17 pointsI rebuilt this front hich. Hood hinges were worn so pivot was drilled to 1/2" and a new pin made up. Hood stop was worn and I don't really like how the factory put the cotter pins at the ends where the hood hinge hits them so I made up a new 2 piece design. Here are the plans for the pivot pin and hood stop. Oversize hood pivot pin.pdf Wheel Horse hood stop pin.pdf Cleat

6 pointsJust to give you an idea how twisted my honey and are: We installed 3 granite steps. Lower/base one is roughly 1750 lbs. Then 2 more, each a little smaller. ALL by hand. Poor quality pic because a lot of the work was done at night. This is the second step headed into place. It was an incredible amount of work. .... and fun !!! But I think I have to draw a line at this carb and wait for the next one. It's too worn in too many places.

6 pointsGood night in the shop tonight although rather abbreviated in between b-ball practice for Caleb and bedtime! Caleb started by removing the two remaining “clip nuts” on the tower rails for the lower dash panel and replacing with new ones. Obviously he installed the necessary four pieces. This thing evidently had some sort of a cab on it at one point. We removed the long bolts out of the tower where the “IC” is above the word “AUTOMATIC” and replaced with the correct length carriage bolts with nylocks on the backside. Once those couple of easy tasks were done, Caleb assembled his dash with the new ignition switch that we got to replace the old one and the voltmeter from Richie. It’s ready to install once the wiring is sorted out... Now for the big project of the night: first I want to thank Sarge for his encouragement to keep at this steering wheel. We worked on it for about 20 min with seemingly no results. I didn’t want to damage the steering wheel or anything else for that matter. We had been soaking it with SeaFoam Deep Creep for several days now. I tried beating on the end of the shaft with a big hammer on a solid brass rod. I tried prying up on the steering wheel with my knees while hitting the center shaft with the brass rod hammer combo—no dice. Caleb was pretty discouraged by this time but I told him that we would get it if we had patience and kept at it. Then I had this idea... I clamped a good Vice Grip to the shaft and placed a 2x4 between it and the tower, grabbed the steering wheel and gave it a turn and it moved We couldn’t believe it! Caleb was stoked and it was a great teaching moment for him. I’m not saying it would work in every application but it worked for us and I’m thankful to be over that hurdle. I need to order a fuel shut off and a grommet next and get back on the wiring. We are getting close to having this thing together...not restored YET but hopefully running and functioning much more like it should be...

5 pointsSearched for months but never could find a factory set of LR 18" turf rear tires. Had a set of ATV tires so I mounted them. Actually not a bad look. No worry about traction........still stock and will stay that way.....just need the WH badged 18" rear tires.

5 pointsEric, I grew up the "Amish" way ,we still had draft horses and an Allis Chalmers B, plowed snow by dragging a wooden "V" plow behind horses or the "B"... Used to have dig rocks out with digging irons and drag them around my back can't take much now a days... now I'm spoiled with the hydro/hydraulics and FEL, and yes WE would fix anything/everything we could, if your carb hadn't been so worn I would told you have at it ,it's only original once, Jeff.

4 pointsSpent more time this evening. Removed starter. Removed gear and cleaned & graphite lubed the shaft. Wire brushed Starter case, engine block. Reinstalled. Found this. .. behind starter case on block. ... part of a shim maybe??? Scraped engine head gasket surface with putty knife, then wire brush. Ran a tap through all ten bolt holes. Vacuumed a bit. Cleaned off piston top. ... it's marked STD.

4 pointsI too have had excellent experience with Red Square members, particularly @limited12 and @oldredrider. Couldn't ask for two nicer guys or better friends. It just seems odd when someone isn't very active and just wants to give something away. I've seen some classifieds where someone (not very active on here) had something for sale and then repeatedly ignored posted offers from someone wanting their item. Again not slamming anyone, just seems these offers sometimes come from folks who are not as active as us regulars.
-
4 pointsI have picked up many rollers at 0-$50 and a 60" deck in excellent condition for scrap price. Some of these deals were with members of Red Square, some from Craigslist, and many were referrals from local lawn/tractor sales and service individuals. They were nearly all good experiences w/o problems. BTW Jim, I did reply to this first post within 9 min.

