7 pointsWell oiled machine? Waiting for some touch up. Got a blower and plow with it. No 3 point.

7 pointsDropped a really tall “standing-dead” ash tree yesterday…GT-1600 hauled it all after cutting up to the front yard to be picked up.

5 pointsHello and thanks for adding me to your group. I was wounding how many different years of parts are on my Suburban obviously it’s not original. I’ve been trying to contact a fellow on the web named VINSRJ since I use to own a few back in the 90s but we’re lost in a fire. I am getting back into them and was wondering when is the big wheel horse show in south mountain. Thanks Shawn

4 pointsI tried to use a rock shaft but there was not enough room. Some modification to the steering box, a couple of u joints and some 3/4 rod I have a solution. I had to take .015 off the Ross steering shaft to fit in the u joints. Now I need to make the drag link.

4 points10/26/1959 They skipped the letter I because it could be interpreted as a 1. That casting is from late in 1959. Most likely it was an early 400 tractor. The side plates for the suburban are different than the RJ, whereas the brake band tab would be different. On a 45 deg angle for the suburban. Vertical straight up and down tab on the RJ. Of coarse it's always possible parts are changed over the years but...who knows. I can see the 45 tab on your trans. Think I found the back of your hood LOL It's a 400 cut off in just about that exact same spot

4 pointsAlthough it might be early unfortunately I put tractors away for winter. Fuel drained, batteries removed, etc. Just got too much going on with work & my elderly parents needing more help. Once leaves really start to accumulate I'll take mower deck off 654 & install plow. I'll mow with Troy Bilt 33 walk behind- it mulches. Winter project is my dad's Bultaco motorcycle in pics. He bought it new in 1970 when he came home from Vietnam. Hasn't run in bout 35yrs however it was properly stored in his basement. Should be easy to get running & only will need a few small things cosmetically. My goal is to have it completed by spring time. I'd like my dad to be able to ride it one last time.

3 pointsTwo E-141s and the SL&WHN RR are on their way to the St. Louis area... Perhaps @wh500special will rebrand it the SL&WHW RR since St. Louis is West more than North... Many thanks for transport services and great to meet you Logan @LtHorses1114

3 points@ShawnsRJ back to the club! Right, wrong, or indifferent, they are all fun to cruise and work.
-
3 pointsReplaced the light switch and got new throttle and choke knobs today. Decided it was as good a time as any to refurbish the dash plate. Satin black Rustoleum and a silver marker from my wife's craft drawer. I only ordered a choke knob, but Toro sent me both knobs!

3 pointsThe frame and trans is 1960. The 1960 400 and 550 are the same tractor except for the engines and electric start stuff Kohler K91 is correct but probably a replacement engine The foot rests are 1960 Looks like the gas was changed and probably not an original tank. The cap is sitting up too high The front wheels have been changed. Looks like new tires on wheelbarrow rims. The bracket on the front is for a dozer blade. The big show in PA is always the weekend after Father's Day at the end of June

2 pointsSay what you want about Elon Musk, well he says what he wants about everyone else. Lol But watch that super heavy booster rocket come in to land, or rather to be caught by a tower. Wow! First time! Now that was impressive my friends....

2 pointsMuch of the “history” of these gentlemen has been colored by their successes and in some cases avoids their foibles. Edison and Ford, in particular, were hard nosed and, at times, pugnacious. Both took great advantage of their wealth. Both climbed atop the shoulders of expertise they observed, hired, or stole BUT both had the talent to see the “big picture” and leveraged what they had to bring products to market that would sell wildly.

2 pointsHere's a 36” Belt RD that’s listed in the classifieds and it has the metal “skirt” on the back

2 pointsIn my opinion Elon Musk is our modern day Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Nikola Tesla, Eli Whitney, George Eastman and wright Brothers all rolled up in one marvelous package. He has improve existing science and provided the United States with a new spirit of entrepreneurship. Rather than thinking big government agencies like NASA and the Transportation Department are the answer he has surpassed their goals and risked his own money and reputation in the process. Few people have risen from an obscure mapping and directory company founder to create an innovative transportation empire which is leading the world's transition to autonomous spacecraft. While the government was funding the Boeing Starliner at $ 90 million per seat, Elon Musk succeeded in launching the SpaceX Crew Dragon for $ 55 million per seat. Musk's rather small company outshined the big boys and saved NASA.

