A-Z Tractor is now offering an axle hub for the 1" and 1 1/8" axles. This is called a repair hub. This hub is manufactured with a tapered hub that clamps down on the axle when installed. This will help with axles that have a worn keyway and axles that might be wore from bad hubs. Also this hub is very easy to remove for future repairs. To purchase these hubs you can either call A-Z Tractor at 1-717-821-2542 or you can go on the website at a-ztractor.com and purchase them on the sight. To find the repair hub on the sight just type in the part number of the hub you are replacing or type in repair hub. When these hubs are installed properly under most conditions the hub will not turn on the shaft even if there is no key installed. These hubs sell for $110 each and when you are purchasing you have to select the correct one for your shaft size. The same mounting hub is used just a different center shaft hub for the different size shafts.

I have a cheapo Campbell Hausfield sandblaster my neighbor gave me years ago that I've never used. Today, I made a duct tape and cardboard blasting cabinet. It worked like a charm, or at least long enough to strip the nasty, rusty wheels on the snowblower I'm restoring. The best part is, I'm pretty happy with the way most of the "cabinet" turned out. So now I can break down the cardboard, lay it flat and have a decent template for a real blasting cabinet. Redneck engineering at its finest. My Dad taught me well.

This is an 18 auotomatic my grandfather gave me years ago. I have been recently inspired to work on it again. I brought it back to life with a kohler ch 18. I cant believe the power and response of this big old tractor. Didnt know if anyone else here did a swap.

It's really simple. If you suspect a carb problem, Pull the carb! Do a full tear down and clean out. EVERY TIME. Sure you can squirt some bug juice into the throat and hope for the best. And maybe 1 out of 10 times you'll succeed. The thing is, these carbs have maybe 10 internal parts, at best. Pull the carb, do a full clean out. EVERY TIME.

Without Shaw Du All. There would be no Wheel Horse ! The Speedex Tractor Corporation was founded in 1935 by Harold Pond, who is considered the developer of the first four wheel riding garden tractor in America. Harold Pond was associated in the late 1920s with Stanley W. Shaw of the Shaw Mfg. Company in Galesburg, Kansas, who fabricated walk behind garden tractors and outdoor power equipment from reclaimed motorcycle and automobile parts. Harold Pond, Elmer Pond and Glen Heilman all worked for Shaw at one time. These three dispersed to Ohio and Indiana to form their own companies and develop their own tractors. Harold Pond developed the Speedex line of tractors in Ravenna, Ohio. Harold's brother Elmer and his son Cecil developed the Wheel Horse line of tractors in the South Bend, Indiana area. Harold's brother-in-law Glen Heilman developed the Garden-All line of tractors in Mishawaka, Indiana. Glen was married to Harold's wife's sister. These three, who grew up in Galesburg, Kansas, were responsible for many innovations in the lawn aNd garden tractor industry.

