I Love Lucy Day, which takes place on October 15, celebrates the trendsetting sitcom of the same name, I Love Lucy. Premiering on this day in 1951 and lasting until May of 1957, the hilarious comedy spearheaded by Lucille Ball as the bubbly, aspiring-star Lucy, and her real-life husband Desi Arnaz as singer and bandleader Ricky Ricardo took America by storm. Shot in Hollywood, the show was innovative and fresh. It was the first sitcom to be shot in 35mm film in front of a live audience, those were real laughs we were hearing, not canned laughter. Three cameras were used simultaneously to shoot the show, allowing three different angles for each scene. After Lucy’s pregnancy, the reruns that were shown as a way to let her rest were so popular that it effectively started the concept of the rerun, revolutionizing TV as we know it. I Love Lucy was the most-watched television show in the country for most of its airtime, even becoming the first show to end while at the top of the Nielsen ratings. It won five Emmy awards and has consistently been called one of the greatest shows in television history. Following the end of the original run of the series, one-hour episodes rebranded as The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show or The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour were broadcasted from 1957 to 1960. Starting in 1962, Ball starred in The Lucy Show, which ran until 1968, when Here’s Lucy started and broadcasted until 1974. Today reruns of I Love Lucy are broadcast on several late-night networks, such as the Hallmark Channel, TBS, Nick and Nite, and TV Land, as well as many streaming sites. It is credited to be the longest-broadcasted TV show of all time.

Well except for the 855 I should have never sold! So Tom @Shynon texts me a listing on FB for this girl and I stepped on it immediately. I learned long ago ya snooze ya loose. Just got yourself a free plow day t 👕 Tom. It's not real local but a nice hr 1/2 away. It looked real nice in the few pics that were shown but we know how pics look. At first look at it I knew right away it was going on the trailer. Love at first sight... yep. For what price was the only issue. More after the red porn...

To the right buyer. Still have to factor in the true cost of ownership - transportation, disassembly, shipping, etc. Time is money - I agree with Eric that a non-runner is just a parts machine, nothing more. Go with a lowball offer or walk away.

Seller just text me it has 405 hours on meter. Of course has the meter worked in its later years. Im leaning towards trying to trade him some implements I have multiples of and treat it as a parts machine. If he bites he’s would actually be helping me get stuff out of the barn.

That’s a sweetheart of an original tractor Jim ! Sounds like the same story when I bought my one owner (he passed and I got it from his nephew that didn’t want it) 1057 that I only got him down $25 . I wasn’t leaving it there regardless like you said . Were the engines painted red at Kohler and just installed going down the assembly line ? My 1057 engine though in pictures the color is similar it looks different up close and feels different . Like a difference between a lacquer and an enamel . I have this 856 that from what I can tell is almost all original too. I have no reason to believe the rear tires and rims aren’t original also to the tractor either compared with the 1057 rear rims .

Thanks guys .. billies & rednecks my favorite people! When I take a dirt nap one of you bozos is gonna get this one ... keep that in mind. On the price he was askin for 400 smackaroos and wouldn't budge. Got more in it than that he says ... understandable right? I've used that one many times. I even tried the old "gonna leave with and empty trailer" bit and "how 'bout little off for gas money" ...Wouldn't budge. After reading the guy a bit more I played my ace card and let it out that I was a collector/restorer. Busted out the phone and showed pics. "Well as long as it's going to a good home" he says... came down abit. I woulda took it for a couple bennies more! Wasn't gonna take the chance it would go to a horse abuser. None taken ... I was never a fan of black hoods... though they was goofy lookin. Like Sylvia but they both grew on me. The autos do have there place in snow blowing tho. Not big on them for tilling.

