Got my first retired military paycheck today!!! After months of waiting and stacks of forms and endless phone calls! I guess it does pay to turn 60! Now I just gotta live to hit 61 Nothing like a good ole check from the U.S. Treasury. I did drop it on the floor to see if would bounce @Achto says its like winning the lotto... I dunno Dan it wasn't that big of a check but enough for a couple more horses! Now to apply for cheap heath insurance and other benefits. Any tips from other retirees?

About a month ago, I was using my Raider 10 for yard work. It required lots of shutting the engine off and restarting. Toward the end of the day, the tractor would barely start, and I had to jump it to put it away. I found the original regulator (dated 1971) had gone belly up. I replaced the regulator, and all is fine. I decided to add a volt gauge so I could monitor the charging system. Ebay to the rescue! $7.64 later, I have a voltage gauge... I didn’t realize how nasty the steering wheel was... Danny

Congrats Jim! Thanks for your service. After retiring from crawling around in peoples basements, you better get a part time job doing some thing Jim. I'm sure Cindy don't want you hanging around the house playing with tractors & finding things to break all the time. Maybe you could get a job mowing the greens at Lawsonia with a reel mower on a RJ. 36 holes to mow every day, JUST THINK OF THE SEAT TIME!!

Ok so here is what I did... 1. Checked to ensure the rear was connected tight to the frame and two of the bolts were just slightly loose so they got tightened. Still not fixed 2. Pulled fender pan and really cleaned EVERYTHING good. Found the set screw on top rear corner of the tranny that holds the detent spring in place. That was loose. I puled spring, inspected it and stretched it slightly and then reinstalled. 3. Oil fluid was overfull so I changed oil and filter (takes 5 quarts with the new filter. I have not driven it for an extended period of time however so far no popping out of gear going down a few hills when tested. Hopefully that is the trick. I feel the issue was the detent screw was not tighten enough. Thank you for everyones help. I hope to test it out more this weekend.

I did that. Then I worked another 14 years and woke up one morning tired and said maybe I will go back to being retired. I did, Marv

I heated it with the torch and bent it slowly. A bit of used oil sludge helped to heat treat/quench it.

Say Richie, is that a pic of the two of us from a couple of years ago?😂 I did the tire inflation markings with decals on my VW. Really adds to the military look!

I keep thinking about ways to incorporate things from the Thing - pun intended! Maybe a shovel mount, grille guard, antenna, emergency light?

@Super-C 4 me, you can’t throw something out there that sounds that awesome and then say “Shhhh!” What’s the deal? I would love to see a build thread on that...

One cool detail on many vintage military vehicles is the tire inflation pressure printed above each tire and lifting eyes with "lift here" etc.

Exactly the type of thing I was thinking of. Since it’s Emory’s idea, I might let him get to help design it. He was really excited about the VW, so we’ll go with his idea. Will have to wait until after Christmas though, as I promised him I would paint his “Scrub Cadet” for Christmas this year. I’ll start a thread when we get started.

I retired 10 years ago and I have enjoyed ever minute of it. I do a lot of fishing and playing with my grand kids. I have taken up making jig heads and fishing weights. I sell them on craigslist. I make enough money this year to buy my wife a new car and paid cash for it. It takes a while to get started but it keeps me busy and keeps me from being a couch potato. Find something to do with your new time off. This will also help you stay in better health than just sitting around in the house. Have yourself a great retirement for the rest of you days. I am 71 and still having a great time with the rest of my days. By the way I get all my health benefits from the VA also. I have problems with Argent Orange but I do not let it stop me from keeping busy. Best of luck.

Gee Jim, by the title you had me fooled for a minute, I thought maybe you hit the lottery big on a scratch ticket and were running around your back yard in the dark yelling WOO HOO in your birthday suit. All kidding aside, thanks for your service and don't spend it all in one place.

Thanks Jimbo been on the VA like a dirty diaper too! This whole thing has been like navigating a minefield with blinders on put finally figuring out persistants pays.

yeah, I retired from retiring and will work 'til I'm dead.

Thanks Sylvan, I have renovated a lot of machine tools in my time but never a vehicle like this. Similar methods but this seems more of a living thing as I will get to drive it when it's done. Mick

The fuel cap was broken and rusty. No gauge parts left at all, just the cap and dial. So I machined up the face and made an aluminium disc to bond over the top. I made a little ide entry breather unit out of brass to allow air to enter the tank but not water. Quite happy with the result.

I’d love to see more of that one! I can’t tell if the frame was moved up on the transmission, or if something else in the rear is going on?

I had a problem with a tender boiling a good battery dry a few years back. I now put the tender on a timer where it will only be on one hour a day, works for me.

Was getting the Wheel Horse C160 out to clean and remove the tiller. One-year-old Duralast gold battery from AutoZone was toast. It was kept on a tender all last winter, GT was used earlier this year to till the garden. Battery would not take a charge. Looked up the warranty on the battery.... 3 MONTHS!!!!! I guess they know they sell a piece o’crap. Never again!!! Grabbed the fairly new one out of the Cub Cadet 123 (that needs a new right front axle) and it fired right up. I cleaned up the tiller and got it stored away, got the front blade out and more accessible, but ran out of light before I could get it mounted on the C160, in anticipation for snow this winter. Meanwhile, also removed the bagger from the Craftsman PGT9000 and put it away. I am hoping to get the Speedex 1631 out soon and plough the garden..... hopefully that will help with the weeds next year. Off to local Battery Outfitters shop for a new battery tomorrow..... hopefully will have better than a stinkin’ 3-month warranty on their GT batteries.

If you don't like the look of covering the edges, you could hand file them fairly quickly to half round. Once they rust a little it will blend right in.

To think I could’a borrowed one from ya! a bit of grinding, we’re in business! this hose isn’t even a good spare, it’s good as junk.

Primer bulb is a good idea, Mick. Both the C-125 and the Black Horse have them. Saves a lot of cranking if they've been standing for a while.

Are you talking about the hole that the shaft comes through? You could drill the hole out bigger then bush it back down to the shaft size. If it is the hole that the seal drives into, you could look for a slightly bigger o.d. seal then machine the hole for the seal to size.

My 1977 C-120 was very jerky when releasing the clutch pedal also,I replaced both the clutch return spring and installed a factory WH belt and the problem was solved. The condition of the belt did not look that bad but the clutch spring had about the same tension as a ball point pen spring.

There was never a Wheatland row crop or high crop. Wheatland's were short stout tractors that were built for tillage only. They usually didn't have adjustable front ends or even a PTO. Row crops were built to be more of an all purpose tractor. High crops were built to for cultivating, spraying and weed burning. Weed burning was not real common but yes farmers would basically hang torches from the tractor and drive down the rows burning the weeds off in between the crop plants. This was back when LP was super cheap. With those buggy rims that you have, "I smell yet another custom project"

The only adjustment is the rod from the pedal back on the left side. The length can be changed to suit the operator's height/comfort. The return spring also on the left side may be getting weak. If that happens the pedal is slow to follow the operator's foot back on engagement. The pivot points for the cross shaft may be worn adding increased resistance to pedal action. Lube on both sides may help. Garry

Wheel Horse projects are always fresh on my mind... it’s just accomplishing other things in life too that I struggle with!
