As some of you know already I had to put my english bulldog down a couple of weeks ago. I got her at 8 weeks ago and she was by myside for 12 yrs. At first I didnt want another dog as I now am employed where I work with dogs 4 days a week. I figured I got my share of dogs through work. Well working with them isnt the same as having one of your own. So I started looking around a bit. I looked at my local city animal shelter and to my surprise there wasnt any dogs listed up for adoption. Not sure if it is do to this whole Covid stuff or not. So under were the adoptable dogs would be there was a link for Lost and Found dogs. Dogs the humane society took in as lost or stray animals. I clicked it and I seen these eyes looking at me. I knew right away that if it wasnt claimed I wanted him. No information on the dog other then they called him " Jeffrey". So I sent an email off saying that if he wasnt claimed and was put up for adoption I be interested in adopting him. First picture is the picture from the site. They emailed me back saying that Jeffrey was picked up about 5 weeks ago. They think he was hit by a car and had severe injuries. Good news was he was cleared by the vet to go to foster care and would be adoptable in a few days. That info made me want him even more as some of you know about my health issues and long stays in the hospital fighting cancer. I asked what injuries he suffered and who I spoke with wasnt sure. So this morning after I picked up that Wheel Horse 857 I got a text asking if I would be interested in meeting Jeffrey. You bet I would !!! So I met with the woman who is fostering him and a woman from the shelter and Jeffrey ! Jeffreys injuries will all heal. No permanent injuries. He has a big scar down his side where he was stitched back up. They called his injuries a " degloving" where his skin was pulled away from his muscles. He also had a bad infection from it. he was either struck by a car or jumped or pushed out a car... who knows, no one can be certain. Can I say he seems like the perfect dog.... I dont think he would ever hurt a fly. Loves people but is very respectful and gentle. Dosnt jump up on you. He has some confidence issue but hoping I can help him with that. I pick him up tomorrow !!! He is only a year old. No telling what kind of home he had before but he will have a good one now. He is still a puppy and has a lot to learn. So today has been a good day. I was excited to get the HORSE but the DOG is even better !!! Second photo is Jeffrey and I at the city pound where we met. They had to approve my adoption application, thats why I have to wait till monday to take him home.

Chris and Stacy seem to be doing great. Me...I am still like no change. I had a sliced apple and some tea for dinner last night. I finished what was left for breakfast this morning. I've been bundled up under the covers day and night since last Monday just trying to get rid of the chills. Sleeping 20+ hours a day is no problem. Still flirting with fever and cough. I felt better this morning, so I came down to the Man Cave, but I can see I'm going to go back to bed. BTW, the whole family voted. Take care you guys.

she said "yeah, you are" anyhoo,... I was looking for a later model steering wheel for Mongo. I like the thicker wheel grip on the later ones and found this for not much more $$ than the steering wheels I was looking at. has a solid 42" RD deck and a nice set of steel weights for the rear. needs a carb clean, guy just wanted it gone...

I have been really struggling with losing my job here shortly. I have been battling a bit of depression. I have been since my dad took his life in 2016. I have had a lot of loss since then. But just when your world seems like its giving up on you I have had folks call me or text me from this group and my Facebook groups to make sure i am ok. On top of everything else we are struggling a bit financial wise. But then i see my grand baby and all of a sudden everything is better. I love this little girl more then life itself. She is a little over a year old now. And she loves to see her pappaw. When my wife goes and brings her to our home in the morning she smiles and waves at me when my wife is walking up our stairs. Im sorry to share this stuff with everyone but it makes me feel better to just talk. Even if nobody is listening. I love my garden tractors to working on them makes me feel good to. Thanks for listening! VID_20201029_144132510.mp4

6 weeks ago I didn't know what a Wheel Horse was, now somehow I have 2 of them. This Raider 14 and 6 weeks ago a 1971 Raider 10. This could be a bad habit.

I was wearing my older brother’s new leather shoes out to the garage one time and stepped one foot in a drain pan full of nasty 90 weight. I stuck it in the clothes washer with some laundry and tried my best at running it without brother or ma knowing. Another big mistake.

Had time to de-carbon the cylinder, adjust the valves and gave her an oil change. No more taping and this little magnum runs like a top. I am starting to like this one.

