8 points1951 Case VAC She just finished mowing about 5 acres of the 6-8 she takes care of weekly or as needed. Never skipped beat. None of my tractors WH or otherwise are show queens they all have work to do. The tall grass in the background is part of the 18 acres that will be cut soon with either a 75 yr old Farmall M and her 55 year old Bush Hog Mdl 600 or a 1953 Case DC 3 and her sickle bar. Wonder how many Kioti's Montana's etc compact tractors will still be working in 70 years.

4 pointsIgnition timing on Kohler engines. Gapping the ignition points at .020 has always been the standard answer for how points should be set. That probably will get you into the ballpark where the engine will run, but with a bit of additional effort you can improve the engine’s power and performance. The Kohler engine manual (page 9, Section 6) in the Red Square files section covers two methods for setting the ignition timing, Static Timing and using a Timing Light. This manual is a relatively new manual and it glosses over the fact that many of our engines were built prior to the ACR (automatic compression release) camshaft. Earlier engines (mostly 1965 and earlier) had a Spark Advance camshaft that can not be timed using Static timing. At rest (and very low RPMs) the timing is retarded to fire slightly after TDC. The timing mark (S or SP) on your flywheel is at twenty degrees before top dead center but at rest the points on these engines break about ten degrees after top dead center. The manual tells you to Static Time to the "T" mark on the flywheel but the only reliable way to check or set the timing on these engines is with a timing light. There are a couple ways to determine what camshaft you have. Presuming the camshaft in your engine is the one it was born with the data plate on the engine has a suffix that can tell you what camshaft was used. The table below will tell you the suffix applicable to your engine. The other way to determine what camshaft you have is to remove the cam gear cover and take a look. If you see a mechanism attached to the cam side of the gear it is the ACR cam. The following engines have the spark advance camshaft; K-141, Suffix prior to “C” K-161, Suffix prior to “J” K-181, Suffix prior to “D” K-241, Suffix prior to “D

4 pointsUsed my brother's 314-H (yes I know the hood says 314-8) to cover the septic tank back up after a clean out. It worked well with a 42 inch sbowplow/dozer blade. We used the Honda 6522 with the Woods-DuAll backhoe to remove the soil over the septic tank. Video of me covering the septic tank back up with dirt. 043.MOV 043.MOV

4 pointsI am pretty sure it is coming from the seam. The metal is worn flat as compared to rest of seem. Its not the hitch pin its self, it's the flat part of hitch that goes under transmission. What a great bunch of people on here to answer so so quickly. Did not expect that. (WOW) I will check further
-
4 pointsWhile the hitch pin hole may be worn, the "seam" between the 2 transmission halves is a somewhat thick piece of metal. There is a gasket between these two halves that "seals" them together. To replace that gasket the transmission has to be split in half. However, have you cleaned the transmission top to bottom, then ran the tractor a while, stopping frequently to double check where the leak is coming from. The hitch pin area is a low point and you want to make sure oil isn't seeping from another area, flowing down the split joint and then dripping off the bottom of the hitch pin like its leaking there.

3 pointsIt seems to me that people are mad when they buy a Troy bilt, or mtd and it breaks a year later! With everything made in China today, and John deere being at the top of the market. It seems to me that the 70’s and 80’s were the “tougher than nails” years for wheel horse. What do you think?
-
3 pointsas tractor collectors restorers etc.. we tend to accumulate extra parts. I have a stacks of front rims with no idea if they are correct for certain models?? front rims on project tractors as we know maybe miss matched or wrong. I thought this might be a good chance or we could come up with a guide to put together some sort of reference with model/year. maybe this way we could be able to pass off or trade front rims to whoever needs them. ideas thoughts??

3 pointsThat’s my biggest complaint about FB Howard... its hard to find something you saw a day or two back. Stuff just disappears So it was in the “wheel horse show and sell group”. The guy making them is Eston Hoffman, not sure if he is a member here.
-
3 pointsThis has been discussed a number of times, I believe that the consensus is that in this throw away world, people no longer give a rats petoot.
-
3 pointsThey make these little cutting disk for a 4 1/2" side grinder they do a great job on removing metal that's in the wrong place. You have to make changes If you want this to work. That storage box is too deep you could never get stuff out from the bottom anyway cut it down and move it up and put the cooler behind it. I believe we will have to get Trina on here to get this trailer fixed.

2 pointsOnce again Trina and I are headed up to the great North Maine Woods with our amazing friend. No reservation. No set plans. Don't even know for sure what day we're coming back. The first place we are going to head is one of the German p o w camps that was located in Maine during World war II. All three of us are the type of people that could spend hours at a salvage yard just looking around. Our friend has a decent quality metal detector and volumes of knowledge of World war 2 and later military. It's going to be a fascinating area. After that? Maybe move camp and do a little hiking.

2 pointsKubota still make a good strong garden tractor and they are mostly built in the United States. There are other companies that build good stuff too, very expensive. JD way overrated in my opinion. Good thing still lots of old wheel horse tractors out there for small money competitively.
-
2 pointsThe last units produced were the 315-8 speeds and with a 42” deck they were well over $4000.... closer to $5000 I think. Pretty tough sell for a non-hydro, manual lift, non-bagger equipped machine. I can’t help but wonder what it actually cost the factory to plop one of these classic machines in a dealership showroom. If you think about it the tranny, frame and sheet metal were all pretty much unchanged from the introduction of the 300/400 series machines of the mid to late 80’s. TORO couldn’t have been spending much on research and development since it was all old previously designed parts.
-
2 pointsI don’t recall the price. One of our members bought the first or second one made (and promptly put it up for sale ). I would think with the manufacturing process figured out, going by the number of units in the above pictures, that the selling price might come down a bit. Regardless of the price I have no interest in owning one.
-
2 pointsI thought we had a post here on ... back when these surfaced the first time. Wasn't the pricing on these toys somewhere around the price of two full sized RJ's?

