I came across all of this all by buying the wheel weights from a guy, who was selling them for someone. After chatting for a bit he discovered my intrest and knowledge of tractors. Well that led to me volunteering to go check a couple tractors out for a gentlemen. He was looking for a hand in getting them running so he can start using and enjoying them. Well after meeting the guy and talking for awhile he told me he's got some more wheelhouse stuff and I'm welcome to take it. I did not feel right doing that so before even seeing it I offered to purchase anything i could use. All I knew was it was wheel horse stuff that he said has been sitting in the barn for years. So I ended up buying all he had and I will be goin back next week to check out another goodie that's at another location. I'll make a post about that if I get it, meen time you will have to wait in anticipation.

Picked this up today. It was advertised as a 633, but I knew going in that some things weren't correct or had been changed along the way. The price was right for me, so what might it be? Or used to be? Thanks folks.

A few other various pics from the trip and the hike. They're a little difficult to see but note the row of windmills. This is a portion of the dirt road that you travel off of route 201 to get to the p o w camp. 12 miles in the forest.

The hood is now red. In a few weeks I will wet sand and spray another coat.

Just my woods tractor. I use it for about everything. Pulling small stumps, checking game camera, anything requiring the trailer. It has a receiver hitch from @smoreau and goes anywhere. It's next to the woods GMC Jimmy. I use that for more strenuous stuff. The tranny in it quit shifting above second gear, so it became a farm vehicle with AC. 😉

Well as it turns out we ended up spending five nights in the World War II German p o w camp. It was so interesting that we didn't bother to pick up and move to another location. Here's a picture of the monument at the location. It sits in front of a very large oven that is the only structure left on the site. All of the other buildings and structures were bulldozed in 1946 and 1947. We did do a hike of a medium sized mountain one of the days. The rest of the time we spent poking around the site with or without a metal detector and... Wait for it... Relaxing. I may have to do this in a couple of different posts because Trina took about 6472 pictures and shared a few with me so I can put them here for you folks. @posifour11 I'm calling you into this so you can share all of these photos with your wonderful other half. We'll start with a few photos of some very very old logging gear. The main job of the pows was logging. We found 3 axle setups buried in the woods. One had metal wire wheels. Another one had wooden spoke wheels. Both of those were the front steer axle of old cars, adapted to logging. The third one we found had a wagon axle. Here is a BEFORE picture which is how I found it in the woods. Two other pictures are AFTER I excavated the 75 years of leaves and dirt off the top of it. We buried it when done, so the next person can find it like I did. These next few pictures are of pins and handles that were rotting away in the forest in piles of junk metal and other stuff. In the bottom photo of this part you can see a hook from a cant hook or Peavey. All of the items in these photos are blacksmith made. Nothing is machine-made. Here are some pictures from the camp area. One of numerous barrel dumps. this is a floor beam sitting rotting away in the forest. The conical shaped item is one of many chimney flashing pieces that are still laying all over the camp. Each of the barrack buildings had several of them. The other piece is of course, stove pipe. Believe it or not this panel is one of the largest pieces of a building that is left. Most of it was quite crushed when the camp was bulldozed. This is an ice box. Predecessor to the item we refer to as a refrigerator. One of several dozen barrels on site. They held various items in their day. Gasoline. Grease. Motor oil. And creosote for coating buildings and poles.

The engine is a K181 8hp, that would make it an 833 . Also about a month ago you were out buying a wedding ring, I count at least three tractors bought after that. I'm just saying tread lightly my friend .

Picked up this pile of stuff today! Not sure what I will do with it all yet. But I know the weights and the belts will be put to use for sure. THE 603 steering wheel is mint and there's got to be close to 50 to 60 belts in the box. Unfortunately the weights were painted yellow, but I'll fix that.

Some bearings today have one seal on the outside. These are greaseable through the fitting in the wheel hub. Others have two seals - one inside and one outside. The inner seal will not allow grease into the bearing and if grease is applied the pressure will force the bearing out of the hub and off the spindle. Best to remove the grease fitting and plug the hole with a set screw so grease can not be applied because once the bearing is installed you won't remember if they are greasable or not. Both types look alike on the outside. Close examination will reveal the seals. Garry

I have seen the same with one of a pair of C81's I bought a few years ago. When the rod broke it took out the bottom of the bore, along with the skirt on the piston. Time for another block. It is not worth the gamble that the block is now cracked and would fail after being rebuilt. A rod usually breaks due to a low oil level and the rod binds up on the crank journal before it snaps. The cost of a new rod, turning the crank journal (or a new crank) along with a gasket set gets pricey - better to find a donor block. Bill

