16 pointsNot super rare, but equally they only surface once every six months and there’s a queue waiting to grab them! I managed to acquire a suburban 400 from a young lad who bought it then realised he couldn’t do anything with it! Had a very large Briggs engine fitted, a VW Beetle steering box and too many hacks to mention. he nabbed the narrow rears and left me with the rest! gearbox full to the brim with water! Interesting stretch chassis to take a Briggs engine. lots of chassis patching! rolling..... making a new hoodstand steering gears - same size and ratio as the original - but will outlast them! looking more like it onto that gearbox it was a mess, all the bearings were gone! they had chopped the bottom of the casing for some reason nearly together - amazon packaging to the rescue as a gasket done - with a modifed C series shifter onto the brake drum - I turned down and old cast pulley. reamed the inside to 3/4" all done - just the pedal and linkage to sort.... Ewan very kindly fired up the forge and made me a pedal. new brake/clutch pedal in place - I thought a bigger bush can't be a bad thing! donor Clinton engine didn't spark - home made puller did a reasonable job. Points cleaned up and all connections clean - we were in action! didn't have a pull start either - so made a start cup and used a new tecumseh pull start finally made two footrests to match. Hard work in the press, but a modified bolster chisel did the job! Finished - just needs the right steering wheel and hood! Does anyone have something that could be shipped to the UK?

9 pointsDock removal day today. Tapped Clyde, the C-197 for hauling duty. Got 5/7 done. I ran out of daylight and energy. For @c-series don and @rjg854: Clyde, the C-195 at work, hauling dock sections and at quitting time:

8 pointsSo, let’s get to some of the good parts! The biggest part of our journey was planning the road trip! Interstate 80 runs from Reno Nevada all the way to Southern Michigan. It was quite easy to plan our route. We never really made an exact goal, but we wanted to be home in three days. 2100 miles, three days, 700 miles per day was our estimated goal. That is not including any travel on Friday. If you can recall, I recently did a trip down to Southern Kentucky and home in one day. That was 915 miles. I set myself a goal to drive 800 miles Saturday, 800 miles Sunday and have an easy drive on Monday. I think I ended up around 900 miles on Saturday. We stayed just outside of Sparks Nevada on Friday and dropped $550 at Walmart on RV, fluids, food, and fluids for us. I wanted to make sure that I had enough oil, coolant, and transmission fluid for any surprise! We drove Sparks Nevada to Laramie, Wyoming on Saturday. We made it from Laramie all the way to the Iowa 80 truckstop on Sunday. That place is huge! Monday we made it home for 2 PM and was able to pick up Rylee from school with the big turd. We saw all kinds of cool sites along the way. We saw deer, antelope, wild horses, roadkill coyotes, it was all great! The views in the mountains never get old. I feel like every single mountain. I see I can take a picture of. I love it just as much as the one before and just as much as the one after. The colors that come out of the ground, the shapes and sizes, the objects that defy gravity, it’s also so beautiful! I also realize that when it gets dark out, there is a very predominant star to the east that I can see from home. Most likely anywhere you are if you look to the east, you’ll see what I’m talking about. I followed that star from Nevada all the way home. We set up a time, lapse camera, had fun, stopping when we wanted to, enjoy a little break at Bonneville salt flats, and all kinds of other cool places along the way whenever we road trip, I try my best to get up early and get a couple hours of drive time in before the world wakes up. we’re also battling time zones. Nevada is three hours behind Michigan and it seemed like we crossed a time zone every day. So, getting up at 4 AM kind of meant that we actually only got up at 5 AM. We lost an hour every day. now, we are home. We don’t exactly know what we will end up doing with this bus. There is enough water damage, body damage, and exterior needs, that we know a big project is going to cost even more money. I also don’t want to lose all the money we’ve “invested“ into this! for not now, I plan to replace the bushings in the track bar that are so sloppy. Then, we will take a breather from it. I did walk the roof today and was kind of impressed. It’s nice to know that it’s one solid panel, not a applied barrier of vinyl or other soft material. It’s hard, solid, and serviceable.

7 pointsNational Checkers Day is on September 23, also known as “Dogs in Politics Day,” and commemorates political canines or candidate pooches, First Fidos, or Revolution Rovers. Checkers Day has nothing to do with the popular board game; rather, it celebrates Richard M. Nixon’s famous ‘checkers’ speech on this very date in 1952.

6 pointsHijacking this thread from EB's new camper to camping in general. Not EB ... comes around goes around! 'Sides I know what yer gonna say ... "It's all good" ... MY progression of camping in pics. Two best things about a camper ... peeing at night ... sink to do dishes ... well OK three ... rain!

6 pointsHopefully, if everything goes according to plan I'll be able to drive my 854 shortly after school because all I've got to do to it is finish making the ignition wire, put the seat on, and put the left rear tire on. However, I know how things are and a 30 minute job will turn into three hours.

6 pointsNothing fancy. I chucked them up in a drill press and hit them with 400 grit. Then I wiped on a couple coats of Flood Penetrol. I was experimenting more than anything and they actually came out pretty nice.

