A more complete orginal unmolested tractor than this one. A 1267... After much screwing around with the seller ... yes this is the one I mentioned in the FB thread. Out of the blue the seller says yah I can have it for the original agreed upon price. I immediately hooked up the enclosed damn the slick roads... been ther done that right Dan @Achto...before he had another dumb @ss attack. A few PO mods but nothing that can't be undone and NO rattle can or paint brush antics. I would love to do a mechanical only resto on it but do I dare? It's kinda been betrothed to someone else. More on that later. Feast your eyes on this and you know drooling on keyboards can short them out. Check this seat out. One cannot doubt it's orginal. Gonna clean up like a baby's bottom. Two very small cracks on it. Seller says some bozo offered him 250 for just the seat. Luckily he declined. The getting rare two spoke large diameter wheel. Straight as the day it came from a dealer.

1984 Work Horse. Needed a drive belt and PTO clutch lining. I bought a complete PTO bell and clutch disk on fleabay for my 520H(cracked bell) for short money. After getting the tractor in the garage and digging into it, I knew I needed the drive belt and clutch plate .I used the one I bought for the 520 as that one is fine. Turns out the drive belt idler was toast. My book has no number listed for the idler. Go to TSC for the belt and get the last one. Wouldn't you know, the belt in the sleeve was not the size on the sleeve! Back to another TSC store to get the correct one. On a whim, I stopped at a small power equipment place on my way home. Plopped the junk pulley on the counter and asked "Got anything like this?". The girl behind the counter walked out back and dropped the same pulley on the counter. They had ONE in stock. My day is good!

The Square Turn Tractor Horseless farming saw many intriguing variations of the maneuverable small tractor for the farm. Perhaps the best example of ingenious engineering was the “Square Turn Tractor.” It was a progressive, unique tractor for its time. Conceived by two Nebraska men, A.T. Kenney and A.J. Colwell, it seemed perfectly designed for farm use. Kenney was a successful farmer and Colwell had 14 years’ experience as superintendent of construction on the C&NW Railroad. Colwell supplied mechanical genius and Kenney provided practical farming experience. The partners formed the Kenney-Colwell Co., Norfolk, Neb., and began taking customer orders in 1914. The Square Turn was a three-wheel tractor with two powered wheels and one castor or free wheel. It would do the work of from 3 to 5 teams in general draw-bar work and would deliver 35 horsepower on the belt. A four-cylinder kerosene-gasoline Climax Tractor Motor with 510 cubic inches of displacement was used. The driver’s seat was swiveled around the steering post allowing the operator to go forward in either direction. While towing an implement the operator would face in the direction of the caster wheel and have an unobstructed view. Each drive wheel was operated independently by moving a leaver on each side in the direction of travel. If one wheel was driven clockwise and the other counterclockwise the tractor would turn on the spot. While plowing the operator would face toward the engine and push both levers forward. The plows were lifted with an engine driven mechanical lift. The Square Turn could be throttled down as low as a crawl or as high as 3 mph. Ninety percent of the 7,800-pound tractor’s weight was carried by the two 50-inch diameter traction wheels. The Square Turn was so maneuverable that it would get close up to fence corners. It carried the plows under the tractor in full view of the operator, this allowed the plows to be lifted to avoid large stones or stumps without stopping. The machine operated at the same speed and power in either direction, making a real “two-way tractor.” There were no gears for the operator to shift, no differential gears and no clutch, just a pair of easily used levers. The Square Turn’s transmission featured radical new technology covered by eight patents. “This invention was called ‘the giant grip drive,’ a new type of transmission never before used in any piece of machinery.” “No other farm tractor is so easy and natural to drive as the Square Turn,” advertisements boasted. “Pull left lever to turn left, right lever to turn right and pull both halfway back to stop and all the way to back up. A unique foot throttle was used to control speed. Experiencing the financial challenges common to any start-up, Kenney-Colwell was forced out of the tractor business in just two years. The partners sold their patents to the Albaugh-Dover Co., Chicago, in 1916. The Square Turn Tractor Co. was organized in December 1917 with headquarters in Chicago; the manufacturing operation remained in Norfolk. Over the next four years, approximately $2 million in common stock was sold to 3,500 investors. Plans called for construction of approximately 2,000 tractors per year. Equipped with a 3-bottom gangplow attachment (an Oliver 3-bottom plow was the standard offering), the Square Turn sold for $1,385. Albaugh-Dover also streamlined the 7,800-pound tractor and added a Waukesha engine. Over a century later Mercedes has debuted its concept vehicle, the EQG, that has the same turning capability at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show. Gotta wonder if the Square Turn Tractor may have been their inspiration?

