8 pointsWhat is exactly the problem with them? Fuel, spark? As for the updraft carburetors, the tillotson, should be only on the 550. Those are a bit mysterious and hard to deal with. If you are going to use them become real familiar with them before. There is literature on the manual section about them.Just to get tractor running and eliminate any other problem I would use a Walbro such as on the 551. Once running right with that one and you have studied the tillotson, i would then attempt that one. Those engines are very finicky as to timing also. If no one has been underneath that flywheel before that you know and you have spark I would for the time being stay away from that. Lets see what you have and what you think is the problem and well address one problem /engine each time.

5 pointsSmall update: new trans fluid, lubed and greased every single moving part pertaining to the clutch, brakes and lift mechanism, installed the rear fender pan, seat, rear axle bracket and rear tires with inside weights. Did a temp hookup of the rear light, really liking that! Check out the battery, that handle is so nice to use (a “go-handle” for anyone that watches Vice Grip Garage on You-Tube )

5 pointsThat seems to be a never-ending cycle of cost push inflation. The cost of labor, transportation and raw materials will be chasing one another higher and higher until the desire for costly goods wanes and manufacturers cut back on production. This is nothing new, during the 1970s and very early 1980s our government was on a spending spree which brought on massive price increases. Since none of the "Rich Men North of Richmond" have a very long memory the same thing is happening today and will continue until a recession ends the demand for overpriced goods.

3 pointsThe bricks I am re-using are 100 years old, solid, and of an odd size that is no longer available. The advice I got this morning was to mix the mortar a little wetter than usual, just lay mortar on the edges of the bricks to give it some 'squish' room, and that soaking the bricks in water before laying them would extend the working time of the mortar. To get a nicer finish on the joints, I need to strike them sooner. The roughness was caused by not striking them soon enough - the mortar had set too much causing me to scrape mortar off rather than smoothing it over.

3 pointsMin wage in 1980 was $3.80. Parts guys get $18-25 IF they can find a good one. I think I maxed out at $12. It costs more to make it so it costs more to sell it My cost on that 1056 is $16.83 List is $35.44 Go back and beat em up

3 pointsThis machine was my first real introduction to wheel horse. My father in law had basically given it to me 15+ years ago. We lived next door on a piece of the families property the my wife and I acquired her parents. We were young and in a hurry to put a house on the property, so we went with what we thought was going to be a good investment, a prefab home. That was Not a good investment and not one of my Best decisions in life. The house was riddled with issues ( typical prefab problems ) along with other financial woahs So instead of keeping it we let it go back to the bank, the mower got left behind at my father in laws. It was a tough pill to swallow. That has been four years now almost to the month. I was selling the 520 and my father in law bought that machine from me and brought over the 416. More then a back story then you probably wanted to hear lol 😆 and I had to be vulnerable about it because it well... Is a bit embarrassing, but this has been my life ups, downs and everything in between. I know the 416 won't look as pretty as the 520 I had but it is more of a example of what my Life has been. Thanks Pullstart and ebinmaine ☺️

3 pointsI'm guessing the belt came off and wedged or something like that and maybe the idler pulley let go. metallic sound The belt is the only connection between the engine and the clutch pedal. It would still change gears and roll in neutral plus a wedged belt would drag the engine down to stop Pull the belt guard off and you'll probably find the problem

3 pointsthe trany pulley came today so all ineed now is to put it on get the throttle together and make an exhaust

2 pointsDon’t really know what to call this little project…so swap over it is. My 308 might look like a nice rig but it has its issues, the biggest being the lift mechanism is buggered up. Will hold up an attachment for maybe 10 feet before it drops. Even drops with no attachments! Messed with it quite a bit and for me the easier fix is to transplant the Mag 8 onto a new machine. Picked up this roller (312-8) from @Docwheelhorse my neighbor yesterday. Won’t need that fuel tank…definitely don’t want the hood. Now that rear light I really like, that’s staying! How rough on a rig do you have to be to bust the headlight holder thingy . Gonna be slow going as I have some restrictions from a couple small surgeries last Friday…. But I can dismantle and clean up the new machine without busting any stitches

2 pointsWelcome. I have a 416h that had a 42” deck on it when I got it. I took my 48” deck and put it on. Many tractors used the same decks or style decks for years. I easily can swap the deck from my 1971 bronco 14 to my 1990’s 416H. Other attachments like the snow/dirt plow go on easy too. I wish I could help with the ground clearance picture but unfortunately the starter went bad and it’s sitting in my shed awaiting repairs. The onan engine in it is strong and will rarely miss a beat for you. Just make sure you check under the engine shrouds and clean it out regularly.

2 pointsDang…I didnt wanna tell anyone I was sore, but I am a bit. And I haven’t even swapped the motor over yet! My Dr. Has me on limited light duty for awhile. Gonna ask Tony (neighbor) to move the motor over once it’s all unbolted.

2 pointsI found a common Briggs # 492932S Crosses to a Wix 7035 which is a stubby filter. A 1348 is identical except for the size of the can. 2.3" tall as opposed to 3.4" So if you have the room, use the1348

2 pointsI asked my son that works in the commercial light and sound business. He said fluctuating voltage is typically not good for LEDs. Wiring directly to the battery would be better for them.

2 pointsYou just had to bring that up didn't you Ed. Guy posted a want add for the SD cover to make a recycler deck. Hey I got one of those might as well send it. How does10 clams + shipping sound. Great send her over. Managed to squeeze it in that box. Bulged the box out abit but if it fits it ships right? Yep 17.10 for it. Holy cow I says to the gal the box weights more than the part! Next time we'll see if it was better to ship by weight. Prolly not the case for you a PTO bell is fairly heafty. Now I'm gonna ruin yer day Joe. Not only did my travels today take me right by a JD dealer it took me right by a TSC and in for hardware. Your not gonna like this... PN crossed to this. Now I don't know how good a filter is but can't be bad as the orange death. Asked the JD dealer who makes theirs. He didn't know but said they are made to JD specs for what it's worth. Told him about the north of 20 at NAPA and he says geez & people complain about JD parts prices!
-
2 pointsto The deck is probably a 48'' Side Discharge. It's not a 2021. 1990 to 97 sounds more like it. 950 hours is okay if it has service records .Nice tractor.
-
2 pointsThe Mag 8 has the wimpy charging system with a separate ac output for the headlights. The more RPM’s the brighter they are. Not sure how the LED’s are going to operate with the fluctuating voltage. Might just wire them right off the battery with an in-line fuse so that they see 12v all the time regardless of engine RPM’s. Has anyone else been down this road? Might be a good question for the electrical section

2 pointsThis thing is pretty cool. The tongue folds back if you want to push it around by hand, so you aren't constantly banging your shins on it. Of course, I usually forget about that feature and bang my shins anyway.

2 pointsThanks everyone for the Birthday wishes. I'm not a big birthday celebration guy as I get older, But I do appreciate you all.

2 pointsMy 1994 416-H with 42" Recycler, bought in October 1993 cost $5100 out the door. Dealer threw in a belt buckle for free

2 pointsThe power flow bagger system brackets required you to remove bushings and slide the pin through hitch, through one bag arm, through transaxle, through other bag arm and through hitch then put clip on. So somewhere in the past 30 or 40 seasons this 312 had a bagger on a 42 or 48 deck... the bushings are still in the original owners garage and he hasn't a clue what there for!!

2 pointsYou just ruined my whole day Joe. My G&Y Z turn needs a oil change & 1056. Briggs 22 hp vertical. Just for S & Gs gonna call a JD dealer and see what they get for a JD branded one. Then go look for that $11 one. Or maybe a cheapy orange death one...
