20 points..well I did have a 418 years ago but it wasnt here long. Been casually on the hunt for a 414 or 416-8 speed with a single Magnum for awhile. Never anything for sale that’s not a 5 plus hour drive one way. Well I know of a guy in the next town over with a couple and this morning I bumped into him at the local gas station. Said if you ever want to unload one let me know. Long story short he put a price on each one and said take your pick. I chose this 1989 414-8 and brought her home! Runs great, tranny goes thru all the gears, 42” SD deck is quiet. Obligatory pics :

13 pointsI did something else today too. Since my 310-8 got upgraded to the 314-8, I decided to give it a heavier transmission while I'm upgrading. I have a couple spare 8-speeds, and the input shaft has been leaking on the original tranny for a while anyway. So I cleaned up one of my spares today. The gear oil was nasty, but had no water in it. I changed the axle seals as well. The hubs weren't horribly stuck, but it took a while to remove them. The hitch pin was a royal pain, but it finally came out. Only thing I didn't have was an input shaft seal. And it's gonna need one for this tranny as well. Degreased the whole thing and primed it, then sprayed two coats of Rust-Oleum regal red on it. The case had some pitting on it, so it doesn't have a smooth finish, but it's good enough for a worker. I'll chase the hub threads tomorrow and get her ready to swap into the 314-8.

10 pointsHitched up my 633 for a little clean up duty. I have to look into why it starts hard when it's cold, but other than that I'm really getting to like this little tractor.

6 pointsEric is correct about no syncs. Sometimes a loose or sloppy shifter can cause this. Loosen the lock nut at base of shifter and tighten the Allen Head set screw. Snug the screw and then back out a touch, then retighten the lock nut. If the sloppy shifter is not your issue, try the double clutch method and/or rock the tractor a little.

6 pointsLittle man drove the 314-8 around today. I gotta get him some pedal extensions! The new engine is so smooth and quiet! Upgrading the transmission next to a 8-pinion.

6 pointsCaught a few trout this morning. Was mowing the fence lines this evening when the corporate farmer showed up with his 16 row corn planter.

5 pointsStarted to go through the 414 this evening. How refreshing to get a tractor that has actually been maintained! Interstate battery is only a couple months old. Trans fluid is full and clean like it’s brand new. Motor oil is full and just as clean as the transmission fluid. Air filter is like brand new. Shifter boot looks brand new…,and it goes on! Swapped out the rear wheels/tires to some nicer ones I had in stock. Checked all 4 hub set screws and NOT ONE WAS LOOSE?? Ok.. I did have to tighten up the rear brake band a bit .

4 pointsLooking awful righteous ther Newbie... you got @Pullstart @Achto and my stamp of approval... Ya know I would have never thought of Red on one of my scoots... same with trucks... then a affliction came upon me. I could see a FLHTK in Candy Apple with flames Dan??? NO ... we ain't going ther...OK... how about a '73 FXE... NO... back in black...
-
4 pointsEither one would be fine. Would be cool to see the newly done 160. They don’t approve of tractors with mowing decks, and I know you don’t run a deck so that won’t be an issue. Not sure which I’ll bring, sometimes it’s decided by which one’s start the night before
-
4 pointsI hope you haven't been trying to shift 2-3 or back while moving. There are no syncros and that will wear out the 2-3 gear....

4 pointsUsual Thursday been over the Border to my mate Dunc's place. I never really know what we will be doing. Could be working in the workshop on one of his Land Rovers or farm tractors or maybe some landscaping. There's also the logging. Today we were splitting logs. Dunc was operating the tractor mounted log splitter and I was keeping him supplied with logs. I reckon we got over 5 ton split and put away in around 5 hours work. Tomorrow I will spend the day recovering. I really must stop listening to my head thinking I'm still 19 and take more notice of my body telling me I'm not.

3 pointsMaybe I should just come get it... I think your fine with that clearance @spitfire

3 pointsYes, lubricate the bushing....I tend to use vasoline on rubber parts. I have also found it is much easier if I just start the barbed fitting in the grommet in the flange only to the first barb, then insert the grommet fully into the tank. Then push the barbed fitting in to expand and seal the grommet to the tank.

3 pointsWoah woah woah! Who brought you to OSHA, WI? @SylvanLakeWH? Not me! shorts and boots!