These questions about horsepower and torque come up regularly. Conceptually, the attributes of each are pretty simple to understand but the anecdotes and on-the-road automotive analogies sometimes cloud things. Horsepower is a rate measurement. As such, it is a way of expressing how fast work can be performed. It is not a contrived unit like is sometimes implied when we say “you can’t measure horsepower, but you can measure torque.” Higher horsepower translates to being able to do work faster. So if you were able to max out the power of your engine by mowing grass really fast, you’d be able to run through the same patch of grass with the same deck twice as fast with a 16 hp engine than you can with an 8 hp engine. If you’re mowing with a 36” deck and 8 hp acceptably on your lawn, you’d probably be able to use a 7.5’ deck under the same conditions if you upsized to a 20 hp engine. A lot of times we like to say that torque is what gets the job done, but that’s not really the case if you care at all about how fast you can get work done. Torque measures rotational force. It is completely independent of any speed concerns. In cases where max torque is generated at zero RPM it’s really not that beneficial of a statistic. When you’re trying to break loose a big rusted nut with a monster breaker bar and it won’t budge you might be generating a heck of a lot of torque, but you’re not doing any measurable mechanical work. Older engines seldom had torque specs presented, so they don't usually enter the conversation on these enthusiast sites. Newer tractors have torque displayed since there was a controversy and lawsuit a decade or two ago that was a consequence of some manufacturers reporting horsepower values at speeds other than the rated speeds, so the values were sometimes inflated. Publishing peak torque on the other hand doesn't require it be presented at rated speed. Torque values became the default marketing statistic as a result. it is a much less useful number than the power number. Through speed manipulations (gearing!) we can multiply the available torque by decreasing the speed of the output shaft on the downstream side of a transmission. Add enough gear reduction, and even a little k91 can tow a monster camper trailer up a steep mountain. It will be slow, but it can eventually do it. Hook the same camper to a 350 hp engine in a big pickup and it will also get it up the mountain, but has the option of doing it a lot faster because it can generate more horsepower. In either case, the camper needs the same torque applied to the drive wheels to physically pull it up the hill but the big engine can turn them a heck of a lot faster. How does this translate to our little tractors? It only takes a fraction of a horsepower to move a tractor around your yard at the speeds we care about. We can approximate it if we want…let’s say it takes a 25 lb push to push a Commando 8 tractor through the yard if you were just shoving on the back of the seat. Let’s move it at 3 mph. That calculates to 0.2 hp of actual power required to move it at constant speed. Seriously, 1/5-hp. The engine, if it was doing the job instead of your leg muscles, would see about the same power requirement. That leaves a lot of power in reserve to do other things. There are some efficiency losses through the transmission (that’s why it gets hot when it is being used), so the load on the engine is a little higher but still it’s pretty darn low. Double the speed, double the power needed. Deflate the tires and make it harder to propel, the power requirement increases. Incline the ground so that the constant push won’t keep it moving at the same speed and if the engine can’t respond by generating more power - or your legs give out if you’re still pushing - the tractor comes to a stop and the horsepower goes to zero. Horsepower and rate intertwined. Clearly, the implements are where the power goes with snowblowers and mowers being the biggest power suckers. Offhand I don’t know how to calculate their power requirements but it probably isn’t very complicated. Very little power is used to propel the tractor. Hydro tractors are constantly squishing thick fluid through small passageways so tend to use a little bit more power just keeping themselves primed for action, but even then it’s pretty small. If you need to mow more and faster, you need a more powerful engine. If not concerned with speed, then lower power will do it and you’ll chug around for more time. Either way, you’ll have done the same amount of work when finished. Steve

My bench is the most important tool I have. Much of work I do involves long hours of tedious detailed work on it constantly in one spot such as when carving. That work requires that I have my upper body pretty much close and above work for leverage and control over the tools being used. Standing causes me to bend my back inevitably which is tough on it. Many times I merely lean my left hip on bench side at an angle in order to achieve the right position but that is also tough on the body. The best thing for those times is to sit, but for that I need at least one leg to be underneath bench so I can have my body directly above work. That is only possible in two areas of bench at the ends, specifically the left side since I am right handed. So I have for a long time been looking for an industrial swing out stool bracket. Not only they are rare, but also come at a premium. Finally scored one that did not cause me to put a mortgage on the house. It now makes my life so much easier, mounted on the perfect spot even allowing me to swing my body substantially over the work for better angles. Did have to be creative relocating the Emmert's tilt mechanism to allow bench to swing totally out of way, and machining a new stiffer rod for it will have to be done eventually. Finally also made a custom seat for my ever expanding behind.

Maybe the change was because Captain Ahab retired from whaling. Original Type A ATF and early Dexron used Sperm Whale oil as an ingredient...

PO is previous owner. I believe earlier WH autos used ATF and later used motor oil. I am not sure on the models and dates. Both fluids work . They can be converted, but should be flushed to remove all the fluid. Best to stay with what you find in yours. Red is ATF. Amber is motor oil.

Ok youngsters and the rest of the WWII baby boomers. Had some water fountain issues in April.. Catheter for 7 days problems resolved . July 18th rust in the pipe again , catheter for 2 months and 4 days . Trips back and forth to water fountain mechanics. Mechanics decided they needed to check inside of bladder and prostate . O what fun camera in place of catheter. This past Tuesday I had a Prostate chunk ectomie. Six 1 inch incisions by mechanics using robots. Home now in pain . Make Sure your Drs. check you PSA annually . No big C in prostate . According to mechanics , after removal of this after of this catheter water fountain should be at full pressure.

