Put most of them in their new home. Two more to go
  2. 12 points
Well, with being stuck home for a while now,{ I don't go many places anyway },I decided to resurrect a few of my " someday" horses that have been sitting in my bone yard.First one was a 312-8.Mowed with it a couple years ago, stuck it in my barn, then outside when I needed the room indoors.New battery, new rubber fuel lines and fuel filter, oil change in engine and tranny.Runs like a new tractor now.Second was a 1979 C-161.New battery, new fuel lines and fuel filter, new shifter boot, new condenser, filed the points,Fresh oil in engine and tranny,One new Carlisle rear tire, and sandblasted and primed and painted the rim that the new tire went on.Runs great.Third one started yesterday,a 1972 Raider 12.Pulled the cooling shroud off, found a very impressive mouse nest.Pulled the drain plug on the tranny.About a qt of water came out before the coffee shake looking gear lube. Will drain the engine oil today and probably install new fuel lines and fuel filter. The point of this story is how the simplicity and quality has changed since that Raider rolled off the assembly line and the 312-8 did.The basics are just about identical.Kohler engine and heavy transmissions.Frames and front axles seem about the same.Noticable difference in the gauge of the sheet metal..Raider 12 and C-161 have the manual hood latch near the dash.312-8 has the flimsy rubber hood latches.Decent hood hinges on the Raider and C-161.Wobbly sheet metal hood hinges on the 312-8.Simple PTO lever on the Raider with no safety switch.Complicated lever assembly with flimsy plastic bushings and PTO wiring nightmare on the C-161 and 312-8.The list goes on and on.Ya know, maybe it's a good thing Wheel Horse went under. If they were produced today, they would be comparable to a Craftsman or MTD.Like everything in life...…..things sure have changed.Still love these little red tractors.Stay safe everyone.

Got the new 16hp engine for the C-160 today, and it's mostly hooked up. Throttle, choke, and exhaust to go. Along with fuel lines. There's one wire that seems to be missing from the equation . I've got a spot for one to go, but I've. seemed to run out of wires. I want to thank @richmondred01 for rebuilding this engine and having available for sale. Hope to have this running by tomorrow night, if all goes as expected .

Came home from work to find the roofing crew still hard at work putting a new roof on the house. Watched them finish up, and by the time they left it was about 45 minutes to dark. Hadn't mowed a large area of my place this year because I let the wild flowers grow and go to seed, so I pulled the C-120 out of hibernation and tried mowing with it for the first time this year. Made a pass and once I reached a part with an incline, it died out. No fuel in the carb. Pressurized the tank and filled the bowl up and it ran fine until I got to the same spot again. Guess the fuel pump is on its last legs. Parked it and got the C-160 out. Pulled the tiller and idler assembly off of it, and then pulled the deck off the C-120 and installed it. Never mowed with it before, and man is the hydraulic lift nice! Way gutsier than the K321 on the C-120. Finished up mowing right before it got pitch black out. I need to get headlights in it!

Update on Scottie: Since Scottie's last surgery in February, we have been working on retraining his bladder and urethra. We were scheduled to see his surgeon in later March early April for a follow up and to make a plan moving forward, however with the COVID-19 pandemic going on, Scottie's appointment was cancelled and never rescheduled. It was a blessing in disguise as we were able to listen to Scott's body and go accordingly to his own needs. Everything was going good for his retraining, he was able to be capped for about 2 months and he was able to pee without difficulty. His body woke him up at night to go to the bathroom, he was able to urinate and empty out his bladder without having much in his bladder. Everything was going the way Scottie wanted. It was not until this past Monday May 11, 2020 that Scottie woke up and was not feeling well. He had a terrible stomach cramp and an uncontrollable bladder spasm that was not reacting to his bladder spasm medication. I monitored him and he was running a low grade fever of 100.9 and he was unable to keep sips of water down. I called his surgeon and asked him if I could give him the antibiotic that I had from his previous hospitalization. That is when we were told to go the ER in Rochester to have an ultrasound done for his kidneys and to have a urine culture done. We went to the ER and it was confirmed that Scottie did in fact have a bladder infection and infection in his kidney. They sent us home with the antibiotic we had at home for 14 days and told us that they would call us back after the culture in three days. Since we have returned home Monday, Scottie has had fevers and has thrown up. The ER nurse called me today and informed me that the antibiotic that we were sent home was found to be ineffective and that they had to start him on another antibiotic. He started that today and I need to keep monitoring him for decreased urine output, persistent fevers, throwing up, and decreased intake to call the on-call urology and go back to the ER and be admitted for IV antibiotics. We are praying that this new antibiotic works and that Scottie can stay home and not go to the hospital for the IV antibiotics. If all goes well by the end of summer Scottie will no longer have the supra pubic catheter, but only time will tell if he will form the scar tissue in the urethra. Thank you for keeping our family and our son Scottie in your thoughts and prayers and we will continue to update you.