5 pointsJust a friendly FYI. In a URL, everything beginning with the “?” and continuing to the end of the string is stuff tacked on to identify and track you. Consider this link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/111797583847?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=111797583847&targetid=2299003535955&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9021715&poi=&campaignid=22879976798&mkgroupid=192130607908&rlsatarget=pla-2299003535955&abcId=10409101&merchantid=6426064&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22879976798&gbraid=0AAAAAD_QDh9NFg13l6AFfBE-TvfpLXMgL&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIrcqAqavvjwMVsXN_AB11CAPUEAQYBSABEgKAUPD_BwE Only this https://www.ebay.com/itm/111797583847 is needed to get directly to the page on eBay. The rest is to let eBay track a BUNCH of information about the original search itself, as well as the result. Once someone uses the complete link, eBay can, in its database, link the original “searcher” to the new person clicking. “Aha! Bill is connected to Charlie! That may give me more insight into both of them and it may make it valuable to sell to a data broker the knowledge that the two have a relationship." I make it a practice to: - right click on the questionable links and choose “Copy Link" - open a new browser window and paste the copied link into the search box - DO NOT HIT RETURN - drag select all the tracking stuff in the link and delete it - hit Return to have the browser go to the edited link Another way to thwart tracking is to select some text from the desired webpage that clearly identifies it and paste that into the post. This lets others select that text, right click (or long press on a phone) and choose “search with ...” (... being the search engine their device uses) Note: I originally put the gist of this post in a different thread and @WHX?? rightly suggested it should be the start of its own. Done 😄

4 pointsMrs. P and I have never really 100% loved our toy hauler. It has done the trick for a good handful of years, but there were things that we missed about our first camper. Transitioning from a 37 foot bunkhouse to a 40 foot toy hauler, seems like a no-brainer. But when the garage takes up a good 13 feet of the toy hauler, we are left with about 27 feet of camper. We do miss having a kitchen table. Storage is lackluster. The fifth wheel halls great going down the road compared to a bumper pull trailer, we have to give it that. But at the end of the day, we decided that it’s time to look for something different. We brainstormed, and decided that a diesel pusher motorhome might be the perfect compromise. We can use it to camp, we can pull other transportation, or we can haul a trailer with tractors on it for the shows. Our search began. We kept our search radius within a couple states. Wisconsin to Kentucky to Pennsylvania seemed to be a pretty good range. We built a spreadsheet. We listed all of the things that we required, we wished for, the pros and cons of each, how many people can sleep, if it needs tires, price, distance away, etc. 19 days ago, an ad pops up on a Facebook group for this RV in Reno, Nevada! The ad was seven minutes old, and the seller’s profile kind of looked sketchy. I told Mrs. P, that I didn’t want to converse with the seller personally. She just looked like trouble. But if it’s something we wanted to pursue, she was more than able to contact the seller herself. I just did not want to be associated with her sex appeal driven profile. After some brief discussions on the phone, we decided to put a hefty deposit on the RV, and find flights! We bought an RV!

4 pointsI'd guess it is holding some of the slop out of the track bar. Probably cut down on the amount of 'wander' the bus had. I'll agree that a drive through our western states is enjoyable. Mrs. 8n and I drove from San Fransisco to the middle of Missouri this spring. Took the I-70 route through the mountains.
-
4 pointsFunny you'd bring that up.... Yesterday Trina and I were sitting in the living room watching TV. She looks over at me and says, "We gotta get your truck done. I can pull the camper. You can pull the trailer with the truck and bring six or seven tractors." I said "NINE. The trailer will hold 6. I'm gonna build the truck to carry 3." I don't think she realized how much space that is going to create.

4 pointsHopefully they don’t get confused…or combined…people do weird things when half awake. Not me but I’ve heard stories about other people.

4 pointsLove the travel trailer Eric and it's about exactly what we are thinking about. Maybe not the BH model though. Pros and cons there. We've camped all our lives and had everything from tarps draped over the open rear end of a station wagon to the latest one we had, a 38' triple axle, triple slide fifth wheel. It was an apartment on wheels but the best memories are the tent camping and the smaller travel trailers. We do like the idea on the interior conveniences especially as we get have gotten older. One story always come to mind. It was in the 80's and we had a new 25' Nomad BH. It was great with the two little girls. One day I was talking with some coworkers when one of them, Fred, decided to get on his soap box about 'wheeled campers'. He was a surly guy who got on a lot of folks nerves with his ranting and he certainly got going that morning. WHEELED CAMPERS AREN'T CAMPING, HARD WALLS, INDOOR PLUMBING, AIR CONDITIONING, IRRITATING THIS, IRRITATING THAT.....BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. I let him rant on a while and finally spoke up. Fred, you know what really irritated me one time? What's that? We were at a state park in southern Indiana one time. We found out the hard way that the voltage was so low that the microwave wouldn't pop our popcorn. Now......that's irritating. BTW, microwaves don't like 80 volts.

