I was going through some old pictures with my family over the Christmas weekend, and we found this picture of me at age 7, taken in 1957. It is the first picture that I know of, of me using a piece of lawn or garden power equipment on my own. As you can see, I have my Radio Super wagon attached to the back of a David Bradley? with a sickle bar. Let's see the oldest picture that you can find of YOU and your first solo with powered lawn or garden equipment.

How about my Grandsons first time working on an engine? 10 seconds later he smacked me square in the nose with the Wrench and made Pa Pa cry... TIP OF THE DAY: 9/16 WRENCH TO THE TIP OF THE NOSE STARTS THE WATER WORKS IMMEDIATELY!

The 05-48MS05 is included in this parts manual: But the diagrams in there indicate two separate belt covers (one left and one right), as opposed to the one-piece cover in Chris' second photo. So assuming this is actually an original 48" deck, I'd have to guess it's a 05-48SC01. But also keep in mind I'm no expert, just going by the manuals. :)

:WRS: Save yourself the future aggravation and install a new chain now. #40 roller chain is available at most agricultural/farm product stores, as well as many OPE dealers. Buy a 10 ft. length and you'll have enough for a spare - if you purchase an additional connector (master) link. It beats the heck out of dealing with this:

Some might frown upon the modifications, but whoever owned that tractor needed it to use, not tote it around to shows on a trailer. If that tractor was in my possession, I would leave the transmission in it, install a K-90/91 Kohler , and get it moving under it's own power. If it works well, do a little cosmetic work and enjoy the heck out of it. I don't think there's anything wrong with having something unique that will stand out in a sea of shiny red tractors. Some of the best ideas and inventions came from backyards, garages, and farms...... and that includes Wheel Horse tractors. Just because it's not Elmer and Cecil's history doesn't mean that it's not worth preserving. :USA:

If it was purchased with the 418, it could be a 05-48SC01 or a 05-48MS05 Note: The offset right draft bar and corresponding rear mounting bracket is indicative of it being set-up for use with a tractor-powered collection system. Use either of those model numbers to access the illustrated parts list at Toro.com, PartsTree.com, etc. Replacement of the spindle shaft requires removal of the top nut, pulley, and woodruff key. (where applicable) The shaft should then pull out of the bottom of the housing. (might need to remove the zerk fitting and "drive" the shaft out using a soft drift and hammer) The top bearing is driven out using a long drift up through from the bottom & opposite for the bottom bearing. The spacer between the bearings can be pushed to the side enough to get the drift on the inner race of the first bearing. Once the first bearing is out, remove the spacer and drive out the other bearing. Assemble in reverse order.

i have a 308-8 that threw a rod years ago,way before i had a computer so a replacement was near1800 back then,i didnt know about buying a block, but the crank was toast too,cam shaft, every thing so my local shop said buy a whole engine, well that was way too much and in my opinion 8 hp is too small for my needs, the orig motor only lasted 10 years and i maintained it all the way,i have greased it every oil change and it shows, all the joints are good, deck spindles sre mint too, anyway i put a 13 hp honda in 1996,and loved it since,(im a true kohler guy though,if i could have any engine given to me it would be the k or magnum 16hp)im now on my second honda,i didnt tighten the air filter once and alot of dust got in and from there she went down hill, when i joined the square it got me back into my horse and i got another honda for it,its my mutt and it was my first from new,and it will be the last to leave, which will be never

Ken, I agree 100%. I don't think you could put another tractor in front of me that I would pick over a Senior like that.
