11 pointsOne hour round road trip this morning. I really didn’t need another, but for the price I couldn’t pass it up. 314H and 48” blade for $125. Going to give it a good scrubbing first to see what I have to work It was missing a front tire. I took one off the 420 to make it easier to load.

9 pointsReplaced a melted fuse block on the 520 FEL. Not a fun job but doable. The usual 30 amp fuse was the culprit. This one had the fuse cover on it. The cover did protect dirt from getting in but high current thru the fuse eventually created a runaway situation. The lesson here is @sqrlgtr even with a cover it pays to inspect it. This is the same circuit that can take out the nine pin. More fun ... started parting out this one. More on another thread why it was a parts tractor and it wasn't the mouse house or Squonkies favorite oil filter.

7 pointsPut the hood back on the 520H today. Got all of the mechanical stuff fixed . Except the lights front or back dont work maybe a bad switch? Im going to try a resto. on this one in near future, never redone a later model before.

7 pointsSlowly getting the tractors outta storage in back shed. Wanna go thru them one at a time getting them ready for summer. Hasn't been easy cause we've had so much rain. Yard is like a swamp & don't wanna have a mess moving them from shed to garage. Got the rat rod all ready & added a simple belt guard. Have been fortunate so far not to get my jeans jammed up in pulleys/belt. Try to keep moving on to next ones....

6 pointsI loaded the feeder about a week ago. The first one showed up this evening. I haven't set out the hummingbird feeders yet but will this weekend.

5 pointsSo, after breaking my #1 cardinal rule when it comes to cutting the lawn, “grass must be 100% totally dry before cutting”. Broken out of necessity due to upcoming business travel next week I had to cut the grass this past Thursday so I can cut Tuesday next week before I leave on Wednesday morning. The skies were sketchy but I decided to go for it. 10 minutes in, those skies started raining, figured oh well, here we go. By the time I was finished mowing the damage was done, my tractor looked like a big green booger. So I hosed it off and sprayed under the deck the best I could, but knowing that as anal as I am I needed to remove the deck for a thorough cleaning and boy am I glad I did. Getting the deck off was the fun part, my shoulder is still in the healing process from my rotator cuff surgery in January. So borrowing the idea from a few fellas here, I used my garage hoist and lifted the front end up and rolled it out for a proper cleaning. And will roll it back in under here in a few minutes. Have a great weekend!

5 pointsA few free projects redone during the pandemic. The swing and wheelbarrow were literally sitting on a dump pile. The trailer was in a field behind my brother’s house. A little paint, new wood, wheels and some stain and voila usable. My parents have the swing. I still have the wheelbarrow as I figured I’d use it. And I use the trailer pretty steadily from spring to fall.

4 pointsSo anyone who actually owns a black hood can see that as with most of my machines, I end up adapting different parts for some things. That being said, I prefer the look of the older rear fenders on a black hood. I found one in my parts but it had several cracks and dents to fix. Not to mention the rear of the fender was badly rusted. In addition I was going to have to add the square hole over the eccentric to use on an Eaton. I had a fairly decent fender from a Charger, so I just copied the bolt pattern, square cutout for the hydro, and the dipstic and fuel holes. Turned out great and will need far less repair that the newer one. I also got the tie rods made up. Heim joints on both ends.

4 pointsI'm afraid so ... the hole would buff right out with some AL or JB weld. it's the damage inside that scrapped it. I'll still crack the cases just to see. Inquiring minds wanna know. These were very popular tractors in Toro's ending of . A fair motor too until Briggs went south. That is true but my same 26 year old vertical is still in pristine shape and always has been a daily mower. Makes a guy wonder if he took good care of todays big box mowers it would still be operating in 26 years? Point of the whole story is check the dammed OIL!!!

4 pointsMade a bench out of trash picked skis and bench frame. Fertility God Kokopelli (on skis, on a bench, what could possibly go wrong) was my inspiration...

4 pointsYears ago when I first joined on here, I’ve learned so much and it’s the friendliest forum I’ve been part of. I keep interest in my WH and keep it going for two reasons, my dad, and this forum. I feel like the older generation is starting to fade away, which is very sad, and the newer generation is on other social media like facebook and instagram and others. I look back at posts from 7-8 years ago and quite a few of the usernames are now green, very sad, may they rest in peace. We gotta get this generation into this hobby and addiction. I only use FB for the marketplace, when sellers/buyers aren’t asking for the moon or lowballing. We gotta let folks know how great this site is, as the people and information have been such a big help over the years for me. Confucius say “good people+good tractors=happiness.”

4 pointsGot the tri-ribs swapped over, replaced the front tie rods, and topped off the trans oil. Then gave my youngest a ride around the yard. It’s nice having this back up and running fully again.
-
3 pointsI'll tear this one down at some point and look for an axle if everything else checks out. Not sure I'll go to the extent of welding and turning. We don't have a lathe big enough in our shop at work (not a machine shop, just maintenance).
-
3 pointsThat's a good find and somewhat rare here in NC. I have a couple and really like them. I've torn them down and cleaned them up so I understand the engineering and physics. That welded cylinder is a challenge now for me. I think at this point there is good value in the cylinders with the threaded end to make rebuilds easier, not requiring cutting and re-welding.