Well after reading all of this, I'm just gonna say I think this has steered way off course and is seeming like a who knows what about what ordeal. But to the original topic, I would say I don't think wheelhorse would be around today regardless. Because the fact of times have changed way to much and with that being said. Wheel horse and many other brands from back 20 to 30 years ago were not building a good enough to get by riding mower. They were building small multi purpose garden tractors, with simplicity and dependability in mind. To appeal to total different generations than the present one. Machines of the past were built to allow people to have a better convenience to there home care and gardening and so on. They built there machines with pride and no belief of temporary or wasteful thoughts. That's just my opinion.

Here are a few pictures from the hike we did. The mountains in the area are literally, numbered. We went up Number Five Mountain. At the top there is a very old fire tower. Part of the ascent trail is the old Jeep trail that would have been used by the fire wardens.

Today Trina and I (and of course the dog) spent some time in the forest preparing a little firewood. This little guy was watching the festivities.

I agree. I took it off to replace the belt and just never put it back on. No grinding, though. Still need to do it for the sake of my shoes. 😁

Don't know how I missed it, but my "ATV" tractor had water in the transmission. I usually check them out as soon as I get them. I guess I missed it and just put it to work. Drained, Thursday, flushed twice yesterday and filled with good stuff today. Installed a new shifter boot. Now, it goes back to work. 😀

Weather forecast is partially right. So i used the Rainfree hours to do Today some minor Work. Not only at The Beast. Firstly i begin with the draining Fuel and change the Fuel lines, because marten has biten and it drips if engine runs, it just sweat a bit if Tractor was off. After i did a closer inspection, i see a Gauge like „Old School“ . Boy, i love that and decide i will reactivate. Get a piece of clear Tube to exchange with the Black one. that was the Result.. after refilled it shows me the Fuel, what is in Tank. Pretty Cool. Than, while i drove yesterday in later noon, i missed a bit light on the Road, the car light is pretty weak. I thinkering someday‘s the light will be very Weak, so i ordered 2 Front lights ahead. The shine they shall bring to the road was nor really sharp. They where surely bright but not where i need them. in the Morning when they Wet, they look not too bad, but after mounting the new ones a significant difference was happen. They arrives yesterday and today i quickly changed them. What a difference. The right one is the 25 year old, the left one is a new one allready inserted. Because of the blind glass, the light will be diffus spreaded and thats the reason it felt to Weak. Then by th Test i found out, one of the Servos, the changed the bright wide hungs. Because im on the Way, i still reworked it and remount. Another urgently Issue Solved.let‘s have a Coffee 😎

@Franky Figs to . I have made several plow angle levers, including the little pivoting release lever! I use 1 1/4" X 1/4" flat steel and what ever length needed. I have made straight ones, and ones with a "custom" bend in them.

Looking good. Nice little driver to make the rounds at tractor shows. Previous owner put some custom touches on it but o harm done.

I'm giving Richard's suggest a try. With just a tube inside the tire, that wasn't enough to get it to the shape it needed to be. So I added some plastic pails to the center of the tubes and helped quite a bit, now, time will tell.

Glad to see you plan to celebrate the patina! I have used 400 wet/dry sand paper, 0000 steel wool and WD-40 and the remaining old paint under the rust will show through quite well.

don,t stay locked into the 8 hp mind set, that c 85 is the basis for the tractors of the era. you can easily find a 10 /12 hp engine and it will be a good upgrade , with matching bolt in locations. i hunted around for mine , with the same c 85 chassis, picked up a 12 hp magnum on ebay . aside from the electrical change over , new switch and plug in wire harness , the change has been so worth it. you will have a great black hood series tractor with updated power , whats not to like , pete

I've cut some scraps of 2 x 4 lumber a little longer than the width of your rims.Stick them between the beads of the tires to spread them apart.Leave them overnight.Mount on the rims in the morning.I've done this on car and truck tires too when I couldn't catch the beads when trying to air up new tires.Works for me.
  41. 2 points
I think what Richard is saying is put the tubes in the tires before putting the tires on the rims. And leave them out in the sun.
  42. 2 points
Great idea...just curious - if you already have a tube and go to the trouble of inflating etc. why not just go with tubes installed and call it good? Thats what I did and it has worked great...
  43. 2 points
Okay got it home. can not believe the tires are holding air. Secobd picture is on the fork lift.

I have put tubes in tires and inflated them, then put them in the sun.