Hair dryer or heat gun will aid in removal. A gum eraser wheel on a drill is the best way to remove old decals and glue residue without damaging the paint. I prefer a 3M brand one but here is a more economical one. https://www.amazon.com/VViViD-Diameter-Remover-Including-Adapter/dp/B084D43QF7/ref=pd_sbs_263_27?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B084D43QF7&pd_rd_r=d3801901-1002-4472-a639-f85909d705ab&pd_rd_w=n5dgy&pd_rd_wg=a7VS1&pf_rd_p=ff9b5089-1414-4e8f-9675-3397e98bf276&pf_rd_r=41EZYMFZXG4HR82F3F6Q&psc=1&refRID=41EZYMFZXG4HR82F3F6Q

I built a bunch of these things back when Century Fox still had a plant in Oshkosh back in the 70's. Hein Werner moved to assembly of these to Waukesha after they closed the Oshkosh facility. Used to have a lot of problems with the spools sticking as I recall. I think I did make some changes to the spring to improve the spring force. Nothing like the slotted design I saw in some of the replies. I worked in engineering back then and played around with a bunch of different groove designs to try to improve the balancing of the spool to help keep it from sticking. They could have a fair amount of leakage if the fit between the spool and the body wasn't tight enough. I remember we had a special tool we used to face both sides of the gears so they would be parallel. We measured each gear and sorted them by size to match them to the gear pockets and lapped the gear into each unit. There were a couple different tractor manufactures using these back them. Pretty sure Bolens and Simplicity used them too.

Reminds me of the day I used Mrs. Ks bathtub to rinse a bear hide I was prepping for tanning. Bear grease is really sticky stuff. That didn't work out very well.

Got the engine and transmission oil changed, air and fuel filter replaced, deck removed and cleaned, chassis and deck greased, wheel weights and chains installed, fluid added to front tires, and plow blade installed. The 312-8 is ready for winter work.

Our lord is a merciful and forgiving God. You need to begin by forgiving your sef for your transgressions, big or small. That was one of the most difficult lessons I ever learned, but it is life altering. During my darkest days I learned the Serenity Prayer and if taken very literally and applied to your daily life it can be a positive influence. God, grant me the Serenity To accept the things I cannot change... Courage to change the things I can, And Wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time, Enjoying one moment at a time, Accepting hardship as the pathway to peace. Taking, as Christ did, this sinful world as it is, Not as I would have it. Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His will. That I may be reasonably happy in this life, And supremely happy with Him forever in the next. Amen.

Jason, you have my prayers for strength. I have a son who went through a lot of serious depression in college and continues to deal with it. With this COVID thing, he's been unemployed for 6 months after graduating with a double degree. He's working small jobs here and there, getting by. I ask you to pray for him. I can't say I understand what your going through. But I do understand that it's real. I understand when you say you know the resources and the talk, but it's important that you keep reaching out. Your belief in a greater God is a blessing, and I encourage you to focus on that belief. Make him your ROCK. You are the only one on your Gods plate. If your house has too many memories right now, go seek out your church or a shelter for the night. Change your scenery. PS go visit your Horse's with Clara. Surround yourself with the things you Love. They need you to care for them.

Not that I imagine either of you bathing, but I imagine it’s like Shrek and a not so ogre-ish Fiona having a fart bubble contest on occasion!

@Arnold Decker As long as we have your attention, do you mind if I dig into your memory bank a little? Of course these units are old and have a lot of time on them. Some of them are getting a little slow after the fluid warms up. What would be the heaviest oil that you would recommend using in these pumps?

Well the hood came off quite easily! The timing marks aren’t exactly how the manual shows, but I found what I needed. The gas tank decal is cool, does anyone know what it used to look like in it’s entirety? @Vinylguy?

A little how to for those who have never used a gum wheel to remove decals.

I wouldn't worry about replacing /moving that 857 solenoid. You're gonna sell it anyway so why bother. If it works leave it alone.

You did too nice of a job on that tractor, made a show piece out of it. Now you have to go out and buy another Wheel Horse to use.

I've got a 500 gallon tank that we get filled once every two years. I pour in whatever the label on the Stabil says (many containers worth). It's wonderful. No problems whatsoever with bad gas. Our gas Massey backhoe started right up last week after litterally sitting for 2 years.
  38. 4 points
I still add Stabil or SeaFoam to my gas for extended storage. I also shut the fuel off & run the carburetor dry for extended storage.

Its really amazing to me that there are units like this still floating around. I know we built a lot of them up through the 70's and before that but it still amazes me that they are still in demand and use after all this time has gone by. That is a beautiful restoration....

    Surprised you survived.....

It's likely larger so that people don't have to listen to the sound of a 4 cylinder as much.

That is a nice steering wheel! If it won't come off the shaft without a fight I guess you'll have to just keep the 312.

I run 1.5 to 2 oz of Seafoam per gallon and will run the carb dry when I expect the engine won'be used for 4 weeks or more.