4 pointsGood deal! Those steering wheels are one of the biggest pains...... and rear hubs. Glad you beat it at it’s own game. Looking good. 👍

4 pointsJust what I was hoping to find, thank you very much! I also want to say this is a great site y'all have here.

3 pointsReceived the sad news from overseas earlier today that Mom passed away earlier in the day. She was 83 and suffered from many ailments including Parkinson's. She had just come from the hospital a couple of days ago and her kidneys were failing. Spoke to her on the phone yesterday and she was in good spirits, better than usual. She passed away suddenly in my Father’s arms as he was helping her re position in bed. We have been scrambling the whole day to get a flight to go there and will be leaving tomorrow. Not a good thing for my wife who also suffers from Parkinson's , and stressful situations make it so much worse. Its neither easy nor ideal being so far apart from family, it’s a fragmented life too many times not knowing what to do. Parents over there, children and grandchildren over here. Such is the life of an immigrant who not only loves his family but also the country that he calls home.

3 pointsI don't think @Big_Red_Fredis trying to hard tonight. Maybe his is counting all things he has promised me. A with a FEL , A steak dinner and breakfast all at the Big Show , now if he will pay my motel bill I will have it made. I could use a full size pick up , a garage ( at least 5 bays ) and a winning lottery ticket. Is that too much to ask for ?

3 pointsYa know, you just can't get good 30+ year old stuff anymore... Beautiful work!

3 pointsThanks guys, I have done this to all 4 of my 520's now. Hopefully the 1/2" rod lasts longer than the 30 years it took to wear out the originals . Cleat

3 pointsI was able to get all four of the Phillips head screws out of the fan screen. I've sprayed them with kroil five or six times over the last 4 days. I knew I wasn't going to be able to get an impact driver till Friday or Saturday so... Three times in three days I did sort of a makeshift impact screwdriver by finding a large, Phillips screwdriver that has metal all the way through the handle and fit the heads very well and banging on it with a hammer. Followed by more oil. After repeating this process a few times over a few days, I put a slight twisting pressure on the screwdriver and kept hitting it with the hammer and they slowly started backing out. All four came out perfectly fine.

3 pointsGreat to hear, glad it gave up the fight - it's all about patience and leverage. Now, take some crocus cloth and clean up that shaft or at least file down any raised metal - it can be quite sharp and every time you're working on that wiring it's going to bite you back for scarring it up....lol. Nice that this one is a smooth shaft with only the roll pin - most I've dealt with were splined and not quite so easy. Sarge

3 pointsHaving just gone through a steering wheel experience, I can appreciate what a PITA it can be. Glad that you guys had success!! Things are looking good. Tell Caleb he's doing a great job.

2 pointsI have been plowing some serious snow this winter. I haven't had much issue with traction with filled 23x10.50's and wheel weights. Each wheel/weight weighs over 100 lbs. I can move a foot+ of snow without chains with no issue, though i do wish for the chains when i do lose traction. Engine and tractor perform just fine. That said, i don't think i care for the hydro system. I LOVE the hydro lift for plowing, but certainly prefer a clutch. Likely just personal preference since i have been mowing with a 8spd for about 18yrs. I thought i might get used to it, but getting onto my GT1100 just feels much more natural. To mix the best of both worlds (Kohler and 8spd), i picked up a 1991 312-8 last night from a neighbor. I will be selling the Hydro tractor and my GT1100, both with 42" side discharge decks, keeping my 42" plow and 37" bagger deck. The 48" bagger system was sold separately. Thanks all for your input.

2 pointsHave an extra drink at happy hour tonite, WC would be 138 years old today. I have a poster on my workshop door of him and a quote "I note the derogatory comments regarding my use of alcoholic stimulants and lavish life style...it is the penalty of greatness" My 30 something neighbor saw it and asked who WC Fields was My other fave "I never go out on New Years Eve...the bars and grills are filled with rank amateurs"

2 pointsThat sounds good Norm...I just couldn't let you go buying all kinds of stuff and still not fix the problem. Keep us informed please. Would still like to know what you find. If you post pictures of suspect parts, we can take a look and tell you what we think.
