8 pointsI picked up a little bit of bling today. As a mentor for the local high school's robotics team, I got invited to the fall activities assembly for the presentation of the world championship rings because we were part of the winning alliance for the 2024 FIRST Robotics World Championship meet last May. This is a world wide competition. This year there were about 3600 active teams world wide. About 600 teams qualified for the World Championship competition in Huston last May. 8 alliances of 4 teams each competed in a double elimination format to determine the world champions. Our goal last season was to be one of those 32 teams - never dreamed that we would win. The students were heavily involved with the ring's design. That ring is heavy and a real clunker to wear. It stops my ring finger from completely curling. Guess I'll just have to put up with it.

8 pointsToday I remover the dozer blade from the 418-C and installed the leaf blower in preparation for the annual deluge of leaves we have. When I built the blower I used an eight inch round air duct elbow to direct the air flow but replaced it with a shorter rectangular sheet metal piece. Works as well and doesn't stick out nearly as far.

6 pointsWorking on a little magnetic flag holder for the 414-8 hood. A few more tweaks and I think this will work perfectly!

5 pointsI doubt anyone was really waiting for an update on this, but thought I should close the loop here… Purchased a few of the Sterling APDs (great customer service from the company owner/engineer in the UK) and did some experimenting on my test engines…start the engine, disconnect the battery, let it run for an hour under various loads and environmental conditions. Shut down and reconnect battery then restart. Check charging system function… Success! The protection modules did their job and the charging system remains functional. Control samples run w/o the protection circuit suffered RR failure about half the time. Anyway, if you are updating to a lithium battery and are worried that a BMS disconnect might smoke your regulator it looks like these gizmos can save it. It appears that they clamp the voltage to a safe level. And they also give off one helluva spark when making the initial connection. Both of those things suggest a sizable capacitor lives in there… Steve

4 pointsWe picked up a parts tractor for a black hood restoration project for my Son and I. The plastic dash piece was worth the overall price and everything else was a bonus.

3 pointsWell the hood has it’s signature satin black front. It turned out fairly well but it certainly was nerve wracking making sure I got it right and masked off properly. My only gripe and maybe it’s me being critical is having to cheat the tape line on the RH side so it lined up properly with the rest of the hood. But this hood was twisted and some spot welds were broke out along with the grill being pushed in so all things considered I’ll take it

2 pointsSomehow an off road vehicle with an electrical cord connected to it seem like an oxymoron. Looks good and the fuel mileage is impressive. $ 17,000 OFF, last three new trucks I bought were all under $ 17,000..............................of course it has been a while since I bought a new truck. Hybrids are a great concept but there are so many extra parts and electronic components I would have to opt for the BEST EXTENDED bumper to bumper warranty. The price of repairs on conventional vehicles is getting outrageous, I can't imagine what it could be for something that complex.

2 pointstoday I was at the greenfield swap meet and I found me a wheel horse snow mobile, it was one pic of plastic, he said the hood blew off on the way there I did not see it going back home but that sucks the sead and plastic he had but burnt up in a house fire. it had a Kohler looks origonal I have done no reaserch yet. it looks to be there and the tank I just checked is full of rust. so, but the engine is there and everything else seems to be there, it has electric start. so are any plastics for it available, and I just looked it up the engine is origonal. or from other pictures it is, I will get pictures off my phone in a few, I need plastics and what kind of gas tank is it did any other horses use them, anything helps, I am clueless about it besides a know its a WH engine looks to be there and its missing some stuff. thanks -Keaton forgot to add I got it for free but I gave him $10 because I felt bad for taking it, it is the same guy I also got my 701 from

2 pointsIMO, as a certified EV tech, plug-ins are the best of both worlds in terms of what is available right now. Most of the ones that I am familiar with have a pretty small electric only range though. The Ford plug-ins, which are the ones I know the best, only have about a 14-mile electric-only range. Looks like the 4xe can go about 21. From a practical point of view I'd rather see the original Wrangler Hybrid proto-type built. It's arrangement looked more like the i3-Rex, where it was basically a fully electric vehicle with a little one-cylinder engine on board to run a generator to power the EV power train. This is essentially a scaled-down version of the powertrain used by diesel locomotives that allows CSX to claim "one ton of freight moved one mile on one gallon of fuel".

2 pointsHappy Birthday Steve on a stick! Don't celebrate too much with your home-made hooch today. @squonk told a lie, he forgot all about your present.

2 pointsTurns out the Ace at my location doesn't stock anymore. Found another supplier AGS Co. out of MI I think. Ace wanted 9.00 bucks, AGS had them for little over 2.00 I got two at that cost plus shipped UPS free. Have under 5.00 bucks in the pair. Just thought i'd pass the info on. Now to the EZ drain valve....

2 pointsDo the "connecting a test lead from battery positive to coil positive and trying to crank it and look for spark." There is NO LOW OIL LEVEL SWITCH. This idea comes up from time to time. The oil PRESSURE switch turns on the oil pressure light when there is no pressure, once running the oil pressure switch turns on the hour meter. That is all it does.

