8 pointsHow about had? The 657 was under porch for 25 years. The no name was a cheap pick up for plowing. The 1257 was a special pick up in NY. This was from the original owner always keep this up. Real clean not messed with. Miss it. Really like those start/gens. I had the seat redone with the pans done from a tin knocker .

8 pointsPosted June 13, 2013 (edited) Here are photos of my 653. It is 100% original. All decals are present and intact even on engine. Even the carburetor looks like it has never been touched. The plow has never been mounted with the hardware still in the sealed bag. Tires still have a lot of the "knibs" on them. It has only cut grass twice in its life. Cas (additional info edited in) Bought it in 2007 on eBay. It came from Columbus,Ohio. My fiercest competitor for it was Wild Bill. It was his questions to the seller and the fact that he stated who he was that really sparked my final interest in the tractor. Needless to say it did not come cheap. I seem to be the third owner. It was originally owned by an elderly gentleman in a farming comunity and it was only used by him for transportation. Its second owner had it only for a little while and used it only twice to mow an elementary school yard. I don't believe this tractor has ever stayed outside one day in its life or ever felt a drop of rain. With the exception of a bill of sale every other piece of paper that came with it in 1963 I have, down to the engine tag warning to put oil in before using. Everything feels tight like new specially the steering. It was certainly loved by its previous owners as testified by its condition. It has never been touched by paint or a wrench. It only had one diode changed at some time in the past . I can also state that it will stay that way for at least two more generations, since it will not go anywhere during that time.

7 pointsWith the exception of the seat and mid grader. I bought this 73 no-name 12 from the original owner. Still had the original spark plug in it when I picked it up. (He kept it)

You can see the holes in the hood for the insect sprayer mounting and the on the exhaust pipe is the hook up for it. Hey HHHOOOWWWAAARRRDDD!!! . The # 8 is on the hood. Is that the number you were telling me about at the show?

4 pointsFirst things first. There's no such thing as a dumb question except for the one that you did not ask. There were some wheel horses built in the late 60s and early 70s that had a limited slip. Otherwise, all of them are one wheel drive, so to speak. Traction can be increased by changing tire type, traction can be increase by changing tire type, adding chains, or adding fluid or steel weights .
-
4 pointsI've been sorta looking for another set of wheel weights and actually wanted the type that protrudes outside of the wheel. The reason being is that I'll also run them in the summer on my main mowing tractor, the 2005 Classic. I really push the limits mowing sideways on the hills and it will give me a little more margin for error. Mowing up the hills that are just too steep hasn't been a problem but the extra weight sure won't hurt. I found a set of 75 pounders down in Bremen and picked them up yesterday. Pictured next to a set I got from Scott a few years ago and you can see the size difference for the additional weight. I also like the fact that the carriage bolts and nuts won't be protruding outside the weight. I think I done good getting 150# of weights for 50 smackers. Gotta get the proper decals on them though.

4 pointsThe incredible thing is that they are 56 years old and not one single crack or sign of rubber deterioration.

4 pointsEric, I built my deck over strictly out of necessity needing to pull the RV and haul tractors at the same time. We considered looking at toy haulers but because we got such a good deal on our camper, we soon realized we’d be doubling our cost in the camping end of the spectrum to find a reasonable replacement... then thought of just driving two trucks. As as far as trailers go, I tend to overthink and overbuild and over pack. I followed (at a safe distance) a motorhole hauling a Suzuki Samauri on a single axle utility trailer last year heading up north on the interstate. I wouldn’t ever think to put that load on one utility axle, but it was probably rated to do so. I’d be more comfortable looking for a dual axle trailer for the redundancy of an extra footprint. Now we get to your situation. I would think you’re crafty enough to somewhat duplicate the deck-over idea and overbuild it to hold your horses (ha! Hold your horses, Mister!) and keep a bit of room for storage. You have plenty of tree limbs to help with loading and unloading of the deck, right? A simple pulley system would help to get it off the trailer for gravel use. It would also hold you over until you’re in the truck market to get a bigger trailer at the same time. I like the deal that @dells68 got on his trailer this spring/summer and would love to add something like that to my hauling fleet! I also have an 8x8 snowmobile trailer. Little did I know, someone hauled something quite heavy at one time and the axle was bent pretty bad. The tires looked great from the outside, but the inside tread was nearly gone. I jacked the axle up and welded in a support to give it a little upward now, to anticipate a load like the semi flat beds do. It hauls better and I trust it for a couple tractors now... but loading with the tilt mechanism is still a bit cumbersome. You’d have to load simultaneously or half load one, then drive the other up, block and strap it, then finish the other to use the tilt... or simply use ramps from the stationary position.