3 pointsI'm past due for an update. The paint is cured enough and it was decal time. I've been anxious for this. I decided to go with stock decals from Terry. As any of you that have used his decals knows they are idiot proof. Soooooo easy to apply with no bubbles. I still have a couple minor decals to put on. The headlight tub got a quick coat of silver and pop riveted in place. 5000k led bulbs. I don't need taillights so reflectors covered the holes. I got this seat with no tears but it needed a good cleaning. I'd say it cleaned up pretty good. The electric fuel pump is installed under the seat. About all I need to do is the electrical, throttle and choke controls and the usual odds and ends. In the background of the first picture you'll see some mufflers sitting there. Big block and a small block Nelsons and a stack with a flipper cap thingy. I'm not a big stack person but for some reason it's calling me. I've been pondering what chore this tractor will have and I've pretty well decided on getting rid of the 314H and slapping the 42"sd deck on this one. This had a 42"rd but it needs work. I'm thinking that will be a project for this winter.

3 points@Pullstart, that is one fine looking rig in spite of its shortcomings. Too bad you and Taylor couldn't has devoted more time to sightseeing. During my first "Retirement" (I was 30 and took a summer off to travel) I went from Florida to Arizona then up to Utah and east on Interstate 80 / 90 all the way to Massachusetts and New Hampshire returning to Florida before the snow flew living in a 23' travel trailer. Spent several days at national parks throughout the western states. When I was camping I would unload the Yamaha 360 dirt bike and take in the local sites. Every time I see a Ken Burns documentary about the national parks it brings back so many fond memories.

3 pointsWe used to get campers towed in off of the NYS Thruway all the time. Awnings not secured and tearing the sides off. TV antenna's blown off and leaving an un-scheduled skylight. AC's torn off leaving a bigger un-scheduled skylight. The best was a 35 ft. Holiday Rambler travel trailer with all of the axles ripped out from underneath. We had to pick the back end with a forklift and used a tractor with a ball on the 3 pt, on the front to get it in the shop. RV Tip of the day: Whilst camping and yo have the awning out and it rains. When putting the awning back, don't stand underneath the arm being lowered first unless you need a bath!

3 pointsHad my post surgery checkup today. Good news! He said I was healing very well and I can start working on heavier tasks but don't over do it and proceed with caution for another eight weeks. When completely healed It would be ok to lift 100 lbs! I have not been able to lift over 50 lbs since my first hernia surgery in 1998.

3 pointsMy parents had boats growing up & my uncle had campers so we would always go camping at the lake together. Typically my mom & aunt would tow pop up to campground sometime Friday. My dad & uncle usually showed up after work with the boat. I remember piling in station wagon with my sister & cousins, plenty of adult drinking, trailer mirrors clipped to fenders- Lol. One time I unclipped the top of trailer. We got on freeway & trailer raised up! Let's just say that Friday night I paid the price! I then started tent camping at age 17 again. Bought my 1st Sea Doo. My girlfriend would lie to her parent's bout where she was at for weekend. We would go to the Lake Erie Islands camping & jetskiing almost every summer weekend. Once I got married ended up getting a pop up which I really liked. Easy to tow, etc. Later moved to a hybrid trailer w/slide. (pictured) By that time I was a single dad w/full custody of my kids but we still went camping at least 2x a month. Kids are grown now but still talk about the fun times we had camping. Girlfriend & I have considered maybe getting a pop-up.........
-
3 pointsIMHO. This is a THOROUGHLY UNACCEPTABLE situation and the BBB should be notified along with scathing reviews online. ... AFTER your tractor is returned UNHARMED.
-
3 pointsOne test you can do and is seldom mentioned. Turn the ignition switch to the run position without the engine running and check the voltage across the battery posts. Now move the red test lead to the DC+ terminal on the regulator. You should have the same voltage reading. If not the same voltage reading the charge current has no path back to the battery. Find out why.

3 pointsCampers bring back memories. Horrid ones from my time as a mechanic at an RV dealer. We had a customer's old Winnie that went thru a flood. For some reason he wanted us to fix it instead of buying another one with the insurance money. We did a beautiful job on it only for a month later when a drunk ran him off the road. My favorite camping outing was with my wife, son and our 3 dogs. 2 beagles and a lab in an old pop up. The dogs hogged the blankets on a cold night. The elder beagle got into the snacks and ate the milkyway and 3 musketeers bars!

2 pointsFinally after almost two months ... boys showed up yesterday for hook up. Guys were real nice and knew what they were doing. Didn't work real fast but consistent. Lots of joking around and banter. Not so much after Cindy got their life stories. She's a people person ya know ... Welding on the pitless adapter. The welder was pretty cool mounted right in the truck and run by hydraulics off a pump that was PTO run by the truck diesel. Got real lucky and found the house pipe right away. Pretty deep but the excavator was big enough. I'd take one you was to give it to me. I connected on to the existing line to existing pump and brought it to the surface in case a possible future lawn sprinkler application. Getting ready to drop the pump on 140' of pipe. Caseing ended up at 240 ft. and water to the top so a minor artesian, He had to put on a water tight cap per code. Pump is a Grundfos 1 HP constant pressure. Only 3" in diameter.

2 pointsWe six kids were in the pop-up and the parental units were in the back of the Travelall (similar to a modern Suburban). Wise parents. Watching the ferocious bear search for food from the steel box while the kids watched from the canvas box.