I just wanted to share my latest little project, I wish I took more photos of the process but pure excitement got in the way and I couldn't put the welder down. I wanted a factory looking muffler for the C series tractors so I came up with this. I bought a farmall cub muffler and dissected it. With the body empty I cut 4 1/2 inches out of it, then took a rotted out muffler and recreated all the original baffles, (wish I took pictures of this) it wasn't hard. Some sheet steel, a few holesaws, and a 1 3/8 steel freeze plug I had it built exactly as factory. I did reuse the original outlet pipe and Welded it all together and this was the end result. $40 for the muffler and an hour of time. I hope this might help someone looking to make a factory looking muffler fairly reasonable.

I am enjoying your interesting and unique look at tractors we never ever knew about! Thanks for the articles. The turning radius of the Square Turn and the Mercedes is much the same as the operation I had running 52 ft catamarans in the Caribbean. With the "twin screws" diesel engines you could go forward on one engine and reverse on the other and it would literally let me spin that 52 footer "on a dime".

Go have another one Waldo... Check out the head light lens...no cracks no fading no nothing but originality. Well ok the screws are not original so sue me. Maybe the bumper worked? Tires are all marked and no weather cracks and hold air! Very good to excellent condition. Sheet metal completely strait. No dents nicks or gouging. The PO things. Not terrible ... the bumper of course... actually kind cool that's gotta stay Mike... goes for character. Long legged guy? Custom hood ornament... lost in the heat of battle? Understandable. There's yer close up with the patina Waldo... whadda ya want for 57 years old? The deck... Haven't looked at it close yet but appears to be solid. Bonus nothing has been messed with and all there.

I picked up this almost unmolested 857 from @857 horse HHHOOOWWWAAARRRDDD!!! in 2018 at the show. The seat was hideous ( looked like a pin cushion my Grandmother had that the Bumpus Hounds from Christmas story got a hold of. Wish I took a pic!) It was so bad I had @BOB ELLISON recover it right then and there. Only non-stock were the rear wheels and tires .(which I prefer anyway.) It also had the remnants of the exhaust powered bug sprayer!

I like that bumper! Before all the seat talkin’ I was thinking man, I haven’t seen one of those before…

Soaking this all in waiting for the BUNN to take a leak. Nice! That front bumper has got to have saved the hood front. should have been standard equipment. Just a bath and a few seals...... viola a survivor. Could you just imagine the owner, when he brought that puppy home, showing it off to the neighbor. Yeah, got me a Wheel Horse! Someone said waffle now me hungry.

Ordered me a new hat, thought it was cool on the website looking 3D and all. But in the real not so 3D. But it’s still pretty cool. I ordered it from a company in the US but darn thing came from China. Not so cool.

After a mini EB new to check list. it runs! And smokes...... not real bad a puff of white now and then idling and quite a bit of white on throttle up. I'd like to pull the head and look at the bore but gonna wait till I can get buddy Joel over with his measuring sticks. Gotta K161 jug to uncork and have him check right away too to see what it needs. Needs more love and I'm sure a good carb cleaning wouldn't hurt & check points. Pulled the tank ... yellow gas & replaced the Gen light & charges good. Battery should be good for a year or two yet. New fuel line & filters. Funny Mike ain't chimed in yet I texted him pics yesterday. Maybe at the Doc with his wife and I get to keep it?

For the more later... @Mike'sHorseBarn saw this on FB and clued me in since he knew it was somewhat local. I guess whats fair is fair especially with brothers from a different mother so he has dibs. I says let's just get it safe from a FB crazy and roll dice for it later. Not to say if he knocks up the missus and can't take it it would fit right in with my 1067, 1257, 857, 867, RE-67... Did I mention '67s rule? Now Mike for the you owe me big time! I didn't mind having to deal with the crazy. Comes with the addiction. After digging the enclosed out of the snow bank i had to empty it of the tractors I had stored in it and the work. Not a big deal right? Not for my missus. She had a hissy fit that I was going to pick up a tractor that was going to someone else. Wadda ya know about that @953 nut? She just doesn't get that saving horses like this is what trips my hammer these days. Told her to stay home then not much of a navigator anyway. That damn near brought out the frying pan. Anyhoo she got over it. I took her out for Mexican afterwards and then she was all roses. More on the shape of the tractor after I play catch up with El Camino.