2 pointsOr check with your local Toro dealer, though they can be really proud of their parts.
-
2 pointsSame here. I kept the longer 6" spindles when I replaced all the 6" wheels with 8" wheels. More clearance for the plow frames under the front axle.
-
2 pointsOk sorry i made a mistake all good now. The tow valve was still in freewheel position. I'm going to go slap myself now.

2 pointsImplement paint is really Hard once it cures. I have painted many a boat trailer with it & it is pretty tough stuff. surface prep is key no matter what you use. I prefer to use POR15 as it is really glossy & Extremely Hard. It can go right over rust too but I prefer to treat the metal as best I can as the stuff is really expensive. The other thing I really like about POR15 is that you cann put just about anything over it. I use 2 coats to protect the metal then rattle can whatever color I want over top of it. Haven't had any trouble with rust on anything I have done this way. There are other products that will bond with rust out there but the really good 1s are almost cost prohibitive at $100.00 ++ per gallon. I have used 2 of them & ya need to pour out what ya need into a separate container because ANY amount of rust will cause the Whole Can to "kick" If you are brushing it on which I prefer to do as it makes a can of POR15 last a good long time as long as you don't shake it. Stir it only read the lable as it says, do Not shake.... Stir it Only!! I liked the idea above (from peter lena) about oiling the paint for that "old period correct look" & there's Nothing wrong with that idea. If you're Dead set on shiny new & durable I would use POR15 as it has never let me down. It';s not cheap either. That's my 2 cents beause I went with POR15 & there's only 2 cents left...... & ya know what they say about opinions......

2 points@8ntruck @ebinmaine Some electronics cleaner and some compressed air seemed to undo the WD-40. The hydro lever seems to have better resistance, but it was too late to fire it up for a test run. I'm tempted take things apart and clean it up better. Can you still get the plastic (or nylon) piece? It looks like it would certainly be a wear item at some point.

2 pointsHe's on bookface I believe. Or, Note him on his youtube channel maybe? I see Vin at the local get togethers and engine shows all the time but he doesn't frequent here much anymore.

2 pointsMy Dad took our whole family of eight on an outing to Luzerne, PA (whoo hoo!) to test drive an early 60’s Econoline van as a possible family car. At the dealer, we piled in and off we went . On the first serious hill (and there are a LOT in PA around the Susquehanna river valley), it stalled and even in 1st gear would not climb. Dad had do a reverse K-turn and we went right back to the dealer. Eventually we got the first of several International Travelalls--these were precursors of the Chevy Suburban.
-
2 points@Handy Don Oh, ok it’s basically a flap that covers the outlet.
-
1 pointIt will be for someone else…and I have plenty more to drop and cut
-
1 pointYep, because the rod’s cross section is equal to πr^2 (pi times the radius squared!) 👍

1 pointFew if any of these great inventors started with nothing and invented an entirely new item without assistance or a base to work from. Musk probably didn't do all of the engineering on SpaceX but had the vision to hire good people and not get in the way of their efforts. Here is a bit of information on his formal education. In 1990, he entered Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. Two years later, he transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League university in Philadelphia, where he earned two degrees: a Bachelor of Arts in physics, and a Bachelor of Science in economics from the university's Wharton School I dare say he has exceeded the accomplishments of the majority of his classmates who went on to Master's and Doctoral Degrees.

1 pointI don’t know what you are talking about that spindle looks perfect to me! all kidding aside I have seen them repaired by a welder and then reworked to the roundness needed. Hope you can save it. IMG_8857.webp

1 pointSeveral of the nearby communities in my area got ravaged by the hurricane so I've been spending most of my free time volunteering the past little bit, I was finally able to get back to wrenching on the A-100 today... or perhaps I should say dismantling it. I've been taking lots of pictures, tagging pieces and storing bolts and various pieces in marked Zip Lock bags - just my way of doing projects, especially in cases where I'm in uncharted waters like this one. I'm about 75% done, next step will be to start cleaning things up and getting into painting which I'm excited for! Jonathan

1 pointI did see one online that was green. And an article on here that says they were dark green with just a wheel horse sticker for identification.

