15 pointsLike most parents I am proud of my children and their accomplishments. My son graduated in the top 10 percent of his class with a chemical engineering degree from Va Tech. He went to work for Azdel Corporation as a production engineer. The parent company, Hanwha, is a multinational corporation with holdings servicing ,the petrochemical, financial and chemical sectors. Hanwha started an advertising campaign asking its employees to submit an essay about why they are proud to work for Hanwha. Hanwha proud was the theme. Out of the many submissions my son's was one of the five chosen. The prize was a poster of him and the other finalists to be displayed in New York's Times Square and a company paid trip to see it in person. This my son Andrew with his likeness on display. Shortly after he started to work for Azdel, he came home to visit. He spent a lot of time on the production floor then and interacted with the workers. He told me that he met an elderly woman who was a custodian and found she was walking miles home because she had no car. He started giving her a lift home. I told him that alone is one of my proudest moments as a parent.

13 pointsToday...it was more @Coulter Caleb on the horse than me but it was what we did... I had failed to plant a garden this spring and it is overcome with weeds and basically an eyesore. I made up my mind after spending the morning in the office pouring over bids, bills, and paperwork that I was ready to do some physical work. I got out the Big D and mowed the weed patch down and then began the tedious job of tearing up the soil. Normally I would plow it first but I had never leveled from last falls plowing and it was a bumpy mess. Caleb grabbed JackRabbit and his digger from Craig and got to work. Momma had the little boys working in the house and so Caleb slapped a couple of weights on the digger and broke up the ground. As you can see, it was a real mess to begin with but after about an hour and a half we had it broken up pretty well. I followed behind him with my Troy-Bilt Bronco Tiller and then he pulled the weights and drug out the rest of the trash before it began to level out nicely. That 418-C is a nice machine and the hydro was perfect for this task. Later this week, we will hook on the drag and continue to get it the way it should be. Another fine day of using the horses! Thanks Craig for the great attachment...looks and works good👍🏻

12 pointsGreetings all! my name is Earl and I am a new member from new york- I grew up operating a 1966 606 wheel horse mowing the lawn and plowing snow. I recently purchased a 1967 657 wheel horse tractor with a 36 inch rear discharge deck. It is basically the same machine from my childhood- The machine is in great condition having been garage kept and maintained all its life. It had been sitting for many years so it took some work to get it back to running condition but I finally had the satisfaction of cutting my grass with it just yesterday. A total trip down memory lane for sure! I am looking forward to interacting with other members here and seeing pics and hearing the tales from other proud wheelhouse owners like myself. Will attempt to post some pics !

11 pointsHello all, just a quick introduction. We have recently bought what I believe to be a 1968 Commando 8. [having bought a derelict house with large garden - another story] Anyway the little tractor is for work not show. Having done some research I think an 8 speed would've been better.............. hay-ho..................... Anyway here's model number 1-4832, serial 113921 The deck is very rough, I'm hoping to use it for the rest of the season then re-build over the winter. It's model number is 5-2362 serial 111828 On the topic of the deck how on earth do you replace the belts? Anyway thanks all, brilliant site, Ali

11 pointsPlayed with the 500 Special this morning. I mounted the fuel tank, fit the belt guard, connected the choke cable, installed a muffler, partially ran the wiring for the kill button and a couple other odds and ends. There's a few minor things I want to do but then I'm thinking this will go into storage for a while as I ponder my options on what to do. I lightly fogged the engine and I'm keeping the fuel system dry. My shoulder isn't going to get any better and yanking on a starter rope is pretty much second only to throwing a ball when it comes to irritating it.

10 pointsNew front tires, new seat, rebuilt hyd.pump & cylinder, new belts, wiring & fuel system repair, runs & drives great next will be WD40 & steel wool and it will be finished first show this weekend.

7 pointsThe majority gets done with the 05 Classic GT. I like to use the 76 B-160 for the paths. It won't surprise any of you but the fact that I'm running the 76 48" deck on the 05 Classic and the 42" from the 05 on the 76 has raised some eyebrows to the non Wheel Horse friends.

6 pointsThanks for sharing Jim . It’s good to read about something positive happening in this day and age. I was told once by one of my kids teachers that they were the perfect student and she went on to tell me why . Polite , helpful , respectful , pays attention and wants to learn. I told her you must have my kid mixed up with someone else because that’s definitely not how they act at home. She said no it’s your kid and your doing a good job raising them because of how they acted in class and out in public . You’re there to parent them not to be there friend and she was absolutely correct . Something I see way to much of in this generation . So with this said congratulations on your sons accomplishment and his good deeds he does without hesitation. Jim you and your wife deserve a much congratulations too for raising a good kid. Give yourself a pat on the back for successfully doing one of the hardest jobs out there. Being a good parent. And I’m with John @wallfish that Dick’s @953 nut post is spot on .