So I know how much yall like these “what’s it worth threads 2 weeks ago at a tractor show I was talking with a fella on a WH B80. He said he had this 520H that he hadn’t done anything with since about the same time he got a running Cub. It sat 5 years before he got it and it has sat another year for him. Of course I had to ask if it was for sale or trade for something. I’ve been looking for something with an Eaton Hydro. This is the first one I’ve come across within a few hours from me. Not sure this is the one or not, appreciate yalls comments. Notice front hood at lights bent, hole patched in deck and shot seat. What else do yall see? This comes up as a 1993 model, so it would have the forward swept front axle and the gear reduction steering which I want. (I was lazy and used ChatGPT to look it up for me) If the engine is toast I would put a 16 hp Kohler K341 in it. Rear axles don’t look like they are leaking in this picture. Does the 520 have a mechanical hour meter that can be read anytime, or a digital electronic one? Tractor doesn’t look to to rusty, even has 4 rusty hubcaps. But I suspect it would get worker painted over time.

Closest I came... One summer working as a general laborer for brick layers. Being low man on the totem pole I had to make lunches which consisted of something on a small grill. If things weren't to satisfaction in your mortar mix or the lunch to the journeyman you got a real butt reaming. I had to use a trowel to flip burgers and got a chewing ... they were a little gritty... Next time I washed the trowel first and got reamed cause water was at a premium...

The fact that it is, and probably has been, sitting outside would tell me to avoid it unless my intention was to part it out. Engine and Eaton could both have water in them and the wiring has probably been chewed up. The seller probably attempted to get it running and let it sit because he figured out it was a money pit. If you want a 520 you would probably be ahead of the game to take a long road trip to pick up a good one. The time and money you would dump into this one will be more than the cost of the round trip and a good runner.

I look at a non runner as a "parts" value. That way even if the machine doesn't work for me I can recoup. Splayed forward front axles & gear reduced steering setups are getting $400 - $450. The wiiiiide rear wheels are worth another $150 or so. IMHO that's a $600 value in parts MINIMUM.

FWIW, I suggest we get over where things are manufactured and focus on how they are manufactured. As has been carefully (and IMHO, properly) noted, most sources can make products ranging in quality from junk to spacecraft components depending on the specs and requirements The “where” takes us way close too close to starting a political tangent. The “how” befits a conversation among “good with their hands and interested in machines” folk. Stepping down off my soapbox.

No big deal ... two in the stash Got a 12 & 1077 if that counts. It really wasn't a bucket list tractor until now. Mike @prondzy had a 877 for sale at a show couple years ago. He had a real nice patina buff on it Ollie. I shoulda bought that one. Been using the mid mount on a 857 but she needs a new head gasket so switched to a 856. Figured this mid mount work would be really nice on a short hydro. That's when I got a craw for one. Never dreamed I get one this nice. Was also using the 1077 but a short cuts the corners nicer. I doubt it Richard PO was never a member here. He doesn't do internet just his wife. He didn't know any history on it. Just the corners a little ripped but yes for that old. I think it was used for mowing only in the 60s then put away for years. No theory on how the lift cable got snapped. Yah Mike that owner must have cleaned the deck regular. I'm gonna go over it and a little with it just for the halibut. Blades seem to be loose. Has all new belts including the PIA ones on the deck. Motor does have a brighter patina so maybe something has been done with it. The hydro is not filled with gunk like is often found. Axle seals do weep abit but someone took care of it. Definitely stored inside it's whole life. New to check list is gonna have to wait until this plow day nonsense is over and I get my shop back ...

My closest friend often mentioned how he’d outlived all of his contemporaries. He’d launch into stories of shared experiences that gave me insights into life in the 1930’s, 1940’s, and 1950’s that I enjoyed hearing but to which I couldn’t really relate. Now that losing contemporaries has begun happening to me, I’m starting to understand more fully. Ed, it continues to be your calling to be a witness to those whose lives you’ve shared; may you do it ably.

