Finally, got all it's little bugs worked out!!! Mowed with the 603 Special today...performed flawlessly, of course...'cause it's a !!! So, as it turns out...this little Indian is another great little worker. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDSD6or01XA&feature=c4-overview&list=UUd_ptV1TUpPlW1VhCjxez_Q Tecumseh power baby!

We bought a 953 Wheel Horse in parts Thursday night. Loaded all after the first big one inch rainfall (we have had four more since in Northwest Indiana at my parents place). I was surprised to find an original 953 steering wheel h=that had the diamond shape center. After unloading more parts and dumping water out of some coffee cans full of small parts, I came across a real surprise-a center cap for the 953 in great condition. The steering wheel has cracks and will need repairs and a new finish. The cap will just need repainted on the top and a new decal! We are going to put a 953 back together with all the original parts. Our motor is painted and ready to go but I will be competing a Ross steering gear rebuild and a Hein-Werner hydraulic pump rebuild with this project.

Great to see it running Craig. With all the bad press the Tecumseh gets I'm sort of relieved to see yours up and running so well. Like I said elsewhere maybe it's because folks just aren't familiar with them. If ours turns out near as good as that sounds and runs we'll be happy. Good job.

I made up a link rod and trunion just like this one:) The sun came out this afternoon, so i thought it would be the perfect opportunity to try it all out the 48" deck cuts lovely, and my 12hp engine keeps up with it so im really chuffed. Then i realised i lost this bit, number 28, the leveler. must have not tightened the lock nut up enough Have to have another hunt round for it tomorow. Action pics will follow:) cheers, Daniel

Are you talking about refacing the seat area on the valves? or just shortening the other end of the stem to get the correct valve clearance? Refacing the seat area is usually done on a valve refacing machine that grinds the seat true. They can also be done in a lathe, either way a machine shop is required. Grinding the end of the valve stem to provide valve to tappet clearance (for example on the small block Kohlers) can be done at home on a bench grinder. Care must be taken to gind the stem square. I clamp a V block to the rest next to the grinding wheel, and use the side of the wheel. Take very small cuts and check the clearance often, one the gap is too big its time to buy a new valve. An old valve refacing machine waiting for me to get around to a bit of refurbishment:

I had this 1954 Dodge Red Ram Hemi engine laying in the garage for many years. I wanted to build a power unit out of it but I tripped over these 1959 Copar Panzer parts and thought, hmmmm! So I have it mocked up so far but I'll have to make a new frame and weld it together. It looks pretty beefy so far! Should I do it or what? Looks like a done deal to me! KJ

Hello everyone!! A few weeks ago I was fortunate to stumble upon a pretty nice 312-8 with 675 hours. Much to my wife’s dismay, I drug it home but once she took it for a drive she was smiling from ear to ear. She actually said she liked it better than my 520. I kinda scratched my head and just said ok dear. Anyway, I decided I wanted to put 23x10.5-12 on the rear of my 312 instead of the 23x9.5-12 that is stock. I found a set of Goodyear tires without rims at a consignment sale that came home with me. Then the hunt for rims began….Low and behold I found a set of rims that my neighbor had laying around his garage. I was told they came off his CASE and he didn’t need them anymore. So tonight I decided to scuff them up and paint them metallic silver to cover up the red. I have yet to find an exact match to the factory silver WH put on their wheels that I am happy with. I have found though, if you have a nick in your factory rim, a Sharpie Metallic Silver marker is the best for the task of touching it up. IMHO. So my question is this: I blended a mix of metallic silver and Smoke Grey paint to produce the color of the rims below, do they look close enough for horse shoes? I can’t decide if I’m happy with the color or not or if I need to do a grey metallic. I’d appreciate any opinion. Thanks!! Below is also a pic of the 312 they wheels and tires are going on.

Pictures? - Why sure! I've decided to start taking pictures of the different implements I do not use often instead of relying on memory when a few years pass and it's time to use them. Gary gave a concise description of the spring - very clear did not find muddy. Could not find a similar spring but used a couple in tandem that worked. Also saw an ad this week on CL someone had a 50" Wheel Horse Plow" for sale locally - $100.00. Inquired immediately and was gone...

Hi Folks, I got some springs locally for the handle and used a shorter link I have for a dozer blade and used it with the mower T Bar and chain and floated the grader blade. It did a fairly good job digging up the remnants of the killed weeds/grass, but could not get all and missed the down pressure. While grading and thinking about it the brain fart cleared... Could not get the 12" jogged link installed as I had the rock shaft in the full down position while attempting to connect the LWR bar link to the grader (I'm dense some times). As it got dark brought it in the garage disconnected the T bar and ran the lift/rock shaft up a bit and was able to connect the 12" bar link easily. Now as before can lift the front wheels clear of the ground. Although with the blade full up there is not too much ground clearance but I'm ripping out the lawn I'm working on so if it digs in while going from the pavement to the lawn no big deal. I'll try it in the morning and finish leveling the yard. With the lift rock shaft full up I have approx. 1" ground clearance. This seems a bit low, what clearance is typical with the grader blade while fully retracted? I appreciate all taking the time to respond - Thanks!