Like most decisions to change working designs and products. They are probably driven by cost reduction. Jim makes a good point above. Motor oil requires more warm up time during cold weather use. Warm up is probably a good practice for the engine and hydro regardless of the fluid used. All my hydros have 10W30 motor oil. 1971 Eaton 6, 1974 Sundstrand, 1980, 1986, 1988 Eaton 1100s Wheel Horse warns to prevent damage the Eaton 1100 must be warmed for 10 minutes before use. The lift on one of my Eaton 1100s will not operate until after the 10 minute warm up. The other two lift immediately.

Be careful with the solutions you use. Some of the ultra-sonic cleaners have heaters on them to make them work more effectively. Mix heat with chemicals that have low flash point, and you could have a problem. I just checked Evapo Rust, looks like you shouldn't have an issue based on the SDS sheet. https://www.orisonmarketing.com/SDS PDF/SDS Evaporust.pdf

Colonoscopy is a walk in the park compared to what I woke up with after my pancreatic cancer surgery. I had a big garden hose, also called a feeding tube coming out of my stomach. I had 3 drain tubes with bags hanging off them also coming out of my stomach. Few days later they decided 3 wasnt enough and gave me a 4th. I had another tube with a bag on the end of it coming out of " lil d-mac" and I had another tube with another bag on the end going up through my nose, down my throat, and into my stomach. Not to mention I was filleted open like a fish and stapled back together. Had a PICC line that goes into your arm through a vein, then to your heart. I also had an IV in my neck that they stitched on. They best part was 5 weeks of eating nothing. No food orally. I was allowed black coffee, water, or broth. Almost 40 days of being fed through an IV. Sounds bad dosnt it? All that physical suffering. Now imagin what it does to you mentally and financially. Think that hurts huh ? Now imagin what it does to your loved ones as well. Your not the only one suffering. So fasting for a colonoscopy sounds like a walk in the park. Especially if it will prevent going through what I went through. DO NOT TAKE YOUR HEALTH FOR GRANTED GENTLEMEN !

Evaporust is expensive, but its great for derusting small and hard to clean parts. (saves fingers from the wire brush wheel) A while back I derusted an older kitchen utensil for my wife. Now I get asked to clean all kinds of things. I use my wife's small jewelry ultrasonic cleaner for carb parts. She hasn't caught on to me yet or it would be I sure need to get a larger one.

At around 50 ish I had my first one ---- next time at early 60s I said I WAS NOT drinking a gallon of ... stuff, so even tho he sent me home with a jug of it I stopped at wally world and got one of those 10oz bottles of Magnesium Citrate - 10oz is MUCH easier to go down and boy does it clean you out. Didnt tell the dr and he never said anything. But, wait, at 70yrs I had to have a quad bypass done (angina, not heart attack) and on the third day after, I had severe stomach pain with staff poo-pooing it saying normal. Finally convinced them something was wrong and after a quick trip to xray, I found my self waking up in my room with a colostomy bag hanging off me!! Had a 'blow out' on my colon, very unusual so I was told by about a dozen drs. Luckily? I was able to have it removed after 3 months --- sure did mess with by bathroom visits for about a year after. The by pass was a breeze compared to the -- other! So here I am now at 80yrs and beginning to wonder whats next!

I am fortunate enough to have an open minded Dr. that will listen to the patient and give you a call-back if you need to talk to him. I had my annual wellness check-up a couple weeks ago. There wasn't anything out of the ordinary but the Dr. changed my blood pressure prescription for no apparent reason. After a few days on the new BP pill I was feeling run down and couldn't do anything without feeling exhausted. Got out the wife's old BP monitor and found the BP was about 20 points above normal and my pulse was 48! I called the Dr. to see why the change was made and he said he had noticed some slight tremors in my hands and wanted to have me on a beta blocker to address this as well as BP. Long story short I went back to the old BP pill and don't give a $h!t about the hand tremors. After about three days of down time I'm back to normal (or as close as I have ever come). Guess next time I will ask why anything is being changed.