1 pointI have done Quite a lot of sand blasting, using a cabinet & a pressure pot set up with a dinosaur of an old ingersol tow behind compressor. Moisture is your biggest enemy. I did some Electrical work for a guy in exchange for 2 Industiral Air dryers. These were the really nice, large 1s (about $300-$400 each) I bought reducing fittings to make adapters for using a dryer at the blasting cabinet. Once i had the dryers in the mix, 1 at the compressor outlet & 1 at the pot inlet, I Never had ANY problems no matter what media i used. I would go to menards, home depot, lowes & other big box stores & get the manager to deal with me on all the bottom of the pallet bags of various media, Those are the 1s with holes n tears in them that won't & often don't sell, So they will more often than not actually take what ever you offer them on it & even direct a forklift to load that pallet on your truck This really depends on who ya get on what day but once you find a smart manager that wants the floor space back & to be rid of damaged stock that probably won't sell, you now have a good source. I was successful with this about 80% of the time.. I saved a ton of money on blasting media that way. Yeah it is a pain to deal with sometimes but twice the media for 1/3 the price is worth it to me as I am short 1 money tree in my back yard. My former neighbor owns the equipment. I have blasted several vehicle body panels, Willys jeep frames, truck frames, engine blocks, boats, trailers, mini bike frames n fenders ( mostly Carl Heald Mini Bikes & the Super Trykes because, well, theyre RED just like Wheel Horse,,, Imagine that...) Sand Blasting is not glamorous work & propper PPE is a Must, Eyes, ears, Face shield or a helmet, long sleevs, boots, Gloves & pants ....there are hoods for full mellon protection available also. For a pot set up the bigger the better when it comes to air supply from a towed unit is the best "no waiting for air to build up" but that is not realistic if your just doing a couple parts but if you're doing multiple large pieces or doing restoration work on the scale we were doing it made sense to buy that dinosaur towable compressor the lower frame was the fuel tank but it was all rusted out so we just dropped the fuel line into a 5 gallon gas can & ran it that way. I miss that machine because we never had to wait for air to build up. The former neighbor sold that compressor after I moved because it was not getting used much. I still have 1 dryer, the other I left with him for the cabinet because in the summer, the condensation will cause all kinds of problems, winter is not so bad. A dryer will really help no matter which set up you run. The dryers are what will make or break your day when it comes to actually accomplishing work vs clearing clogs & jams in the outlet for the sand. Trust me, I learned the hard way . Hope that helps

1 pointI've been running a 5 lug front end on my C160-8 Cinnamon Horse for several years. Works excellent. I have enough hubs and trailer spindles to set up two more.
-
1 pointThese are just what I had for pics on my phone. If you need measurements let me know. The rear straps around the axle I cut out of heavy box tube, and welded the nuts to the front so it's easier to mount. You would have to pull tires to get at pins or nuts on otherwise. There is a 5/8 bolt that goes in from the bottom to put tension on that. This kind of shows the front subframe, it's an original wheel horse part.

1 pointArchery deer season opened yesterday. In my tree for two hours before heading for the Steam-O-Rama. 1 fox 1 groundhog 5 graytails 6 doe Not bad for the first 2 hours.

1 pointI’ll go first. These are Carlisle All-Trails. One is 23x8 and the other is 23x10.5. They do not offer a 9 or 9.5 wide tire. Can’t really comment on todays cost as I bought the 10.5’s many many years ago online for about $80 each. The 8.0’s came on a machine C-100 I bought as a parts machine. The brand new rear Carlisle’s were what caught my eye. Excellent traction! They do not shred my lawn unless I spin them. They are both a 4 ply tire so just a bit stiffer than a 2 ply. I feel that less plies equal better traction. Height: I measured them with 6.5 pounds in the narrow ones and 4.5 in the wide ones. Narrows are 22.5” and the wides are 22” tall. This measurement was taken sitting in the pavement with all the tractor weight on them plus the wide ones have 75#’s of cast iron on each wheel. Narrows are mounted on standard 7” wheels and the wide ones are on 8.5” wheels I love these and would recommend them to anyone wanting better traction than turfs and something less aggressive than AG’s. Edit: forgot about width. The 8.0’s are actually more like 8.5” wide. Again, height and width are affected by the wheel used.