2 pointsHappy birthday you transmission guru!! Thanks for all your advice to our members, you’ve probably saved countless tractors from their demise! People like you help make Red Square what it is, the best Wheel Horse site on earth. 👍🏻

2 pointsThanks I did try a couple places on the fender with eazy off.I let it sit for about a min.Used a scrubbing pad. It worked well removing the paint, not perfect but good enough for me I just don’t Iike the two tone thing going on. Later after I get it all cleaned up I’ll go over it with boiled linseed oil.I find this brings out the old paint pretty well and keeps the rust at bay. All my machines are workers so not looking for perfect I’ll post a pic when it’s all done

1 pointSo I went to another estate sale today. I picked up this rusty old cleaver for 10 bucks. Watched a few videos on restorations but I wanted to clean it up without using any power tools. Came out pretty good but I'd like to get some more of the stains out of the metal. I used steel wool, vinegar, some emery cloth. Sanded the handle and rubbed linseed oil over all of it. Looked up the brand name... Briddell. I guess it's a pretty good one. Don't really have a use for it but I thought it was pretty cool. Any suggestions on cleaning it up some more without using any power tools?

1 pointThis is just a continuation of what I started here. I just felt like cleaning up the title a little. B-80 to C-160 to B-80 - Wheel Horse Tractors - RedSquare Wheel Horse Forum It's been slow going on this project with so many higher priority (per the boss) things popping up. I'm very close though. The @PullstartK181 is fully installed, wired up and ready to go. I decided to switch to a different carb so I've got the replacement apart and cleaned. Waiting on a kit for it. I'm also still waiting on the shroud lettering from @Vinylguy. I running this on an electric fuel pump and I had one of the cheapies on the shelf. I mounted it out of the way Every K181 I've had has had a very short throttle throw. This is my fix for that. I'm not doing a cosmetic restore but I did repaint the dash letters just cuz. Odd. That was a whole lot easier years ago. As with any project like this there's a few bugs to work out. I found one this morning. There was no spark. Turns out the secondary coil winding were about 45k ohms. Way too high. Pulled one off the shelf and I'm good to go on that.

1 pointHe’s using it to commute to work, 35 miles each way. First week of ownership, he’s getting 34.2 mpg in hybrid mode, not too bad for driving a door down the road. Comes home at night, plugs in his level 1 charger, and the next day he’s full of electrons

1 pointwhats your end goal ???????--- just get off the layer of ugly top coat paint -- and have tractor appear with original factory paint - - or is it to paint the tractor? if you can't get off the top layer and want to paint the tin then suggest you have it sand blasted to get to bare metal then properly prime and paint

1 pointWe started on Lawrence rd in Pownal. Walked about a mile and a half around Tryon Mt. Explored a feldspar mine that we didn't know about. VERY interesting place. Video below and some pics mixed in. We walked over to Bradbury mountain State Park along the border trail and others. Then back to the parking lot. Total mileage just under 6. Elevation gain almost 900 feet. The humidity was high and doing its best to snot beat me. Nearly succeeded bit eventually I won. I wanted to make sure I called out this Pic first. Note the ring around this tree about 3 feet up. There was a cable tied to/around it in the distant past that was part of the mining operation. It was pointed directly at the tall post/crane/derrick in the video. More mine pics. This is a Pound for loose large animals from a couple hundred years ago. Super cool van in the State Park lot. And the rest.....

1 pointWhen looking at mine, it appears you can remove the clutch and use the two screw method. Also make sure the front sump is not leaking.

1 pointAll: I picked up a NOS, never used 1963 32 inch snow blower for the 854 8 speed a couple of years ago. I had the old driveway replace in the spring, as the old one was too crowned to use anything on it for snow removal except my 1972 Ariens Sno thro. Had the time to do some necessary upgrades similar to the 1965 and later Wheel Horse snow blowers - added a second fixed idler sprocket with a new longer chain to improve the wrap on the auger sprocket - lengthened the lower chain guard too. Replaced the non floating drive shaft bearings with floating style and added a plastic "handle" to the chute crank. Replaced the Original WH drive belt with a new TSC Kevlar one. Modified the Lift Flag to work with an assist spring. Overall, it performed well this last storm - traction was a problem as I removed the chains from the 854 and the C81 - will need to chain up before the next storm. Bill
-
1 pointThanks Pete For posting that again. I'll give it a try on one of the 36 inch rear discharge decks I bought from Tony (DocWheelHorse) a couple of years back. I scraped the underside of my 36 inch gear drive deck in the spring then primed and painted it - it held up well. I used a HF needle scaler tool for the heavy stuff - once you get the angle and hand pressure right that thing is amazing. Bill

1 pointribill, its a wonder you got all that done without chains, recommend you use a SPECIFIC CHAIN LUBRICANT , on your side auger chain drive and pay attention to adjustment , often neglected , I make a point of never letting it go dry , also lube up any related movement areas , having a NOS unit , lets you know how its saposed to work , try to keep it in that happy zone , pete