4 pointsBecause green paint is overrated!! Seriously though, I never had any inclination to start looking for older Horses until I showed up here trying to fix my beater. My folks got an older used model in the 90's and I have fond memories of it, but I don't even know what model it was. Now I find myself hunting CL, not just locally, but anywhere I have friends or family. Thanks guys. I'm not really in a spot to buy toys but the hunt is fun and I might come across a killer deal on a good mower.
-
4 pointsFor $500 you should be there picking it up already instead of typing! You can sort out the little stuff later on. If the engine runs fine with the added tank then the issue is the fuel getting to the carb. Could be as simple as a plugged up vent on the gas cap to needing a new fuel pump.
-
4 pointsI have 6 x 10 with a ramp gate. Using skinny tires I can put my 857 on sideways and my 953 & 1267 on side by side. If I had to do it over again the smallest I would want is 6 1/2 x 12. I would get the biggest trailer you can store, haul and afford. You never know what you might need in the future.

4 pointsMy 1057 and favorite . I’m the second owner . I’ve never heard a quieter deck than this one. My 856 . There’s a short back seat under the cushion somewhere. This is a photo off eBay and I scored it with the cart too just as a bonus . I was the only bidder. My 212-6 . Now at my cousins house on mowing duty . My cousins (1967 I believe) lawn Ranger. It was doing the mower duties but didn’t wanna blow up the Tecumseh !

-
3 pointsUnless you have a BIG dill motor and will be having a future need for the large drill bit I would suggest that you take the axle to a machine shop to have it done. Chances are it will cost about the same and they will do it right, it is too easy to have a bushing distort while being pressed in and then it will need to be reamed.

3 pointsI can't view it but pullstart is probably correct. You should check the valve tappet clearance. problem with K181s they are not adjustable. you have to grnid them down a bit if they are too tight or replace the valve if it is too loose (Probably your case as too loose makes them a bit clicky)...or do what I do ...live with the tapping

3 pointsMy little bear is growing up..... Today was my sons first day of school. He’s been waiting for this since he could put together sentences. Every time a school bus would go by he’d ask “Daddy, is that gunna be my bus?” He went off with no fear, only excitement.
-
3 pointsSometimes just the tone of a so often used word can change the outlook of the current event. “Honey” in my calm “Dad voice” usually brings out the ER triage nurse in Mrs. Pullstart. No, she hasn’t ever been paid as an ER triage nurse, just part of being a daughter in the racing family, wife to this guy and mom to my wonderful Monsters! Glad you’re on the mend @posifour11!

2 pointsJim, you of all people should know that a 657/857 are four speeds; a 1067/1267 would be a six speed; six speeds were not used in 6 and 8 HP in 1967

2 pointsThis was going to be a parts machine until I cleaned it up and got a closer look. All I've done to it is clean it up, install a new seat and paint the wheels.
-
2 pointsSince you said the tractor is new to you, does it have the correct clutch hoop? I swapped a KT 17 in a 310-8 to replace the worn out M10 and discovered that the clutch hoops are different. You cannot use a clutch hoop from a Kohler Single with a Kohler Twin. The hoop will get jammed against the bracket on the motor without activating the clutch. Just a thought. Post some pics of the fully assembled clutch mech. Someone here may spot something wrong.
-
2 pointsNew points come with a coating over the contacts to keep them from oxidizing. You didn't mention a new plug. And as many here have found out that sometimes a plug will spark when it's out of the head but will not fire under the compression when it's installed.
-
2 pointsTrina and I aren't married so I don't have to worry about the first half of that but try being in a partnership with a black belt. Don't need no rolling pin. Good thing she's so amazingly calm isn't it?
-
2 pointsI’m unsure of 100% originality but these ones at least haven’t been repainted...
-
2 pointsIf I'd done it myself, I'd have gotten a spot of blood on my beat to hell, 300k s10. That would clash with the mold decor that the previous owner (fishing guide) had started. She was calmer than I expected. I guess it's her experience with taking kids to the ER while I was deployed or driving herself to the hospital for baby stuff. 😁
