Finally got around to the XI FEL build. Opted for an combination, old school D type / xi style build. I Cabbaged materials this spring and summer, with a little reverse engineering, and got the build together. For now it is about 85%, I need to finish the bucket and some paint. The bucket is going to be an easy mount, not necessarily a quick mount. I have a set of forks to swap out with the bucket. I actually use the forks on my 520 way more then the bucket and wanted the forks mounted to the loader frame rather then the bucket clip on ones I have now. Keeps the load closer. Notes, I found a pretty nice 25 micron suction filter at the surplus center and picked up most of the hydraulic parts there. Steel tubing looks nice but is not any cheaper than hose by comparison. Here is a few pics I will post the completed pics in a couple weeks.

You know, I would have been impressed if you had only tried a little bit harder! Some more thought and effort would have shown what could have really been hauled and would have encouraged so many more members!. Well. I'll be watching for the next haul!

This method uses the frequency of the AC electricity generated by the stator coils in the alternator to determine the engine's RPMs. In these twin cylinder Onan's, there are eighteen (18) stator coils, nine (9) of them connected to each of the two inputs to the voltage regulator. That means that one revolution of the flywheel's embedded magnet passing the stator coils generates nine (9) current pulses at each voltage regulator terminal. The frequency setting on a digital Volt Ohm Meter (VOM) counts the number of current pulses in one second. If we measure the frequency of current pulses at one of the voltage regulator terminals we can apply a simple formula to convert the measured frequency into RPM. The formula for an Onan is: RPMs = pulses per second ÷ 9 pulses per revolution x 60 seconds per minute Frequency RPM 9 60 One revolution per second = sixty per minute 150 1000 A good minimum idle speed* per the Onan Service Manual 165 1100 A good governed idle speed* per the Onan Service Manual that: a) overcomes hydro drag, and b) keeps a good amount of cooling air flowing c) doesn't charge the battery! 300 2000 375 2500 450 3000 525 3500 Approaching max speed for the Onan 540 3600 Normal max operating speed* for the Onan To make the measurement: 1. Set your VOM to measure frequency in the 0-1000 hz range for 0-50 VAC (see VOM manual, if you need help with this**) 2. Connect the black or COM probe to a solid engine ground 3. Set the engine throttle to the speed you want to measure 4. Carefully touch the red or "V Ω" probe to one of the outer terminals on the engine's voltage regulator (see photo) Be extremely careful to touch ONLY ONE terminal on the regulator-- a short circuit caused by touching two terminals at once or grounding the terminal can cause serious electrical system damage. 5. Read the frequency on your meter's display and convert it to RPM using the table above Frequency will likely fluctuate somewhat but on a smooth-running engine it won't be by more than 5-10 hz. If your VOM has a "HOLD" button, you can use it to "freeze" the reading at a point in time. This technique will likely work on many engines used in WHs having an alternator and three-terminal voltage regulator. You must know the number of coils in the alternator stator (Google an image and count them!) and can use this more general formula: RPM = VOM frequency ÷ (number of alternator coils ÷ 2) x 60 A K321 stator, for example, also has 18 coils and a three-terminal voltage regulator so it uses the Onan table above. *Refer to the Onan Service Manual for information on adjusting the carburetor mixture and idle limit screw as well as the linkages for the governor and throttle control to manage idle and maximum engine speeds. **The frequency mode is normally labeled with "Hz" or "Hz Duty" or "Hz %" or "Freq". Typically, a frequency-capable meter works where the voltage in the circuit is within the maximum AC voltage specification of the meter. Small engine alternators like the Onan typically can generate un-regulated voltages up to 50 volts. Again, check your meter's manual to confirm its suitability and how to use the frequency function. (Thank you @lynnmor for checking my work and adding suggestions before I posted it!)

Hello all, Ive just bought a well used but hearty 518 h and im pretty happy so far. Had a demo, paid for it, trailered it home and will do a mow tmrw. Its been well looked after, new plugs and oil filter but what else should i look for? It has a slow leak on the LHR and the RHF is cracked but holds air so what is my tyre choices? Any help will be much appreciated and ill put up some pics and progress pics as i slowly work on a resto!! TIA

Got a little seat time today. Started by tinkering with my old MTH chopper/shredder. It has been dormant for about 15 years, so I was planning on a carb rebuild. Before I tore into it today, I splashed some fresh gas into the tank and gave it a shot of carb cleaner. To my suprise, it started on the first pull! So, I put more gas in it, moved it over beside the mountain of leaves (several years worth) that have accumulated at the end of the road and started shredding. Kept going until the gas ran out. Turned a noticeable portion of that pile into good looking mulch. Got the Horse out, hitched the cart to it and proceeded to distribute the mulch around my property where it will be beneficial. Next time I see my neighbor, I'll ask if he wants to turn some mulch into his garden. That will give me more playtime with the shredder and the Horse. My wife took a sewing class a couple of towns away. She came home with some neat work, and the news that she bought a new sewing machine. The price had 5 digits - BEFORE the decimal point! It is a very capable machine, she got it at a very deep discount, a rebate, and over $1,000 of attachments thrown in at no cost. She is good enough that she will make good use of the machine. With that kind of deal, the margins on sewing machines must be pretty good Of course, I informed her that now she has no right to complain if another Wheel Horse or two show up. @pullstart - I'll look after one of your big wheel tractors for you if you need more room. I'm even close enough that you can come visit it.

