11 pointsI finally got my hands on a wheel horse. I'm hoping someone can tell me what I have so I can start locating some correct parts for it. The engine is a 6.25 hp Kohler which I know isn't correct. I would like to find some correct fenders, controls and a mower deck. Please let me know if you need any other pictures. Thanks in advance, Kyle

7 pointsI picked-up this little beauty over lunch. Needs a bath Rear "tipping-foot" is straight as an arrow and nothing re-welded: After a little scrub with some carwash soap and a soft brush (wheel woolies for the nooks and crannies): followed by a WD40 wipe-down: ^^^ easiest restoration ever! Sometime this summer, i'll try to bring out a little more of that gorgeous color and look into using Johnson's wax to preserve it. I'm wondering if you guys can help me nail down the exact year Thanks for stoppin' by!

7 pointsNow @wallfish, I've never seen @Sparky collection, but referring to Wheelhorse's and Junk in the same paragraph is surely criminal, at least on this site Sound like something one of our wives would say. Where are the moderators around here, time to clean this place up a little. PS The show's sound like good times

6 pointsTell Jada and Rylee here's the next update! Been working on the rear tire and hub assemblies. These small parts with holes take multiple attempts so it takes a while. Quite a few get broken near the end when I think I got it, then BAM. It's gone. Dropped a couple too and couldn't find them. So I'm not completely thrilled how the inner rim parts look but after so many tries doing other things and trying to add too much detail, it just wouldn't work. But here's the assembly pieces. Close up of the hub and inner rim Added a small tube at the frame for the steering tube. It appears square in the pic frm the shadows but it's a tiny round tube. Oh, and you can see the sediment filter on the tank. Looks rough that close up. Here it is mocked up. None of those hub pieces are glued yet. I need to get the seat on so the tires can be positioned correctly. And I'm having a little trouble getting a tight bend for the seat spring to look right.

6 pointsNot to be Debbie downer her tho put the fenders back on if he's gonna have on a drive it (and he should) . Wouldn't want to see his leg caught in them ags... just sayin...

6 pointsCome on out Sat. May 4th. Plenty of parking, with food, ice cream, and a huge vendor area. There's always a large turnout with bunch of tractors and displays. All makes and models welcome. Pull right in and park with your tractor display and sell / swap some stuff too or just show up to enjoy the show. Always a good time! It is not necessary to only bring trailer queens to display! You should see the junk @Sparky Mike brings! Best to bring a rider to cruise around on as there's a huge area to cover if you want to see it all and we go out cruise'n around quite a bit. 544 Amston Rd Colchester CT. 7am - to Sun May 5th. Camping is free with your display http://www.zagrayfarmmuseum.org/resources/spring-show-flyer-2019.pdf Here's a link to a list of New England area shows 2019 http://www.bellshome.com/shows.htm Looking forward to the Zagray spring show on May 4-5. We usually just go on Sat.

6 pointsMade a couple laps around the yard. Definitely need to wrap the exhaust and it doesn't want to hold 3rd gear. It'll pop out after a few seconds. Other than that, I'm tickled. Here are some more pics of hood spacers and steering linkage.
-
6 pointsWow! Thanks for all the quick responses and kind words. Yes it seems the hood was raised using some spacers and additional brackets. I'm assuming the steering coupler is there for the same reason, but I can't wrap my head around how it would line up with the hood in the original location without it. May be the lower shaft angle has been modified too. It has the rectangular cutout for the controls, but someone added a pull style choke and moved the throttle to the side of the hood. (There may not be enough room between the hood and the steering wheel) Over all I'm pretty happy with my find. It wouldn't run more than a few seconds at a time, but got that sorted out with a carb cleaning. Going to replace the leaky exhaust pipe today then put it back together and enjoy it while I look for parts.

6 pointsI’m digging that little tractor! It has an almost panzer look with those fenders and 6” front wheels. I’d find a set of suburban fenders and 8” front rims and leave that engine on. Got the makings of one nice wheel horse custom!

5 pointsAlong with the 3523 Jim mentioned the input gear/shaft might be suspect. Do this test before you open the transmission. Put the transmission in third. You'll feel the shifter balls slip into the detents on the rails. Then, with it in third gear see if there's any in/out play on the input pulley. There should be none. If there is, determine how much and make note of it. You'll need to get a 3/4" ID arbor shim of that thickness to slip on the input shaft as you reassemble things. That play represents the amount the 3523 gear can and will disengage from the input gear as you're running it.
-
5 pointsCuda and thanks for the pics. I'm afraid your transmission will have to come apart to fix that popping out of gear problem. You have a bad 3523 gear in there. It comes from trying to shift on the fly which is a no no. Fortunately ther are the parts and know how here to fix it. Here is the gear you will need. https://www.wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/transmissions.html#!/3523-3rd-gear/p/84932562/category=23548039 Yours will look like the one on the left, should look like the one on the right @stevasaurus Has how to videos on these transmission and are easy to open up. Not to mention many other experts here on them. Pic courtesy of Lowell

5 pointsHood was originally a 1960, but was converted from lever throttle control to push-pull like a 1961. Footrests and clutch pedal are 1960. I kind of like the fenders, but I'm into customizing. There are hundreds of Suburbans with the original fenders around, but your's are more distinctive. Someone did a lot of work to make everything work together. Jim

5 pointsWell I have been packing up a bunch of stuff and had some room in the shed. Got it to fit in there and set the engine in place. Going to have to do something different with the air cleaner for hood clearance but it fits. That extra 3” of gt14 frame is all used up. May have to trim about 1/2”-1” off the front angled panels the covers bolt too. Thats no big deal. Won’t even notice it. Still have to get the engine mounting plate figured out for belt alignment and then drill/bolt it into place. Then I can get the engine mounted solid. Steering will aslo get done. Baby steps.👣

4 pointsHey Guys, I picked up 314-8 today with a 42" RD deck. Less than 300 hours, good shape but needs a cleaning. I will be using this for mowing as it was time to return my dad's Kubota and my 877 was smoking me out. Can you offer any maintenance tips or references? Common problems to watch out for? I wasn't sure I would like the gear drive because I love my hydro, but so far I love it. Thanks!

