Next was the 1973 10/8 speed. This one is locked up tight! Pulled the shroud…not as nice as the C-81 . Really packed! Found some fur and whatnot was jammed between the starter gear and flywheel, she freed up once that was removed! This one will need more attention before a battery goes in it for sure. But not seized is a win for today

It was a decent show. Kinda clashes with the WHS in PA so hard to say when I’ll go again. Next year it’s probably the same weekend I think. Even with iffy weather it’s still good to just “hang with the guys”, bust chops etc… @wallfish

We went to this show yesterday but the threat of rain and the little bit of drizzle kept some people away. @Sparky grabbed a bunch more pics but I got a couple. This little steam train was pretty cool.

Had sometime to mess with the 2 rigs I hauled home on Friday. First was the C-81: Pulled the shroud, pretty clean and no mouse house. Disconnected the fuel line from the fuel pump (tank probably has nasty stuff). Checked the oil. Put a battery in it and a shot of carb cleaner in the carb throat and she fired off @ri702bill haven’t forgotten about you IMG_2834.mov

This show was a rain out Thur. and Fri., but the sun saved Saturday afternoon.

Mike got some better pics and the exhibitor sign explaining what this is. I scrambled to get a shot while he drove it by.

Just thinking back about my 1257, back when I helped my dad get it, back when he had his own place to work on stuff in his garage before moving in a smaller apartment building. I want to say it was the summer of 2009 when my dad got it. Then I took over it in the spring of 2016 when he moved in the building. He took it apart and cleaned it up then painted it before I got it, I put it back together and added/changed some things throughout the years. Definitely a big difference between then and now looking back at a couple old pictures. Next year I really want to make it to the Big Show as things keep coming up every year. I’d really like to meet some of you guys as I’ve learned quite a bit on the forum from everything that’s been posted on here. It’s the friendliest and best forum I’ve ever been on.

Trina and I and a friend went out to a medium sized hike yesterday. Approximately 6 miles. Elevation gain well over 1000 feet. Great calorie burning. Excellent woods hike. No real long distance views so it's not super popular with most folks. Big Rock Cave is a literal pile of giant rocks that form a few walkable and crawlable openings. Jungle gym!!

Guy at the BS had four of the old style mufflers for a real good price so Achto and I cleaned him out. Swapped out the strait out silver one for a down and out. Thought black looked better. First oil change as long as she's in.

About ho many tooth picks do you figure it would take to build one?

And this tiny little display. They were spinning it with an electric motor to show the mechanics of it but it wasn't running, the engine noise is my tractor IMG_0904.MOV

Never mind, I figured it out with a rubber mallet, it flew about four feet after the third whack.

Good call on that one as that's what you thought it might be. And it's something about those little 8s as it seems they all want to run

We had a little hiccup at the show, getting the kick start mechanism to work. It was free wheeling, drag starting the tractor became a no go once the belt got a little oil on it, so it once again was a Won’tstart.

No rides on the Steel Horse. And the three local shows Steam-O-Rama, Hershaul Park, and Fawn Grove are more like 4.1 miles from home.

National Waffle Iron Day is celebrated on June 29 every year as a way to celebrate the invention of this amazing device that allows millions of Americans to enjoy their breakfast. Waffle irons are found across homes in the United States and are used to make many varieties of waffles, ranging from the simple waffle to the fancier and more modern takes on this favorite breakfast food.

Having been born n raised right there local I've been to that show quite a few times. Always was pretty good for such a small town and financially challenged area. My mom still lives right there not a mile away.

Seat, rear pan, and gas tank removal. Twofold purpose, to install a rear rock shaft kit that I put together at the big show, had to paint a few parts before installing. Secondly to cure the fuel starvation issue that has been plaguing me since the second grass cutting of the season, gas tank had all kinds of dirt in it… The filter screen came off the valve and clogged the valve. When I went to drain the gas tank, gas only dripped out of the fuel line… I poured about a half pint of mineral spirits in it sloshed it around a bit and now it is currently evaporating any liquid that is left inside. I will then blow out the tank with compressed air. It also gave me a chance to clean up the topside of the transmission.

Well Dummy, maybe it's just empty! LOL Sounds MUCH better when there's some gas in the tank

Been busy puttering all day. A little o' this. Some o' that.... Trina's major project with her momma was to start getting firewood split and stacked.

When Achto or I go look at one and it doesn't run or drive it's usually immediately a $100 tractor unless proven other wise. If it's a Kohler or even a Briggs and the piston goes up and down it's a plus. We know we can get it running in short order. Never fails to make me wonder why the seller wouldn't get it running to make it worth more $$. Ran when parked means nothing you guys know that. I guess some folks don't get that.