She is worn. pull the pivot pin and see if it is worn. If the pin is worn you can make a new one from 3/4" stock. The hole in the axle may also be wallowed out. You can drill it out to 7/8" and press in a couple of sleeve bearing to tighten things up.

I put the new 42RD on the 310 to mulch some leaves. Forgot I had greased the ever livin' hell out of the spindles. Engaged the PTO and watched the grease fly everywhere. Welp, at least she ain't gonna rust.

Funny story, I’ve gotten rid of one for sure, maybe two since then... but have gained about four or five more! let’s see... Since Rebel, we’ve added a 1054, a 520 XI, a 401 (Rylee’s), another 1054, @SylvanLakeWH’s WHRat WHrecker, a Ride Away Senior, and an RJ-35 will join us later this week! Ok, maybe more than four or five...

Yes Eric. Do as Dan says. All the solenoid does is connect the biggie wire from the battery to the biggie wire to the genny. The little tiny wire comes from the key switch. Solenoid is grounded. Turn the key to start and the little wire sends little electrons to the little solenoid terminal. The solenoid contacts close and the biggie wires are now connected sending big honkin electrons to the genny. Genny goes whoompa whoompa whoompa.....

I went and did a rebuild on mine last year after squirrels attacked my gas tank, and I noticed that the tub of my trailer was rotting out. Picked up a NOS Husqvarna trailer from a dealership that went out of business, and put the two together to make a solid unit. Got some new hoses for it and it works like a charm, still trying to get it to attach to my deck properly, but most of the time I blow my leaves into piles and then suck them up by hand. Before -> Squirrel Attack -> Rebuild -> Now

As I posted earlier, I picked up this 857 a few weeks ago. got it pretty cheap. Runs really well. Has a few things that are not original but over all its in really good shape. Mine came with a plow blade, no mowing deck. I am on the fence on if I should leave it alone or change a few things. Things I would change would be maybe the seat. The high back seat makes it a little harder to step over. Might want to paint the wheels. Maybe black. Maybe some custom decals. Anyone want to share some photos of their 857's? I would love to steal some ideas ....errrr.. I mean I would love to see what you have done to yours!!

How much of a slope? I have plowed my drive with a B-100 8-Speed since 1993. I only have a slight slope. I use 2-link tire chains on asphalt. They work good, but do tend to scratch up the top surface. The amount of snow that you can plow depends on the weight of the snow and the depth. Heavy, wet snow that is more than 6" deep will stop you cold while pushing up the grade. If I can, I try to push the snow off to the side with the blade angled until I have a path. Then I can chip away in smaller, straight pushes. You will learn the best way only with experience. I have learned that when the snow reaches 2-3", it's time to get into the saddle and start plowing. But you can't go wrong with the B-100. It has all the power you need.

I've done a bit more work today. Made the drop out latches out of 1/4 flat plate. I mounted them vertically rather than horizontal as they work better on my design. Just got to make a locking bolt to hold them in the closed position. I did the cut outs vertical and it is easier to put the attachment bar in.

Man, I almost pulled the trigger on that idea but the tractor funds ran out in a hurry haha. Stopped in to visit a fellow Horseman (hes rarely on here and cant find him) and snatched up a bunch of parts including another K321 short block, axle mount to put a plow on Hoss, 42" side discharge deck for 'lawn duty', and a bunch of other misc items. It was a great trip!!!!

The only tractors I don't put a solenoid on are the ones with the starter generators because I really like the sound they make when they come to life. Just be absolutely SURE if you do remove the solenoid from your tractor that your battery cables are very large. Also that your switch is changed out to the correct one. There's a lot of current going through. @D_Mac Here's a picture of our herd plus one on the left from fellow member @OldWorkHorse Steve. Trina's 2 are in the center. The brighter red one is a 657 and the other one is an 867. If you'd like close up pictures or any particular angle let me know....

Just my ,find original seat,or close to it and maybe paint wheels linen beige. Here is a picture of my 857(its an 8 speed now so guess its an incognito 867) with the tsc seat I think you are referring too.I like the way it sits but will swap it out for an original if I ever run across one.BTW the 550 suburban and this 857/867 is by far the easiest to mount/dismount in the herd......

Took a couple hour off for a road trip. I needed another 42" SD. It had a roller attached. I couple jumpers and a screwdriver and it started and purred like a happy kitty. Looks like a new ign. switch and a drive belt and the roller will be a runner. Back on topic and back in the tree this evening.....saw two doe.

New pins on the right side loader arm today. No grease on anything as it will all need to be painted anyways, i just dont want to keep messing with the loader with worn out pins. Looked at the trans for a few. Dont know anything about them, dont see any obvious issues. Need to lift the machine up soon and wash the trans so i can start to find the problem(leak) if im lucky its a loose filter but i doubt it.