Guy had a C120 hydro minus engine listed for a song, 4 miles away. I thought heck, maybe parts I need or a complete donor trans for the 1277. Came home with this. I now have two working 8 speeds, a potential working hydro, and a crap ton of parts. Oh, and he threw in a 42” mower deck with no holes. I don’t even know what the heck I bought🤣 according to the decals a C120, C81, and two mystery machines. Any guesses?

Stopped by to visit with Rodger for a while after work. He was sitting outside waiting on a guy to bring by a 1/16 scale Farmall M that he purchased to complete his collection of model letter series tractors. When Jerry got there with the M, he also had a 1/16 Super M-TA and Farmall 100 with him. I gave Rodger first chance, but when he didn't want them I told Jerry to give me time to get to the bank tomorrow and then bring them by the shop and I would have cash in hand for him. Then came home and got on eBay and got a good deal on this little A and Cub. Is there anyone here who collects these little things, or maybe other scale models, who could give a guy an idea or two of the best way to display them, I mean I can build a simple shelf and sit them on it, but I know there's got to be a better way

Hello All, bought 4 tractors yesterday to get the one I wanted... not into it for much money. The one I wanted is an all original 1257 with a real solid 42" deck... , 2nd tractor is a 1257 with the trans pulled---tractor is hanging on edge of parts only.... it really looks like it was dragged out of a swamp. 3rd tractor is an engineless 416a (Onan) with the full instrumentation dash but the standard front axle and the wimpy Eaton 700 / Manual lift---I may repower with a yank start something or other for whatever reason. The 4rth tractor is restoreable… I THINK its on the "rarer" side.... needs plenty of love. But I want to find a Tecumseh lover to get it too... Im going to just give it away.... Pictures and model number will be posted after I pick it up. So.... if you just can't live without a Tecumseh between the fenders and are looking for a project and are willing to come to central CT make your case here and the best job of "begging" for it (lol) will get it. Tony

How about a few pictures from yesterday's progress? She's a runner! With a noticeable seat of the pants difference in power after the rebuild. In fact her maiden first few feet was a second gear wheelie! I slipped on the bare seat pan dumping the clutch.

ok it does say other scale models above, not trying off topic, I build 1/48 airplanes, since I was 10, I used to do alot of custom builds for people. my old house, the basement ceiling was loaded with cool old 50's aurora model planes, now they are boxed. I do have all these on display that I built in the new house.

Just trying to get them all up there for now. When I get there permanently, it will be put into service. There is another gt14 in the back that is going to be a worker. Got another engine to put on it and it should be good to go. Then I can finish Skittles

Well I went to pick up my tires and wheels. Im happy with them. I couldnt beat the price ! He gave me 2 pair to sell. The one pair is the same set I got for the rears. Firestone Town & Country 6 x 12 M/S and the other pair are Interurban 78 6 x 12 M/S. Tires are NOS. Not exactly sure how old I didnt ask, other then being dirty there is nothing wrong with them. Not sure what they are worth or even how to ship them. Thoughts? First 3 photos are my tires. You can use my set of Firestones so what they look like cleaned up. The photos after are they extra sets he gave me to show. They are dirty as they have been sitting in storage a number of years. Forth and fifth pic is the Interurban's Six and seven are Firestone. My understanding is Interurban is Firestone as well.

Today’s update... all back together! however having rebuilt a few and done extensive mods - even an 'expert' can get it wrong! This this has been 'assembled' about seven times. 1. put main shaft in, both forks, forgot both sliding gears - so shift forks back out every time (remember those fiddly bearings and the lock pin - yeah it falls into the bottom every time) 2. put main shaft and sliding gears in, couldn't get top sliding shaft in - couldn't see why 3. as above, but with shaft in - tried to put cluster gear shaft in - wouldn't go - pulled apart - shift forks out again. 4. put all gears in but then noticed 2/3 gear =s were swapped, no chance of cluster gear going in. 5. all gears in... phew... whats this washer????? 6. added small shim on input shaft - basically back to square one as after putting the high/low gears in, this should go next, before the main input shaft. 7. success Maybe the manual might have helped - I did look at Steves videos yesterday, but I can see he suffers the same challenges - he does a good job of not cussing - I swore at those shift fork ball bearings a lot!!! ....tried all gears and made sure both housings slid together with a fresh gasket, axle seals and input shaft seal are done, waiting for brake shaft seal. and more goodies arrived - new plug lead, air cleaner, fuel hose, rubber bung for fuel tank and the input shaft seal.

Well I finally got him to send me photos of the progress on my tires and wheels. Took the tires and wheels to my Nieces husband business. He told me he had some tires for the rears and I ordered a pair for the front. He said he give me the rears, and mentioned he wanted to get rid of all this tires. I told him I am interested but have yet to get a number from him. Im working on it. Anyways here they are, he still is working on the front as the rims were in bad shape. He gonna try to get tubes for them. I wanted to paint them white but all they had was black. So he painted them black. They are still pitted and it shows through the paint but they look way better and I didnt have to do it ! So hope fully I get them back soon with a price on the tires.

