11 pointsJust wanted to say Happy Anniversary to my wife Chris. 49 years of putting up with me, and I have the scars to prove it. Happy Anniversary Chris.
-
11 pointsWell here we go with my again. I have to say if you come across a C-160 hydro, they are the perfect combo of power, usability and are simple to and maintain. Mine has never let me down and the hydraulic lift simplifies the use of any attachment. I tried to use a snow thrower on my Charger 12 with the manual lift. My left arm is now 2" longer than my right arm, lets just say that I won't do that again.

7 pointsThere are some extreme words of wisdom somewhere in this!. But, it must require the Rock and Rye and lawn chair to truly comprehend them.
-
7 pointsI'm thinking you won't like that tractor and you should send it down here to Virginia But...I could be wrong!!!
-
7 pointsSteering wheel centre boss done this morning. Looks neater than the bashed wheel centre. Will keep moisture out of the wheel shaft too so no seizing.
-
7 pointsC-160 No shaker Less "tinny" Easier to get to the rockshaft to connect attachments Easier to grease the steering support that a lot of people forget about
-
6 points@Herder here you go. I do recall, it was advertised as $150 and he gave me $50 back after we shook hands on the deal. There are some loose tins, but it’s all there. The hood is quite tweaked, but I have two others from C-101’s to choose from. The hour meter says 1283 and I believe it.... At least they weren’t afraid to grease it!
-
6 pointsYah right and he gave you another 50 off for your good looks.... yah happens to me ALLL the time!

6 pointsA kohler is cooled/ lubricated by the dipper on the connecting rod so rpm is important, after a rebuild i run my engines wide open throttle, no load 3600rpm for 1 hour. Dump the oil and replace, then run the next 5 hours hard under load, full throttle 3600rpm to finish break in, i usually pull a 1 bottom plow. You want the heat load to seat the rings and valves. I have built dozens of Engines doing this without failure. If it blows up at this point you either put it together wrong or you had a bad part from the beginning, babying it will only prolong the inevitable. Not putting enough heat load on the rings will only increase the likelihood that it will burn oil and puff white/blue smoke when running after your "break in" remember kohlers use splash lubrication to oil the cam and crank they were designed to run at 3600rpm so these components can stay lubricated. As far as break in oil i use sae 30 in the cheapest brand available, $1.99/qt. Your going to dump in 1 hr. Then i switch to a better brand for the next 5 hours and beyond.
-
6 pointsIf I get it running, you guys might not like me for the price I paid. I think it was $100 or $150 all said and done I can’t recall. Either way, the guy gave me $50 back after we were loaded up and I was on my way out the drive. He said I paid him too much, after he realized I was truly a collector, not trying to make money off him.
-
6 pointsJust my I am not a fan of the shaker plate engine mounts. A gear drive may be OK for plowing or blowing snow on long runs, But for the five short (100ft) driveways I plow, the hydraulic transmission and hydraulic lift is a must. I probably reverse direction and raise the plow over a hundred times while clearing these driveways and mailboxes. I also add foot control to all my hydros so I have one hand to steer and one hand to operate the lift.
-
6 pointsManual's are a must in my book for ground engagement tools like tillers, mold board plows & cultivators. If you are mowing, snow blowing, and push blade plowing I would suggest a hydro. For one thing hydraulic lift is more common on a hydro and if you are going to be working for long periods of time you will be grateful that you weren't pulling on a handle all day long. Trust me your arm & shoulder will thank you at the end of the day. Second the hydro will be quicker at switching directions, this may not seem real important until you are trying to get a job done so that you can move on to the next one.

5 pointsSnow flakes outside high temp tomorrow of 31 16 for the low. it was time. 11 gas wells on the property next to me my county is one of the top natural gas producers in the country and i burn coal....
-
5 pointsDid a little TLC on the cart I picked up last week. It's going to be a nice attachment for my tractors.

5 pointsThink of how a high performance engine is brokenin on a dyno. Dead slumber to a full scream and held there. If it stays together, it's now test proven. Nothing sounds cooler.

