13 points@JCM Jim came by today. We spent some time messing about with one of the recently aquired 417As. Jim did a bunch of muck removal and general cleaning. I did some diagnostics on the electric system. After a few hours we had fire in the hole!! Just for kicks I also tossed/hucked/chucked a batt-tree in the 1974 C160 Tecumseh engine tractor. It fired right up!!!

8 pointsYesterday I got the key switch installed on the '86 417-A and went for a test drive/mow. This was a solid machine when I got it a month ago, just needed some TLC. I gave it a really good cleaning, idler pulley, sleeve hitch installed (thanks again @wheelhorseman), painted wheels and new tires, new key switch, Kirk Engines transdenser II electronic ignition (https://kirkengines.com if anyone is interested), new foot runners, new drive belt, LED headlights and tail lights, painted engine baffles, painted seat pan, foot rests and side covers, replaced front axle spindles and axle pin and plate. When I bought it, it had 6" wheels on the front. I did not have a spare set of 8" wheels to put on it, but I just found a set on eBay that is being shipped that will go on it once they are rebuilt. First video is tractor running. Second video is tractor and mower deck running. The deck was so quiet, I decided I need to replace the spindle bearings on my other decks. The mower deck got new pulleys, wheels, belt, rebuilt spindles, and painted Pour 15 on the underside. Blade were in good enough shape since they were installed upside down, that all I had to do was sharpen them. Still need to do some work on the tiller and plow blade and then it will go to my sister in KY. And yes, this was more than just today. 7 pointsMy Grandson came to visit me today and wanted to go for a tractor ride so I took him on my '73 no name 16 automatic with a 10 hp repower I got from the show in June

6 pointsI didn't, until this morning. I have been cleaning and repairing parts for my build. I had a little welding to do. I have a small cheap HF wire feed welder. It is 220V and can be set up for either flux core or solid wire using gas. I had always used flux core wire, but a while back I bought a small bottle of gas and started going that route. I left the flux core wire in it. I then read a thread that said, solid core wire would burn cleaner, without so much splatter. I also read that many seemed to have better luck with .023" wire than .035". Armed with that info I bought a roll of solid core, .023" wire. I had a little welding to do to close up a hole, so I decided to swap over to the new wire. I have also read in many welding threads about guys having trouble getting their wire to feed properly. I have never had that problem, until now. The wire didn't want to feed well at all. Long story short, after looking at things a while, I noticed the wire feed wheel had 2 groves in it. Hmmm Could it be? Yes it could. The wheel is reversible. Use one side for .030" - 035" wire, the other side for .023" wire. I'm sure most of you already knew this. I didn't. If I didn't, it's just possible, someone else doesn't either.

6 pointsToday was finally the day I've been waiting for for about a month now. Back about the first part of October the SnapOn Rock N Roll Cab Express paid us a visit at the shop. I've always dreamed of having a nice box, but never figured I could get the approval with no credit. I have excellent credit with my small town bank, but they don't report anything so credit anywhere else has always been out of the question. But after talking with my dealer he thought he could get me approved, and he was able to come through. Ended up settling for a box that our dealer had in stock, a KCP1422 55" with power drawer and SpeeDrawer. Finished in flat black with teal trim, and complete with a worktop surface with built in power. He delivered the box today, and between it and the US General I already had I should have plenty of room to expand for quite a while now

6 pointsI took the deck off the c-160 today tore that apart by removing the recycler insert and scraped it all down, oiled it up real good. Stored it away for the winter then changed the oil and transmission oil and filter. Tomorrow I'll grease everything and put the plow and chains on. Weather changes next week with a highs only in the 40s so it's only a matter of time.
-
5 pointsYep ... And I can hear you canaries in a restaurant .... I'll take the eggfoo Yung with a side of 80/90 drain oil...
-
5 pointsThe paint was the cheapest thing I could find at the local discount / resale shop, had to add a lot of water as it was almost dried up. No roller, I prefer a straw wisk broom.

5 pointsToday started at 6 AM with the cat hacking up a hairball ! Left the house at 9 AM to turn in license plates on a car I sold . Stood in line for 1 1/2 hours at local DMV. Finally get in building explain to clerk I want to turn in license plates. I get a ticket with a number (#e 250) and told to go sit down. ( o crap) 20 minutes later get to the window. Takes clerk about 25 minutes to accept the plates. Next stop is the bank where I deposit check , cash and change into my account. Ole prune face teller takes 30 minutes to handle my deposit. Finally get home at noon and almost stepped on another hairball. Ate lunch and then started changing motor and vac unit from a Tac Vac trailer to one that hangings on 310-8. One on 310-8 has carb problem ( I don't do well with carbs) Only takes 45 minutes to to remove both units and put ole reliable B& S unit ( has not been run on 2 years) on the 310-8 after oil change and new E 3 plug starts up on second pull . Take rest of day off , take a shower around 4:30 pm , get out of shower only to step on cat claw on bath room rug which gets stuck in my foot.. Now wearing a band aide and thinking real hard about going to bed.

5 pointsYou guys wanna talk paint time to bring in the master. ... @Achto Little sample of his work here...
-
5 pointsHave had the same happen on my raider, since hubs are super rare and extremely expensive here, and waiting-time is superb long. I decided to weld it with special cast-iron welding rods.
-
5 pointsHydraulics are good on hubs but three jaw pullers are not. Take a look at this puller, works great. I built one like @meadowfield but mine uses a flat piece of 3/8" steel bolted to the base of an eight ton bottle jack.