6 pointsGreat story Jim. Thank you for sharing. I believe most Kids turn out to be great adults. Some because of their parents and some in spite of their parents. Job well done.

5 pointsI have some questions and/or thoughts. I’ve been wanting to do this for quite some time... I picked up this DB for this purpose, then the hubs, wheels and tires were donated to Frank. I do realize that Putt Putt would loose the front hanging weight while the mower is hooked up. 1) The sickle mower is 34” wide, the rear track width of Putt Putt is 36”. I know we’re not looking for pristine, but would the tires being an inch or so wider than the cut path affect the next pass? 2) The DB pulley is a clutch mechanism. Would I be better off using it as a solid pulley (always engaged) and use a mower pto engagement setup? 3) I have a snow plow frame I could use, or build from scratch for a mid mount or even front mount. Thoughts? If I use build a front mount, I could lift it like a snow blower with a flag mount or whatever they are called. That could possibly become the belt engagement! I see the pictures in the gallery from @APPALACHIAN EDGE and @Tractorhead mentioned this the other day... so I figured it’s time to dig it out and start scratching my head. Thoughts? If these were your project, how would you tackle it?

5 pointsI picked up this old girl from @WHX24 at the portage show. Shes tired but has a great color. Thanks Jim! The weather has been unbearably hot and wet and life has been busy but tonight i did a little farrier work and put some new shoes on her i think shes shaping up nicely, Future plans will be a heart transplant, new saddle, along with a new hitch and cable, then i think she will be ready to make an appearance in WI at Jims Plow day. So @Coulter Caleb you better have that 854 ready to roll some dirt so we can show all those Big Block Kohlers what a small block can do! And thanks again Jim!

5 pointsI cut 5-6 acres between my place and a couple neighbors lots with my 416 H with 48" deck down in Mathews Co. on the Bay. The grass is almost always tall and thick as we are just above sea level down there so unless we have drought conditions the grass never seems to get dry and slow down, The 314 mainly does trailer duty now, and I took the C160 with 42" deck back home to cut my grass and my son's grass. That's still my favorite machine to mow with.
-
5 pointsI’m sure hand drills and a tap handle would have been just fine, but this mag drill was offered for the project. I can see one of these on the shelf some day!
-
5 pointsLong ways to go, but it’s found the general shape! I flipped an image to better picture the finished product compared to the scale model.

5 points@Earl Stevenson to ,!! That’s a nice 657, we’ve got it’s younger cousin in our herd, an 857 Here’s a few pics to say hi from my fam to yours!

5 pointsYou would have to fill it with lead or at least a bunch of old brake rotors. Yugo's came with a tool kit. Their only value came if you took the kit out and sold it at a yard sale.

5 pointsSold my husqvarna, gonna start using a little bit of this....and little bit of that....

5 pointsI was in Zagreb on a mission outreach last fall as a team leader. It is an affluent city and there were many very cool exotic cars. For those of you who keep up with geography, Zagreb is in the old country of Yugoslavia, home to that “whatever it is”! Well, with free enterprise and capitalism has come an influx of cars from around the world. Guess what was all but missing? Then one day I turned the corner and I said, “Dad quick, take a picture!” He said, “Of what?” That Yugo of course! Looks like he is lining up to race the vintage Citroen!!! Speaking of the Citroen, I started looking around for “Kurt Henderson”...

4 pointsPicked 9 1/2 cups this morning. Wild bushes but very prolific this year and tasty. I planted a few blueberry bushes a few years ago they are not ready yet.

4 pointsI was pondering that today Mike. I'm thinking that would put it horizontal and I'd like it at about 45° but I'm going to try tomorrow. From the seat with my left arm might be the ticket. I don't know Richie. I like telling the story about how this K-161 started out working for the mouse. It just seems kinda appropriate. I have guns. Back in 68 my Dad was looking to buy another new one. I saw a 500 Special on the showroom floor and, being a Indy 500 fan, I tried to get him to buy it. "Nope, no Tecumseh for me" was his reply. Smart man Soooooo…...I built this one touting that it is a 500 Special that my Dad would have bought.
-
4 pointsIf I had a kid I bet he'd be just like that.. Seriously Jim, you have every right to be proud and so does your son.... The Apple doesn't fall far from the tree...