Thank you for the update. The Stertz family will continue to pray for Scottie and the rest of the gang. Please let me know if there is anything we can do for him/you. God Bless you Scottie you are loved and cared for! Give your mom a HUGE HUG—she is an angel who loves you very much. Words cannot describe her care, heartache, and love for you all through this trial. Just imagine how much more God loves you? It’s Never easy going through a trial but coming out on the other side sometimes we get the privilege to see why and other times not but He never leaves our side.

I like that. Depends how many you have or plan to get. Also what kid of space you have in your house available for it. I have a lot of similar stuff but space here is at a premium specially floor space. Many are in my office in small bookcases around the ceiling. They always look best when in small spaces made to fit them.

They were headed my direction... Zach got another opportunity to drive his GT-14 and pull the wagon. I need to make him a hitch pin setup that is easier for him to work. He wants to hook it up by himself but he isn’t strong enough to pull the spring clip...yet. Hey...at least in that pic from Kevin, Rylee was practicing safe social distancing with herself

One of the jobs for my 14-8 is moving trailers around. So far, I have gotten by with a 1 7/8" ball, and a stack of washers in the stock hitch, that had been drilled to fit the trailer ball. Only problem is, the trailers I have now have a hitch weight that is testing the limits of the stock hitch. Also, the hitch is really too low, causing the hitch jack to drag on the ground. Since my truck has a 2" receiver hitch, I figured a 2" receiver hitch for the tractor would be a good idea. Yes, I could have bought one on e-bay, but I'll have more fun building my own. So, this is a small build thread for a receiver hitch. I've used 2 x 2 x 3/8 angle iron, 2 x 2 x 1/4 square tube, and 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 1/4 square tube. The receiver hitch will replace the top clamp bars on my rear Tach O Matic bracket. Paint will be Rustolium IH Red. Here are the pieces roughed out: Funny thing about the receiver piece. I started with a piece of tubing that had a weld bead down the inside. I had it about 1/2 way filed down when my neighbor stopped by to see what I was doing. "Just a minute" he says. and walked into his shop. When he came back, he had a completed receiver in his hand. Hands it to me saying "This will be easier". Seems he had acquired two or three somewhere along the line. First test fitting on the tractor showed that the back of the receiver needed to be cleared for the tool box: After clearancing: Now to finish the weld prep and tack it together for another test fit.

Why is it Richie, that one of my favorite GT-14’s on the planet (Skittles) is tucked away like it is going into hibernation I would think you’d want to be using that a little more regularly(I.E. right by the doors😉) That storage space looks AWESOME, and quite functional. WELL done

Ordered new chain, and those shaft collars off the old internet. Couldnt find the closed end kind so I got the open ended ones. I am not sure what I need for the front end besides new tie rod ends. The spindles slide into the ends on the axle. I think I need some kind of bushings or washers. I am not sure what they are all called or wear to get them. The shaft size is 7/8ths. Washer and bushing on top and bottom? Put a coat of primer on the frame today. Would like to get the front end assembled so I can put it on the ground when the wheels are ready.

Yesterday got the leanto roof felted. Got that done by lunch time, so started on the next job. New lids for the coal bunker. I got two 14ft lengths of 3/4" x 5" T&G when I got the Stirling board. So I cut that into the required lengths. Good bit of planning there. Two 4" pieces of scrap off each plank. To be honest, just lucky. Today I assembled the lids and felted them. There's been two pine bed frame sides in the workshop loft ever since I built it. Those went to make the front of the bunker frame. Just don't tell SWMBO. The original front one went to the back and they are now secured in place. Need some hinges and screws, so hopefully I'll get those tomorrow. Also need two boards for the sides.

Everything you need to know...pretty easy if you buy a couple of tools. and Yes...lap the valves.
  41. 3 points
K181 valves are not adjustable. If the gap is insufficient you have to grind/file some off the end of the valve stem. (Go easy i have a noticeable tick on one i took off a bit too much). Too big a gap you have to buy new valve.

I purchased compression ring pliers for small fuel line a few weeks ago. Used them for the first time the other night on the Bobcat engine. They are a simple concept, but I really like them so far. It is much easier than installing a bulky traditional style hose clamp. Give them a try if you need to install new or replacement fuel lines. I also purchased a few bulk lengths of common hose sizes. Check out my channel: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX61KjaMraBMgVo-wK5bFQQ It reminds me of the old "Power Block" television program that used to air shows like Hot Rod TV, Trucks and Shade Tree mechanic. It's only lacking a few things, notably Courtney Hansen, a large budget and good editing.

The positve ground maybe the issue issue for your charging system. You can test your regulator. Hook up your multimeter to the battery. 12.6 is fully charged. Running voltage should be higher maybe 14. If not run a jumper wire from the F terminal of the regulator to a good ground. You should hear the engine work a bit harder and Voltage should go up.

You should be able to get a shifter boot from Wheel Horse parts and more. Great people. In our vendor section. Horse manual transmissions are not super fussy what they get for oil. I personally run 80w 90 dinosaur box store grade oil in all of ours. Big thing is to raise the front end as much as you can safely do so while draining because there is a hump in the center of the bottom of the transmission. Also is a good idea to do a flush with diesel or k1. Then fill with your favorite oil.