3 pointsI have a Bolen BL-160 weed wacker (trimmer, to you younger people). I bought it several years ago, and probably use it 1-2 hours a year. Yesterday I brought it out to do some wacking. About half way through it shut down and would not restart. I located an owner's manual online. It said to clean the air filter or it could starve for air. I didn't even know it had an air filter. I snapped the door open, and low and behold, there's NO filter. It had to come from the factory like that. 😡 I figured I'd better see how dirty all the internals were. They were perfectly clean. Pulled the spark plug and it was in pretty rough shape. Ordered both from Amazon. Today the parts arrived so I installed them, and it fired right up.🖖

3 pointsTook the 520H I have been working on out for a walk about today. Really glad I rescued this ol girl a few more years setting around would have been rough on her. Must have set outside the last few years by the way the decals, paint and gauge faces where sun faded.

3 pointsTook the FEL off the 16 auto that it came on. Moving it to the shop to drop the sub-frame so it can go on the c-165. Have to investigate the hub and axle on the 16 auto to see if the axle can be saved. It doesn't look promising so there might be a whole gearbox swap rather than an axle repair in front of me. We'll see. The pump and motor work fine.

3 pointsSo I am fond of making use of other people's trash... thus this thread. Here is my latest: skibenchapelli... Trash picked: bench, two pair cross country skis and one pair down hill skis. Remove rotted wood from bench, cut skis to fit and bam... a new very permanent bench... kokopelli on skis was my artistic inspiration...

3 pointsHaving had some of 🧸’s “coffee”, I can relate that it’s the only time I’ve had coffee that I could both drink and chew. 😉

3 pointsNope not a blade ... Big Unit gets the prize. Although hitting a stump with a blade can cause it. It wasn't hitting a stump that did it ... It wasn't the mouse house ... it wasn't the Squonkies orange death although it was oil related. So after finding the not uncommon Briggs aluminum key way sheared I got as excited as a groom on wedding night. The motor does somewhat turn over with a pipe wrench on the stub. If that's all it is the mouse house will buff out and maybe I can save this motor right? Maybe go thru it for a a spare engine? Just for practice? Hiding behind the starter ... the reason for the abrupt engine stop. These motors are actually not too bad if oil is checked.

3 pointsNot “to” my WH but “for” it. In the fall, I made a small cart to hold my 36” RD Gear mower deck for easier storage and movement during its off season. An unanticipated benefit was easy access for sharpening and cleaning and for re-greasing one of the gearboxes. Now that I’ve got the mower back on the tractor, I decided to upgrade the cart so that it’ll hold the blade. Here it is with the mower and now with the blade.

2 pointsMade some non slip pads tonight for the foot boards on the 418. Got the rubber from work and custom made with some gorilla spray adhesive. Not bad for first time with a utility knife. Lol!!
-
2 pointsYeah, that's great that he does that. I sent one to him but he felt like the pitting on the rod was too much so I just replaced it. Not many places will touch that for what he charges so huge kudos to him for doing that for us.
-
2 pointsI sent one of the welded cylinders to Lowell at wheelhorse parts and more. He cuts them open and refurbishes them. Came back good as new, maybe better. I now have a few of each type. I just ordered two seal kits for the serviceable type.
-
2 pointsWell, I pulled the set screw, there was no key there so I spun the wheels and it broke loose. Now to look and see what I've got...
-
2 pointsI love the soft start module on my electric PTO, I got it before the cost went crazy
-
2 pointsIf you are talking about the two piece wheel weights for the rear tires as pictured below they are worth almost as much as the tractor. With the weights and snow plow I would suggest $ 800 to $1,000 as a good price.
-
2 pointsAh, the high milage accessory crankcase vent.... (As Marvin the Martian said... "And there was a big Kaboom!!") That engine is wasteacated. Maybe that Oh-so-efficient Fram spin on oil filter can be cleaned of the chunks and reused??? So it is my guesstimation that the crank came to a sudden stop at speed and the flywheel above said "I'm not done yet" and kept going??
-
2 pointsPropane burns much cleaner than gasoline. I've grown up around propane powered Ford Trucks, both carbureted and fuel injected and the occasional John Deere 720 & Farmall that also ran off propane. The only downside was difficulty starting in extremely cold temperatures since propane has a boiling point of -42°C/-44°F which occasionally caused the regulators/vaporizers to ice up/vapor lock.

2 pointsPlow day complete, pool shed complete, waiting on fence materials, it’s a good day to work on an engine! ARP head studs swapped in place of bolts, torqued to 80 ft lbs rather than not close to 65, blue loctite on block side threads. New rear main seal and oil pan gasket, fresh paint cooking next to the oil fire. Once it gets set up a bit, I’ll roll it over and finish assembling the top end IMG_4296.mov

2 pointsIt was in the 60’s so the group came out for a triple side shot. The 308 got salt cleaned out, the 312 did a test mow as the front yard needed it. I also took a ride on the C-141 too. I got some seat time on them all.