I'm with pfrederi on this---there is no 'alignment pin'--- just the old gasket super-stuck. I like the black cat idea, but a flat putty knife blade might work better. Find a convenient spot and tap the end of it into the gap to split it apart. NOTE--- I have that gasket on Ebay-- OEM # 5955. $20 eBay item number:136504776861

The C81 I bought from @Sparky this summer is just an example.I got it at a fair price knowing there were missing parts and numerous issues from the neglect / hack fixes of the previous owner. I already had its identical twin, a roller that I have had apart for years. That one gave up some parts for the new one....
  29. 3 points
I think that is just something in the casting. Here is a pic of the Hydro gear on My GT14. I think I see some signs of a casting thing about where yours is . it is not an aligning pin . you have the three bolts out and the nuts off the 2 bolts that go through the transaxle case. There is nothing else...except there is a big gasket with a lot of surface area that has been clamped on her for 50 years. I have used a chisel in the past to free up the motor and also split the trans axle case.

I agree, that is why I posted the link to how it is done. Breaker-less ignition systems are great until they aren't. Once they aren't they are history.

No one is going to agree with me but if it was mine I would convert it to points system. I just did this to one of mine. I had almost all the parts . Coil and condenser Points and points push rod Ignition switch 3 position 5 terminal

Jim I can’t believe that seat is in that condition. I think that’s your sign right there if that seat is in that kind of shape the rest should be the same hopefully. If I remember correctly, that’s the first year of the auto. I had one no offense I just never liked it the automatics. Guess I’m just a gear banger. I hope you go through it front to back and just enjoy it when done. ALSO IT HAS THE SNOOPY KEY. THAT IS A BONUS. .It is a true wheel horse classic.

if he used a tiller and plow i suggest before you buy it -- or settle on price ---------- you get on the ground and from under a foot rest look under the frame to see the rear frame plate that attaches to the transmission - -there are 4 bolts that connect the frame to the tranny -- it can happen from the stress of the tiller and/or plow that it causes a stress fracture from a bolt hole for a couple inches across the plate??????? Good luck - 314's are nice versatile multi use tractors - check out the photos attached for frame plate cracks

Yes, in fact Kohler seems to have used a better quality red paint. Look at most survivor or barn find tractors and you will see the engine tin's paint is brighter than the sheet metal on the tractor.

I did kinda the same with the C-85 I bought from @JCM at the M&G this year. I liked the look of the black hoods An added plus too is it’s mechanically similar enough to what I already have, that if I don't make it a runner. The majority of the parts on it can be donated to any of the others. So far it’s more complete than the C-141 was so it would make a good runner.

Assuming you're comparing metallic gloss to solid gloss... Metallic paints tend to contain a bit more translucent binder in the base to allow the flake to show through. When applied properly it should have as much (if not more) gloss. While it may show more imperfections like dents or waves (bending light) in the sheet metal - the metallic will sometimes be more forgiving for showing small pits and other surface imperfections (trapping light).

Regions vary and so does availability and pricing. I'm in the South and we don't have quite the supply as up North. But in my mind these are what I think are fair pricing for user rigs and align with what usually selling prices seem to be in my parts. Rigs and attachments sell for more by themselves so a package deal usually gets you better pricing. Some sellers are willing to break up the attachments and some aren't. These of course vary by exact condition accordingly: Good working 8 speed variety with mower deck (assuming a 42" or under, the 48" would go higher) - $400-600 Complete Tiller with the belt and front pulley bracket - $250-400 Plow with rear mount bracket - $100-200 Don't take this as gospel, just offering up a starting point for you to think on.

Good point. While they are common and easily repaired it definitely plays to your advantage to point out flaws. I'm not for cheating anyone. That being said, folks sometimes get delusions of grandeur when thinking about the value of selling old machines, especially Wheel Horses. I can't tell you how many times a seller mentions this website and others that somehow add value to the tractor in thier mind.
  47. 2 points
The tiller is likely weeping from an axle seal. I rebuilt mine years ago and they still weep a little. It think the short axle tied to those big tines are just a good recipe for that. The tiller uses double seals on each side, so that tells me it was an engineer's cheap fix to a common issue. The tractor you mention has alot of extras that make providing its worth difficult without some pictures.

I still don't know where you find the time. My whole night got tied up in moving the project Ranger around the house. Of course it doesn't run, has no brakes, and I had to convince the 12 y/o that I knew what I was doing and have done this before. That all ate up a lot of time.