4 pointsWelcome to redsquare Earl! You'll not only find a ton of information here but you'll make friends. Lots of them. My honey, Trina, has an 867 and a 657. We've done a full restoration on the 657. Welcome aboard.

4 pointsThe majority of the time I cut grass with my 315. It is a great machine, I just wish it would turn a little bit tighter.
-
4 pointsI built a couple braces to keep some stress off the first bends while I force the second ones into submission. It seems to be helping great!

4 pointsI recently pick up a set of old general 4.00-8 at a swap meet. Refinished the rims in a gloss almond. which in my mind is a modern shade of the old linen white. A little more beige than the linen. Anyway that was off topic. I had planned to put them on my c 160. I had a set of Goodyear ags in the barn that I had already painted. Just tinkering around today I decided to put them on my wife’s pediddle to surprise her. Needless to say I was surprised, I love the look. I like the Iook of the almond wheel much better than the silver. And the big ags and skinny fronts make it look like an actual tractor. Both the ags and the old turfs are 23-8.5-12 but the ags measured almost 2 inches taller overall. Only problem now is I have to find another set of skinny’s for the c 160

4 pointsGlad to see a couple of you using other brands ....I’m one of those guys as well. So probably 70% is done with my Craftsman with a 46” deck and a triple bagger setup and 30% is done with my WH C-105 with a 42SD. That’s my dad mowing my yard with the C-105 last year when I was laid up with a leg infection.

4 pointsBeen a little WARM lately so haven't been able/willing to do much but here she is. Just waiting on the decals from Terry (ordered them last night) and a couple of pieces for the choke and throttle levers. I saw a stack setup at the big show and thought to myself "I've got all the parts for that" so TaDa! (still not sure if the exhaust pipe is too long) The last thing will be to shove her out the door and fire her up BTW: I know the stack is crooked. It was still kinda tacky so I haven't straightened it up and put the clamp on it yet

4 pointsMy main mowers C-120/180 and 520-H both with 48" side discharge decks. The 312-8 was used today it moves right along with the 25" rear tires. I used Forest Gump for clearing small brush and around fields. Then the 1958 22" Eddleman for triming and ditches and banks. I have 4 1/2 acres and mow a little over 2 acres. We also have 28 acre farm next door with a acre or so. My brother is taking care of it now. I will get the leafs up around Thanksgiving.

3 pointsI have these growing wild outback of my house I'm able to get to them before the birds do!

3 pointsMy shoulders feeling fine these days Bob maybe I should just come get it?!?!
-
3 pointsYou will have to do a little disassembly Never mind, Kevin gave you an excellent answer while I was typing.
-
3 pointsWelcome, @waldamar! Nice Commando, you’ll enjoy it even if it’s not an 8 speed! The deck needs to be disassembled from the bottom, if I recall and if it’s like the previous model with the gear drive spindles. Make sure that when you put them back together, you clock the blades 90 degrees from each other, or you’ll know it when they hit! It’s probably a good time to replace the half moon keys too, I’ve sheared one and the noise is not so spectacular.

3 pointsThis belt sander was on Amazon for something like 40 bones and I figured it was worth a shot on these seams. I figured there would be more control than a flap disc on a grinder. I roughed in the welds with the flap disc and finished with this. Worth every penny!
-
3 points'Ow do, Waldamar! As said, a nice looking tractor and also check the Manuals section for the info you need. Enjoy!
-
3 pointsI told this factoid to my honey this morning and her immediate response was that if it isn't a good boat anchor... Perhaps you could use it as a buoy?
-
3 pointsYou can be realy proud of your Son. To take care on things that to help others is rarely in this times. It is truly a good feeling, sometimes more than just to be proud, if you see that your Kids going a better Way than you expecting. 👍
-
3 pointsThank you for sharing that story Jim! What a fine guy your son turned out to be. That is a big honor to have your likeness on one of the most recognizable city blocks in the world. Well Done—father and son!
-
3 pointsTruth be told, when my 10 year old grandson comes over to help dear old Papa with some chores, he uses my JD X-300.
-
3 pointsBeen taking my WH's work back from the old JD slow but sure. I use a WorkHorse GT '14'-48 'Twingle" lately, with the original 48" the tractor came with. Works great for the few properties I manage.
-
3 pointsI laid in my filler and anti-shrinkage rod, then welded my first seams this morning. I’ll end up hand belt sanding the piece to remove the excessive spatter and to dress the welds as smoothly as possible. Luckily after both welding passes, my angle checked out as un-moved!
