In the small circle of friends that Trina and I have there is a woman who I'll refer to as Marie. We met six or seven years ago when she started showing up for the hikes that I was leading. Over the next couple years our group narrowed down to a half a dozen people or so and we would meet a few times a year to camp and hike and shoot the breeze like friends do. We all knew where she was stationed and that she had a fair pile of seniority so obviously she was in some sort of mid-level or higher position. We all knew she had been stationed in different parts of the world over the years and we all knew one of those places was the Middle East. She's a small statured pleasant looking woman who would have to stretch a bit to get much over 5 ft tall. Not antisocial by a long shot but fairly quiet and keeps to herself. For her retirement ceremony she had a certain amount of seats she could fill in a small on-base multi-denominational chapel and it happened to be that our little circle of friends was invited. We found out when we got there that one of the things they do during this ceremony is to take a person from the base that is one of each of the ranks that the retiree has achieved over the years and those people are all lined up and the flag is passed from the entry door to the next to the next to the next and so on naming off each of the positions until it gets to the person the ceremony is for. We all knew her as Marie. Turns out everybody on base knew her as something somewhat more important than we realized. There were 10 people in that line. She was Navy COMMANDER Marie!!! We all found out that day that what we thought was just our little friend Marie was a FRONTLINE COMBAT TRIAGE NURSE with two tours of duty in ACTIVE WARFRONT and had something like 24 or 28 years of service under her belt. The point to all this is that I want to acknowledge all of our military personnel of every branch and give you a HEARTFELT THANK YOU. I have no military experience of any kind and I want you to know that I acknowledge the rewards and the sacrifices that you've all been through so I can sit here and write this all out without having any fear. Enjoy the time you have with your friends and family. Enjoy your Veterans Day. Enjoy all your days.

Thanks to all who have served and those who supported them on the home front. When a person enters the military it impacts their entire family and circle of friends. A couple years back I was at the airport awaiting my wife's return from a trip. A rather large group of people were standing near the arrivals gate and every time a uniformed member of the military came by they applauded and cheered, it was heartwarming. I fear that the "Cancel Culture" movement that seems to be catching on may bring an end to these signs of respect for people who are willing to enter the military. Thank you to all who respect our country and those who are willing defend it.

I've been looking for a deck for my 310. I can restore my 42SD, but the sheet metal is a bit rough. Last night at around 9:30, I opened the FaceBook marketplace and searched Wheel Horse like I have for months. This came up: WHOA, HOLD UP KIDS! WHAT HAVE WE HERE? How much does he want? Probably $2,500 and my firstborn.... I immediately replied, "I'll take it." He replied in a short while and by 10PM we agreed to meet the next morning, I ended up driving almost 2 hours this morning to get it, met the seller at 9:45AM, and took out my cash and gave it to him. I already knew I HAD to take it. A few more pics when I got it home: A quick hosing off and soft bristle brush. A quick scrape of the underside with a 1" putty knife: Then a washout, in the rain. Not bad, not bad at all. A few minor issues: One gauge wheel is shot and is wearing through the bracket. Not a big deal. New wheels/axles and worst case, weld up the groove and grind it flat. Also, it looks like there is a small crack in the deck below the left rear Attach-Matic bracket. You can see a slight depression in the steel where it looks like the bracket took a pretty good hit from the top. If so, I'm going to weld that up too. So two minor issues. Nothing else. Almost new mule drive included. New belts. All spindles mint. All pulley's/hardware/springs...almost 0 rust. So for the most part, I got a brand new 42" RD. She's gonna get pampered. Don't ask how much I paid. I feel guilty.

Stopped by my friends house to visit my 857 that a picked up a few weeks ago. Dying to get it home to start working on it. I did wipe it down a bit while I was over there. I got my front decal from @Vinylguy and I am waiting on my hood ornament and hood latch knob from @76c12091520h. I am going to shorten the throttle cable on it and put the chains and wheel weights on the rear tires and mount the plow. Cant wait to get it all together. Might even look for a deck for it.... Who Knows !!

Thank you to all fellow veterans, especially any sub vets. I think of you "lifers" often when Uncle Sam deposits my Navy retirement check every month! I would also encourage you to support your local VFW, American Legion and all the fine clubs that support our veterans.

“And I’m proud to be an American, where at least I know I’m free...” Thank you to all, who have and are currently serving this country! I am thankful for the local militia, the police and emergency services, our land, air and water military personnel and all who actively keep this country secure and free! Like EB, I too have no military background, but have family and friends in the ranks, among my youngest 17 year old brother in-law who recently enlisted in the marines, shipping out just after graduation to boot camp. I am thankful for y’all’s service, no matter the badge!

Now that I have all kinds of time started to tighten up the thousand started projects around here. Changed the old picket fence to something a little more cheerful letting light through and looking a little more rural. Added a few more decorations to the shed as requested by wife( she now refers to it as the she shed), a vintage training oxen yoke and a copper weather vane horse above door. Painted my rain water barrels in camouflage since they stood out like sore thumbs in white. She also requested that I put another RJ out as a decoration to which I promptly complied. Go figure, after all these years she finally has taken a liking to the little guys. If this keeps up I am going to run out of RJs.