2 pointsNew on here I have Charger 12 with hydrostatic transmission. Numbers are not readily available as of this post. Problem is hitch on back has worn the seam of the transmission to the point of leaking. What can be done? Thanks in advance.

2 pointsI decided today was the day. I pulled on the start rope for a couple minutes - nothing. Got compression? - check Fuel tank petcock open? - check. Got fuel in the carb? - check Kill switch open/run? - check Got spark? - nope Disconnected the kill switch. Bingo! She fired right up. Some darkish/greyish smoke for a few minutes, then it cleared up. Idles a little fast. Advanced the throttle and it chokes down - probably a clogged air filter. I let it idle while holding some steel wool on the drive pulley to clean it up and make it shiny. Then very carefully put the drive belt in place, and the transmission began spinning in neutral and seemed to run peaceably with no ominous sounds. I let it run for about 10 minutes, then my excitement got the better of me. I hopped on, pushed the clutch pedal down, eased it into 1st gear, and let the pedal out slowly. It took off and I drove it around the yard for a few minutes. Since the steering link was broken, I had to kick the front wheels with my feet to turn right or left. It will pop a wheelie when starting in 3rd gear. It still needs a lot of tweaking, but it's a start. It's ALIVE, Igor! IT'S ALIVE!

2 pointsHitch probably didn't cause the oil leakage. Most likely gasket failure. If that is the answer, well it will involve splitting the case. Not what you want to hear but without photos hard to say otherwise.

2 pointsSince the 500 special is at a stand still I jumped onto the 603....notice that someone bent twisted pried and eventually wrecked the sections of frame tower where the manual lift lever mounts I bought a 704 frame for $10 at the big show this year with the intentions of doing what I did ...cutting it to make my 603 beautiful again.....my welder got a good use tonight ...I still have to grind the welds
-
2 pointsNo kidding the owners manual suggests you kick the seat back and stand up for a turn or two... which I do it is a nice stretch...
-
2 pointsPainted the wheel weights that will be going on the 877 this year for plow duties. The wheels will be cleaned up and painted over the weekend. Once I get it all together, I'll make up my mind whether I like them this color or not.

2 pointsUpdate on Scottie Tuesday was the big day for us....Scott had his reconstructive surgery and now we are in the hospital for a few days. Bryan, Scott and I arrived at St. Mary's at 8:30 Tuesday morning to get ready for the surgery. His surgical procedure was called a urethralplasty, which is the re-connection of his bladder to the urethra. This is normally a ten hour surgery, however, Scottie's only lasted six hours. When the surgeon came out and spoke with Lowell and I, he gave us really good news. During the procedure they were able to re-attach the sphincter muscles for the valve that opens and closes the pee stream. With that being said there is only about one percent of less that his sphincter will work normally and he will be able to pee normally without leaking. So we are still on the docket to have the valve surgery in December. What about his erectile function? Well we found out that all of that is intact and he should not have any problems with that later in life. As for the bowel movements and if he will have any control of that, we found out that none of the nerves were damaged during the accident and all Scott and I have to do is retrain his brain and teach him all over. Keep in mind that this is okay for him to do. Scottie came out of the surgery with two catheters, one supra-pubic and one urethral, he has five incisions on his abdominal area above the belly button (this is where the robot was inserted and the procedure was performed), and lastly he has a jackson pratt pump that helps drain the fluid in that cavity. The surgeons have him on his two different bladder medications, his anxiety medications, and pain medications. So how has Scottie been since his surgery? Tuesday night was rough because he got sick from all of the anaesthesia that he consumed in the operating room, he received high pain medications in the operating room so he was not hurting as much. He did have some discomfort from having the new catheter in place in his urethra. We had very little sleep. Yesterday, Scottie got up and walked twice and sat in the chair twice. He started eating normal foods and had no issues with being nauseated. We were doing really well on his pain control until about 11 pm when all of the medication from the operating room wore off. Scottie's pain started to get uncontrolled. He was given his medications for his bladder spasms, he received his tylenol and motrin for the pain (which did not help), had his valium (no prevail), and he got a B&O suppository which the nursing staff did not want to give because it slows his heart rate down and they do not like that. He got zofran because he had some nausea and the only medication that he really needed but never got was his oxy for his break through pain. Last night I felt like I was fighting a loosing war with the nursing staff. I understand that things happen and that Scottie is not their only patient but when he is in pain, well, help him get comfortable. Scottie finally got comfortable around 3:30 this morning and he fell asleep between 4:30-5:00 am. We have talked to the doctors and we are looking at going home tomorrow (Scottie's Birthday) or on Saturday. The only criteria that we have to meet includes the following,,,having his pain under control both during the day and especially at night, he poops, he is able to eat without feeling nauseated during the night and he walks. So far we have not met the criteria. I do know that Scottie is looking forward to going to the Le Seuer County Pioneer Power Tractor Show and being around his tractor family and friends. We do appreciate all of your prayers and thoughts. We do love each and everyone of you and you will always have a special place in our family. Please continue to pray for Scottie and our family. as we continue down this long road. I will keep you all posted with anything new that arises on Scottie.

1 pointI've sandblasted the PTO bell and installed NEW bearings and Bearing Seal. Painted it up real nice, and even have a NEW bearing Race (1-1/8") for it. MY QUESTION.... Answer found.... This STUB SHAFT is for a B-165 or B-115 PTO.... it makes a precise fit, but is WRONG for this PTO bell. Sorry for any confusion.... Moderator's discretion to delete all of this...