5 pointsI would pick up a new cap. Yes, it's vented, but it shouldn't be leaking. Your old cap is likely missing the extra layer inside to prevent that.
-
5 points9 months to go before I can retire, I'll probably start collecting, but whether I actually stop working is another thing all together. I run a crew and we do framing on custom homes, mostly. I happen to get a lot of enjoyment and satisfaction from that kind of work, so we'll see
-
5 pointsThe Eaton 1100 transmission support a hydro lift installed The Eaton 700 hydro transmission do not support a hydro lift The Sundstrand hydro transmissions support a hydro lift
-
5 pointsI also like the looks of the blackhoods and own a 1984 C-165 8 speed that has the metal seat pan and is the last one of my WH tractors that needs some work, I am not a fan of the shaker plate and would consider the solid mounts that are now available, as for the transmission type it's personal preference, but I can tell you the manual lift for a plow and or snowblower get's real old during a significant storm, you will tire from it. The C-160 is a real nice model and was top of the line in it's day.
-
4 pointsThere’s a few around here... It’s my only C series hydro, but I don’t imagine it’s too different than the 60’s models we’ve accumulated. I’m focused mainly on organizing in the barn for now to make room to stuff a few vehicles inside for the winter. The racking is making a huge difference!
-
4 pointsWe've already had 6 in of snow here and single digits for tonite. Global warming? Unreal for this time of year but not a dang thing can do about it so just get ready for more to come is all a guy can do. Tried blowing snow last nite but the single plugged up twice... was more like pumping slush so just shut her down. Looks like the rest of our nation is not faring any better. Just for grins Jeff @WVHillbilly520H gonna grow one like that and trim accordingly just to get a rise out of the missus... I like it!
-
4 pointsit is already 72 downstairs normally will run 75 -79 ...no need for flannel shirts and undershirts. T shirts and thin pajama bottoms are the winter uniform.
-
4 pointsIf Howard can’t talk his way outta this, we know it’s a real problem!

4 pointsAT TIMES,,,THERE IS WHAT WE KNOW,,,,,,,,,AND OTHER TIMES,,,,,,,,ITS WHAT WE THINK WE KNOW............. OUR GROUP HANGS IN THE BALANCE,,,,, AS YOU WERE GENTS
-
4 pointsHoward...the 1st snow is God's fault...he knows that, and he or she will take it away. Do not blade it, as it will freeze like that and may not go away. The 2nd snow is your fault...pick the nicest day and get ready. Rock & Rye and a lawn chair.

4 pointsJim, it's a little late for that, when I got this one it was in good shape the original owner keep it up. I decided not to obsess over this one, yea right, just clean it up and replace some of the worn parts and use it like a rented mule. Once I started removing the sheet metal some of it had some rust, seat pan, foot board. seat mount, belt guard, nothing bad just surface stuff. I decided hit those spot with a scotch pad and then a shot of RR paint, well that didn't look to good so I painted the whole piece. My wife reminded me I was starting to obsess again, the hood looked good so I left it alone now it's going to look like a cheap paint job on some of it, but like my wife says that how a rented mule should look .
-
4 pointsI picked up a C-160 auto this summer, you guys are making me want to pull it out and give ‘Er a whirl!
-
4 pointsIf you come across one with the rubber shaker engine mounts for a good price, don't immediately reject it. There are aftermarket steel mounts available. One you replace the rubber mounts with steel the tractor should be just as solid as the others.
-
3 pointsPicked up a clean 1995 Single Stage, auger has the usual bends, scraper needs to be reversed but did not wear down to the frame. They couldn’t find the flag, so visited @wheelhorseman’s site https://wheelhorsepartsandmore.com to get a new one sent out. Turns really freely, and looks amazing. More pictures when cleaned up and lighter outside. I think this will go on the 310.

3 pointsI think we have gotten a bit off the mark here, so lets get back on track. 12 Horse needs to go buy himself a C-160 and all the attachments that he can find.
-
3 pointsJust use whatever oil you intend to use in the future & change & 10 hrs or so. Lets ask Mike @prondzy how he breaks in his builds. He's done more rebuilds in one week than I have done in my life.

2 pointsGood Lord that’s a lot of wires! I still maintain the Run, Don’t Walk attitude... If you can poke and prod the deck for rusted through spots, or run it while listening for quiet or noisy spindles, that should be enough inspection... however if the deck was total junk, it would still be a good deal. All still coming from a guy who’d much rather stick with the 50’s-70’s models.
-
2 pointsI really can't add anything to what Squonk and Herder said!! My C160 Auto is my favorite by far. The Cxx0 tractors are much easier to work on and maintain. And I'm no fan of the shaker mount either.
-
2 pointsThe Toro dealer was going to scrap them, I think, (the shipping label on both very dusty boxes showed they were received in 2009) and he said "Make me an offer". I bought the pair from him yesterday for $40...he probably would have taken $20 but I have some degree of fairness!
-
2 pointsHorse power is a secondary consideration for plowing snow, traction is the key factor. My ten HP 1055 manual shift will push snow just as well as my eighteen HP hydro 418-C. The primary difference is that the hydraulic lift on the 418-C allows me to function the remainder of the day once the snow plowing is finished. It consumes more gas, but it saves my arms and shoulders. I mow with a ten HP 310-8 the majority of the time for the same reason, it uses half as much gas as the 418-C and my yard is large enough (1.5 acres) that I don't change direction too frequently.