4 pointsI built a "mild" street/strip 406 SBC for my '78 Malibu Comp full roller cam and billet timing set, Dart Iron Eagle Platinum heads and Eagle rotating assembly with forged I beam rods moving Mahle forged flat tops...
-
4 pointsIt would fit in about anything. 383 stroker. Just a SBC 350 bored .30 over. Full roller, Erson cam, flat top Keith Black Hyper Pistons, heads are made from aluminum stock at my uncles machine shop. Intake 2.29 Exhaust 2.16. Valves made in shop. Edelbrock dual plane intake. Edelbrock 1407 carb. Fabricated valve covers by me and modified HEI ignition. Dyno puts it at 750 HP. Still working on it though. So far we have 170 hours fab and build time and roughly $900 in materials

4 pointsHere are three pictures of celebration. They mean that once I use the square stainless to build an 8’x8’ deck, 4 Wheel Horse machines can fit on top of Norman’s bed rails! Having them on top means I’ll have space to cram whatever else I find that I “need” at the show!
-
4 pointsI have a 1960 400 burb in pieces, that just needs to be put back together in the back of the shop. Another back burner project, fenders, tool box, hood, all in nice shape, just need some paint. Two 4hp kohlers, and the trans ( Built By Jake). I would be interested in doing some swapping for the 6.25 hp engine. Your just 7 hr from me. not that big of a drive for me when it comes to WH stuff down here. Down the road if your interested PM me. Chris.

3 pointsI ran across this one a couple of days ago and got it for $100, trying to start a restoration on it but have no idea about what year or model it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated

3 pointsYou may not believe this but every bit if that soil was hand sifted and put there with a c120 and a 10 yard cart.Of course that was many years ago when I was much younger.

3 pointsEd, I got it wrong. When mama got done planting she took a picture. The spilled dirt on the right is due to the middle buster dragging dirt out of the garden area. The shed in the background was built with lumber from my mill.
-
3 pointsHa, the famous line "Ran good when parked" I bought an engine at the big show once just for the funny sign. It read "Ran at one time"
-
3 points314-8 with a 42 inch deck with lees than 300 hr , should get you thru at least another 30 years, with a little maintenance .

3 pointsWelcome to glad you found us. I like the personality that your little tractor has. Someone went to great lengths to make a custom tractor yet giving it an “original” feel. I would make any modifications that you feel necessary to have it serve your purpose, but keeping it mostly as it is wouldn’t be a bad call. It really works as is. ...Besides if you spend much time on here, you’ll be buying more of them anyway. You’ll be able to purchase an original in the near future! You are the only one that has one that looks exactly like that!

3 pointsSounds like it’s going to be a lot of work, might as well just not even deal with it. I’ll be gracious enough to come take it off your hands Thats a good looking little tractor, I’d love to find a round hood for the kids to ride around on. No matter what you do with it it’ll just be happy to be used. Welcome to Red Square!
-
3 pointsjohn, do not forget to fill the tank on your tractor.
-
3 pointsThat could be why they used the coupler on the steering shaft but I don't see why. The shaft is supported by the hoodstand and the hood goes up it must move back as well so the shaft remains in the hood hole. Definitely a 60 hood and the push/pull holes were drilled in the wrong spot. All the modifications done look to be thought out and well done. The brake pedal extension, the mods to the lift arm and the fenders were well done. In a way the fenders kinda grow on me They remind me of an old orchard tractor.
-
3 pointsLeave the seals and remove all of the messy grease. Those sealed bearings will last a long time without getting much dirt into them and you probably won't be the next guy replacing them. (Unless it works daily and you're 20 years old who plans to keep it forever) And even if you are the next guy, it's a clean easy and quick job without the mess of the grease all over.

2 pointsI'm kind of a fan of the older 350 so I would not replace that one with a new LS for anything. I've had mixed results with getting broken studs out of Chevy heads in the past. The only really good advice I can give you is to try to tighten it 1/16 of a turn before you try to loosen it. @WVHillbilly520H Or @pullstart Perhaps they could weigh in...
-
2 pointsNice Horse and to , @cudakid! Though it’s not mine, I’d suggest trimming the fenders a bit too... but that’s just me. Maybe just enjoy it as you said, that always works!
-
2 pointsVery nice, Interesting custom. They did a nice job not to cut the hood. Make it your own, but I will say someone did a nice job on it. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,I think your giving me some ideas for a pile of parts i have. I have a set of Economy Power King tractor fenders and they look like an oversize WH fender......then add a custom aluminum, deck plate slightly oversize tool box Then add some 15" rear tires to fill in the larger fenders........ (as if I don't have enough projects.) @cudakid I'd appreciate if you would share some pictures of that steering shaft modification and how they lifted the hood.
-
2 pointsI did too, and didn't get any pictures. A guy stop by stop the 312-8 and It wouldn't start back. Got the 120/180 out and hooked it up and finished . Found the problem when I checked the fuse the box came off one side had a short wire not connected to anything. Here is an old picture of the 120/180 -8 with the aerator attached. That aerator has 5 - 12" 75% solid fire blocks at 75 lbs. each
