11 pointsI had a thread going in the tractors section called 701 black horse. Well I got it in early september. All was original except the fenders and the stop bracket for the lift arm. Well thanks to a fellow member I got the fenders and had the rest of the parts needed. I still have to install the fender brace and the dash plate. But after going through the engine and replacing what was needed. That followed with a days worth of straighten sheet metal and several days of paint stripping. The look it obtained grew on me. So everything got wet sanded and clear coated. It got all new fluids and everything that was needed mechanicaly. So overall this tractor had been previously painted 6 times and 7 time in some spots. This tractor has become one of my favorites and i will be snowblowing with it this winter. But most importantly here's the pics! There's some before and after. I'll post some more when the snowblower is put on.

7 pointsStopped by dad's this morning and got a kick out of this... it almost begs a "caption this"... "Steel wheels anyone?" @Shynon we took care of that grommet last weekend... Two weeks from now and hopefully I'll have some pics with AG's mounted reminds me of Johnny Cash--"one piece at a time."

7 pointsOn items like a coil or condenser that don't carry high amperage you can use star washers to ensure a good ground. It will penetrate the paint.
-
6 pointsMy first attempt to airbrush flames on the hood for my modified Electro 12, which I named "Thor". Asking for input or thoughts? The tractor in the background is my 1974 B-80 that I use for mowing. I was in the process of installing a new interstate battery and mule drive.

4 pointsTry this : COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — The Helsinki airport says Flight 666 has arrived safety in HEL — the airport code for the Finnish capital — for the last time. The Finnair flight took off from Copenhagen, Denmark, in the 13th hour of Friday the 13th, headed for Helsinki Vantaa airport. Finavia, which operates Finland’s 21 airports, says the flight landed eight minutes ahead of schedule at 3:47 p.m. local. The flight started 11 years ago and has fallen on Friday the 13th 21 times with no reported ill effects. Still, Finnair has decided to retire the flight number. As the carrier is switching around some flight numbers later this month, Flight AY666 will become AY954.

4 pointsJim--I'd better make sure that dad didnt get a job for Canadian National while I was sleeping... @ebinmaine now I have a bunch of Cash songs in my brain while thinking of dad driving Clyde on the rails... "I hear that train a comin', it's rollin' round the bend, and I ain't seen the sunshine since I don't know when..."

3 pointsPut a set of terra-grips on my 516H1100 today - sure rides smoother than the 4 link chains - should be easier on my blacktop drive this winter too..been cutting a lot of overgrown hedges and bushes - throw the stuff ( 8 foot tall or more ) into a pile-alternating tops to bottoms to make a long thick pile 8 to 10 feet long by about 3-4 feet in diameter.( like a windrow )...push it with the blade down about 100 yards to my composting area..it rolls and tangles and after a few feet just slides along on the grass - never even have to leave the seat... just handle it once....good for my old bones..

3 pointsWow! This KT17 Series 2 must have been a desirable habitat. Hopefully, for just gas money, made it worth the trip.

3 pointsUpdate John, @shallowwatersailor, I got the boat moved to winter storage this morning and got your horses unloaded inside. I put a battery in the 312 and it turned over. I didn't try to start it as I was more interested in the 417. The 417 appeared to be locked up, so I took off the flywheel cover and I was able to turn it using the flywheel. It seems free now. I put 12v direct to the starter and it seemed to be locked, so I took off the tins and starter to find a rodent condo. I got the starter off and cleaned things up a bit and actually got the starter to run, but it has bearing issues. I will soak the thru bolts several days , then try to open it up. I don't know if this horse will ever run again, but he must feel better to get this crap out of his gut. To be continued.

3 pointsStandard pipe plug will be the easiest to remove. Square head is OK. Hex head is best. However, If you use the rear attachamatic for a front or mid blade for example, it will hit the plug if it is not flush like the original.
-
3 pointsNot only are these good quality - and a dang good price - by using the sealed type you can use them and not be concerned with that awful method of pumping a ton of grease in the huge cavity hoping a little bit of grease will find its way to the bearing. Being sealed should make them last a good long time...

3 pointsPersonally I like sunrise red I painted my C-161 8 speed with it and Cecil liked it at the last show he attended. I feel like we are beating a dead horse with the paint topic but I got it directly from the man himself "there is no official WheelHorse red" Cecil told me that back then paint mixing wasn't the science it is today so there is variations in the color. So as most of us agree, if you paint it red and you like it then that is your Wheel Horse red!