5 pointsI Love it! Front mounted air compressor is on my list of things to build. I'd suggest a complete separate thread dedicated to all that's done to create and build an that as an implement.
-
4 points@Gregor I gotta agree with @Achto here. Your work efforts are clearly top notch and your generosity of knowledge AND parts is equal.
-
4 pointsAfter a day like that, you may want to consider a drink before bed. Hope tomorrow goes better.

4 pointsThe Paint Department is at it again. I have 4 of these 25ish lb weights and 4 of the 65 lb bolens weights to be made WH red. First weight, first coat.

4 pointsEvery time I see that I drool on myself… Remind me again… what brand house paint did he use and how thick was the nap on the roller…?

4 pointsHey Randy @rjg854... best check yer herd..... somebody didn'r close the latch on Squonkys cage and he got out....

4 pointsI believe the best pulling point is behind the hub with a bearing puller, strongest point to pull on. The pulling method (power) is up to the individual preference. Bob

3 pointsHappy Tuesday, So... I've wrecked all sorts of cheap 3 jaw whimpy pullers on all sorts of projects including our famous stuck Wheel Horse hubs... I accidently wrecked @Sparky puller too and owe him for that. My latest stuck hub had me looking again for something that would get it off. Then I find this bad boy at harbor freight... I love the idea its hydraulic and eliminates the weak point of typical pullers---the threads on the point. Cost me $75 after tax and the 20% coupon... Ill let you know how it goes. Tony

3 pointsWelcome to the forum. The Belgium built models used consecutive serial numbers from year to year. This model number 71-08K4 has shown up in the past The C-80 model number is the same as yours. Click on the fuzzy picture in this link.

3 pointsI had a cylinder #8 misfire problem on my truck we call “The Cadillac,” plaguing me. I replaced the spark plug, then swapped wires with another cylinder, then replaced the coil, but still no change. Still #8 misfire. Air, spark, fuel? No fuel. Yesterday, I quick pulled the fuel rail and that injector was absolutely packed full of rust. A byproduct of old fuel lines, I suppose. Remember, even though it has all new fuel lines, that truck sat about 4 years. A little brake clean, compressed air, and an electrical jumper test, it went back in. No troubles any longer!

3 pointsTony: Built this bad boy in the spring using a HF Bearing Seperator and a Snap-on fine pitch puller screw. (East meets West???) - pulls on the backside of the hub, not the flange - works well Bill

3 pointsSorry for my late response getting back to all of you but I thought I should post our tank repair since all of you were so helpful. Check it out, I think you'll like it. A good friend of mine is a machinist and he made two aluminum "keys" to fit into each slot, one on each side of the tank, and each key has a helicoil (steel threads versus original aluminum) for the threaded knob. He made each key such that the helicoil is centered on the witness mark on the tank which was left from the original knob (this ensures that the hood retaining knob will line up with the new threaded hole because the helicoil threads will be in the original position). After this, I had my kids bake some cookies for one of our welders at work in exchange for him welding the keys to the tank. Voila! It's perfect now. Only one side is shown in the attached pictures but both sides are the same. Now we need to get a few of the original tank screws since a few are missing and I just made a post to see if anyone has a few extras they'd be willing to sell to me. Thanks again for all the suggestions and help.
-
3 pointsSome good discoveries you have found. Solid wire with gas is my go to. Flux core works but I don't like all the spatter. Flux core spatter can be reduced by reversing the polarity of the welder, but there is still spatter. For light metal I prefer 023 wire, if you are welding 1/4" thick + metal then the extra filler from the 030 wire is nice.

3 pointsOkay, you really aren't gonna believe it, two broom sticks that I am gonna make walking sticks for my grandkids. Couldn't find anything locally, so these were a little over $6 a piece with free shipping of course. How did they even make any money on these? They went through USPS from Amazon too. At least they are made in the USA!!
-
3 pointsthose weights don’t quite have a big enough hole to clear the hub… Nice score nonetheless Craig! Almost beats my set of 4 for free on a SS12 on the side of the road a few years back!
-
3 pointsScored the mother load of Sears weights today. Just a tick over 32lbs each, think I did OK for $80. Also, got the solid 50lb Jacobsen set I got back from the Squonk mounted up on the Honda-Horse today as well.

3 pointsThanks to @davidtmercer for responding to my wanted add!!! Im now the proud owner of my first battery powered - an E-141!!! Dave graciously offered to meet me roughly half way between our homes and we sealed the deal after a quick cruise around a Meijer parking lot… Haven’t dived into it yet but the Executive Board of the SL&WHN Railroad is looking forward to reducing its carbon footprint… As you can tell by the garage shots, the old gasoline powered ‘s weren’t quite sure what make of the carbon neutral hippie, but in the end they came around and let her in the garage when I explained to them quietly that the electricity that charges her batteries is from coal and natural gas…

2 pointsIt sounds like a lot of unnecessary guessing going on. Did you confirm if there is spark? Is it timed correctly? If no spark, it’s best to start tracing power from the battery through the switch and safeties to the coil. A lean condition could make a backfire… is there adequate fuel to the carb?