5" of wet stuff coming down steady... 3 driveways done. @ebinmaine i'm only gonna say this once, i'm glad BBT speaks so highly of added weight on tractors. My new weight box made a huge difference! You should take her advice and add some weight to your tractors...

@Achhto every 67 model I ever had had this style seat on it. Maybe just for the six speeds? @WHX?? Very nice pick up. If that was mine I tear it down to the frame and clean every part on it and Just enjoy it. Currently doing this to a 1057. I am going to put some Marvil on the parts to bring back the color that is there. And maybe put the deck on the shelf. Enjoy the Ride!

Easily the rarest Wheel-Horse seat to find still intact. Most have never even seen one before.

I did basically the same thing with two rotted Nelson’s I had laying around. I also hated the configuration so I reconfigured it when welding to be more like a onan style. I was happy with how it turned out. Tucks in nicely by the hood and sounds really good.

I think those seats were specific to the **67 models. My 867 had the exact same seat on it when I got it but it was all cracked to shpit. Does your seat have a fiberglass bottom pan? Mine did. BTW - Nice looking tractor !! Holdin' out on me again eh???

This is my almost all original 1057 ( even had the split white bushings on hood hinge ) and 67 lawn range . These Original seats on both too . and most are going to be liquidated soon . None have moved in 3 years plus I want to get my C10 done and need the room . Going to be starting a couple new threads soon as I’m working with a tractor club and rv park to have an all garden tractor show in Marshall Mi. They hope to have it annually if the turn out is well .

One more thing- dump the carb bowl. I've had a few that pick up condensation from the plastic fuel tank on a machine that has sat for a while. A bit of water and trash in the bowl can make a Kohler run like crap.

Exactly what I would do Wrencher. Clean, tag & bag every original nut n bolt. A 1057 and a LR is the only one missing from my '67 harem. I would also go through the deck and with it but just once. I mowed for many years in the 90s with the 1067. Gotta wait for Mike H. to chime in and see what his thoughts are. Yes Richard... never been used and works!

I have never seen a seat like that without it being in little square pieces. and it even came with the cigarette lighter, life is good.
  32. 3 points
It appears that every owner along the way truly cared for that tractor. It goes to show that they are still out there, rare but still out there. I’m happy to see it’s in good hands.

Salt mine has been my life this week. What is today?? Oh yea it's Thursday and I already have 53hrs in. Hopefully only another 12.5hrs tomorrow. Busy with witness tests on 13,200 volt 750kw units.

@WHX?? I have never even seen a WH seat like that? How rare do you suppose it is? If I had to guess I’d say very!
  35. 3 points
@WHX??You better get your eyes checked , that is ugly than a @squonk. I had to go there , I like the front bumper. it looks in good shape, where are the close-up photos? I had a POS El Camino that looked great at 40 feet away.

I have seen this tractor at the show in Edgar WI several times. The one in the back ground is working scale model that was built the the owner of the original in the for ground. Really cool machines.

No hurry on my end too, when the time is right we can compare notes on how good retirement is.

I once did a full scale model of the M2HB. At the time I did quite a bit of electronics work for the local PD and Sheriff. It wasn't unusual for a cruiser to pull up in my drive and ask me to have a look at somethin. An officer shows up and I invite him in while I grab my tools and whatnot. As I came back he kinda had a puzzled look, glanced to the corner wher I had the replica leaning, and started to say. "Is that a...." He cut himself off and hurried to the door. Lol of course I ket him in in the joke, but thereafter cruised around town in a 1961 scout OD green with the gun mounted. Theres pics somewhere if that same gun on a 48 Willys, alas I sold em as a package for a more practical vehicle that was needed at the time.

Field coils are common as dirt but a PIA to replace. those screws are in there tight. I would try a new reg first. http://www.psep.biz/store/kohler_starter_motors.htm

Gas cap vent is a good suggestion. Probably a new spark plug and cleaning your ignition points would be a good idea too.

Those of us that could really use one can't find one. That may be the problem any in that area would be worn out, way past repair.
  45. 2 points
Nice work as always. Really coming together.
  46. 2 points
Wouldn't backing the mixture screw on top of the carb make the mixture richer? Seems like it would need to go in a 1/4 turn to lean it out a bit, or am I all wet?
  47. 2 points
So there you go Don. It would suffice to say they are not really rare... except for in this condition which is really rare. We'll take that for gospel unless someone proves us different. That said Mike it's coming off and getting restored and replaced with a cheap seat for run around. Seat stays with the tractor tho. Don's got me nervous about my switch blade opening on seat time.

As always, entertaining story. You like picking up lost 's in snow storms don't ya?!?!?