2 pointsMy buddy and fellow RS member, Ed Kennell, just left with my last two Classic-style Wheel Horses. So long to my 1986 312A and matching 1986 417A. Ed and I used the hand winch installed on his trailer plus the HF crane on my 518xi to easily load the tractors. Both are must-have accessories in my book! In preparation for our move next year, I am continuing to downsize the herd to a workable number.. So in the Wheel Horse column I now have left three Black Hoods and three 5xi tractors. That still leaves seven Bee Hinds as well. Next weekend we begin the search for a new property further South in the State for Lovers.

2 pointsHey all, i recently picked up a Raider 8 and and Charger 12 to add to my small but growing collection. Both need restored including paint and I have never had much painting experience when it comes to auto paint. Can someone give me some helpful tips on prep , like if i need to strip it to bare metal or not and what colors to use? As well as how to mix the paint with hardener and clear coat. Thank you in advance!

2 pointsYou are a regular Mikey Poppins. Practically perfect in every way. Watch out for that change in the wind.

2 pointsInteresting about the nuts up or down. Go with the manual, I probably missed it and just assumed the nuts up all the time. It may not make any difference...not sure. Jim, you will have to see when you get that trans from Terry. If you can't turn it, take it apart and do like the manual. I doubt Terry ever put any oil in it.

2 pointsThe 'A' designation was for special oil pan. If you look at a model list you'll see that the 78-84 models used an 'AS' engine. After that they got rid of the wobble mount and went back to a 'S' Engine.
-
2 pointsLower and smaller than a regular one, to fit inside the cradle and not add too much height, plus it had an additional well in the bottom that went between the rails of the cradle mount to accommodate the correct amount of oil.
-
2 pointsYou should not have to. I know a few others that had similar problems and it was the switch that was always the issue. Just to be sure you can test the wire and see if you have the correct voltage. but as 952 pointed out, make sure the wire is not loose before you test.

2 pointsThis is what I got out of the manual Bob, page 32... can't seem to find that note 18?? Thanks for the offer on the spring and I may take you up on it if I can't find one local. Sorry for the fuzzy pic! I did check the bolt end/nut clearance to the mushroom gear and there is some but not much. Not sure how much end play there is for the diff when its all bolted up? NO... got it fixed to a magnet parts tray along with the balls ...looking for those on the floor is an hour of my life lost I'll never get back! From Dino's tutorial, nuts up and to the left.

2 pointsI keep a supply of washers on hand also. http://qbcbearings.com/BuyRFQ/ThrustB_Washer_SL_SB_I.php

2 pointsAnother for the bearings Richard posted. I've used them quite a while on my non-workers. Nice and clean without grease squeezing out. I was hesitant to use them in my hard workers because I tend to be old school and like to keep things greased up. I now have them in those as well.

2 pointsI've had a couple Horses that I couldn't get that damn allen plug out.The inside hex rounds out real easy.I've had to drill them out. When I replace them,I use a standard 1/4 inch pipe plug.Has an external square head. Also use Teflon tape on the threads. The tape not only seals the threads,it makes the plug easier to remove next time.Good luck with yours.

2 pointsDon't know your model number but did find a 108757 switch listed for a recoil start model. No longer available from Toro. A 111320 switch may work but don't know anything about it other than still available from Toro. An alternative switch may be the very common 103991 5-terminal switch which makes it inexpensive. Use just 2 of the terminals. Click on the picture. Garry

2 pointsFirst of all, a K241AS will not directly fit your C-100. The original engine was a K241S. A K301S, K321S or K341S will directly fit as they all have the same foot print, output shaft, PTO connections etc. As far as other engines, there will have to be some modifications. Other members have used Predator engines from Harbor Freight with reasonable success.

2 pointsI just bought four of the type Richard (953Nut) posted and I think they are heavy duty!
-
2 pointsHope the gear works out for you. And Thanks for the You need to pay attention to the diff bolts I believe if the nuts are facing the large end of the mushroom gear they will rub. So I guess that would be nuts facing the input shaft.

-
2 pointsJust curious Eric, How many tractors are required to qualify as an arsenal? You don't have to count em, just a ball park figure....20, 30, 40, 50......

1 pointGet there as soon as possible. Let the owner know you are on the way. Don't stop for lunch....you can eat on the way home.