You're not actually going to sit on it ,are you? That's really nice artwork. I waste a lot of time but never do something nice like that seat. Very creative, Craig. :handgestures-thumbupright:

Lately I've grown quite tired of looking at my bare seat pan, decided to spruce it up a little until it's reupholstered. So what do you think now, is it a go, or no go? :confusion-shrug:

I like it. A smaller version would even look great on the rear of the backrest panel.

There have been a few members on here who have that wheel or who have mentioned it in the past. It would be nice to have a replacement center section, have not seen many nice originals.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

I have never a steering wheel Insert like that, but almost anything could have come from the Wheel Horse factory. The factory did not make any steering wheels themselves; but bought them from many different sources over the years. That insert is made of stamped metal, but it could be easily duplicated in plastic, and thicker so it fits in snugly. I'm sure that Terry should be able to make a triangle decal to fit and to match. Does anyone else have this type of steering wheel on their tractor? Will you be at the October 5th Meet & Greet in Leesberg, where we could look at your Steering Wheel & Insert? Glen ...

Heard in the Brown's board room... "Hey I got a great idea let's get rid of that new running back we got last year ya know the one that was the number 3 pick and trade him for a number 20 pick in next years draft. Cause you know we can't count and our quarterbacks suck so why would they need someone to hand the ball too." When are they ever going to learn that no matter how many first round picks you have you still have to be able to turn a rookie into and all-star. I mean hell look at that idiot Tebow did great in college and now NFL teams can't get rid of him fast enough.

Great video Craig!!! Next year you have to bring your Tribe of Little Idians down to my house so you can let them run wild cutting acre after acre of grass here where I live. I mean that!!!

Very cool. Have you already thought about sending that original center over to Glen to see if he can add it to his reproductions?

Just be careful grinding on the side of the wheel, unless you have a cup stone you may wind up with shrapnel in your face. I've seen the aftermath of such an incident and it wasn't pretty...

I have forgot to turn the pump on and the tractor ran fine with out it for a few min. before I turned the pump on, I still need to run return lines, right now they dump in to a old WD40 can on the frame rail.

I have not had mine on any hydro's. I can tell you that for me personally I have had to remove the mower trunion or what lifts your t-bar. That thing just kept getting it the way. Been a while since I have used it, but I don't remember anything in the manual that says Remove the mower trunion. I did and it made life way more easier.

Submitting the 1991 312H Bought it new, rebuilt it in 2011 with inspiration provided by this forum. Here's before- Here's after- You can read about my rebuild here- I see that for some reason ,pictures are missing until post #36. Here is the link to those pictures-http://s7.photobucket.com/user/thebrnas/library/?sort=3&page=1 Just pick any folder labeled 312H ,I took quite a few pics to document the rebuild and it made it very easy to reassemble. There's also the "Infamous Roll Over" here-

Well operation Harrison Elementary School Tractor club has begun! I took an early morning drive yesterday to meet David Rice (RCTruckdaddy) I believe that is his RS name. He was nice enough to meet me half way. We swapped the tractor over on to my trailer and then had a great conversation. Headed back home and let her sit. She is a great candidate for the kids to get dirty with. Most of the parts it needs I believe I have on the shelf, but there are few things I don't think I have so I may ask if anyone has those items available for a small fee. Many folks that follow along on my Facebook page "Wheel Horse Junkies" have jumped in to lend a hand. Terry Dennis (Vinylguy) has willingly offered up a new set of decals for the machine. Bud Andrews is going to get me squared away with a new battery when the time comes. Daniel Aungst is sending a gift card to TSC to help me with costs of materials. I am trying to work with some local groups that would be willing to chip in as well so I don't have to cover the entire project out of my own pocket. Our first meeting is this Wednesday after school. We will be focused completely on safety as I continue to round up the much needed parts for this. The kids will get a chance to see the tractor for the first time and we will talk about how we are going to tackle the project. It should be a lot of fun!!!! Here it is after David so proudly presented it to me. Thank you again everyone that has given encouragement!

And the best part is these kids will learn that lawn tractors are not all green and yellow and come from a big box store for 1200 bucks, and that you have to buy a new one every 4 years.

I would guess that the seat switch is OK. It's doing what it's supposed to be doing... if your butt comes off the seat it should cut the engine if the PTO is engaged. If yer bouncin' enough, your butt is coming off the seat! Maybe you just need to slow down a bit so you don't bounce around so much, or fill them potholes in yer turf! And I bet it's around $300 ain't it? I don't think you need a new one... Maybe post an ad in the classifieds that you are looking for someone who can rebuild the carb for you? Just be careful who you send it to, you might never see it again... don't ship it to Nigeria!

Well I fixed my steering problem today. It was the pin in the front of the steering lower shaft as TT thought. I was able to tap it out lightly pretty easily once I picked up the front end. I replaced it and it seems reasonably tight now. Tie rods could use some work as well, but for now its OK because I can at least turn the wheels and push it around my shop when I need to. I picked up a pretty decent set of 23 x 10.5 x 12 tires on nice wheels today as well. My tires are all shot so these will do nicely. I would like to go back to the duals eventually with good rubber, but for now I just need rubber that holds air. A local store has the 4.80 x 4 x 8's on sale right now for $19 so I will probably pick up a pair of them and some tubes for the front.
