6 pointsBaby Boomers Recognition Day is celebrated every year on August 17. We couldn’t be more thrilled to honor a generation of people who are among the largest, if not the richest, in the country. Baby boomers (1946 – 1964), or simply ‘boomers,’ refers to the demographic born after the Silent Generation (1928 – 1945) and before Generation X (1965 – 1980). This generation, which is now between the ages of 61 and 79, represents those born during the post-World War II baby boom. In 1946, almost three million infants were born in the United States, breaking the country’s birth record. Although the phrase has been used beyond the United States, its cultural connotations and demographic context differ. They were named for the increasing birth rate that occurred following the end of World War II. The baby boom during that time was caused by the economic upswing and a desire for normalcy following the war and the Great Depression. Theirs was an eventful era; early baby boomers were prime instigators of cultural movements like Woodstock and the Summer of Love. During an era of significant societal change, they were also powerful forces to be reckoned with. They had to deal with topics such as the Vietnam War and came off as mostly liberal; early baby boomers were more liberal than their later counterparts. The baby boomers lived through a number of significant events. They were the first generation to have Barbie dolls and to receive polio immunizations. The first manned space mission and the first lunar landing were both witnessed by boomers. “F Bomb Alert.” This YouTube video has gratuitous use of the “F BOMB” at the end, hit the mute button before 2:01 to protect sensitive ears.

6 pointsI've got a couple Lexmark style decks that are modded to work on a Wheel Horse, but both still need a couple tweaks before full time use, and I just haven't had time for much tinkering lately. Hopefully things will return to some form of normal in the next few weeks... But I like the 48SD Wheel Horse decks. Unfortunately I gave my best two away some time ago in a trade. I didn't realize how bad of shape the last one was really in... This is the most pitted deck I have ever owned. The top is actually much worse that the underside. Not to mention the fact that someone tried to mow over a fire hydrant with it. The blades had cut a 3 inch wide hole out of the front, and contacted both sides in the back. I beat everything out straight, welded a reinforcement bar on the front and patched all the holes, as well as welding up the spots where it had rusted all the way through. I also welded in flat bar across the back where the carrier attaches. Also had to make a new middle scalp wheel carrier behind the additional reinforcement. Just for giggles, I cut the outer 3 inches of overhang from the discharge. The blade now is only 1/2 inch underneath the edge. Most newer decks are set up this way now. I hope that allows for better clippings dispersal. I added some reinforcement there as well. I'm not the biggest fan of POR-15, but this deck needed some additional protection underneath. So it got two coats. I got all the rust out of the pits on top, but they are deep. Hopefully I'll get a couple seasons out of it, or until I get my other decks sorted out.

6 pointsOne thing I have enjoyed on Red Square that is probably not as prevalent on other tractor sites is PRAYER. We frequently offer prayer for members and their families in times of trouble.
-
6 pointsSpare front axle cleaned up and painted. I will do the same to the one from this 416 and use the best one on final assembly.

5 pointsSo yesterday I met up with @Pullstart to swap a couple tractors... I'm looking at another restoration, only this one runs, has good tires, and overall seems in pretty good shape. LED lights even work... In keeping with my budget (think Ramon noodles), I have already fixed the seat at no cost. Will be changing the oil in motor and trans, doing a thorough cleaning, replacing the shifter boot, and then seeing what direction I go from there... This one may just stay in its work clothes... Some pics:

5 pointsRust-Oleum Regal Red seems to be the choice of many Wheel Horse owners. As far as the engine, the only area that gets hot enough to discolor the paint is around the exhaust. Decals from redoyourhorse.com (our vendor Vinylguy), may be a little pricy, but they are good, and as far as I know, they may be your only source for some one of a kind decals like dash panels and engine spec plates.

4 pointsLuckily, they only go about 7mph... Even with Wheel Horse brakes, most accidents can be avoided so long as I am not the driver...

4 pointsThis is truly amazing. I can understand why you all are so proud of what you have built and continue to nurture here.

4 pointsI brought an RJ home today. 5 hour round trip. Older restoration, hasn’t ran in years, piston is free. I’ll work on this in my spare time …. The gentleman threw in what he said was an original fabricated slot hitch. Can anyone confirm this? I know the front wheels are not correct, saw that right away. Its granddaughter approved !

3 pointsI spray just about everything with Rusty Regal Red. I have never sprayed it through a gun. My gun jobs have all been "Automotive paint. sometimes a single stage enamel and sometimes a basecoat/clearcoat mix. On the rattle can spray jobs, when I spray my last coat of color, I grab a can of rusty Chrystal Clear and immediately spray a coat of clear on the color. Then wait about 15 min then another coat of clear. Cuts the drying time by a ton. I spray engines the same way and they hold up well. The heads I use Duplicolor engine paint with a coat of clear the same way. As far as color goes, everyone sees red differently. some folks like Rusty Sunrise Red. But to me that looks too orangey especially under lights. Buy a can of each and spray a chunk of metal from something scrap and look at it under natural sunlight then decide what you like.
-
3 pointsYa gets what ya paid for...... Rustoleum is a good "backyard" type of product - but - you need to wait about a month in order to apply the decals. It has a very slow cure time. Some folks buy the paint in quarts, mixing it with a hardening catalyst. That is best applied with a HVLP spraygun. Having bought several times from Vinylguy, I was never diaappointed....