The dark discolored areas are, or may have been, wet. All that buildup can be quite corrosive on the metal parts.... Maybe the mice had good taste and avoided green tractors??

It was full 600 miles ago, there’s no way it’s empty now! I have since found a cap seal/baffle so it doesn’t just fall out the top whilst bouncing about.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. Did you take a ride on the Steel Horse?

In sledding yes. What most folks forget is to stop and look around once in a while. We're all about the HIKE. Too many people are all about the destination.

This starter was in a large box of parts I got from a member by Pony Express from the Big Show. I'm guess its for a vertical shaft engine! Ok experts out there, what does it fit? If someone needs/can use it, let me know.

Got that right KP! That a real possibility but not a deal breaker ... we have the fix. I wouldn't be afraid of it. Not much to go on pic but looks to be complete and unmolested. Strait sheet metal as near as one can tell. Bet it would clean up nice.

After 60 plus years of filling small gas tanks, I have mastered the art of only spilling about a 1/4 cup full. For me, that's perfection. Just don't fill them running, or over the grass. At age 75 I find lifting a 5 gallon can near impossible without an incident. Therefore, I transfer gas into several 1 or 2 gallon cans. Much easier and more control.

Thanks All, You've confirmed what I was thinking. I don't need a hulk hanging around the property reminding me it needs my attention. And certainly not a hard core collector. I'll pass.

As Sparky asked, a little more info on the engine model would help. Pictures would also help. May I suggest you use gas in a squirt bottle, carb clearer, or brake clean as a starting fluid. Diesel starting fluid is too explosive for the small engines and can damage them.

Just remember that's more of a lawn tractor. Light duty. My suit your needs fine. Just for information. They're around. I have a two-stage here that would fit a 300 400 but I've considered selling quite a few times. @AHS is located closer to Bangor. He runs into these tractors and or implements more often than I do. There are several of us on here that are fairly regular posters. @MainelyWheelhorse @Stepney @JCM @OldWorkHorse @Oldskool

I've never seen anything about it but there probably is. I just go by feel. Engaged firmly but not forced. I don't want any clutch slippage. I mow through some pretty heavy stuff at times and with the deck belt adjusted properly every once in a while, a combination of the grass/weeds and ground speed will cause a little chirp of the drive belt. Not much and I back down immediately but the clutch holds firm with no slippage.

Somewhere I remember something about having ten thousands gap in the clutch to face area when disengaged. Might be a good starting point. I like running the engagement rod up trough the cam lever. Gives a little more throw and won't pop out of engagement as easy. If your clutch is covered with grease a good cleaning with brake clean helps too. Of course the older clutches have rivets and it is easy to tell wear. The bonded newer ones can be run longer or until the rod is out of adjustment.

Have to rename your trailer. " Ed's Buckets and Benches "

The bearings in the PTO shell and throwout can be lubed easiest if it is disassembled. Note, though that a good high-heat grease, applied VERY sparingly is the way to go. Grease that runs out of the bearing and onto the clutch surface will quickly ruin the clutch face.

Illegal in many (most?) states to live trap and relocate. Considered a nuisance. If not legal to shoot (urban suburban area) then This is how I deal with them. cheap and 100% effective... They have a socialist mentality... what's mine is mine and what's yours is mine... once there's a den, their kin, neighbors, acquaintances, passerby and whomever is a member of the species will reoccupy unless consistently and permanently removed...

I would stay away from one unless I had Pullstart's time & money . I mean they are a cool tractor but definitely a labor of love. This nice one came up for sale on MP & fairly local for a princely sum of 3500 but has a deck, tiller & blade. Definitely for hardcore collectors only. If it runs & drive a wouldn't part out. It would take alot of time to sell parts and would guess much would end up as scrap.

At one time we had five . Now down to three and some parts tractors. I have three extra transmissions, a couple mower decks and other assorted 953/1054 parts. I have one I want to get restored. I have one with a 50 inch sickle bar mower made for the 154/953 wider frame. one has a Work Horse 1054 decal. They were produced from 1962 to 1966. They were still listed in a Wheel Horse sales brochure in 1966. This was the first 48 inch mower deck used on a garden tractor. The hydraulic pump and lift were great for the heavy attachments. The Ross steering gear in the early 953’s was also used by other tractor manufacturers and cussed wheel horse to develop a fan gear of later 953/1054 models This was my dads favorite Wheel Horse tractor!
