14 pointsJust before heading out this morning I decided to check the Red Square classifieds. I then see a RJ-58 for sale about 40 minutes from me. Well next thing I know I have a change of plans for the day, and I’m on my way to get an RJ ! This tractor will receive a full blown restoration over the winter.

9 pointsHead gasket was leaking on the 1076, so I pulled the head and this is what I found. So obviously I cleaned it all up and sanded the head to be sure it was flat And put it back together. Torqued the head and ran it for awhile and got it nice and warm, let it cool and retorqued the bolts. I'll check it again after some more run time.

8 pointsMy bench is the most important tool I have. Much of work I do involves long hours of tedious detailed work on it constantly in one spot such as when carving. That work requires that I have my upper body pretty much close and above work for leverage and control over the tools being used. Standing causes me to bend my back inevitably which is tough on it. Many times I merely lean my left hip on bench side at an angle in order to achieve the right position but that is also tough on the body. The best thing for those times is to sit, but for that I need at least one leg to be underneath bench so I can have my body directly above work. That is only possible in two areas of bench at the ends, specifically the left side since I am right handed. So I have for a long time been looking for an industrial swing out stool bracket. Not only they are rare, but also come at a premium. Finally scored one that did not cause me to put a mortgage on the house. It now makes my life so much easier, mounted on the perfect spot even allowing me to swing my body substantially over the work for better angles. Did have to be creative relocating the Emmert's tilt mechanism to allow bench to swing totally out of way, and machining a new stiffer rod for it will have to be done eventually. Finally also made a custom seat for my ever expanding behind.

7 pointsNext up was the carb on the Raider 12. And man was it nasty. The float needed adjustment, and I think it was sticking because at times I had gas leaking out from the front of the carb. Seems to run better now. So all in all it was a good day.

6 pointsWithout Shaw Du All. There would be no Wheel Horse ! The Speedex Tractor Corporation was founded in 1935 by Harold Pond, who is considered the developer of the first four wheel riding garden tractor in America. Harold Pond was associated in the late 1920s with Stanley W. Shaw of the Shaw Mfg. Company in Galesburg, Kansas, who fabricated walk behind garden tractors and outdoor power equipment from reclaimed motorcycle and automobile parts. Harold Pond, Elmer Pond and Glen Heilman all worked for Shaw at one time. These three dispersed to Ohio and Indiana to form their own companies and develop their own tractors. Harold Pond developed the Speedex line of tractors in Ravenna, Ohio. Harold's brother Elmer and his son Cecil developed the Wheel Horse line of tractors in the South Bend, Indiana area. Harold's brother-in-law Glen Heilman developed the Garden-All line of tractors in Mishawaka, Indiana. Glen was married to Harold's wife's sister. These three, who grew up in Galesburg, Kansas, were responsible for many innovations in the lawn aNd garden tractor industry.

5 pointsThe seat addition to the bench also makes it perfect to use another one of my favorite vises mostly used for plane making or carving odd shaped items that need constant repositioning. It is held on the bench through one of the hold fast collars and it rotates 360 degrees. Jaws also swivel to hold odd shaped items.

5 pointsSuccess! Trans is flushed and filled, shift boot replaced, and i bypassed the safety switch on the shifter. Got the all the leaves out front mulched up with the 42 inch rear discharge, im sure my neighbors were wonding why i was mowing in reverse for an hour 😂

5 pointsMy husband and his uncle where at a sale in July 2018 and this Shaw #5 was for sell along with many others and nothing was very high. His uncle gave something like $350.00 for this! His uncle keep it a few months then sold it. All his uncle did was got a new sediment bowl gasket. Husband bought a spare engine and rear wheels. He still has them if there is any one interested. There was a plow behind the tractor that his uncle sold off it. The bow thingy on the back my husband still has. His uncle was going to scrap it! All three are Shaw Tractors!

5 pointsOutdoorsy ??? I have been known to climb a tree before daylight and not come down till after dark. Today, I still climb trees, but only for about a 90 minute perch. Rugged?? Last night after watching my Grandsons football game for two hours in the 46 degree dampness., My son had to help me climb down the steep bleacher steps. Harpoons darts, lag bolts and welding??? These are the terms the surgeon used when I asked him to explain the Eurolift procedure in terms a mechanic could understand. Not true Jim, having spent my youth deep in the Appalachian Mountains, I confess to using thistle weed, ginseng, fermented maze, and morels I have no memory of using any of those metaphoric hallucinogenic mushrooms you refer to. Now I gotta go work on Mrs. Ks van. It needs a warsh job and an oril change.

4 pointsToday was a firewood day. Put a couple favorites to work. This could count as a side shot Saturday!

4 pointsIt’s actually more rusty than it looks in the pictures. My wife actually said “if you buy it you’re going to have to restore it back to shiny red!” I couldn’t believe those words came out of her mouth!

4 pointsI have bouts of swallowing difficulties and had the intake stretched a few times. Well the last time I had the exhaust scoped out all the way to the converter, I suggested that they do the intake at the same time, just do the top first. The nurse said that if I wake up with a $h!tty taste in my mouth they did it wrong.

4 pointsAll kinds of excitement around Pullstart Stables today! Norman will never need to squat again...
-
4 pointsKev, after you turn 50 and have to get your first exhaust check up you need to stay away from those jalapenos a day or two before you do the pre- clean out . Trust me on this one.

