8 pointsHello everyone, my name is Brian and I'm very glad to have found this forum. Restoring old tools and tractors is not a new hobby for me but wheel horses are very new to me. Years ago i restored a 69 AC b-112 and had so much fun I dont really know why I have not done more since then. Recently i spied an old lawn ranger for sale close by and my tinker flame was kindled. I have a few questions but i know this isnt the thread to ask them on but i look forward to chatting with everyone.

8 pointsSanta daughter brought me this. I've got the perfect spot for it once I get the remodel done. I'm thinking a little embellishment from Terry is in order.

4 pointsSince this is a recoil start engine I wanted to fill in some of the empty space where the battery used to sit on this Ranger so I cut the battery tray down a little and welded up some 1/8" flat to make a tool box out of it. It's not very big but I think the boys will like it. I'll put a small latch on it and maybe add a small handle if I run across something that fits the dimensions.... I've also taken my seat pan to have cushions made and the guy tells me it'll be mid February before I get it back.

3 pointsI bought this 312 from Wheel-it in 2014 he bought it for the engine and found out it wasn't what he wanted. I have been using it and working on it since. Or should I say modifying it? Put new tririb's on it in November with narrow wheels. Gave it a Christmas present of a new switch, new seat, and headlights. It's had a miss in the engine I could not get out. The new switch and cleaning up the wiring and it's gone. The new lights Cree LED's 24 watt flange mount, real pain to install. Had to take the light apart just to get it in the hood. I think the plastic insert will work. I don't have any as a lot of parts were missing when I got it. I nstalled the new seat from Agri Supply $42.99 plus shipping and tax. Got it delivered to the door for $57.73. It set too upright for me so I added 1/2" spacer under the hinge. I had it out today to drag a cedar limb to the brush pile. Made a trip back up to the drive to get the camera. Notice anything different about the 312-8.

3 pointsWelcome, @RetroMower! the A-100 is a vertical shaft engine, totally different than most garden tractors on this site. Though it’s quality roots are there, a horizontal shaft Horse would most likely out perform it in every aspect. good luck hunting, PA seems to be littered with all kinds of Wheel Horses!

3 pointsI have a nite owl system. The cameras are 1080p with nite vision. I have 4 cameras but the DVR is set up for 8. Picture quality is excellent and if you have high speed internet you can view your home over your phone or tablet from anywhere at no cost. My system cost around 350.00. It is hard wired and I installed it myself in just a couple of hours. It will record and store for a couple of months and then record over the oldest. I have a 1 teribite HDD but you can get a 2 ter. You can also back up to a flash drive or external hard drive. I was able to prosecute a couple of idiots with the footage from my system. It also gives you alerts on your phone when someone or thing enters your set zones. And I repeat, not paying for a service.

3 pointsI should have taken pictures of the mold before I knocked it down. It really was bad. This way I could have sent them to you guys and you could have shown them to your wives and told them it was in your shed! 😜
-
3 pointsAlmost forgot Don... thanks for the tip buddy. Just remembered how much my Mrs Rules also hates her some mold.
-
3 pointsYour collection will start with a lawn ranger, then you'll find another one, and then another, and then another....catch my drift? Lol Also, I'm only an hour away from you? Any chance you go to the Lebanon valley indoor show in February?
-
3 pointsto he . , the Big WHCC Show Is only about an hours drive West of you at the South Mountain Fairgrounds at Arndtsville, Pa., and is always the weekend after Fathers day. We'll all be there.

3 pointsSorry about the long post but here is the latest update on Scottie’s recovery!!!! Chapter 2 Day 1 Scottie arrived home on Sunday around 2 pm. He was greeted by his 3 puppies and his older brothers! Once we got Scottie situated and in his new bed he fell asleep since the trip home was exhausting. Scottie had his normal visitors later in the evening. Which helped him being more comfortable at home. Chapter 2 Day 2 Well Scottie was up again last night with pain in his hip and in his clavicle. He had a hard time going back to sleep but once his medication kicks in he is fine. He has a positive attitude despite what he is going through. We are closely monitoring his urine output and his BM’s. I have to consistently remind him to drink his water and to eat something as there are times he forgets. During the day his normal activity consists of sleeping in until nine, eating when he is hungry, taking his medication, watching movies, repositioning so his bottom don’t break down, playing games, and being apart of our family and seeing who is visiting him for the day. Scottie opened his presents and he was excited to have a Green Bay Packer Christmas. He got a blanket, sweat pants, socks, a banner, and an Aaron Rodgers jersey! Two games to play with when his friends come over, and more clothes from other people. Chapter 2 Day 3 Scottie woke up in pain (6/10) because his stomach hurt and he felt sick. Come to find out he had to pass gas and have a BM. Once he achieved that task, he slowly started to feel better. Scottie had a surprise visitor this morning who brought him his Christmas gift. Jacob (His best friend) came to spend the day with Scottie. Scottie and Jacob played 3-4 different games and watched movies on Christmas Day!

