I looked at the Christmas countdown and sadly remembered a personal goal that I had hoped to accomplish before, well Thanksgiving actually, and I want to share that with you. A couple of months ago I was working on a plan to raise money to donate to Childhood Cancer (St. Baldrick) in Max's name. Behind the scenes I had contacted Keith at www.wheelhorse.org, who was all in favor, and was about to contact MTF (www.mytractorforum.com) as well and I am certain they would have helped, I had even contacted Tom Nunn with more information to follow. I was going to purchase custom made decals (non-forum specific from Terry) to be sold at the forums (something like "Tractors for a cause" ) with the profits going to St. Baldrick. It was a grand plan, and was coming along so nicely..... but... That's when we lost RedSquare. The plan to raise money for St. Baldrick took a back seat to getting RedSquare back up, and not that a tractor forum is more important than childhood cancer (because it will NEVER be), but because RedSquare was the tool that would be used for this charitable event. Unfortunately, between work and recovering the forum, the plan was dropped, at least for now, and I am personally disappointed with myself for not getting it off the ground sooner. While I am completely appreciative of your donations to RedSquare (and they are needed) during this time of the year (whether you celebrate Christmas or not) please remember those who are in need. Maybe that $10 you were going to spend for orings, could be used to feed a family for a day? That $20 from uncle Louie, is that the little extra needed to save a child's life who is suffering from Cancer? Or even that $25 donation to RedSquare, I think that there are far more who need than the forum right now. So my message to you, is please remember those who need help your help. Some are asking and some are not and please remember the heroic fight of little Max and how you yes YOU made a real difference in that young man's life and his family 2 years ago for his Christmas. I do wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and hope that you enjoy the holiday with your family. If you don't celebrate Christmas, I still wish joy and happiness to you and your families, but please put that extra change in the bucket where the man or woman is standing in the cold ringing a bell. Put that unwraped toy in the Toys for Tot's collection, thank a Veteran even if it's just words, and help stop Childhood Cancer in anyway you can, cause we need our kids, even if Santa put them on the naughty list, they still deserve to see the coal in their stocking, as I have far too many times. ~Merry Christmas 2011~

Here are a couple of photos of my ditch mower. The state thinks I need a canyon for a ditch, so after a year of weed eater tourture, I decided that there had to be a better way. I just took an old lawnboy and made a new aluminum deck with open ends, then made a frame and arms from square tubing. A harbor freight winch raises and lowers the arms with the control switch incorporated into the tractors motion lever. On the right side of the tractor, there is a car battery, onboard charger, and 200 pounds of steel which all serves as a counterweight. This was the sixth year I've used it and have had really good luck so far. The only thing I want to change is to make the unit quick tach so the tractor could be used for other things.

Found this on the front of a trailer that was hauling cars for scrap. , The engine would not turn over and needless to say was very hard to steer. Noticed that the dents in or rather out on the fan shroud. , Thought that was very strange and needed a little CSI right away. Got the fan shroud off and found a few loose parts. , After digging through the loose fins, found the lifting (on top of the flywheel) bracket that should have been on a head bolt had found it's way to the flywheel. Suspect that the head gasket was replaced and ... well, where did that thing go must not be important. Bet it made one heck of a noise. Picked up a flywheel off $bay gave it a fresh drink and fired right up. The lift cylinder leaks, needs a steering wheel and some deck belts and look out grass. Mike

Thanks John, I wouldn't even want to start to add it up! But I would bet by the time I am all done with it and all the Special groceries & rebuilt and all, I would say about 6 G A buddy of mine and I had a simular conversation and he said Gee thats a little much isnt it? I looked at him and said how much you got in that 4wheel dr truck and new stainless steel Snow way plow? I said ya know look at it this way, when yer layin out in the driveway flat on yer back havin a heart attack from shoveling snow at that point that 6-G would sound pretty cheap when your life is flashing in front of you. Besides enjoy yerself watchin me waste my money! ~Duke

I've learnt a bit tonight, I guess I've never compared the boxes side by side, and I guess I've always just ordered whatever bearings came out and never noticed that some had one bearing on the input shaft, and some had 2. For what its worth, the part of the case that contains the 2 bearings is 2.080" thick from the machined face on the inside of the case to the very outside of the case. I had always assumed that the 5053 and the 5058 were the same box, with the only difference being the differential and axle size.

I have heard of the rubber tire chains, but have never seen any in action. From what Lane Ranger is saying, I think they would work very well, and NOT scratch up the concrete or black top drives.

I have used the rubber tire chains on my 1975 B-80 Wheel Horse with my 42 inch Snow/Dozer blade. I have steel wheel weights on the back and I used steel chains in the past. The steel chains would leave scratch marks on my concrete drive when the chins and wheels would spin on the ice and snow compacted after several days on the ground. I bought the rubber tire chains as I heard they would grip well on ice and snow and preserve the concerte -which I also updated with a $7000 pouring last year. Here are some photos of the chains on the tractor and I will make sure to post a video after the first big snow for all to see in action. I am a believer in their ability to provide the needed traction to move the plow ful of snow on ice and snow covered concrete pavement and drives after my first years's use. These are about - three times as expensive as steel chains -but they work well.

Golf cart mufflers work great. Also, I use A.O. safety ear phones with a radio built in, love em.

It was 12 deg, here in Central Oregon this morning. My 418a was kept out side last night. I just changed the oil to 10-30 Synthetic oil and replaced the filter. I started the tractor with trans dis-engaged and ran it for 3 or 4 minutes, then engaged the trans and let it run at 1/2 throttle for 3 or 4 min while I loaded the trailer with 3 110lb alfalfa bales and drove off with no problems. I personally believe all equipment should warm up on cold start. On my old for truck on cold mornings I start it then shift the transfer case into neutral and put the trans in 2nd gear and and let it warm up for 10 minutes. My father inlaw said they did this on the pipeline in Alaska so they got little damage to components. so I pretty much do the same thing whether it is my JD 4630, WH or the old F250 4x4. Just thought I would comment. Good day to all. Chris