Lotsa little things going on in preparation for fall ending. Hit the bottom of the deck with POR-15 and then black spray paint. This deck ain't rotting out. Also installed 3 brand new blades. Brand new blades, what a luxury. I've been working off this stack of well used ones I also started some bodywork with more POR-15 and have a can of original Toro red courtesy of the previous owner February 2016? It's still good! I topped off the water and put it on my trickle charger to let it desulfate the battery for a few days. And finally, some little rat bastard field mice made a nest in my Kohler and chewed up the spark plug wire, causing a no-start issue. New coil assembly is on order.

I am the proud grandson of 2 - WW2 vets, one Army (European front) & one Navy (Pacific theatre). And I am very honored & proud to be the son of a Vietnam vet, Capt Lewis Walsh, US Army, Air Cav 1/12th, Company C. Dad was in ROTC and his tour was from 70-72; he entered as a butter bar Lt and was honorably discharged as a Capt. He operated for the most part without a platoon Sgt & spent time at FSB Timbuktu and Gibraltar under Col. Tyson, and lead some maneuvers into Cambodia. The majority of his the time was in the bush and said he could count the limited number of times he remembers being on a FSB. He was a part of Operation Thundering Hooves in Oct '71 and with his platoon, captured a few NVA prisoners and unfortunately had some men wounded. Since he lead without a platoon Sgt for so long, he had a great report and reputation with his squads. Dad was highly decorated and has been blessed to keep the scars of war from negatively impacting him and his family. Here are a few pics of my Dad, Lt. Lew Walsh ( he feels more like a Lt than a Capt!)

Well ladies and gentlemen what we have here is a parlor stove that was made out of melted metal way back in 1886 in Bangor Maine. It's a New Clarion Number 3. Cast by Wood Bishop & Co. The base measures roughly 20" front to back, 25 or 26 wide and about 28" high including the legs. Her plans are to do some research to see what it needs for restoration. Possibly add some fire bricks or sand. Clean up the exterior surface and "season" it properly back to original. If you have any comments questions or advice please feel free to post away...

1963 to 1969 US Navy ET-2 Following boot camp my first duty station was the Brooklyn Navy Yard where I was a mess-cook. From there I went aboard the USS Muliphan (AKA-61) followed by transfer to Great Lakes Naval Training Center where I studied electronics and became an ET (electronics technician). After ET school I served on the USS Pandemus (ARL-18) which was a repair ship for minesweepers. When the Pandemus was being removed from service I was transferred to the Charleston Naval Station ET Shop for the remaining few months of my enlistment. Name: USS Pandemus Namesake: Pandemus, a goddess in Egyptian mythology and Greek mythology Builder: Chicago Bridge and Iron Company, Seneca, Illinois Laid down: 20 July 1944 Launched: 10 October 1944 Sponsored by: Mrs. Laura Sauter Gasperik Commissioned: 23 February 1945 Decommissioned: 23 September 1946 Recommissioned: 14 December 1951 Decommissioned: 30 September 1968 Fate: Sunk as a target, 1969 Several years later the USS Muliphan would come back into my life. In 1989 I was living in Fort Pierce, FL and the Muliphan was brought there to be sunk as an artificial reef. A reporter friend got advance word of this and asked if I had ever heard of this ship. Hell Yes! She wrote a brief article about the plan to sink the ship and it turned out that there were four of us living in the area who had served on the "Mighty Mule" at various times. When the day came to sink the ship the four of us were able to take her to sea for the final voyage. Small world isn't it. Muliphen was decommissioned on 28 August 1970, and transferred to the Maritime Administration for lay up in the National Defense Reserve Fleet. The ship was struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 1 January 1977,[1] and on 21 January 1989 was sunk as an artificial reef in a depth of 175 ft (53 m) of water off Fort Pierce, Florida[2] at 27°24.331′N 80°00.337′W

I grew up in a house with lead pipes for plumbing, sprayed DDT on our garden without a mask, rode in the back of pickup trucks, worked around asbestos while on construction sites, made numerous power entries to the reactor building while I was a Nuclear Power Plant operator, drank, smoked and experimented with a few substances and you expect me to be afraid of spray paint.

😂—I’m pretty sure that Jim knows if he supplies materials to frame up a “majic shed” that I’d be there to supply the labor without dropping off an invoice. I can’t hardly enter my shed from now until April without being thankful for the the heat system that he set up for me👍🏻 I do however, totally understand what you are saying about cost multiplication when dealing with the winter cold!!!! This will be the first winter in over 20 years where I don’t have a “planned (contracted)” house to frame. I am bidding several interior projects which is just fine with me👏🏻

Continued puttering around with the air compressor. Family lore says the pump started life in a 1920 White Freightliner as the air brake compressor, I believe I'm the third generation owner. Figured for it's 100th birthday New electrics Update the hi pressure side with new paint, new black iron piping, overpressure valve, working pressure gauge, and filter/regulator/lubricator New air filter Oil change This is a water cooled head, used to be connected to the trucks rad. I added copper pipe to act as a rad, but it wasn't enough so I'll be adding 9' of piping to act as a belt guard and rad. I heard a romour that pictures are required so... Hopefully finish it before long.