3 pointsI don't know if any harm would be done. As you know, when air is compressed there is usually water in the system. The alcohol is cheap so I added it.
-
3 pointsI found this site hunting for parts for the 314 and I found someone who makes all new decals so I stripped down and did full paint and stickered it back up to the best of my knowledge witch at this point is limited but slowly learning about them. This site has been most of my info.
-
3 pointsSince you are up there in cold country, read the instructions about adding air brake fluid (alcohol) to the bags. Easy to do before installation, a pain later.
-
3 pointsI actually did a full re paint. Took about 4 months. Top to bottom. Not my best work. But I do like the outcome and very proud of this rig. Have the 48" deck and bagger as can be seen in OG photo but due to cold new England weather the snowblower resto came 1st.

3 pointsWorking on the trans oil change between tows today. Go it jacked up draining right now. Drain plug was finger tight which is kinda wierd. But going to put some diesel fuel in it and jack up the rear and let it run in 3rd high range for a few minutes then drain the diesel, change the shift boot, and top it back off. Gotta remove the shifter once its drained and flushed.

3 pointsHere is what happened to me some years back. Doctor suspected I had some pollips in my intestines due to some bleeding, so he scheduled a test for it in a local hospital. I had to do the usual torturous preparation drinking the stuff and cleaning out for like 36 hours. I go to the hospital and after I have my gown on, nurse that does all the preparation comes in. I am not really paying attention as she comes in , but I hear " Hi Cas how are you? God how long as it been? So immediately I turn my head and wouldn't you know, its someone I went to school with. So after a little chat a hug and a kiss she proceeds to instruct me to lay down in the fetal position and states that they will pump air into me for the test and that I must hold it. Great, the embarrassment meter is now just about pegged on maximum. Sure enough I hear the put put of some compressor starting and she sticks the damn hose in the exhaust as again she stress that I must hold it. It felt like even my ear lobes were inflating. They do the test which was like an x-ray that seemed like an eternity. Its over now and she says that now I can get up and go to the bathroom. All I know is that I merely lifted my head off the table to start getting up and Vesuvius erupted. With my head lifted off the table I see her jumping back. I get up for what it seemed took for ever and walk to the bathroom sounding like a dragster doing a burnout. I don't know what all of that was, I did a clean out for two days. On the way out she comes again wishing everything goes well with me giving me another hug and a kiss while I could not even look at her so embarrassed I was.

3 points@pullstart yep for the Porter Cable. As Jableman said, one piece of the puzzle at a time. I now have the correct seat, a parts transmission (the one on it is stuck in gear and had a lot of water in it) rear fenders, and a rear hub. A K181 8 hp starter generator engine is on my wish list, but it might stay with the Briggs rope start if the Briggs runs when I get to it. (Actually I have 3 projects I wish I could find K181 starter/generator engines for). In the upper storage loft/room above my shop I have a large box for each of my upcoming projects. I have a notebook/spreadsheet of what I know each project needs (at least the obvious things) While my wife is supportive/tolerant of this hobby, since I'm gradually buying parts for them there is not such a huge expenditure or a lot of boxes in the mail at one that might raise an eyebrow.
-
3 pointsSince you picked that up as a parts tractor, who knows what its history is. The shifter forks are at the top of the transmission and the rails they slide on would be an area to rust if it set unused for a few years. After 30+ years the rails may just need a good clean up, or as other have said once they got to where they didn't slide easy someone forced it..and broke a fork. As Steve's video shows, there are really not difficult. You could get away with only pulling one hub and the hitch pin. Nut after 30+ years it deserves a good cleanout. besides the video, there's lots of good on line help here. I've done 3 different tranny's now and these guys have been a blessing on every one. Gaskets, seals, bearing and a few gears are available from one of our Vendors Wheelhorse parts and More. A-Z Tractor would also probable have a good used shift fork. He's great and doesn't sell a used part if it's worn out.

-
3 pointsInteresting screen name considering my initials... I have an 8 speed laying for parts that should have a good fork if you need it. I don't know how much they changed over the years. This one was likely late 70s/early 80s but I've never checked. Opening these up is pretty easy except for the wheel hubs and rear hitch pin. Nature's rust welding tends to keep those in place. Best NOT to use a standard 3 jaw puller. Set up an old hub as a puller using 5 points of pull through the lug holes. Penetrating fluids and heat will be your friends. @stevasaurus has some great info pinned at the top of the transmission section. Watch the videos if you haven't already.
-
3 pointsThe transmission gurus should be along with more detailed pointers for ya but it sounds like the high / low fork has broken. There's quite a bit of leverage from the long shift handle and someone probably tried forcing it into gear when the gears didn't easily mesh. When that happens it's always best to release the clutch pedal briefly and push back on it. That will usually allow it to shift easily into gear by realigning the gear teeth into a better position. If the fork is broken you'll need to open her up and replace it.

3 pointsColonoscopy is a walk in the park compared to what I woke up with after my pancreatic cancer surgery. I had a big garden hose, also called a feeding tube coming out of my stomach. I had 3 drain tubes with bags hanging off them also coming out of my stomach. Few days later they decided 3 wasnt enough and gave me a 4th. I had another tube with a bag on the end of it coming out of " lil d-mac" and I had another tube with another bag on the end going up through my nose, down my throat, and into my stomach. Not to mention I was filleted open like a fish and stapled back together. Had a PICC line that goes into your arm through a vein, then to your heart. I also had an IV in my neck that they stitched on. They best part was 5 weeks of eating nothing. No food orally. I was allowed black coffee, water, or broth. Almost 40 days of being fed through an IV. Sounds bad dosnt it? All that physical suffering. Now imagin what it does to you mentally and financially. Think that hurts huh ? Now imagin what it does to your loved ones as well. Your not the only one suffering. So fasting for a colonoscopy sounds like a walk in the park. Especially if it will prevent going through what I went through. DO NOT TAKE YOUR HEALTH FOR GRANTED GENTLEMEN !