3 pointsSpare frame has been painted and is ready to be used on this tractor. I want this one because it has the longer foot rest support bars used with the early foot rests. The new style foot rests with the rubber pads have shorter bars. Frame set aside for now.

3 pointsNice, I was on the road 5-1/2 hours yesterday to bring this one home. Same, we talked quite a while, tractors, family, life. Not the farthest I ever traveled for a Wheel Horse. Once did a 1050 mile overnight round trip for a pristine 520-H.

3 pointsI think I am going to trim down the plastic Wheelhorse piece about 1/4" so the edges match the lights.
-
3 pointsToday was paint day, I was also getting used to and dialing in my new gravity feed Husky paint gun. I got it in June for my birthday. The panels overall are going to need a little sanding and touch up especially the rear pan and guards as they were the first thing painted. The hood turned out great and no runs overall. It’s a learning curve. It beats using a spray can too.

3 pointsFinally brought the 416 home from the mother-in-laws place. When I got home I thought I would drive the GT1600 onto the trailer to ensure two tractors would fit. They do. Trailer dropped down 1" (from 4" fender to tire to 3" fender to tire) with the weight of the tractors so I am happy with that as well.

2 pointsYou are a master negotiator. Give me one of your and I will trade it for another of yours any day of the week. Rylee has grown up so fast, you can be proud of her.

2 pointsAnd you learned a lot along the way and we created a thread that others can benefit from. Winner all around.

2 pointsadded this to my 3 decks in detailing function , eliminating spindle belt bounce . , that is caused with lubrication failure , making spindles hang up for a second , and make belt bounce . just a single 3/8 hole in deck is needed , like a thread free bolt to enhance pulley movement , washer at base , washer at top and elastic lock nut . very slight belt push , makes it work as it should . that long unsupported run , also is the reason for original slide area wipe out of of metal / nylon spring tension area . often refer to smooth / easy deck engagement , no clutch squealing . had to get fed up with original set up , no belt wear , splitting . etc . years and time on this , of course . lucas green chassis grease in every related bearing , spin up is ridiculously smooth / quiet easy . decks are also , rot free , pete

2 pointsi came upon a few older neglected and abused heavily pitted decks that looked like that shell. Frankly, the wire wheel, or a pneumatic scaler, or a 90 degree disc pad all work only modestly - - but for me when they are pitted that extensively it's worth the $$ to have professionally sand blasted to remove all the corrosion in the recessed pits ----- then i am confident primer then paint will be more effective with longer life instead of painting over the rust pits that still have some corrosion in them.

2 pointsSome time back around 2010 my cousin had a spot on Kyle Petty's pit crew. Gave it up for a girl who ditched him a few months later. He's still pissed.

2 pointsSo, Filly has lost her transmission, and a 3 speed from a Commando 800 bolted to her. Sylvia brought it home from the second annual Pullstart Stables Plow Day and Meet and Greet and had his fun tooling around with his spin on a Star Wars character and a stapler, with the agreement that when he is done playing, I’ll have it back. Filly is heading home now. @SylvanLakeWH met up with me about halfway between our places and did some trading with me this weekend. Yes, I traded my tractor, for my tractor

2 pointsWell the teardown has started. Hood and fender removed. Hood set aside for now. These parts are cleaned up. You can see the bends in the fender that the PO did to clearance the oversize tires. I will attempt to straighten these.
-
2 pointsKeep the deck clean and it may well last a long time now that you have breathed new life into it. Good job !

2 pointsIf anyone has any doubts about this being the best community around, check out the Max Nunn and David Star/Howard stories. https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/search/?q="max nunn"&updated_after=any&sortby=relevancy Another one to read is about David Star, who donated a kidney to Howard @857 horse

2 points@kpinnc Well said, I have used my wife’s account to access a few Wheel Horse sites on FB. I was amazed at some of the responses there. Some were downright rude and others were giving out information that was incorrect. I never commented on any of it and decided to just come back here where the people are nice, knowledgeable and we even have a good time poking fun at each other. @Ed Kennell @wallfish @squonk @SylvanLakeWH @ebinmaine seem to be the ring leaders in the poking fun part. Oh and very good with other words of wisdom!😂😂😂

2 pointsMarv that's a Cub style muffler. Readily available on the interwebs. I've used those here too. Good sound. Relatively quiet. Deep tone. I switched to the smaller Gravely style which also has good tone and is a smaller more easily adapted piece.