2 pointsWell im glad i asked about this. But my original intent with this was a good winter project to clean up, possibly repaint to possibly use mainly as a mower come spring time. Although its on the lower end of WH power and ruggedness, its almost definitely more reliable than any new, big box store equivalent priced at $1000 at least. I will take the advice to keep looking seriously. I just wanna get my hands dirty lol

2 pointsConsider this rambling for a minute...all of the Wheel Horse transmissions (and I am not talking Foote, Peerless or Eaton) were 4 pinion from 1958 to 1967. In 1967, they came out with the #5060 ie...the 10 pinion LS in 3 of their models. The 1st 8 pinion differential was the #5091 in 1974...some 8 years later. It was pretty much a complete drop of the 10 pinion (except in some autos) to the 8 pinion that year...and beyond. I'm just looking at this time line, and it tells me something. Give it some thought. Richard...you posted while I was working on this post. We have a bet !!! good luck Mate. Just to be clear...one of us will owe @Cetan08 $25. and one of us will owe the other one of us $25.

2 pointsThank you all for the warm welcome. As for the lawn ranger, its not mine yet but come Monday it shall be with pics and questions to follow. I do have some pre purchase questions but i suppose it would be best asking in the general talk section

2 pointsThanks guys. Appreciate it. Always got screwed for presents and parties. Everyone was partied out already and broke from xmas haha. I did buy myself a brand new 3 point hitch for my GT14 I just got so happy bday to me!

2 pointsNo tractor stuff or tools etc. Lots of biscuits, toffee, chocolate and an enamel mug with.... "This is what an AWESOME GRANDAD looks" like on it. Oh! Three pair of socks.

2 pointsAt .183" - that is roughly 3/16" steel. Yes, a bit on the light side to some, but if designed properly it should be more than sufficient to handle the stress. To make a repair that is as strong as the base metal parts, the joint should not be a 90* cut across the tubing, but rather a 35-45* cut to increase the joint strength. It is quite common to see factory welds that are not properly penetrated down into the root of the joint - many plants hire folks off the street that have little or no welding experience. A certified or at least experienced welder would never accept just covering over a joint like that - it should be beveled at the proper angle and welded hot enough with the correct technique to get full penetration down into the root of the joint or beyond. In my opinion, a joint like that should be a full-gap weld - not something most plants with novice welders are capable of performing. If you're hunting for someone to weld those parts back together - start hunting around for some of the tradesmen that may be off this time of year. Pipefitters and some Boilermakers might be off the cycle of rebuilding power plants and doing pipeline jobs - you can check with their local halls for some of the locals that might be around. All those guys are certified and excellent welders since they do pressure work and many have their own portable rigs. You'll see Pipefitters all over - custom-built trucks sporting a Miller or Lincoln welder on the back of a flatbed that looks like it's built to handle an Apocolypse. Be polite and ask if they want a cash side job doing some portable work - might get lucky. Otherwise, find an old hole in the wall looking shop that works on farm equipment - those guys have to know what they're doing to stay in business. You'd be welcome to drag it here if you want - I'd do it for the cost of supplies, but that's going to be a long trip. Sarge

2 points@ericj I have been looking for pictures of the different sizes on a short frame and this gentleman man used 26’s and it is what got me started on 26’s. But i’m definitely open to the 24’s, I believe the only difference is in height if i’m reading the tire charts correctly.
-
2 pointsYep. My truck was down at the time, so I drove my wife to work and that took 40 miles off the trip. Wheel horse prices seem to be about a hundred dollars higher ask than they were last year, so harder to find one like this for the same money. As a bonus, I found some of the best motorcycle roads in Ohio, some of which are said to be as good as the legendary stuff in Tennessee. Definitely going back

2 pointsAll pinion gears are arranged in a circle so they will contact the axle gear. Half are in contact with the left axle, half with the right side The outside diameter of the axle gears on the eight pinion and ten pinion are the same. The only factor that will change is the number of pinion teeth contacting the spring will be reduced from five per axle to four. This may reduce the limited slip effect slightly when the torque is measured, but it will be a huge improvement over an open differential. The outward pressure of the spring against the pinion gears will reduce the slippage regardless of the number of pinions, heck, might even work on a four pinion.

2 pointsNice tractor! I wonder who around here has a small blue pickup, buying up all the short frames?
-
2 pointsMade some great progress on the tractor this evening. I installed the Gates belt and....... It worked !!!!! Push in clutch. Belt stops dead. Awesome. I did have to fiddle around with the belt guard a bit more. Remember all 3 pulleys have been changed and the belt is wider than the original. I had spaced the guard out away from the frame so as to make space for the wider belt and pulleys. Some PO had bent up this belt guard pretty badly in the past. I had to do some more straightening at the back by the transmission pulley. Now we need a little snow... Testing time.

2 pointsI'm glad he is a Packers Fan. Now I won't feel bad about the Bears beating the Vikings this weekend. I was having issues about who to root, route for. Scottie, take care and let mother nature do her work. Prayers still.