3 pointsGot a few more trinkets installed this evening. I cleaned out the holes in the ends of the hood supports and found washers with hairpins to use there. This tractor hasn't had those there since the last build because the holes were stuffed with ... Stuffff. Dash faceplate assembled with cables and switches. Frame side lights in. S/G belt on. Holding clip for the fuel line on.

3 pointsInstead of waiting until the weekend I decided to spend a few hours after work the last couple of days to finish my 656 project up. Engine purrs like a kitten at idle, roars like a lion at full speed. Always love the feeling I get when I start up an engine that I have rebuilt. Put about 3/10's on the hour meter doing heat cycles & driving around a little bit. She will be back in the field by tomorrow doing some work with a lite disc harrow. Feels good to have this off my plate, now maybe I can get some work done on my stuff.

3 pointsNot exactly today, but recent progress on my front porch project. Got all of the long rafters up and am starting on the short rafters on the sides of the porch.

2 pointsHi all , i have managed to get hold of a c161 , it requires some work , but i have had it running and driving , i also have got a plough that i intend to attach to it . I will need to fit a rockshaft kit but i cant see any holes to fit one . Can anyone tell me where the holes should be ? I have sent an email to wheel horse parts and more regarding a new kit for it . And i am probably jumping the gun because it needs a rewire , some axle seals , fluid change , and im sure i will find a host of other things . I will try to take some pics and post up over the weekend , thanks for and info you can give . Geoff .

2 pointsWell folks I have to say I'm pretty excited... Zagray CT Museum spring show is coming right up in just a few weeks on May 6th. One of the things I enjoyed quite a lot my younger days was going to a show sale swap meet etc the day before it started and waking up right there on the grounds. I haven't gotten around to doing that for about 20 years now. I have wanted to go to this particular Museum since I found out about it a few years ago on Red Square. If all goes according to plan we are going to head down on Friday the 5th and set up with a few things for sale. I'll post them in classifieds. Who else might be going?
-
2 pointsOh I’ll be there! Bringing a couple, maybe three, tractors and one cart to offer up for sale

2 pointsHere is a step by step trouble shooting guide I worked up. Why won’t my starter turn over from the key switch? Lets take a logical step by step inspection of your starter problem. Is your PTO in the ON position, a wheel horse will not start with the PTO on. Have you had the battery load tested at an auto parts store? Have you cleaned and tightened all electrical connections including grounds? Are all fuses good and fuse holders cleaned? If these have all been done, we can check components of the starting system as follows; don’t skip a step or you may miss the problem. Be sure the transmission is in neutral and the parking brake is set. Take a pair of automotive jumper cables and connect the black cable to your battery "-" and a good clean spot on the engine. Now connect the other cable to the large post on the starter and touch the other end to the battery "+" terminal, does the starter turn over? If the starter turns over the battery and starter are good. If it didn't turn over try the same steps with the battery in your car/truck, if that cures the problem then the "good" battery wasn't so good. Presuming the starter turned over move the jumper wire from the starter post to the other end of the wire going to the starter which is one of the large posts on the solenoid. If the starter turns over when the battery is touched by the jumper as before then that cable is good, if not you have found your problem. Presuming the starter turned over move that jumper to the other terminal of the solenoid, connect the other end to the battery and use a small piece of wire to temporarily connect the battery "+" terminal to the small terminal on the solenoid, this should cause the solenoid to close and the starter to turn over. If not, the solenoid is probably the problem. If this was successful remove the large jumper cable and use the small jumper wire to the small terminal of the solenoid, the solenoid should close and the starter turn over. If not the cable to the battery is the problem. Presuming all of these have been successful remove the black jumper wire and repeat the small jumper to small terminal, if the starter turns over the ground is good. If all of these components test good then remove your ignition switch, be sure the transmission is in neutral, parking brake on, clutch depressed and PTO off. Use a small jumper to connect the terminals that were connected to the “B” and “S” terminals of the ignition switch. If the starter turns over then the PTO switch and other safety switches are operating properly and your ignition switch may be bad

2 pointsCHANGE THE OIL BEFORE YOU RUN IT AGAIN !!! Otherwise you'll be starting a new post titled "1970 Wheel Horse engine seized up".
-
2 pointsThe drive shaft will be in exactly the same place as the kohler - it worked out perfectly. The engine will move forward a little yet as I haven't removed the last pesky shaker mount.

2 pointsBrushed the salt and sand off the 314 today and converted it back to summer time usage and broke it in with a little yard clean up! Feels good to have some warm weather again! Oh and keep the garage door open
