backwards..... with good reason......My seat dont hit my fenders....i have no machine shop...So the crude cave man wizardry on the linkage is my undoing.... After all that,,,,,,,,i discovered Red Square....and THe BIG SHOW in Pa.....all within a week of each other....I met Stevasurus..ask him for his thoughts... and he talked an hour.,,,,Thanks Steve,,,,My Wheel fell off....seems adapter spacers need Bob Maynards Lug nut conversion,,,,thanks again Bob... I had an issue with no belt cover....In walks John Wallfish.....He made 2 belt stops...(( that are still on the tractor)) that made driving much more fun.... I ran out of gas in turn 3........2 guys came with 2 different gas cans....and I still dont know who they were....And all this was my first time at a show with a tractor... No one ran you off the road,,,,no one shot at you....never heard a foul word,,,,just foul jokes...lolool All this from people i never met... All these people,,,,i wont forget.........and today,,,,,,i learn how to post pics....Whats next.??? I understand there might be Rhubarb pie at the Next Big Show...=) Oh,,Glenn.....you caught the 6 inch hub caps,,,,,on 12 inch wheels.......i will knock down the wheels and run another thread on that.... easy to make.....to hard to explain........

I am trying to find out if my counter display of Wheel Horse Knives have a significant value. I purchased them when I was a dealer in the late 80's. They were placed in the display at that time and have never removed. I have lost the key but have a friend that is a locksmith that can get me in if I want to. The boxes and any sheaths are stored behind the red display board. I have never seen another one of these and can find nothing about them. The top three knives have "Wheel Horse" in the handle. The bottom three are standard knives. I am not sure if I would sell them or not but would like to see if anyone knows the value.

In the mid '50s my dad was looking at options for a garden tractor including an RJ, but he chose a Rototiller which I walked behind about a million miles. It is long gone but I still have those cast iron wheels just like the ones used on the "Roundhoodzilla". I had planned on using them on a non-horse but may change my mind. I could have been riding a , but dad bought a Rototiller, I sure miss my dad.

Im glad people like it...i notice alot of 6 inch hub caps selling last year....and didnt realize black hoods use them...i bought a set and stared at them for a month// i will take pics of everything and post...and they look like they belong on the tractor.to me...as far as the front wheels......it didnt have any when i got it...and the spindles were worn to nubs.....i had found a set of old troy bilt rims....(( what i was told they fit)),,and found 7 inch tires at Miller Tire.... thanks again for all the nice words....i will be bringing this back to the show again this year,,,,i read a post,,,,bring your modified tractor..... well,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,there is nothing stock here,,,,,thanks again..

This deserves FAR more than just a "Like" ! This is an awesome story in and of itself. Does owning a WH make you a good guy? Or do only good guys buy WHs? Both? Seriously! This is not only a great story, but read and reread the thread! What a great bunch!

I need to retract my previous post.....My wife has informed me that I am not in fact retired and that I work for her.............

No Fridays in my week for the past 8 years. Every day is Saturday.

The best part about Friday (now that I'm retired) is that there will be NASCAR Racing all weekend, although this is the last weekend of the season. TGIF

Yes, I work daily 6:30 to 3:00 PM and will until I am 70+ years old! I started life (divorced & remarried) again at 40 so I am in debt the rest of my life! I look forward to 3PM Friday when the 4:30 AM alarm sounds on Monday!

I agree TGIF! When I tell my retired brother I'm going to the Family Farm on 'Saturday" he always says "you mean today! He says every day is Saturday except Sunday. On Sunday his routine changes to go to church! What else are brothers for!

I think we have all the pictures picked for this year's calendar. Unless the Mods lock the thread, you can still post your pictures...just know that they will not be in this year's PDF. Thanks to all that participated, the pictures are outstanding. Look for Squonk to start an order thread if you want to get a professional calendar.

I'm pulling for Gordon. It would be cool to see him win a Championship in his last season. He might do it too, if Harvick has problems.

I guess the science behind the rust being electrically resistant and concentrating the heat seems reasonable, but I am not about to consider doing the "Short out a battery trick"! The bolt may be rusted in place or corroded due to dissimilar metals, or it could be cross threaded. Also, the concentrated heat probably would damage the aluminum block that the bolt is in

As far as I know it has never been tampered with. Will drain and check for any metal shavers and condition of oil etc. I just wanted to know if most parts are available just encase I do have an issue. I have the unit whole machine torn down to the very last pieces except the engine and trans. So far all looking great. The only thing that worried me is when the wheels were being removed and I turned the wheel I felt a little vibration and the other side rotated the opposite direction, normal if I know my diffs. The only thing was I could feel a slight vibration. I want to thank you both for you quick response and I have looked at the videos and want to tell you how glad I am for you doing these. I will keep you posted on what I find when I drain the trans this weekend. Thanks again.

Probably great, the mounts they come with are designed to mount on a bumper or roof. They were only $18 a couple of days ago. Mine came postage due, so the seller had to give me a $9.75 credit.

I always end up with the new tires that have been on the bottom of the stack............. Never any fun to seat the bead. If I tried ether and spun around backwards like the guy in the video they would probably have to surgically remove the wheel and tire from my a**.

There are a lot of guys against pressure washing because of the obvious water in places you don't want. I think its ok as long as you don't get too crazy and use real hi pressure. I have a pressure reg on one of mine I dial down. Most washers you can inject degreaser as well. If you don't have a pressure reg. use distance. ..some washers will take the paint &decals right off so be careful. I hose all my workers off after use so the build up isn't so bad and I have the Toro quick disconnect deck washers on all my decks. I do pay the price for my analness....thing bolts seem rust and set more and I think I go thru spindle bearings more than I should .....keep em greased helps. I also use regular hose pressure right into the fan inlet of a running motor to keep fins clean. Run the motor till good and hot to dry. I run the decks after cleaning to help dry out too. The Gunk Bubble Brite in a spray can can be helpful on really bad stuff.

I'll cover the floor with a drop cloth and try to save all the patina when I start on my 654. Wouldn't want to start a bidding war but I might only have enough for 2 or 3 tractors so perhaps I should take advance deposits.

fired up #2 this morning and took it for a run. figured id give it one last run all together before starting to strip it for the rest of #3s build. took some pics of both of them together. easy to see the wide stance of the jd front axle/wheel and tire combination.
